I personally know all three candidates for Mayor this election.

Vice Mayor Christina Strawbridge is clearly the best candidate, not only has she served on the Benicia City Council for seven years but has been involved within Benicia for 35 years as a community volunteer and small business owner.

As her colleague on the current Council, I have relied on her experience and leadership in coming to understand the issues the City

faces. I have seen firsthand her love for Benicia, her ability to work with everyone and common sense approach.

As Mayor, I know that she will use her skills as a collaborator to get the best from her colleagues on behalf of the community. She has a record of getting big things done, and Benicia has great challenges and opportunities on the horizon. I look forward to working with her on this new era of change.

I have known Christina Strawbridge for many years, and served with her on the Benicia City Council for five of those years. We also participated on several committees together as Council Members.

Through it all, it was obvious that we shared similar philosophies regarding public service, including the importance of reaching out and actively listening to members of the community, making decisions and casting votes for what is truly best for our town, and always remembering that elected officials work for the citizens, not the other way around.

Christina loves Benicia, and will continue to work hard for our town.

During these uncertain times, it is extremely important to elect someone with experience who will be able to navigate us through the COVID-19 crisis, and lead us into and beyond recovery. Christina has demonstrated that she has the skills and abilities to provide that leadership, and that is why I am endorsing her. Christina Strawbridge is clearly the best candidate for Mayor in this election.

It’s a bit difficult to find the silver lining in the multiple challenges that we are facing. The pressures of the pandemic, the economic downturn, the unrelenting heat and now the fires. But as relentless as all of the pressures are, the people of this town will always step up.

As of this writing, Benicia firefighters are engaged in fighting the many blazes that are taking place all across Northern California.

Benicia Police Department is also involved.

Animal rescue groups are bringing livestock to the Solano County Fairground while many Benicia residents open their homes to evacuees. When disaster strikes, we step up to the frontline. We roll up our sleeves, put on our masks and get to work.

There are indeed more of us that are in need, and various Benicia community groups and small businesses have stepped up to help by making food and support more available. And in the midst of all this, school has started. Children are back in virtual school and parents are learning how to help their children while working at their jobs from home. None of this is easy, but with optimism and grit, Benicia citizens are making the best of it.

Remember to support small businesses and our restaurants who are making heroic efforts to remain viable. Every purchase helps.

And so perhaps it is in this essence of coming together that we find the silver lining. As challenge after challenge berates us, we draw together in support of each other. Our tenacious positivity and sense of community leads us in the charge forward; and through this darkness, our light shines. .

Genevieve Hand Fitness industry professionals are a notoriously optimistic crowd. They exude positivity and are vessels of seemingly endless energy. But today, fitness professionals carry a tinge of anxiety in their voice. Theirs is one of the many industries hit especially hard by COVID-19 closures. Many fitness centers shifted to a virtual presence early on – offering group classes via Zoom or other streaming services, hoping to get back to normal sooner rather than later. Well, now it’s later, and those who have survived thus far have endured the expense of a brief re-opening and a rapid re-shuttering. But fitness professionals here in Benicia haven’t taken all this lying down. They’ve harnessed their optimism, energy, and yes, probably a little of that anxiety, into ingenuity. In order to adapt to this strange new reality, they’ve returned physical activity to its origins: the outdoors.

Benicia Jazzercise has transformed their front patio into an outdoor studio. While, at the time that this article is being written, only a few classes are currently being offered per day, franchise owner Leslie Rowley explains that they will soon be opening a second outdoor space in their back parking lot, allowing her to expand class offerings during usable hours.

Benicia Jazzercize has always been concerned with keeping their noise down for residential neighbors, and that concern has deepened with the move to the outdoors. “We want to continue to be a good neighbor,” says Leslie. Therefore, she has reserved late morning and early evening hours for in-person, outdoor classes, and is holding late evening classes only online. Benicia Jazzercize offers cardio and strength-building classes for all ages and movers.

