I was going to write about some of the articles in this issue, Romantic Benicia, Black History Month, John Madden and others. Instead, I want to talk with you about the businesses in Benicia that are really struggling. I know everyone is extremely tired of hearing about the economic effects of covid, but the hard truth is that the economic effects are as dire as they have ever been.

For almost two years, Benicia retail, restaurants, health and fitness businesses, personal service businesses like nail salons, skin care, and hair salons, have borne the brunt of the inconsistencies of masking, social distancing, outdoor only edicts, etc. They have downsized, built outdoor parklets, rebranded, created outdoor exercise programs, and have invented many other ways to stay in business. And this year, to make matters worse, let’s throw in staff shortage, materials and product shortage, along with inconsistent and late deliveries.

January through March are traditionally slow for retail and most other consumer businesses, the only exception being gyms and self-improvement brought on by new year resolutions; not this year though. Gyms are closed or are open with very few clients. The bottom line is that we must help them stay in business. I know that you spent a lot of money over the holidays and that you may be on a post-holiday budget. Go out, go shopping, order in, order online. This is how we will keep our businesses going. Hope to see you out there!

My name is Genevieve and I am the new editor in chief of Benicia Magazine. I have been working behind the scenes of the magazine for the last few years and have enjoyed supporting my mom, Mary, during her time as editor. I’m excited to now take up the position as my own and continue providing the quality content you’ve come to expect from Benicia Magazine.

I’m a Benicia native and my primary, middle and high school education is 100% Benicia.

As it is Black History Month, I’d like to share a story about my Black History education. I went to elementary school at Robert Semple, where I was in a class with a member of the Wright family. I recall his mother, Linda Wright, making a point to supplement our Black History education by coming into the classroom with art projects and many stories to convey, not just important historical facts and figures, but a sense of cultural pride. I remember her sharing about how her family celebrated Kwanzaa, reading us stories of Anansi the Trickster Spider, and so much more. Her involvement in our education was impactful and deepened our connection with the material.

As it happens, Linda Wright is a professional storyteller and is still involved in the Benicia Unified School District. I would like to give thanks to her and other such storytellers who help us connect through culture, and whose work is often undervalued.

A few years back in my marketing career, I purchased media for different accounts. I bought ad spots from KCBS and had a long relationship with them.

One of the perks was that I was invited to many events. Two of my favorites were the Annual John Madden Barbecue and the John Madden Bocce Ball Tournament.

Why? Because of John Madden. I’m not particularly knowledgeable about football but I listened to the “Daily Madden” religiously because of the way John did sports. Like Yogi Berra before him, Madden had a knack for nonsensical phrases that arrived with an air of great wisdom.

For example: “Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field.

They’re bigger than everybody else, and that’s what makes them the biggest guys on the field.”

“He was standing in the hole waiting for something to develop …. and WHAP! He got developed.”

“Don’t worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon.”

And about training for the Bocce Ball tournament: “Concentration and visualization,” John Madden told the KCBS morning crew.

“Just visualize success… You don’t want to visualize anything bad, so you take all bad things out and you don’t visualize them.”

Steve Mariucci prepares differently to play on his team. “I went over to courtside and worked on my abs a little bit,” the former 49er and Cal coach said. “And then last night was a little carbohydrating with spaghetti.”

The BBQ was held annually in Pleasanton at the Madden sports media compound. He prepared for each BBQ for months, from growing the pig, to details on what sauce belonged with which meat. I never saw so much meat in my life. The whole roasted pig, roasted goat, barbecued chicken, sausages, marinated cross rib, beef, lamb, tri-tip, and the much-talked-about-turducken. 1,500lbs of meat, no this is not a typo. I soon found out that this was the appetizer portion of the event.

