A Letter From the Editor

With the arrival of July comes the sense that we are well and truly into summer. Kids have fully embraced their summer agenda (or lack thereof), and there’s a contagious sense of joy as they’re seen playing in front yards or gallivanting down First Street midday. The beckoning scent of a neighbor’s backyard barbecue seems ever-present, be it weekday or weekend. Suddenly, it seems absurd that anyone isn’t indulging in a sweet, cold treat every afternoon. Is it possible that this stage of summer is the most care-free? Our anticipation of it is symbolized in the folding chairs left out days in advance of the Torchlight Parade and as we dig around in our seasonal attire for our Old Navy-issued uniforms of T-shirts emblazoned with the Stars and Stripes. As we plan for camping trips and visits to the pool and warm evenings sipping wine with friends. It seems unfair that, just as we’re getting into the swing of summer, the days have already started getting shorter; as if the tilt and orbit of Earth is chiding us to hurry up and make the most of it!

Well, I’m hurrying up and making the most of it. I am stepping back as editor in chief of Benicia Magazine and passing the torch to our art director, and new editor in chief, Cooper Mickelson. I will remain a partner in the business, but look forward to having more time to focus on other projects, and also to seeing what fresh ideas Cooper will bring to the magazine. I have greatly enjoyed bringing Benicia’s stories to our readers for the past four years as editor, but I know that the magazine is in good hands with this transition. Cooper has been involved with the magazine since 2021, when she started her column, Booktails. In 2022, she took over as art director when former art director Margaret Bowles retired. She has helped shape many issues of the magazine since then, not only with her fantastic graphic design skills, but also with her unique perspective on content and deep knowledge of Benicia. We have been lucky to have her as a collaborative voice, and we are grateful that she has chosen to step up to take on this role.

This issue is Cooper’s first as editor in chief. Due to our internal transition, the issue had a truncated production timeline, but I think you’ll find that in spite of that, she’s knocked it out of the park. Enjoy the read and stay tuned for what we believe will be a new and exciting chapter of Benicia Magazine!. B - Genevieve Hand

06 · Maria SantoStefano Plein Air Artist Maria SantoStefano Carries on a Legacy

Maria SantoStefano

The Benicia Plein Air Gallery is featuring the work of Orinda painter Maria SantoStefano during the month of July. Known for her colorful paintings of Benicia and regional scenes, Maria enjoys presenting her work on Benicia’s First Street. “It’s super fun to spend time here, with people and their dogs walking by,” she asserts. “People are so friendly, and happy. And Benicia citizens love their art.”

Born and raised in Illinois, Maria moved to the San Francisco area, where, except for a seven-year stint in Los Angeles, she has remained. She currently lives in Orinda.

“I was always dabbling in art as a kid. I drew and painted portraits and likenesses. I never really thought of being an art major and didn’t know what I would do with an art degree.” She enrolled at University of Illinois, Champaign, taking only a single painting class for non-majors. For the next twenty years, she painted very little.

In 2004, SantoStefano enrolled at the Orinda Community Center hoping to get back into painting. “I got the best instructor I could possibly have, which was Pam Glover’s daughter, Anne Marie Glover.” With Glover’s instruction, SantoStefano sold her first painting – a landscape. “She could just tell you, do this, and do this. And it worked. Consequently, landscape painting really became an addiction and I’ve never gotten tired of it. And that’s all I do; I don’t do any other kind of art.”

Like Maria, Anne Marie was not academically trained. She was mentored by Lundy Siegrist and her mother, from whom she inherited the legacy of California’s impressionist plein air painting tradition. “Pam was a genius. Her work was fresh and immediate. She was an incredible inspiration to me, as was the work of Pam’s fellow members of The Outsiders, specifically Jerry Turner, Randy Sexton, Bill Rushton and Nikki Basch Davis. Anne Marie passed on these traditions to us and encouraged us to do things we probably would never have done on our own. She had an attitude of just do it, get yourself out there and paint. She set up our class to sell our work at a local restaurant. She got us into doing paint outs. My experiences were way beyond what I could have imagined, with incredibly talented painters like Philippe Gandiol also competing at these events. It taught you to paint fast. We did the Epperson paint out,

starting around 2009 or so. We also did the Alameda paint out. They were hard, but fun.”