They offer a 10:30am class that is specifically geared toward those with mobility challenges and are also a Silver&Fit provider. All classes observe social “disdance-ing.”

This shift to outdoor spaces has been easier for some fitness outfits than others. Training Loft 714 doesn’t have usable outdoor space on their property.

Luckily, owner Denise Brazeal received permission from the City to hold her classes at Benicia City Park. “They’re nothing like our studio classes,” says Denise, “but those who are coming really love them!”

She is averaging 20-25 people per class, all while maintaining more than 6 feet between participants.

“Actually, people are usually staying 10 or more feet apart,” says Denise. While all participants must reserve a space in class ahead of time, Denise has welcomed curious onlookers to sign up for a $10 drop-in class. Due to city noise ordinances, Training Loft 714 has had to limit their class offerings to 9am M/W/F and 5pm T/Th. At the time that this article is being written, Denise hopes the city will begin allowing weekend classes as well.

In comparison, Benicia Crossfit’s COVID retrofit came a bit more naturally. The facility already had an outdoor courtyard used for training. “We’re really lucky that we were already in a position to offer a

complete workout with equipment when this thing hit,” says owner Craig Moore. Benicia Crossfit already had an online infrastructure which allowed them to continue providing their personal coaching services through the initial closure. Since receiving the “OK” to open outdoor activities, they’ve been able to resume their regular classes, albeit with some restrictions.

Their class sizes are currently limited to 6 participants who can register through an app. Temperatures are taken at the entry gate and participants are required to stay within their spray-paint denoted area. 15 minutes are reserved between classes for clean-up and transition. “I would never put my members at risk,” says Craig.

Griffin Fitness, with their focus on personal training and one-on-one sessions, has also been able to resume close to normal operations since moving some of their equipment out to the space behind their building.

“We’ve been observing all the proper social distancing guidelines and been very careful about sanitizing equipment,” says owner Lisa McVeigh, “no one is allowed to share equipment.” At the moment, they are operating on a one-on-one training session model only, except for a small bootcamp class on Mondays and Wednesdays. All sessions and classes are by appointment only and, like other fitness centers, they also have an online presence. Lisa notes that they are experiencing a gradual build in membership – possibly due to their new enrollment discount of 10%, ongoing at the time that this article is written.

Benicia Fitness on First Street is one of the few that has been able to maintain anything that resembles an “open gym” format. The facility already had an outdoor patio with equipment, which has turned out to be a saving grace. Owner Joy Rund explains that she has turned the patio into a hybrid space, holding the various classes she offers in the mornings and evenings (spin, Zumba, kickboxing, yoga, and Restorative Yoga), and becoming a haven for weightlifters in the in-between hours. While these in-between hours resemble an open gym, each individual there has gone through an appointment system to reserve the hour that they are allotted, their temperature is taken, and they are required to maintain social distancing guidelines. “They’re required to sanitize their equipment after use and encouraged to also sanitize it before use,” says Joy, “that way they can have peace of mind.” In early August, Joy received permission from the City to hold some of her classes, including the ever-popular Zumba class, at Benicia City Park, enabling her to serve more members at once.

Jasmine Powers, owner of j.POWERStudio, was quick to transform the parking lots of her main studio into an outdoor exercise oasis. “As soon as the second closure notice came through, I went right out to Lowe’s and bought all the Astro Turf they had,” she says. She’s used this Astro Turf to turn her asphalt into a grassy park. She is currently offering all the classes she offered pre-COVID, aside from pole-dancing, and has been able to keep her teaching staff working at pre-COVID capacity – a feat for any business.

Participants typically stay roughly 10 feet apart in all classes, which include Barre, Pilates, yoga, chair dancing, spin, and more. Jasmine had considered moving a spin class outdoors before COVID hit, “…but I hadn’t really taken it seriously until the second closure.” The verdict? People seem to love it.