After about an hour of every variety of barbecue imaginable, the doors opened and we were ushered into a white table cloth luncheon. I was astonished; how could anyone eat another bite? During the luncheon, anyone could go up and talk to John. He was a giant man, he was 6’4” and when he was coaching he weighed in at about 250lbs, he was the

gentlest of giants. Self-deprecating and kind, he took time to chat to anyone who approached him. I was representing Smuin Ballet at the time, and we talked about how ballet is used by professional athletes. He always remembered me after that and made sure I was invited to other events including one memorable Super Bowl at his studio where we watched the game on a movie theater sized screen surrounded by 8 other screens. Only about 10 people were there; we won’t forget that, ever!

"He was the greatest broadcaster, bar none, that the NFL has ever had," my friend and avid ballet fan, retired KCBS Radio sports anchor Steve Bitker said. "He brought so many people into the NFL as fans that otherwise wouldn't have been there. And since he retired, so many tried to copy him, even when he was still working, and nobody ever really came close. He was one of a kind."

Benicia History

Recognizing Benicia’s First Black Elected Officials Andre Stewart, M.B.A. and Dr. Gethsemane Moss, Ed.D. n Dr. Gethsemane Moss, Ed.D. The late Dr. Carter G. Woodson (18751950) was instrumental in ensuring that the accomplishments of African Americans were made public and celebrated. Dr. Woodson published stories about the achievements of African Americans because of the omission of African American history in textbooks. As a cofounder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, he later named the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. Dr. Woodson made it his mission to document the contributions and accomplishments of African American people. Woodson chose February because the month celebrates the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, February 14th, and Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, February 12th, both instrumental in making decisions that changed the trajectory of the lives of African American people. President Gerald Ford decreed Black History Month a national observance in 1976.

Ralph Ellison’s book, Invisible Man, and the writings of author and activist James Baldwin were two of many that were instrumental in developing social awareness of the African American experience. Some scholars cite the intentional omission of African American history as an effort to erase, dehumanize and desensitize the truth about the African American experience.

Many “firsts” have stepped into the light, not necessarily to change history but in the hope of leaving this world a better place. Going first can be met with significant opposition, but that should not be a reason not to take a step forward to create change.

The city of Benicia acknowledges Black History Month and has made efforts over the years. In 2021, Mayor Young and council members attended and presented a Proclamation and raised the Juneteenth flag at city hall recognizing Juneteenth (19) Freedom Day, designating this day an annual event for the city of Benicia.

The ending of slavery and the reconstruction era presented other challenges for the formerly enslaved, such as Jim Crow Laws. The residue of Jim Crow has infected our systems and presented challenges to gain economic freedom and sustainability because of the state and local statutes that legalized racial segregation.

In 2006, Andre Stewart, M.B.A., was the first Black American man to be appointed and elected to public office in Benicia, California. In 2019 Dr. Gethsemane Moss, Ed.D., was the second Black American and the first Black American woman to be appointed and later elected in 2020 into public office in Benicia, California.

Both Stewart and Moss made history by becoming the first Black man and Black

woman to serve on the Benicia Unified School District Board. Stewart and Moss were also the first Black Americans in Benicia to be appointed to office before later being elected into their school board trustee positions.

Stewart and Moss have students who attended and graduated from Benicia Schools and were then driven to become a part of the school board to make a difference and contribute their areas of expertise. Stewart stated, “We transferred our kids to Mills school because of the diversity of economics, and once the school closed, I served on a committee to help determine what needed to be done with the property after the closure.” Stewart went on to state, “I felt I could help with bringing a corporate mindset and financial sustainability to our school district.” Stewart also had goals of helping the district create more vocational options for students. Stewart shared that when he became a part of the board, the school district faced many budget challenges, program cuts, and layoffs. Stewart holds a Bachelor of Science degree in finance, with minors in economics and sociology, and an M.B.A. with an emphasis in finance.

Stewart’s advice to anyone wanting to become politically engaged in the community is to remain focused on what is right. Stewart stated, “Do it and be transparent, stay above board.” Stewart

went on to say, “It’s not about medals and pictures; it’s about doing the things that are going to benefit the people down the road and stopping bad things from happening.” Stewart shared his thoughts about what we can do as a community to better engage our youth. “We need to give our youth a chance to explore their interests and hobbies and make our schools more exciting. We must give our youth a voice and listen to them, and also have them be responsible and accountable because there is no respect without accountability and engagement; they go hand in hand.”

