Our long story short Outdoor equipment for pioneers throughout a century of adventures. Bergans of Norway has been driven by dedicated and passionate outdoor enthusiasts for over a century. We introduced and patented the backpack as we know it today, an invention famous polar explorers such as Amundsen and Scott recognized and used on their expeditions. No other manufacturer of outdoor equipment can match our experience in polar exploration – or our ambition to share this legacy with today’s adventurers. Founded in 1908, Bergans has played a major role in Norwegian outdoor life for more than a century.

Today, Bergans of Norway is a leading innovator in high-performance outdoor equipment and technical garments. In close cooperation with our test team of professional polar explorers and adventurers, we develop high-quality equipment. Our unique heritage, history and expert insights into the demands of the rugged Norwegian back country go into every single product we create. This knowledge has made a number of our products test- and award-winners, both nationally and internationally.

Product development When our founder, Ole F. Bergan, invented the famous Bergans backpack frame in 1908 it was an innovative stroke of genius stemming from his own experience as an active hunter and outdoorsman. To this day Bergans has continued to recruit outdoor enthusiasts and hunters, and the bedrock of our product development is still our passion for outdoor life and practical user understanding. In simple terms, we could say that our product philosophy is based on creating products that we ourselves would want to use on trips outdoors. We love thinking innovatively and identifying new and smarter solutions. This means that we must constantly monitor new developments. Thus, we travel all over the world to keep ourselves up to date and informed about the latest developments within fabrics, technologies and trends. We impose strict requirements to ensure that the fabrics we use are produced in a responsible and sustainable manner. No fabric will form part of a Bergans product until it has satisfied our strict quality requirements. At our highly advanced test laboratory, all fabrics are subject to extensive testing. We also perform tests at independent external laboratories.

It takes more than just quality modern fabrics to make good products. Bergans is renowned for its fine cut and high quality. In order to meet these expectations we must physically put the products into use. We do this ourselves, although we also have a wide range of product testers and collaborating partners for field testing, including members of Team Bergans. These are fastidious and extreme users who know what they want and what is required of a product. The product testers take the products on trips and provide us with valuable feedback regarding what works and what should be modified. We make the necessary adjustments and re-test the product until all the details are in place and the product can be adorned with the Bergans logo â&#x20AC;&#x201C; just the way we want it to be!

Our membranes Our mission is to keep you dry, warm and comfortable when you’re exploring the outdoors. As experienced outdoor enthusiasts we know that good weather protection is the key to an enjoyable experience. A shell garment’s most important weapon in the fight against wind and weather is the membrane fitted on the inside of the outer shell. This makes the garment waterproof, windproof and breathable. Modern shell clothing is mainly available with two types of membrane: hydrophilic and microporous. We use the following membranes: Dermizax®NX, Dermizax®, Bergans Element Active® and Bergans Element®. All of these are hydrophilic! We believe that because hydrophilic membranes have a dense and even surface, our shell garments have a number of advantages – both practical and functional: Easy maintenance A Bergans shell garment with hydrophilic membrane does not require special washing or special detergents.

Superior function for many years Our hydrophilic membranes are less affected by dirt and grime and salt crystals. They therefore retain full functionality over a long period – even when the garment is dirty! With regular washing and maintenance your garment will maintain its outstanding properties and performance for many years. Adapts to your activity level A shell garment with hydrophilic membrane will adapt itself to your activity level. High-intensity activity triggers enhanced breathability and ventilation. Low-intensity activity causes the garment to breathe less, as a result of which it retains heat better. Soft and comfortable Hydrophilic membranes are very flexible and elastic, which means that they do not interfere with the properties of the outer fabric. In combination with a snug fit, our shell garments are soft and gives you full freedom of movement.

Inspired by the past – developed for modern mountaineering Our Slingsby collection was developed for high level hiking and mountaineering, in cooperation with professional mountain guides. The result is super lightweight products streamlined to provide you with the functional essentials you need. No deadweight or clutter for the ultimate in rugged and everyday mountain wear. At Bergans we set our sights to the future, yet we never forget those who pioneered the sport of mountaineering. One such pioneer was William C. Slingsby who achieved many first ascents in Norway from 1872 to 1921, and is regarded as “The Father of Norwegian Mountaineering.” As a lover of nature, explorer, skier, and competent mountaineer he pushed the limits of the day, and inspired those around him. Qualities we at Bergans value and identify with.