SantoStefano’s style evolved from a realistic, tight depiction of her subject to a loose, more abstract rendering with brilliant colors, jewel tones, bright orange, greens, pinks and turquoise. Idyllic houses and quaint looking cottages set amidst the trees or along the water are her way of adding a human element. “Early on, I never thought I had any originality, and I was concerned that my paintings would appear cartoonish. The first time someone told me they could recognize my work, I was just stunned.”

She prefers the Mabef Field Easel. “I'm very unconventional in that I have a zillion colors that I wheel around. I don’t want to do experiments with a limited palette. Having all the colors reminds me of what's available, what’s out in the world. Of course, I do mix colors,” she laughs. “My appreciation for the color of the sunny California landscape has helped me loosen up over the years.” Maria still paints regularly with a small group of students drawn together by having studied with the Glovers, with different members calling the locations each week. As time passed, some members of the group have moved away or passed.

In 2009, Maria joined Allison McCrady’s Annex Gallery in the Theatre Square in Orinda; she was represented by McCrady’s AMFA Gallery from 2010 through 2015 and by Show Place Art in Berkeley from 2011 to 2012. She joined the Valley Art Gallery in Walnut Creek in 2009 and the Benicia Plein Air Gallery in 2019. In addition to Anne Marie Glover, SantoStefano studied plein air with Pam Glover, Theresa Onoda, John Finger, and Suzanne D’Arcy. She considers them all to be important teachers. “I’m especially proud to have studied with Anne Marie and Pam, and to be connected with other painters from the Glovers’ classes that are carrying on a legacy, a tradition.”

Maria will be at the gallery to greet visitors on July 5th, 19th, and 26th. To see more of Maria’s artwork and to learn more about the Benicia Plein Air Gallery, visit https://santostefano.weebly. com/, @mxanto1/ on Instagram, and www.BeniciaPleinAir. com. Gallery hours are Friday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. B

There’s nothing like long summer days and a packed calendar of backyard hangs and overnight guests to spark the urge for a quick home refresh. Maybe it’s the guest room that’s become a glorified storage closet, the hallway that’s more gloomy than grand, or the so-called home office that’s one paper pile away from landing you on an episode of Hoarders. Whatever space has fallen by the wayside, all it takes is a little inspiration, a few secondhand gems, and some DIY spirit to turn it into your favorite spot to show off.

Give your home a fresh seasonal glow with secondhand finds and creative DIY projects that make the old feel brand new.

The first, and often least glamorous, step in any home project is clearing out the clutter. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and lose momentum before you even begin, so try breaking the task into smaller, manageable chunks. Better yet, call in some generous friends (and maybe crack open a bottle of wine or two) to turn the purge into a party.

Once you’ve sorted your clutter into three piles (keep, donate, and toss), it’s time to decide where everything goes. Donations are a great way to give your stuff a second life, but it’s always a good idea to call ahead and confirm what each place accepts. And when it comes to trash, especially bulk or specialty items, you’ll want to locate a proper recycling center or disposal site.

Donation Options:

Local Thrift Stores:

While our local Goodwill is no longer accepting donations, spots like Adobe Second Chance Thrift Shop and Eco Thrift are great alternatives.

The White Camel Sale at the Museum of History, Benicia:

A beloved local tradition! They accept donations on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. Just no furniture or clothing, please.

Community Thrift Store (San Francisco):

Willing to make a drive for a good cause? This nonprofit store accepts most common donation items (clothing, books, housewares, electronics) and lets you choose which charity partners benefit from your donation. Bonus: you’ll get a tax receipt!

Buy Nothing Groups:

The Buy Nothing Benicia, CA group on Facebook is a great way to give away items directly to neighbors.

Trash & Recycling:

For anything that’s truly at the end of the line, head to the Republic Services Contra Costa Transfer Station.

