e a tan What does it mean to ?
The Berea City School District is committed to ensuring that every student develops the six key competencies outlined in the Portrait of a Titan: adaptability, communication, critical thinking, empathy, innovation, and leadership. These attributes are intentionally nurtured throughout a student’s journey, preparing them not just academically, but for the challenges and opportunities of life beyond the classroom.
While academic achievement remains a priority, the district’s Quality Profile highlights the district’s commitment to a well-rounded and inclusive approach to education, one that caters to the unique strengths and needs of every learner. From early childhood programs that build a strong foundation to advanced courses that inspire and challenge, the district fosters an environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.
The strength of the Titans community is built on the collaboration between students, parents, guardians, and staff. This partnership is vital in creating a supportive and nurturing atmosphere that promotes growth and development. The district values the contributions of its Titans community, knowing that together, they shape the future of every Titan.
As students graduate, they carry with them not only knowledge but the essential qualities of what it means to “Be a Titan.” These qualities—adaptability, communication, critical thinking, empathy, innovation, and leadership—are more than just skills, they are the foundation for navigating life’s challenges and making meaningful contributions to society. Being a Titan means stepping forward with resilience and confidence, leading with empathy, thinking critically in the face of complexity, and embracing innovation in a rapidly changing world.
A Titan doesn’t stop growing after graduation. The values instilled by the Berea City School District serve as a lifelong compass, guiding graduates as they adapt to new environments, build relationships, and take on leadership roles in their communities and careers. To “Be a Titan” is to continue learning, growing, and making a positive impact, long after leaving the classroom. The journey of a Titan is defined by a commitment to these principles, shaping not only their future but also the world around them.
Our new strategic plan, Destination 2027, was developed to ensure all Titans have access to learning experiences that prepare them for their future. To meet this goal, we need to provide dynamic and innovative lessons that prepare students for success in life, school cultures that celebrate the diversity of our students and communities, conditions where staff members feel supported and appreciated, systems and functions aligned to support student achievement, and a school community informed about our progress and successes.
PRIORITY 1: STUDENT SUCCESS
Every Titan graduates with a meaningful experience that strengthens and develops their passions and prepares them to become contributing citizens prepared for employment, enrollment, enlistment, or entrepreneurship.
PRIORITY 2: FINANCE & FACILITIES
BCSD is committed to a sustainable and transparent financial plan that will align our resources and facilities to our district goals and provide a framework for Student Success.
PRIORITY 3: FAMILY & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
BCSD will create a culture of collaboration and effective communication in order to engage a network of family and community stakeholders as partners in Student Success.
PRIORITY 4: THE TOTAL TITAN
BCSD is committed to developing the unique needs of every Titan, which is foundational to a child’s intellectual and social development, necessary for Student Success.

LEARN MORE
Portrait of a
The Portrait of a Titan is a collective endeavor that engaged our community in developing a collective vision that articulates the aspirations of every student in the Berea City School District. The Portrait of a Titan is the first step in framing a new vision for our school district and revolves around three guiding questions:
• What are our community’s hopes, dreams, and aspirations for our young people?
• What skills and mindsets do our children need for success in this rapidly changing and complex world?
• What are the implications for the design of the learning experiences—and equitable access to those experiences—we provide in our school systems?
The Portrait of a Titan is the “North Star” to help guide the district.
About the Process
Beginning in October 2021, our school community engaged in a process to make 21st-century learning a reality for all students. The ultimate goal was to unite our community in shaping our district’s future direction through the Portrait of a Titan design. This approach involved the entire school community—educators in partnership with students, parents, businesses, and others to ensure a meaningful impact in our schools. Students, parents, business leaders, community leaders, faith leaders, higher education professionals, teachers, school counselors, building principals, and central office administrators came together to create our Portrait of a Titan Design Team. Throughout the community, there are diverse perspectives, and it is important to honor and respect those perspectives. This committee was tasked with identifying core competencies that every Berea City School District student should possess and understanding how these competencies would help prepare students to succeed in a quickly changing world.