Just like Slingsby modern mountaineers rely on the best equipment to reach the top. Inspired by his legacy, we drew on our extensive mountain experience to create a product range in the spirit of Slingsby. The range consists of shell garments, heat insulating padded garments, softshell, midlayers and backpacks, all optimized for high-intensity activity in demanding weather conditions. Each model is named after a summit ascended by Slingsby.

Lightweight equipment is essential in steep terrain. To strike the perfect balance between weight and functionality and to achieve the durability required for tough mountain use, we tested, weighed and rethought every little detail in the Slingsby range. Functions and features that might hamper your progress were removed or placed elsewhere on the product.

Most of the shell garments in the Slingsby series are made from Dermizax® NX membrane to provide windproofing, waterproofing and outstanding breathability. How the experts dress Very soon, Tormod Granheim will climb the last of a total of 82 alpine summits above 4,000 meters. What kind of clothing has he taken with him on these trips? “I’m a great fan of the Slingsby collection, with the Storen jacket and pants as my favorites. These are high-tech products and also super light. They suit me perfectly. As someone who finds it difficult to keep warm, I appreciate a little extra warmth – even in the summer. The Uranostind jacket with PrimaLoft® does the job perfectly. If it’s really cold I’ll choose down. I love the Memurutind Down Jacket! Underneath I will usually wear wool. The thickness depends on the pace I plan to maintain throughout the day. I love outer layers with high collars and zips. The mid-layer will usually be a Kvanndalstind Half Zip. I’ll often have a Helium 55 L on my back. It serves as hand baggage on planes and holds a lot of climbing equipment, large, warm down items, as well as water and candy. For skiing I use a more technical backpack, like Istinden or Hodlekve.

Hiking safety When you’re spending time in steep and exposed terrain it’s important to have the right equipment and clothing. Thorough knowledge of the terrain your are moving in is also crucial. Bergans collaborates with Norgesguidene (Norway’s Guides), who are specialists in tour guiding, courses and mountaineering training. They use our products on a daily basis and provide us with very valuable feedback. They also provide us with knowledge and tips about hiking. Here’s a tip for you: Consult Norgesguidene (Norway’s Guides) next time you’re intending to hike in unfamiliar terrain. norgesguidene.no

TECHNICAL WOOL The combination of wool with state-of-the-art textiles produces a more functional and durable fabric, while retaining the unique properties of wool: • Regulates temperature – provides great insulation in the cold, but has a cooling effect when it’s warm • Soft and comfortable • Good wicking properties • Does not absorb perspiration odors – garments made from wool-rich blends can be worn for longer without needing to be washed. • Sun protection = minimum UPF 30 • Machine-washable It is worth noting that the volume of wool in the garment affects its properties. The more wool in the garment, the more noticeable the properties. We use recycled wool in several of our products.

DNT + Bergans The cooperation’s goal is to contribute to giving people as many good outdoor experiences as possible. When you walk, your hips and shoulders go up and down during every step you make. Your shoulders go in the opposite direction of your hips, which makes your back bend alternately to the right and left in line with the steps you take. The helical frame allows the carrying system to bend both ways and shape itself to the body’s natural movements.

TWISTING

In addition to the upward and downward movement of hips and shoulders, they also go forwards and backwards when you walk. Shoulders and hips move in opposite directions, which leads to a twisting of your torso. While a traditional backpack will prevent this natural movement, the helical-shaped spring frame twists along with your body.

SLEEPING BAGS A good nightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sleep is vital, in particular when you are on a trip. Body and mind both need rest in order to function at their best the next day. This is a matter of comfort, but getting damp and cold may also be a direct cause of health problems. The right sleeping bag is perhaps the most important item in your luggage.

SYNTHETIC FIBER

Down is a superior insulator per weight and is therefore used for light bags. Down is also softer and more comfortable to lie in. Down is often preferred because it fills the available volume easily, i.e., it reduces the volume of circulating air inside.