“It’s going to be really hard for me to get people back in the studio!”

While this pandemic has brought hard times, these feats of ingenuity and creativity are direct byproducts of those hard times. New opportunities have presented themselves out of necessity. Early on in the closures, for instance, Training Loft 714 gained an online-only clientele which consists of individuals in other cities and even other states. Despite the successes these businesses have seen, they’re not out of the woods yet. Each of these outfits has reported a loss in membership of anywhere from 20% to 50%; and they’re worried about those members they’ve lost. “It’s really important to stay healthy and de-stress right now,” says Craig Moore; and fitness plays a big role in that. For those uncomfortable rejoining group classes, even in an outdoor setting, each of these facilities report plans to continue providing virtual classes and services.

Wheels in Motion: Keeps Benicia Moving

Bitsy Hall The effects of Covid-19 have led to economic stress for many businesses and families on a global scale. As residents of Benicia can tell you, this economic hit has not left our town unscathed: we have seen several local and beloved businesses close their doors. While watching so much of our reality dissolve and change, we look for remnants of familiarity and hope where we can. Though the pandemic has transformed once cherished storefronts into empty windows, there are pillars in Benicia that have remained. Wheels in Motion, Benicia’s one and only bike and skate shop, has endured the trying times of Covid-19.

Greg Andrada opened Wheels in Motion in 1991 as a roller skating shop. Because Benicia had no other business like it, Greg and his wife Joy saw this as a business opportunity. During this time, roller skates were “the rage.” Though roller skates were trending in the early 1990s (and some may argue are making a comeback today), there was another group looking for a shop to fulfill their hobby’s needs: skateboarders. With activity growing from the Benicia Skate Park on West K, Greg received requests to supply Benicia skaters with skateboards and needed accessories. With this, he began to expand his selection. Over the years, Wheels in Motion has grown to include a lengthy list of different bikes, boards, and accessories.

Currently, Wheels in Motion is really busy. Their customer base has expanded from skateboarding and cycling enthusiasts to a much broader collection of locals. The unique circumstances brought on by sheltering in place and social distancing have led many to explore alternative options for exercise, commuting, and recreation. With gyms remaining closed, many people have been forced to switch up their fitness routines from exercise bikes to road bikes. They are coming into the shop in droves, some to get their old bikes that had been collecting dust tuned up and ready for the road, and others to purchase new bikes and accessories for the entire family. For many in our community that are working from home, getting the whole family outdoors, whether that is on a skateboard or a bike, is more crucial than ever for mental health and basic sanity. Wheels in Motion has these folks covered with bikes and skateboards of all sizes.

Even those who are commuting to work have had to change things up, especially those that relied on taking the bus. In order to stay distant and safe, many who were accustomed to taking public transportation across the Benicia bridge have opted for biking. With the pedestrian path on the Benicia Bridge, bikers have a safe and reliable option for an alternative to public transportation or carpooling. While more business is certainly a good thing, it does come with complications. Demand is high as ever for the products Greg is bringing into his shop, but supply remains low with disruptions from Covid-19. Greg’s goal is to keep finding ways to serve the needs of his customers and, most importantly, to get through the chaos of 2020. Surviving the effects of an unpredictable pandemic has shown just how anchored Wheels in Motion is in our community.

The couple bought Star Sports in 1987 when it was located at the corner of Military and West 7th Street (across from Taco Bell). They moved to their new facility at 5474 Gateway Plaza in 2007.

Before COVID-19, about 50% of their business was supplying uniforms and equipment to schools and colleges, while the remaining 50% was youth sports leagues. High School clients include Benicia, Rio Vista, Armijo, Campolindo, Vanden, Liberty-Brentwood and Rodriguez High Schools. Colleges they serve are Contra Costa, Laney, and Los Medanos.