WISDOM BEGINS IN WONDER
CELEBRATING THE CLASS OF 2024
Watch the BMHS Eleventh Commencement Ceremony
Friends and family gathered on May 24 to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the Class of 2024 during the eleventh Berea-Midpark High School commencement ceremony. Held outdoors against the stunning backdrop of a setting sun, the event marked a significant moment in the lives of the graduates, symbolizing the end of one chapter and the beginning of their next journey. Each student walked across the stage to receive their diploma, surrounded by the support of the Titans community and the pride of their accomplishments.
Dr. Mark Smithberger, principal of Berea-Midpark High School, acted as the master of ceremonies, acknowledging the Berea Board of Education, BCSD staff, and everyone who played a role in guiding the students toward academic excellence.
Senior Jordyn Maddox shared a reflection on her journey of overcoming her fear of public speaking, using it as a metaphor for the growth and transformation experienced by the entire Class of 2024. She acknowledged the unique challenges they faced, especially adapting to the changes brought by the global pandemic, which taught them invaluable lessons in perseverance and critical thinking. Jordyn encouraged her classmates to dream big, take risks, and face their futures with confidence and resilience.
Jadallah
Fellow senior Hamzah Jadallah reflected on the difficulties the class endured, emphasizing how these challenges shaped them into the strong and resilient individuals they are today. He paid tribute to the teachers and staff, with a special mention of Ms. Theresa Hahn, who left a lasting impact. He shared her advice, “Never lose your light,” urging his classmates to keep that inner light shining no matter what obstacles life brings. His speech highlighted both individual journeys and the collective strength of the class, inspiring his peers to continue pushing forward.
Following the student speeches, Dr. Smithberger took a moment to recognize the numerous accomplishments of the graduating class, from academic honors and scholarships to athletic achievements and community service.
Superintendent Tracy Wheeler then addressed the graduates, encouraging them to embrace the values of the district’s “Portrait of a Titan,” focusing on innovation, critical thinking, empathy, adaptability, and leadership. She reminded them that the Titans community fully supports their future endeavors and that they have the potential to make a positive impact on the world.
As the Class of 2024 stood among cheers and applause, they reflected on their journey—the hard work, growth, and triumphs that brought them to this moment. AVID, short for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program designed for students in grades 9 through 12, aimed at preparing those in the academic middle for admission to fouryear colleges and universities. Throughout their high school years, students enroll in an AVID elective course that equips them with essential skills needed for academic advancement, with the ultimate objective of pursuing higher education.
The cornerstone of the AVID program is its elective course, which lends crucial support to students as they challenge themselves by taking more demanding honors or Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Within this course, students receive instruction in study techniques, note-taking strategies, effective time management, writing and research proficiencies, all while immersing themselves in a collegeoriented atmosphere. Additionally, the class encompasses valuable lessons in organizational tactics and conducts tutoring sessions led by college students, offering indispensable support for excelling in a demanding academic curriculum.
Additionally, the AVID program opens doors to valuable resources regarding colleges and universities. This includes enlightening field trips, inspiring guest speakers, guidance from college tutors, information about scholarships, and insights into college admission prerequisites.
Comprehensive K-12 Library Program
School library programs are changing rapidly, with a focus on technology, hands-on learning, and makerspaces, which are housed in all of our schools. These programs aim to create adaptable environments that help students grow into skilled, confident learners.
Camp Mi-Bro-Be
The name Mi-Bro-Be is derived from the combined names of Middleburg Heights, Brook Park, and Berea. This immersive week-long outdoor education program is available to all sixth-grade students. Each “team” of sixth grade students has the unique chance to camp amidst the beautiful woods of Camp Whitewood. Accompanied by dedicated teachers, high school student cabin counselors, and camp directors, this experience is designed to deliver a meaningful and memorable blend of learning and teambuilding activities. Notably, graduating seniors consistently regard their sixthgrade camp experience as one of the standout highlights of their school journey.

Students with and without disabilities come together to participate in various athletic activities, fostering an environment where every student feels valued and included. The friendships and connections formed through this program extend beyond sports, influencing our school culture positively.