Synthetic fiber is heavier but cheaper than down. How much cheaper depends on weight, expansion property, softness, and compressibility.

Choose the right sleeping bag

WINTER

This is a sleeping bag intended for outdoor use during the winter. All winter bags have a heat retention collar that prevents cold air from getting into the bag. The warmest option we have is a combination of Senja Ice and Senja Snow which provides a comfortable temperature even at -36°C. This is a sleeping bag which is more suited to expeditions.

3 SEASONS

These are more all-round sleeping bags. If you open up the zip for ventilation, it can be used in the summer. It will also keep you warm in the spring and autumn provided the temperature doesn’t drop too far below zero. If you freeze easily, it might be a better option to buy a 3-season sleeping bag rather than a summer sleeping bag. 3-season sleeping bags are also fitted with a heat retention collar.

2. Heat retention collar with elastic as standard on all winter and 3-season bags. The elastic is placed behind the insulation material so as to create as little nuisance as possible. Helps keep the heat inside the bag. 3. Inside pocket in all sleeping bags for safe storage of passport, money, and travel documents (not children’s bag).

SPRING / SUMMER

Summer sleeping bags are suitable for use only at temperatures above zero. They are excellent for camping, backpacking trips, and sleeping indoors. They are lightweight, have a small pack volume, and are easy to pack into your backpack. Like all other sleeping bags for adults, summer sleeping bags have interior pockets with space for tickets, passports, etc.

Ally Canoe When you paddle, you experience the environment in new ways. You glide calmly and effortlessly across the landscape. Forest animals don’t shy away from you the way they normally do. Paddling can therefore be perceived as the ideal form of peace of mind.

Some paddlers also seek the thrill of tackling waterfalls and rapids. It is then that you can really feel the enormous forces of the water on your body. You must then rely on your own skills and that the boat holds. It’s hard to prevent the canoe from receiving rough treatment and from hitting a stone hard here and there.

The Ally canoe has a flexible structure that absorbs impacts and shocks. It can’t sink. The strong PVC skin is both sewn and welded and has an extra reinforced bottom. An Ally canoe can be simply stowed in a pack bag and carried on your back. You can even take it on the plane as ordinary baggage.

SELECTING YOUR ALLY CANOE

In order to find a good canoe, it is important that the choice is based on the individual user’s needs and skills. Before you purchase a canoe, you ought to assess where and under which conditions it will be used.

ALLY CANOES ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO CATEGORIES: ALLROUND

All-round canoes have a slightly curved keel line and a tall, curved bow and stern. They offer great stability and loading capacity, and are ideal for trips and expeditions. They are easy to manoeuvre in rivers and rapids, but are just as good for flatwater paddling. Available in green.

FLATWATER

Flatwater canoes are designed for speed and directional stability. They have a straight keel and the bow and stern are straight, pointed and low. They cut through the water without any noticeable deviation caused by crosswinds. These canoes are significantly narrower than the all-round canoes. Beginners will need some time to adjust, but if the canoe is primarily used on flat, calm water, even beginners will get much enjoyment from a flatwater canoe. Available in green and red.

This is the “classical” ALLY canoe, easy to maneuver and with high stability. The keel-line is slightly arched which makes the canoe easy to maneuver under all conditions, especially when paddling white water with technical difficulties.

This canoe should be the first choice for families who like to paddle on trips in all conditions. It is easily paddled, steady and has surprisingly good directional stability, which in the first instance is due to a long, straight keel line. The stems are drawn a little longer down and are narrower than on the other all round models, which means that the canoe cuts through waves and glides exceptionally well on the water.

This big canoe has the same shape as 15´ DR and 16.5´ DR. With a length of 18 feet, this canoe has a wide and long, flat bottom and tumblehome shape. This makes it exceptionally stable, highly buoyant at the bow and it features a very high load capacity.

The canoe is made for 1-2 persons with gear, at the utmost 3 persons without gear. Large volume and high carrying capacity makes it suitable also as a family canoe. ALLY 15’ DR is splendid for fishing and its low weight makes it perfect on trips with portage. A typical all-round canoe for those who paddle under changing conditions on flat water and in rivers.