On a personal note, the Strawbridge family have been customers since 1987. My son Andrew served as the Athletic Director at both St. Patrick St. Vincent High School (SPSV) and Albany High School and was a loyal customer. Andrew's direct contact with Star Sports was long time friend Roger Kesteloot. Andrew had coached all of Roger's sons’ basketball teams while at SPSV. The Kestleloot sons, Evan, Kyle and Ryan, all worked for Star Sports while growing up, and Roger continues on a part time basis even though he now lives in Sacramento.

Obviously, the majority of their business and store foot traffic is dependent on the COVID-19 guidelines being lifted and schools getting back in session.

Carl and Janice have been married for 40 years and have 3 lovely daughters, Hollie, Hilary, and Heather.

They are also the proud grandparents of 10 children. As a 33 year old business in Benicia, they are anxiously waiting to return to pre-pandemic business.

I think we all can agree with them.

Dr. Tom Campbell (Incumbent)

Education: BS & MA Chemistry: UCSB, MS & Orthodontics: Marquette University, MBA: UC Berkley, JD: Santa Clara University Over the years, I’ve started or been involved in projects that preserve our open spaces north of town, improve open government, campaign reform and protect our climate. I’ve voted against water rate increases and oil trains. I have a long history of public service. A graduate of UC Berkeley (BA) and San Francisco State University (MA), I spent my career in local government in the fields of Community Development, Affordable Housing, and Redevelopment. I retired in 2008 as Director of Community Development for the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, where I headed the redevelopment of Mather and McClellan Air Force Bases into commercial uses, managed neighborhood improvement programs in low income sections of Sacramento County, and helped finance thousands of units of affordable housing. After a four year period of living in Costa Rica, and giving my daughter the experience of living in a foreign culture, my family moved to Benicia in 2012. Shortly thereafter I was appointed to the Planning Commission, where I led the critical questioning of the Crude by Rail project that ultimately led to its unanimous rejection by the Commission and City Council. In 2016, I led all candidates and was elected to the City Council. In my time on the council, I have led the effort to secure the donation of the Neptune’s Daughter statue, advocated for downtown businesses with the Downtown Dollars program, and led the push for a mandatory mask ordinance which was first defeated, then ultimately approved.

Timed to coincide with New York Fashion Week, it followed a year of a historic financial meltdown and was considered by some as a fashion stimulus package. 2008 had marked the lowest retail sales in 35 years as store fronts became papered up as people had lost the urge to shop. The one day event "Fashion's Night Out" included 800 stores throughout the city that stayed open late offering food, celebrity sightings and lots of fashion. The Olsen twins, Mary Kate and Ashley, served drinks at Bergdorf Goodman while Wintour appeared with Michael Kors in Queens and later were joined by Gwen Stefani and Victoria Beckham as they circled the City.

So, how do you translate a fashion event like that to Benicia? In 2009 there were 6 women's clothing stores and 30 plus hair salons on First Street.

The concept was to bring the businesses together for a week of events with fashion and beauty themes, culminating with a night of shopping and a runway show. The first runway show took place at the Inn at Benicia Bay and featured designs from each store along with Bay Area talent. Benicia Main Street helped coordinate the stores and publicity the first 2 years because of the positive impact to Downtown.

The concept breathed some life into the retail economy and as the event grew up, it changed venues, store involvement and in the last few years it attracted up to 500 attendees.

By 2014, there were only 2 boutiques left and by the next year only 1 remained. First Street had changed from retail boutiques, antique and gift stores, to restaurant row. Benicia Fashion Runway became broader in its appeal, with

the help of Richard Hallmarq, a Sacramento designer and contestant on Season 11 of Project Runway. The event has hosted 18 designers from the popular reality fashion show, along with established couture designers and, in one case, a fashion legend. Patricia Field, who won several Emmys as the costume designer for the HBO series Sex and the City and was nominated for an Oscar for her work on the movie Devil Wears Prada, brought her collection to Benicia directly from New York Fashion Week. After 11 years, this two day established fashion event has become known throughout the Bay Area for attracting a collection of the best of international fashion, including professional models, some of which appeared on America's Top Model. A highlight of the show in 2019 was famed designer Richie Rich, of Heatherette, bringing down the house by roller skating the runway, introducing his collection and the show’s finale.

