Memory donations celebrating lives

A special way to remember

When you lose someone close to you, paying tribute to their life can be an important aspect of your grieving. Making a collection like this gives friends and family an opportunity to pay tribute, while making a practical, positive contribution towards a good cause. The charities included in this booklet would be honoured to receive a gift in memory of your loved one, should you choose to make one, and would use that gift in celebration of their life to help causes that need it.

Donations in lieu of flowers

Many families now request that mourners make a donation to a chosen charity rather than leaving funeral flowers.

It doesn’t mean that there won’t be any flowers at the funeral, just that floral tributes will be limited to immediate family, while others are invited to make a donation to a nominated charity.

In memoriam giving

When a cause has really touched someone’s life, relatives or friends often wish to commemorate them in a special way.

Giving donations can create a special memory and a lasting tribute, celebrating the life of those special to us. One way of doing this is to request that a donation be made to a charity of their choice, in place of flowers at a funeral. Most undertakers will organise this as part of their service, but donations can also be made through the relatives. Often, where details have been given, your chosen charity will write to thank individual donors for their kind and generous act, and will contact yourself to let them know the names of those who have paid tribute in this manner.

On the following pages is some information on a range of charities that would really appreciate your support. Whether you need to speak with them directly, set up a tribute page or order giving envelopes each one will be happy to help.

Around 180,000 people living with sight loss rarely leave home alone. Guide Dogs is here to support those people, helping them to move around safely and confidently, to get out of their homes and be able to live life the way they chose.

Since 1931 we’ve created thousands of partnerships; making a lifetime promise to provide every one of our guide dog owners with a dog for as long as they need one. That’s a lot of mouths to feed, paws to train and promises to keep.

Two out of every three amazing guide dogs are only made possible by gifts in Wills; gifts which help to provide the guide dogs of the future. Guide Dogs is helping more people than ever before, and in the UK today, almost two million people are living with sight loss. But by 2050 there could be nearly four million. This means more and more people will need our help.

Without gifts in Wills or donations in memory we couldn’t be there for these people in future, train all of our incredible guide dogs, or provide the services that give children and young people the skills they need to live independently.

Giving in memory of a loved one

When we lose a loved one we often look for a way to bring something positive out of a sad time. To celebrate a life lived well, and to keep precious memories alive.

Giving in memory is a wonderful way to do just that. Perhaps you’ve lost a special person who had a lifelong affection for animals. Or a beloved pet who made you glad for the companionship that animals give us. In either case giving a gift to the RSPCA is, for many people, an uplifting and appropriate way to celebrate a life, while helping animals live lives free from cruelty and harm.

We all feel differently when we lose a loved person or pet, so there are a number of ways you can remember a loved one through giving to us. They all make a difference to animals – and they can all help to bring comfort during a difficult time.

If you have questions about any of the ways to give in memory of a loved one, we’re here to help.

Imagine being able to stand up to animal cruelty not just now, but always. You could help us rescue, rehabilitate and find loving homes for animals in need with a gift in memory of your loved one to the RSPCA . It’s your chance to keep your love for animals alive, even after you’re gone.

We’ve been protecting and caring for animals since 1824. And with your help, we always will.

Epilepsy Research UK was formed by the merger of the Epilepsy Research Foundation and the Fund for Epilepsy. It is the only national charity exclusively dedicated to research into epilepsy.

Some 600,000 people in the UK have a diagnosis of epilepsy. Epilepsy can take many forms from a momentary black spell to a dramatic major convulsion. Even with control of seizures, the quality of life for people with epilepsy can be unpredictable and restricted. The risk of death for those with epilepsy is almost three times higher than in the general populationabout 1000 people die each year as a result of an epileptic seizure - and every week we learn of tragic cases of young people who have died as a result of epilepsy, often suddenly and unexpectedly.

However, new research offers the very real possibility of developing therapies that could prevent these deaths and transform the lives of those affected. Developments in drug therapy and medical scanning, along with major breakthroughs in the study of the human genome, mean that great progress has been made in understanding the causes of epilepsy in recent years. Even greater advances will be made in the coming years and our research will be at the forefront of developments to control, and perhaps even cure, epilepsy.

By making a donation, establishing a memorial fund in the name of a loved one or remembering Epilepsy Research UK in your Will, you could make a real difference to the lives of thousands of people.

Age UK is here to help with the challenges we face in later life. We provide vital support, companionship and advice to older people across the UK. Our network includes the three national charities Age Cymru, Age NI, Age Scotland and more than 150 local Age UK charities.

A donation to Age UK is the promise that, years from now, people in later life will have someone to turn to if they’re feeling vulnerable, lonely and forgotten. It’s the reassurance that, when the time comes, we will be there to help with everyday needs, so people can continue to live with dignity and respect.

Together, we can help everyone make the most of later life.

By making a donation to Help for Heroes you can provide practical support and a second chance at life for those who’ve suffered life-changing injury or illness while serving our country. No matter when or where they served we will be here for them and their family as long as they need us. Will you?

You might never imagine losing a special place that ’s always been there for you, but the future of our coa stline, countr yside and historic homes is f ar from certain.

By making a donation to the National Trust, you can help make sure these unique places live on to inspire the next gener ation.