Or support local and let someone else handle the heavy lifting by calling Jose’s Junk Removal or Junk180

Now that you’ve cleared the space, you might be staring at it thinking, Now what? This is where the fun begins. With endless inspiration just a click (or stroll) away, you can dive into Pinterest boards, search DIY blogs, or browse home design magazines at the library. One of our favorite ways to spark ideas? Look to local interior designers and DIY pros. They know how to make the most of small spaces, secondhand scores, and Bay Area charm. Check out the Benicia Magazine Instagram this month for recommendations on local creatives who are sure to inspire your next project.

The Filling Station, and local galleries, you’re covered on style. Need something bigger? Local pros like Ironhorse Home, Hobson Painting and Coating, Andrea Escobar Studio, and Appiano Construction have you covered for furniture, updates, design and renovations.

Whatever your vision, you don’t need to leave Benicia to bring it to life.

Need a reminder on why it’s important to shop local? Here are just a few reasons to choose your neighborhood businesses over big corporations:

Your dollars do more here. When you shop local, more of your money stays in your community.

Support local jobs. You’re not just buying a coffee, you’re helping your neighbor pay rent.

It’s all about community. Real people, real connection, real impact.

It’s better for the planet. Less shipping means less waste and a smaller carbon footprint.

Now you’re ready to bring your vision to life! If you’ve hired a local pro, this is your moment to sit back, relax, and watch the transformation unfold. If you’re diving in DIY-style, solo or with friends, it’s time to queue up a great playlist (we’ve even made one just for this issue of Benicia Magazine) and get to work.

Inspiration secured, now it’s time to shop. But wait! Step away from that Amazon tab. Everything you need for your next home project is right here in our own backyard. From secondhand treasures at Adobe Second Chance Thrift Shop, Pocket Monkey Vintage, Antiques on First , and the MOHB White Camel Sale, to one-of-a-kind decor at Le Sparkly Chateau,

Take your time, stay safe, and don’t forget to snap some progress pics along the way. Trust us, there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing just how far your space has come. Need some inspiration on home projects you can complete on your own using secondhand treasures? Here are a few of our favorites:

• Eclectic gallery wall

• Dried flower display

• Turn an unused closet into a cozy home office or reading nook

• Use vintage finds for postcard displays or everyday storage B

Summer is in full swing, heat waves included, and with the long days stretching ahead, many of us feel the pressure to make the most of every sun-soaked moment. Fortunately, at Benicia Magazine, we love finding the perfect events and easygoing adventures to help you enjoy the season in this beautiful waterfront town we’re lucky to call home.

This month, we’ve put together a cheerful lineup of ideas to help you plan the perfect summer Saturday. Mix and match your favorites to build your ideal day, or make it a little more spontaneous by rolling a six-sided die for each section and letting fate shape your itinerary.

The best way to kick off a summer Saturday? Get your body moving! Whether you’re easing into the day or chasing an endorphin rush, a little morning movement is the perfect way to boost your mood and set the tone. Choose one of the options below, or mix it up week to week, and feel that bounce in your step all morning long.

1. YOGA

Start your day with a peaceful (and possibly sweaty) flow, either from the comfort of home or at one of our local studios. Check out The Elevate Company, Copas Crew, or Benicia Community Health and Fitness Club for community classes that welcome all levels.

2. OUTDOOR WALK

Grab your binoculars and go birdwatching at Benicia State Park, take your pup for a stroll along the waterfront, or tune into a favorite podcast while you loop the neighborhood. It’s simple, refreshing, and a great way to connect with your surroundings.

3. CYCLING

Whether you're coasting through town or tackling the hills, Benicia offers routes for every skill level. Need inspiration? The friendly folks at Wheels in Motion are full of recommendations, or just hop on and see where the road takes you.

4. SWIMMING

Cool off and wake up with a few laps at the James Lemos Swim Center. Summer weekend lap swim hours run from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., making it an ideal early activity before the heat sets in.

5. RUNNING

Beat the heat with an early run, solo, with a friend, or inspired by the Benicia Run Club. While they officially meet on Fridays, their friendly energy and community spirit might just carry you through a Saturday route of your own.