Fast forward to 2020 and the year of COVID-19. Fashion doesn't seem to be a priority as we deal with a health crisis, the likes of which we haven’t seen for over a century. What is interesting is that Benicia's Downtown has started a renaissance when it comes to retail. There are more women's boutiques that have opened and are succeeding during the uncertainty of the pandemic.

They bring a different vibe with a cool merchandise mix and have an online presence as part of their business model; something that has become more important than ever.

Perhaps with this new energy, Benicia Fashion Runway can go back to its roots of showcasing the best of fashion in Benicia on the catwalk. Stay tuned!

Get out to the valley! We all deserve an outdoor, relaxing experience.

Maura Sullivan As we approach the last few weeks of consistently fantastic summer weather, we all have vacation on our minds. Don’t get me wrong, Benicia’s bay breeze isn’t too shabby, but why neglect our Northern California neighbors? My staycation/day trip choice is where they make the good juice: Napa Valley.

Lucky for you, I’m a Benician who has recently converted into a Napkin, and I’ve got the intel.

As we’re all aware, California is restricted when it comes to indulging in some luxury activities, but wine tasting has some advantages. Outdoor seating with a great view is already offered around the valley. The only change up is reservations are a must and party size is limited. You’ll find this request is not difficult once you’re sitting on a terrace admiring your gem-color filled glass, glistening in the warm summer sun.

A month or so ago, a colleague and I were invited to an industry visit to a beautiful boutique winery named Young Inglewood Vineyards. We turned off the 29 and headed down a small St. Helena

road. Gated homes that only got bigger the further we drove. As we parked and crossed the driveway down a gravel path surrounded by lavender and grape vines, I felt the normalcy and comfort I’ve been looking for, for months. Reading “surrounded by vines” is obviously a common description in the valley, but there is a different atmosphere to small-producing wineries. It feels as if someone is inviting you into their extravagant home to share their recent craftsmanship. At each tasting visit, I’m always in awe of the room, right down to the tasting table. Young Inglewood’s table did not disappoint. As we passed the collected artwork to the tasting room, the light changed. The wall had lifted and opened to greet the vineyard. The wine was perfectly poured into 7 glasses.

Placed in a perfect crescent shape. The table looked like it had jumped out of a Restoration Hardware magazine, but with a homemade feel. The glassware was delicate but made a statement as it caught the light of the sun and reflected colors onto our tasting sheets. The reds were complex and robust. They almost

confused me for a higher elevation red.

The whites were refreshing and gave you a hint of that Napa Valley Chardonnay warmth. The rose … well let’s just say it’s unsweetened, drinkable candy to dry rose connoisseurs.

This experience is not hard to obtain, even in these strange times.

VisitNapaValley.com offers a list of open wineries and can even categorize them by wine varietal. This way you can jump straight to your favorites or try what you’re most curious about. For example, if wine tasting is not in your budget or not what you’re interested in, Yountville offers great spots for picnicking. BYOB (bring your own booze) is not frowned upon there. Especially at the Veteran’s Park. You can hop over to JCB, grab a bottle of bubbles and skip next door for some great to-go cheese options.

Cupcakes from Fox & Fawn Bakehouse always pack well. Of course, you can’t forget to grab some savory goodies from One House Bakery for take away.

Get out to the valley! We all deserve an outdoor, relaxing experience. Stay safe and sip out of a fancy glass!

Java Point Café

— Socrates Jeannine Mendoza Ed.D This Socrates quote is particularly apt for the restaurant industry during the current COVID-19 pandemic, both nationally, throughout our country’s fifty states, and locally, here in Benicia. One unique restaurant that has transformed itself is Java Point Cafe, run by the Alberto family and their partners, Casey and J.P. De La Cruz.