While Stewart may not consider running for any future office, he is still actively involved in the Benicia community. Mayor Young and members of City Council unanimously appointed Stewart to serve on a standing City Council subcommittee, CURE (Committee United for Racial Equity). Stewart also serves as a patient family advocate with Sutter Hospital, serves on the Human Services Board for the city of Benicia, serves as a member of the bond oversight committee for Solano Community College, and is an executive for a Silicon Valley startup company.

Moss was inspired to run for office, having served as a classroom teacher, school site administrator, and senior director at the county office of education level. Moss stated, “Serving on the school board was a natural transition for me given my years of experience in the system.” Moss went on to state, “I felt like my expertise would contribute to positive experiences for students and families.”

Moss’s two children graduated from Benicia High School.

Moss also served for eight years on the Benicia Arts and Culture Commission. Moss shared her ideas that were a part of her initial desire to serve, stating, “I believe that students should be able to graduate from school with a plan; all students.” Moss went on to state, “Life after graduation should not be a mystery for students. Every student deserves to have a plan upon graduation, whether to start a business, learn a trade, go to college, go into the military, etc.”

When asked about being the first African American appointed and elected to office in Benicia, Moss and Stewart were surprised. Stewart stated, “I wasn’t aware until people kept saying it. “It shocked me,” stated Stewart. Moss recalls running for office and only having one encounter that caused her to pay closer attention to the dynamics. Moss stated, “I remember having a conversation with someone representing an entity in Benicia who asked me why I was running for office in Benicia and not Vallejo.” While Moss stated, she wasn’t sure why this person would ask such a question. Still, she says she politely reminded this individual that she has been a Benicia resident for several years and owns Benicia property. “I live here, so why would I run for office in Vallejo when I live in Benicia?” questioned Moss.

Moss is open to seeking other opportunities in public office but is committed to serving as a school board trustee at this time. Moss also works as a Field Representative for Senator Bill Dodd, works part-time as a personal assistant to musician Juan Escovedo and serves as an adjunct professor. Moss is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Black Women Organized for Political Action (BWOPA), and other domestic and international public service organizations. Moss holds a Bachelor of Arts from Howard University, a Masters of Education from Chapman University, and a Doctorate of Education from Grand Canyon University and received her teaching credential from Dominican University.

This month is obviously the month of “LOVE.” The aisles of Target are filled with pink and red. Our eyes are assaulted by cheap heart-shaped boxes of chocolate (which are actually far from cheap) and, of course, the large stuffed animals that would frankly be a red flag for any adult woman. Ignore all that.

I’ve come up with something so much better!

I’ve made two versions of my Valentine to you all.

Both Valentine recipes work for both perspectives of Valentine's Day.

Blood of Tinder

Swipe right on this juicy beverage, without the heartbreak and only a possible headache.

Perfect balance of smoothness with the angsty bite of blood orange.

If you’d like to add a little more angst or passion to this cocktail, add chili flakes or other spice to the rim of the glass.

If you’re not a gin fan, replace it with bourbon for a warm smooth finish to calm the nerves.

1oz fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon Grand Marnier 1oz simple syrup 2oz purple gin (Empress Gin) Ice lots 1oz fresh blood orange juice 1 egg white In your choice of glass, pour the Grand Marnier and swirl to coat the glass. Inside your cocktail shaker, place ice ¾ to the brim. Add lemon juice, simple syrup, gin and egg white. Shake vigorously for 1 minute. Strain into your choice of glassware, a wine glass will do.

Slowly add blood orange juice to the glass (pour to the side). Garnish with an orange slice.

1oz fresh lemon juice 1oz simple syrup 2oz purple gin (Empress Gin) Ice lots 1oz fresh pomegranate juice (I used POM, nobody has time for that) 1 egg white Inside your cocktail shaker, place ice ¾ to the brim. Add lemon juice, simple syrup, gin and egg white. Shake vigorously for 1 minute. Strain into your choice of glassware, a wine glass will do. Slowly add pomegranate juice to the glass (pour to the side).