6. JAZZERCISE

If dance cardio is more your vibe, start your morning with high-energy movement at Benicia Jazzercise. This local favorite has been going strong for years and even offers free babysitting during select classes, so you can move and groove worry-free.

Now that you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s time for the most important meal of the day. Whether you're in the mood for something quick and casual or a full sit-down brunch, Benicia has a breakfast spot to satisfy every craving.

1. BENICIA GRILL

Opening bright and early, Benicia Grill is a go-to for classic, satisfying breakfast fare. The portions are generous, the coffee’s always hot, and honestly, there’s no wrong choice on the menu. Order your favorites, or just go all in.

2. ONE HOUSE BAKERY

With top-notch coffee, dreamy pastries, and a breakfast sandwich you’ll be thinking about long after summer ends, One House Bakery hits the sweet (and savory) spot. Grab a seat there or take your treats down to the waterfront for breakfast with a view.

3. DRIFT BENICIA

A laid-back gem in the heart of town, Drift serves up fresh coffee, tasty avocado toast, and good vibes on their sunny patio. More than just a café, it’s a community hub. Don't be surprised if you leave with a full belly and a new friend.

4. THE CAFÉ AT THE INN

A cappuccino and flaky pastry (or a few, we won’t judge) are perfect companions for a quiet catch-up or a casual business chat. Cozy up indoors in one of the elegant nooks or enjoy the garden patio, surrounded by buzzing bees and blooming flowers.

5. SAILOR JACK’S

Brunch with a view? Yes, please. Sailor Jack’s never disappoints, whether you’re there for a family feast or a lazy morning with friends. Don’t skip the biscuits and jam, or a mimosa if you're feeling festive.

6. HUCKLEBERRY’S

“Southern cookin’ with a California twist!” Huckleberry’s offers a massive menu full of comfort food favorites. There’s something for everyone, from classic pancakes to Cajunspiced surprises.

2. PICNIC ON THE GREEN

The First Street Green is a favorite picnic spot year-round, but summer is especially ideal for spreading out a blanket and enjoying a leisurely lunch while watching clouds, boats, and birds drift along the Strait. You might even catch sight of a kite surfer out on the water. For an extra-special touch, Dianna’s Bakery offers customizable picnic baskets you can pick up on your way, just be sure to place your order at least 48 hours in advance!

3. BENICIA WATERFRONT ROCKS

Happening only the weekend of July 26, this annual event is a can’t-miss celebration of music, food, beer, wine, and dancing by the water. For the full rundown, check out the detailed article in this issue.

4. SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK

On Saturday, August 2 at 4 p.m., head to the Marina Pavilion Green for a free outdoor performance of As You Like It by Vallejo Shakespeare in the Park. Bring a blanket or a low-back chair, and settle in for an afternoon of classic theater under the sky.

5. GALLERY STROLLS ON FIRST STREET

Benicia’s thriving art scene makes for a perfect summer stroll. Start at the Marilyn Citron O’Rourke Art Gallery inside the Public Library (where you can view work by our photographer, Michael Van Auken and the talented Peg Jackson,) then make your way down First Street, stopping at NY2CA, Gallery 621, Benicia Plein Air Gallery (where you can see work by Jean Purnell, the author of our monthly Art and Artists article, and the subject of her July piece, Maria Santostefano) and other local spots showcasing incredible local talent.

6. MUSEUM OF HISTORY, BENICIA

Step back in time and explore Benicia’s rich past across multiple historic buildings and beautifully curated exhibits. Even better, admission is now free for all, making it easier than ever to connect with the city’s roots.

Benicia’s nightlife has been picking up in recent years, and summer is the perfect time to enjoy it. Whether you're winding down with a cozy dinner or keeping the energy up with live music and late-night bites, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite after-dark spots to help you end your summer Saturday on a high note.

1. BAXTERS

Elegant, inviting, and still one of Benicia’s newest gems, Baxters offers expertly crafted cocktails, a creative menu, and a beautiful setting for a summer evening out. Opened in the summer of 2023, it’s quickly become a local favorite, and if you haven’t been yet, now’s the time.