Java Point Café opened in 2006 as a family catering business that morphed into a family café. The Alberto clan came from the Philippines. All four kids worked at the restaurant while in high school, and stayed on after graduation to develop the vision of their restaurant. Over the years, Java Point Café expanded their menu beyond basic coffee shop fare to include paninis, crab and avocado melts, and specialty egg dishes like the ultra-popular crab benedict and, my favorite, tapsilog. A Filipino breakfast dish, tapsilog features marinated tri-tip steak pieces that have been cooked and placed on a bed of garlic rice with

two softly fried eggs on top. The sharp flavor of the accompanying pickled green papaya, and the fresh tomatoes and cucumber contrast nicely with the meat, rice and eggs, creating a taste treat trifecta. Unbelievably yummy!

Java Point Cafe is no slouch when it comes to coffee, offering coffee specialties that rival any ubiquitous coffeehouse chain. They boast a great selection that includes chai latte, hot chocolate, espresso, café mocha and even a cold honey lavender latte. Their superlative raspberry scones are to die for and the house-made banana walnut bread is delicious, as is the blueberry walnut coffee cake.

Dinner menu items include chicken satay with peanut curry dipping sauce, cracked beef with onions (another Filipino dish), and garlic butter jumbo shrimp. Also available are shrimp and pork lumpia, the traditional Filipino version of eggrolls, served with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Sides include a delicious Hawaiian-style macaroni salad

that is both creamy and luscious, fruit salad, a cucumber salad, and a savory Java rice .

The restaurant’s management is committed to the health and safety of both customers and staff and is offering to-go menu items only, for the time being.

But recently, Java Point Café partnered with The Chill, a wine bar two doors down and began offering menu items at The Chill’s outdoor seating. This means you can enjoy Java Point Café’s delicious menu items while drinking wine or beer in an outdoor setting. It is heartening to see two Benicia businesses work together to provide a relaxing and delicious alternative to purchasing food for takeout only. These two businesses should be lauded for thinking outside the box and creating an opportunity for the public to enjoy food and drink in a safe outdoor location.

As soon as she walks through the door of the Wingate Real Estate agency, she is met by Mark Chambers, a man in his early 40s with jet black hair and a penchant for overdressing.

“As requested,” Angela says, handing him his order from Farm & Flour. “What’s on your agenda today?” Taking a sip of his coffee he answers, “I have a listing appointment at 2pm on Cove Way.” Angela’s face lights up with interest, “That’s a beautiful property! It’s the house with a view of the Carquinez Straits that overlooks that lovely little beach… that’s waterfront living at its finest. That house is worth 2.0 million at least, how did you…? Never mind, I don’t want to know, just make it happen.”

“Of course! That’s what I do, you know” he says, preening a bit…”and I have a date tonight,” Mark boasts. Looking at her watch, Angela says, “I have a showing at 4 today and then I have to run home and change to meet Bruce at Bella Siena for dinner.”

At that moment, Angela notices a black sports car slowing almost to a stop in front of her office, then quickly accelerating down the street.

“Angela? Hey, Angela! You okay?” Mark asks, concerned. “I’m not sure,” she answers, “let me ask you something. Have you heard who’s buying the Baxter house? I already poked around on the MLS and found nothing.” Mark replies, “No... but I’ll see what I can find. It could be a private sale.” “Yeah… maybe,” Angela murmurs with a somewhat worried tone.

Later, Angela heads home to change for dinner with Bruce. She pulls into the driveway and heads into the house, only stopping to grab water from the fridge.

Angela slips into a green vintage strapless dress she picked up from Rags to Riches and gold heels

to match her gold accessories, one of which is the bracelet Bruce gifted her for her birthday earlier that year.

