The death certificate is needed in order to register the death; Bereavement Services will be able to advise you how to do this. However, if the death has been referred to the Coroner there will be a delay in the certificate being issued. The relevant staff will keep you updated about this. Once the death certificate is completed you will be called by the Medical Examiners Team to explain what is written on the certificate and that it will be sent directly to the Registrar. Further information about the duties of the Coroner are included on page 8 of this booklet.

Registering the death There are two main Registry Offices located in Workop and Retford. Please call 0300 500 8080 to make an appointment and confirm address details due to temporary re-locations. Once the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death has been completed the Bereavement Officer will send the MCCD electronically to the Registrar and deliver the original by hand. All deaths must be registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages within five working days. The Registrar will contact you by telephone to register the death over the phone there is no charge to register a death unless a certified copy of the death certificate is purchased. You may need several copies. 3