2. LIVE MUSIC

A longtime go-to for live music and craft cocktails, The Rellik delivers a classic Benicia night out. Live music typically starts at 5 p.m. with a second performance at 8:30 p.m., perfect for those who like their evenings with a soundtrack. Lucca’s is another local favorite with live music that starts in the afternoon and goes into the evening. The garden fills up fast, so secure your spot early!

3. PIZZA PARTY

Sometimes, all you need is a good slice. Whether you’re grabbing takeout to eat on the waterfront or gathering friends for a casual night in, you can’t go wrong with local favorites like Pacifica Pizza, Pizza Pirate, or Napoli’s.

4. CULLEN’S

Quirky, cozy, and full of character, Cullen’s is a must-visit, especially if you’ve got out-of-town guests. Pair a whiskey tasting with a hot dog from Char’s, and snag a seat outside to catch a stunning sunset over the Strait.

5. BOTTOM OF THE FIFTH

If you’re in the mood for a laid-back vibe and a few rounds of pool, Bottom of the Fifth is your spot. With cold drinks, hearty pub food, and billiards tables, it’s a great place to hang out with friends after a full day of exploring.

6. THE CHILL

Unwinding with a glass of wine never looked, or felt, so good. The Chill is a cozy, community-focused wine and beer bar that always feels like home. While it fits right into your evening plans, don’t overlook their daytime events, like weekend bingo at 2 p.m., with proceeds benefiting a rotating lineup of worthy local organizations.

We could go on forever, there are so many incredible spots we didn’t even get to, including the amazing local shops, mouth-watering bakeries, and well-maintained parks tucked all over town. But some things are best discovered by chance, and stumbling upon your own hidden gem? That’s part of the magic. Soak up the sun, try something new, and don’t be afraid to hit the dance floor. We’ll see you out there this summer. B

n Benicia Magazine Staff

Benicia knows how to celebrate the Fourth of July, with heart, history, and community spirit. Our town’s beloved Independence Day festivities span two magical days, blending modern fun with deep-rooted tradition. From the iconic Torchlight Parade to the breathtaking fireworks over the strait, there’s no better place to honor America’s birthday than right here in our historic waterfront town.

Torchlight Parade – July 3 at 6:30 PM

Benicia’s streets come alive on the evening of July 3 as locals and visitors alike line First Street for one of the most cherished events of the year: the Torchlight Parade. With more than 50 entries, including marching bands, clubs, community groups, and local businesses, this hometown celebration is as lively as it is heartfelt. The parade travels from B Street to Military Street, and sidewalk space is first come, first served, so bring your chairs and claim your spot early.

This year, we’re proud to honor Mike Caplin as Grand Marshal. A longtime Benicia resident and dedicated community advocate, Mike has contributed greatly to local life and embodies the generous, civic-minded spirit that makes this town so special.

What makes the Torchlight Parade even more meaningful is its deep historical roots. The tradition dates all the way back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, when the town’s volunteer fire department organized the event. In those early days, long

before streetlights, the parade would begin after sunset, lit only by handheld torches carried through the streets. The glow of those flames gave the parade its name, and while electric lights have since taken over, the spirit of that original torchlit procession still burns bright today.

Historic photos and artifacts from early parades can be found at the Museum of History Benicia, a reminder that this small city has always had a big sense of celebration. Even the outfits have changed, from ankle-length dresses and three-piece suits to shorts and tank tops, but the joy, the community, and the pride remain the same.

Fireworks on the Bay – July 4 at

9:30 PM

The celebration continues the next evening with a dazzling fireworks display over the Carquinez Strait. Presented by Benicia Main Street, the show begins at 9:30 PM on July 4, and the First Street Green offers the best views. Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, and don’t forget a jacket, waterfront nights can cool down quickly. Watching the bursts of color reflect off the water is a magical way to close out the holiday.

Benicia has celebrated American independence for nearly as long as the country has existed. From historic parades to community gatherings, this town’s deep appreciation for tradition, civic pride, and togetherness shines through every event. This year's festivities continue that legacy, honoring the past while bringing joy to the present.