Angela hears the door close downstairs.

Apprehensively, she calls out, “Payton, honey….

Payton, is that you?” She slowly creeps downstairs and looks around the corner into the dining room.

“Hi, Mom.” Startled, Angela reels backward, letting out a scream. Payton grabs her before she can fall. “I’m sorry, Mom! Are you okay?” asked Payton.

Catching her breath, Angela manages to speak, “Yes, I’m fine…” Then, chiding her son, “Boy, why didn’t you answer me?”

“I had my headphones in! You sure are jumpy...”

“Yes, I am a bit. I left $40 on the table for food, your dad and I shouldn’t be too late.” “Okay, cool.”

Shrugging, Payton starts walking upstairs, but pauses. “Did we get a new car?” he asks. Angela turns to look up at him. “What are you talking about?

What car?” Payton responds with a surprised look on his face, “The one in the driveway!” Striding toward the front door she thinks, what is he talking about?

She opens the door and, suddenly, she can’t breathe.

Right there, right in front of her, is the past she so desperately tried to leave behind. Barely getting a breath out, Angela says in a low voice, “Connie …what are you doing here… How did you find…”

Angela stands frozen, not believing her own eyes and anxiously hoping this is a nightmare she’ll wake up form at any moment.

Connie looks back at Angela like a cat that finally caught the mouse. “Hello Ree – I mean, Angela… that is what you're calling yourself these days, isn’t it? I’ve come to talk to you about a house.”

The Talented Mr. Ripley and Venticello’s Ristorante Italiano

By his own account, Tom Ripley,

played by a young Matt Damon, is talented at forging signatures, telling lies, and impersonating pretty much anyone. But it only took a borrowed jacket and a little white lie to whisk him into an expenses-paid tour of Italy and an up-close and too-tantalizing taste of the lives of the über rich.

How will the secretive and sly interloper secure his place in a life not his own?

Maybe he’ll befriend Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law) who is heir to the fortunes of his father’s shipping conglomerate, looking as good as any self-centered cad ever has. Or, our Mr.

First up, try the superb antipasto eggplant. Stuffed with three cheeses, served with hearty marinara sauce.

A great way to get your daily vegetable! Ha. Or, the Calamari Fra Diavolo: calamari steak with a spicy marinara sauce is a very special treat.

Can you say Gorgonzola? Gracie gives a gourmet rating for the yummy Gorgonzola Chicken with fresh spinach, onions and tomatoes in a light, creamy marinara Gorgonzola sauce, tossed with rigatoni.

Topped with more Gorgonzola! The popular Chicken Dill with peas and capers in a creamy dill sauce with bow tie pasta is also a favorite.

Fall Fashion Trends 2020 Christina Strawbridge Most fashion enthusiasts rely on what they see on the streets in order to predict trends for a season. In major cities around the world, the streets are empty because of quarantine and stay at home orders. There has also been civil unrest that accompanied the pandemic, bringing protests to the streets, some peaceful, others violent, in the fight against racial inequality. Many fashion houses and manufacturers have had to lockdown their operations and, in some cases, have not reopened. Apparel sales have dropped 40% this year with

companies looking to excite customers to shop.

For those top designers that were able to complete their collections for Fall 2020, the runway looked more like a battlefield with hooded parkas and protective padding. Paco Rabanne reflected on a religious theme honoring Saint Joan of Arc, with armor and chainmail. Marc Jacobs and Gucci tried for a look of innocence with nun-like wide white collars and short hemlines.

What to do when streetwear has been transported to Zoom-wear? One strong message coming out of fashion is

comfort. After months of wearing sweats and athletic wear at home, adapting the look to adventuring outside takes a bit of imagination. Trends are showing cropped tops and fitted tanks with baggy pants. This look may not be a great option with additional curves from COVID eating, but there are beautiful knit designs that offer comfort while giving a pulled together look. Designers that showed evening wear attempted to give hope for post-pandemic with the use of sequins and brocade. We can dream, can't we?