Through Unified Sports, our students are also developing Portrait of a Titan competencies. Students cultivate empathy by understanding and appreciating the perspectives and abilities of their teammates. They learn to recognize and value the unique contributions of each individual, fostering an environment of mutual respect. Students are also given opportunities to lead by example, take initiative, and support their teammates in various capacities. We believe that these types of experiences, both in and out of the classroom, are vital in shaping our students into well-rounded, empathetic, and responsible individuals.

As positive role models, LINK Crew Leaders help to create a structure that connects every incoming freshman with a caring upperclassman from their first day through the end of their freshman year. The student leaders help the freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful in school as well as build connected relationships.

Educational Support Services
Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports
(PBIS), also called Positive Behavior Supports (PBS), is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes in school communities while preventing problem behavior. The key attributes of PBIS include preventive activities, data-based decision making, and a problem solving orientation.
Response to Intervention
RtI is a comprehensive school-wide model for identifying “at-risk” students through the use of universal screeners, and by providing preventative intervention to students by aligning assessment and instruction to inform school stakeholders about how to best meet the needs of students.
Gifted Education
The needs of gifted students are met through a continuum of services and strategies, with parents seen as partners sharing this responsibility. These strategies encompass various aspects of academic and social development. Practices such as cluster grouping differentiation, subject and whole grade acceleration, the ASPIRE program includes self-contained elementary gifted classes, a coaching model, independent study, internships, mentorships, and advanced course options that may be used to meet identified students’ needs within and outside the school day.
The Berea City School District recognizes that every student is unique, bringing their own set of needs, talents, and aspirations to the classroom. The district maintains an unwavering commitment to student success, with educators striving to meet diverse needs and valuing each student for their individuality regardless of background, income, or cognitive ability.
The district’s personalized educational approach includes strong early childhood programs for a solid foundation, advanced academic opportunities, comprehensive literacy support, and targeted intervention, ensuring success for all students. The district’s continuum of gifted programs empowers high-achievers to excel in their areas of interest.
John’s Safe Place
In memory of their son, the Haney family has created John’s Safe Place rooms at local schools across Northeast Ohio. Both the district’s high school and middle school contain a special room where students can come to if they are feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed, or just need a safe place to decompress and calm down. The room features an aquarium, puzzles, uplifting wall art and a comfortable couch.
English Language Learner Program (ELL)
This program provides support to students attempting to understand and function in a new cultural or academic environment. This service is delivered during school hours. ELL tutors provide intensive instruction to support English language acquisition for ELL students. Students enrolled in the ELL Program come from a variety of cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic, and academic backgrounds.
Special Education Services
The district offers a comprehensive range of special education services spanning from preschool to high school. The district envisions an integrated learning environment between general and special education. All members of the learning community take responsibility for providing a personalized education plan to meet the individualized needs of students to ensure success.
Right At School
This program has been designed to provide quality educational and recreational activities and offers enrichment in areas such as language, arts and crafts, sports, music, homework assistance, and much more. The program provides a safe, fun, and often times educational experience before and after school.
Summer Camp
The camp is designed to meet the needs of working parents or others who have a desire for interesting, supervised activities for their children. Children who have completed kindergarten through 6th grade are eligible to enroll. Children will participate in a wide variety of experiences including sports, outdoor games, arts, crafts, science activities, and field trips; all built around a weekly theme. Campers will have daily access to the gym and playground and swimming at our community recreation center swimming pools.
Finances
The Berea City School District acknowledges the vital role that school facilities play in its financial well-being. As an ongoing strategic initiative, the district consistently assesses how changes to facilities can positively impact overall financial stability. By leveraging emerging technology trends and adhering to best practices, the district optimizes purchasing decisions to reduce costs.
The Office of the Treasurer plays a pivotal role in promoting and supporting innovation, both at the district and building levels, allocating resources with a purpose. Throughout the budget planning process, the district’s primary objective is to allocate funds where they have the most significant impact - the classroom. The district firmly believes that by prioritizing investments in the classroom, it can make a tangible and enduring contribution to enhancing the quality of education for all students.