Whether you’re cheering on the parade, waving at the grand marshal, or watching fireworks light up the sky, there’s no place quite like Benicia on the Fourth of July. B

“I suppose I could have always asked my father what his cryptic scribblings meant, but somehow it seemed more fun, or at least more exciting, to try to decipher them myself, to think of them as a kind of puzzle or game I had to unravel.”

There’s something about the lazy hush of summer that sends me drifting toward the mystery aisle of every bookstore I pass. My mind starts to crave riddles. Not just blood-stained puzzles, but quiet ones. Stories with secrets that linger just out of reach.

This season, instead of reaching for the usual suspects, your Christies and Flynns, I found myself drawn to a quieter, more elusive mystery: The Imagined Life by Andrew Porter.

At first glance, it’s not a mystery in the traditional sense. There’s no murder weapon, no ticking clock. But make no mistake, Porter’s novel is as tense and propulsive as the bloodiest thrillers. Only here, the stakes are emotional, existential. The investigation is inward.

At the center is Steven Mills, a young father quietly unraveling. His wife and son are suddenly gone, having left without a note or a plan. As he tries to make sense of their silence, another, older silence begins to press on him: the disappearance of his own father, a charismatic and brilliant professor who

vanished in 1984, when Steven was just twelve. No explanation. No goodbye.

That old mystery becomes the one Steven can no longer ignore. He sets out on a road trip up the California coast, from San Diego to the Bay Area, visiting the people who once orbited his father’s world: former friends, family, colleagues. Each stop offers another halfremembered glimpse into the summer leading up to his father’s disappearance.

Porter masterfully weaves these present-day interviews with vivid recollections from Steven’s childhood, scenes thick with tension, wonder, and the kind of unanswered questions that lodge deep in a young person’s psyche. As Steven combs through dusty bookshelves, cryptic notes, and half-truths, the novel becomes not just a story of loss, but a meditation on legacy, identity, and the strange fictions we build around the people we love.

In The Imagined Life, the mystery isn’t about solving a crime, it’s about confronting the stories we tell ourselves. It’s about chasing ghosts, deciphering scribbled margins, and accepting that some endings don’t come with neat resolutions.

Reading this book felt like being let in on a secret. It was a thrill to investigate this troubled professor’s unraveling alongside his son, and for Bay Area locals, spotting familiar places threaded through the narrative offers its own quiet thrill.

If you loved Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar, one of last year’s Booktails picks, you’ll find The Imagined Life a similar experience. It’s a little shorter, a little less surreal, but just as emotionally resonant.

For the full experience, pair it with a chilled Limoncello Spritz and your favorite Fleetwood Mac record. Grab your copy at Bookshop Benicia, and swing by SIPs on the way home for the

ingredients to make your drink of choice. Some mysteries are best unraveled slowly, glass in hand, music humming in the background.

Harmonic Visions Opening Reception

Marilyn Citron O'Rourke Art Gallery 3-5pm

Harmonic Visions, on display from July 9 to August 14 with the opening on Sunday July 13 from 3 to 5pm, includes work from artist and photographers, Michael Van Auken and Peg Jackson.

Together, Michael and Peg created Harmonic Visions, a fusion of photography and digital collage inspired by their travels in Switzerland and Italy last year.

The impetus for their journey was a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony/Ode to Joy with the Golden Gate Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Peg is a member of the chorus, and Michael went along in his official capacity as photographer to document the weeks of rehearsing and performing in Scuol, an enchanting village in the Swiss Alps.

After saying their goodbyes in Switzerland, Michael and Peg continued their travels to Italy, where they visited Lake Como, Venice, and Florence. Their experience was total immersion in stunning landscapes, historical sites and artistic masterpieces. Every location provided ample opportunity to capture amazing photographic images. But as artists, Peg and Michael sought to capture a sense of the blending of time and place.

Each artwork includes elements of the past, the present, and a possible future. The opening reception includes live music, slideshow presentation, snacks and beverages.