MEMBRANE TECHNOLOGY A shell garment’s most important weapon in the fi ght against wind and weather is the membrane fi tt ed on the inside of the outer shell. Bergans Element® membrane withstands a water column of at least 5,000 mm and has wicking abilities at least 5,000 g/m2/24.Any seam in a garment poses a risk of leakage. In garments with Bergans Element® membrane seams are completely or partially sealed with tape. The degree of taping is determined by what kind of use the product is developed for.

ELEMENT ACTIVE®

Bergans Element Active®-membrane are designed for moderate- to high-intensity activity in extreme weather conditions. Bergans rates 5,000 mm as the lower limit for a garment to be termed waterproof. Garments featuring a Bergans Element Active® membrane withstand a water column of at least 10,000 mm and has wicking abilities at least 10,000 g/m2/24. Any seam in a garment poses a risk of leakage. For this reason, all seams in garments featuring Bergans Element Active® are sealed by tape. This guarantees full waterproofing of the product.

Waterproof shell clothing is often divided into three different groups according to quality: 3-LAYER: Consists of three layers that have been laminated together to make one fabric. The outer layer is made from water-repellent microfiber. The membrane in the middle ensures that the garment is waterproof and wicking. The inner layer, closest to the body, consists of mesh lining that protects the membrane and provides extra durability.

2 ½-LAYER: Garments made from this material are principally characterized by being very lightweight and offering minimal packing volume, as well as being windproof and waterproof. The mesh lining is replaced by surface treatment on the inside of the membrane. The superior durability of our other 3-layer fabrics is not achieved, but superlight shell clothing is not intended for daily use.

2-LAYER: Consists of two layers that have been laminated together to make one fabric – an outer fabric in microfibre and the membrane. It also has loose mesh lining next to the body. This lining wicks moisture away from the body, protecting the membrane and retaining body heat. Since garments made from 2-layer fabric have a loose lining, they often feel warmer than 3-layer fabric.

What they all have in common is that the membrane is laminated onto the outer fabric.

MATERIAL DESCRIPTIONS FIELDSENSOR™

Fieldsensor™ is a unique «several layer» netting lining. The inside of the lining quickly absorbs moisture which is transported to the outside of the lining. From there the moisture is spread over a large evaporation surface. The lining dries quicker and feels drier and more pleasant than ordinary lining qualities.

RECCO®

RECCO® is a maintenance-free reflector which helps search and rescue crews during searches for people who have been caught in an avalanche. At Bergans we have chosen to sew in a RECCO® search reflector in some of our products. This neither guarantees that you will be found, nor that you will not be caught in an avalanche. But where a RECCO® searcher is in place, the reflector on the garments can be of good help for search and rescue crews. The RECCO® reflector is maintenance-free and does not require activation. It functions as a transporter of radio waves, cannot activate alarm systems, and will not be destroyed by de-magnetization.

PORELLE®

Porelle® membranes are highly durable, waterproof and breathable. The breathability ensures that moisture can escape and does not remain trapped in the glove.

The innate strength of Tactel® fibers enables us to produce garments that are three times as strong (resilient) as garments made from natural fibers. According to bending rigidity tests, Tactel® fibers are at least twice as soft as most other fibers. Clothes made from Tactel ® fibers are at least 20% lighter than most other garments that offer the same level of protection. One of the most important qualities with regards to comfort is that the garment breathes. Clothes made from Tactel® fibers meet this requirement. Tactel® fibers dry eight times quicker than cotton.

EPIC®

EPIC™ is a windproof and highly water-repellent cotton material with great breathability. The cotton fibres are encapsulated in a silicone barrier that reduces the material’s absorptive properties. This increased durability and breathability, reduces heat loss and drying time, and helps the fabric repel dirt more easily. EPIC™ is a protective material for use in any weather. The silicone used in this process is derived from sand and breaks down to sand – there are no waste products from the encapsulation process.

These garments are made with organic cotton. Organically grown cotton is a much more environmentally friendly way to grow cotton, both for the environment and for the cotton zfarmers. No fertilizers, gene modified organisms.