The district remains dedicated to efficient operations, prudent management of resources, and the unwavering goal of providing the best possible educational experience for our students while ensuring fiscal sustainability.
2023 Association of School Business Officials International’s (ASBO) Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the District’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)
The District received the Meritorious Budget Award, for the eleventh consecutive year, which recognizes excellence in school budget presentation. 125 school districts in the United States and Canada received this award, and only 4 districts in Ohio received the award.
Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the CAFR from the Government Finance Officer Association. The GFOA has recognized the District’s commitment to transparent financial reporting for the past thirty consecutive years.
The Auditor of State Award with Distinction for the filing of the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and timely financial reports, as well as receiving a “clean” audit report. This is the tenth consecutive year this was awarded to the District.

Parent and Community Involvement
The Berea City School District values strong connections between its schools and the community. The district acknowledges the importance of a comprehensive support network, places high value on parental engagement, actively seeks collaboration with community partners, and enthusiastically embraces occasions to highlight exceptional achievements.
The Education Foundation
The Foundation supports and enhances educational opportunities for students served by the Berea City School District. Over $26,000 in grants were awarded to educators for projects that enhance educational experiences for students in the district.
Parent-Teacher Associations
A strong Parent-Teacher Association at every school, and early childhood backed by volunteers, supports the learning experiences for all students. Each school has its own PTA, which belongs to and cooperates with the Berea City School District PTA Council. All elementary, middle, and high school PTA units were named as a 2019-2021 National PTA School of Excellence. The School of Excellence program supports and celebrates partnerships between PTAs and schools that work to improve the educational experience and school environment for every child. As a National PTA School of Excellence, at our schools, families feel welcomed and empowered to support student success, and PTA is a key partner for continuous school improvement.
P.E.A.K.
A parent support group started in 2014 by parents of children in the special education programs in partnership with Berea City School District.
ImPACT
The parent advocacy group for gifted services in the district. Formerly founded as LINK, this group holds quarterly meetings to connect and support parents, and to share information about gifted kids. It promotes collaboration between Parents, Administrative staff, Children, and Teachers to impact educational options for gifted students in the district.
Southwest Regional Business Advisory Council
Berea City Schools, Polaris Career Center, Brooklyn City Schools, Fairview Park City Schools, Olmsted Falls City Schools, North Olmsted City Schools, and Strongsville City Schools are working collaboratively toward the shared goal of developing students that are prepared for college, career, or military upon graduation from high school. The advantage of meeting as a regional business advisory council is that participants will be able to assess workforce/business needs in relation to the development of student skills in schools from a regional perspective versus solely the needs of one community.
Grandparents & Other Kinship Caregivers Support Group
This group offers support for these caregivers to come together, share experiences, and access valuable information and assistance from the school district. It provides a sense of community and a space for discussing the unique challenges they face. Through this support group, caregivers can find guidance, emotional support, and practical advice to navigate the educational system and ensure the well-being and academic success of the children in their care.
Gold Card Club
Since the early 1960s, the Berea City School District has encouraged its residents, 60 or older, to attend school events free of charge through the Gold Card. Members are admitted free of charge to any school-sponsored event in which students participate. This includes plays or music concerts and home athletic events during regular season play.
Titan Loving Care (TLC) Rooms
These small spaces in our schools do very big things. Our TLC rooms, which stand for Titan Loving Care, are full of basic necessities like school supplies, clothes, hygiene products, food, and other essentials for students in need. Often times, students may experience barriers in life, overall impacting their education. The goal of our TLC rooms is to provide students with the basic resources they need to succeed in school and to help reduce barriers to education. TLC rooms are stocked through community donations.
Military Family Support & Veterans Outreach
The Berea City School District proudly supports the many military-connected families in our community. All of our schools are recognized as Purple Star Schools, demonstrating our commitment to assisting with enrollment, parental deployment, and academic support. Our staff work closely with counselors to ensure smooth transitions for students and families.
The district launched a Veterans Outreach Committee in the 2022-23 school year to create meaningful opportunities for engagement between Veterans, military families, and our school community. Through this initiative, we aim to strengthen our connection with Veterans and honor the sacrifices made by our military families.