Some other important essentials this season: Sneakers are a great option for changing a look, even paired with flowing skirts and wide pants. Ladies, put the stilettos away.

The jacket has been pared down to be more form-fitting.

Having the right cover up to throw on during a Zoom meeting is crucial, especially since working remotely seems to be the mode of operation for the next few months.

Cardigan sweaters are a must for layering, especially in vibrant colors and soft textures. They are a great alternative to the jacket.

A return to grunge with oversized sweatshirts and lots of flannel and ripped clothing.

Say goodbye denim, for now. Jeans and denim are reported to be losing out to comfort. Levi's has announced plans to cut 700 corporate jobs because of plummeting sales. The comfort of an elastic waist wins the moment.

Jeans sales have slowed the last few years and companies like True Religion, Lucky Brand and G-Star Raw have filed for bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, Athleisure has gotten a lift with retailers like Lululemon and Gap's Athleta showing growth in sales of leggings, yoga pants, and joggers.

Finally the "Mask!" Wearing the mask is now universally known to be essential and, in a lot of cases, mandatory. The top accessory for 2020, it seems as if everyone has gotten on board creating a version of face coverings. Designers have replaced their clothing designs with mask collections.

Arturo Rios, a famous hat and fascinator designer, has taken his elaborate designs and turned them upside down, creating spectacular masks for the next gala on your calendar.

2020 will not only be known as the year of Covid-19 but will be remembered for survival fashion. 2021 can't come fast enough for fashion enthusiasts and everyone else on the planet!

Patty Gavin You can follow the news, follow the path, and follow the leader, and now, you can follow the flock.

What, you might ask, is that all about?

Soroptimist International of Benicia, like all service clubs, needs to raise funds to benefit it's many good deeds and worthy causes in the community.

In times of COVID-19, that can be especially challenging. So, here comes the flock...of flamingos...pink flamingos... pink plastic flamingos. Yes, there are pink plastic flamingos in Benicia, six flocks of ten that have "flown" into town. You probably have seen them, staking out their territory on the front lawns of Benicia residents. How do you raise funds with pink plastic flamingos in the front yards of lucky residents?

Soroptimist club member and leader of the flock, Kelly Baldwin, explains: Residents will have a flock of 10 flamingos placed on their lawn, along with a sign that reads "I've been flocked

by Soroptimist International of Benicia," and a flyer posted to the front door explaining why flamingos are invading their yard. The flyer gives options for payments (donations) to have the

flamingos removed and sent along their way. The resident may indicate where they want the flamingos to roost next.

A whimsical way, and some might say a kitschy way, but without a doubt, a fun way to solicit donations to support the various projects and programs of the club.

Because of COVID, the club had to cancel its Fall fundraiser, the SIP with Soroptimist wine tasting event, which has been its major fundraising tool for the last 4 years. However, Soroptimist of Benicia is determined to work hard to raise the needed funds to give back to the community. This year, the Flamingos are the kick-off fundraiser and will be followed by another unique fundraising event, "Savor Benicia." This event will allow participants an intimate look into the heart of our Benicia restaurants. Soroptimist will team up with Restaurants/Bars here in town, each of whom will provide a unique recipe that highlights their Restaurant/ Chef/Owner/Mixologist. Once a month, for 12 months, participants will receive a mailed keepsake recipe card and an email giving them access to a demo of the unique recipe. The recipe card

will include ingredients, directions/ tips/tricks, and highlight the creator/ restaurant/bar. The demo will be recorded to allow participants to watch at their own pace. Sounds like a perfectly unique Christmas gift for family and friends...gourmets and gourmands alike! Look for more information and details down the road...

Soroptimist International of Benicia continues to be passionate about its commitment to provide women and girls, in particular, those who are disadvantaged, with access to the education and training they need to fulfill their dreams of success.