Love Story for the Ages

n Kevin Nelson In every time of year, but especially on Valentine’s Day and in the warming days of spring, young people in love can be seen on First Street. Holding hands, stealing kisses, sharing heartfelt embraces.

They may not know that this little city played a role in one of the greatest love stories of all time.

Every good story, certainly every good love story, could begin with the phrase: “Once upon a time.” So be it. This truly true love story will begin that way too.

Once upon a time, there was a young woman named Concha.

Some said she was the most beautiful woman in California.

Though only sixteen, when she entered a room every eye followed her, noting her delicate beauty. One admirer marveled at “her vivacity and cheerfulness, her love-inspiring and brilliant eyes, and for a thousand other charms.”

A girl of such rare gifts must have a glittering ball to meet the handsome prince of her dreams, and so it happened with Maria de la Concepción Marcela Argüello. At an elegant dinner party hosted by her mother and father in the Presidio of San Francisco, the eyes of Nikolai Petrovich Rezanov fell upon her, instantly captivated. It was love at first sight. How could it not be?

The Russian nobleman was a widower whose wife had died a few years before. Gloomy and still in mourning, he had set out on an expedition in service to the Czar, with whom he was a trusted advisor. After a long and punishing voyage, he and his men had found a welcome harbor in the fogbound shores of Yerba Buena. Dashing and impossibly handsome, arrayed in his full dress Navy uniform, he approached the young girl for a dance. So carefree and full of life, Concha “pierced his inmost soul,”

according to a friend, and his sadness melted away.

That evening, and in the days that followed, their two hearts became one. They walked together on the Presidio grounds and picnicked on Angel Island. He opened up about his late wife and told stories about his travels around the world. Although he was fluent in Russian and French and her native tongue was Spanish— translators helped them get their words across—Concha and Nikolai were communicating on a different level, the language of love. Within weeks, the head-over-heels suitor asked the fair young maiden for her hand in marriage.

Joyously, Concha said yes, and the two lived happily ever after.

Nah, that’s not what happened.

This isn’t a fairy tale; it’s a real-life story, one that over the centuries has inspired poems, a novel, many books, a mural in a Presidio chapel, a chamber musical and a Russian rock opera, “Juno and Avios,” that is said to be that country’s “Jesus Christ Superstar.”

In truth, shock and alarm greeted the Russian’s proposal. She was a mere girl, he was a middleaged man. They were of different nationalities, different heritages, different faiths. She was Roman Catholic, he was Russian Orthodox.

Their union would be acceptable, said Concha’s parents and the friars of Mission Dolores, only if it were blessed by the Pope and approved

by Czar Alexander of Russia. The star-crossed lovers had no choice but to submit.

On the day his ship left port, Concha gave the man of her dreams a locket with strands of her hair inside. His gift to her was a chain with a jeweled cross. They never saw each other again.

On his return voyage to Russia Rezanov fell desperately ill with

neumonia. Then, in a weakened physical state while making the dangerous land crossing over the wastes of Siberia, he fell off his horse and died from his injuries. Meanwhile Concha waited, and waited, and waited, now tortured by doubt. What happened to him? Had he forgotten her? Was it all a hoax? Presidio gossips whispered that Rezanov had courted her only for political reasons—to wed the daughter of a wealthy governor of Alta California and thus form an alliance between Spain and Russia. Concha would not, could not, believe these painful rumors.

It was years before she found out the truth. An officer who served with Rezanov and who was at his bedside at the time of his death sailed to California to break the terrible news, adding, “His last words were of you.” The officer returned her gift of the locket. Inside were not merely strands of hair, but her heart.

Concha’s sisters and family urged her to date other men, to move on with her life. Those love-inspiring eyes attracted many suitors, to be sure. But that was not the path Concha followed. She surrendered herself to a life of chastity and devoted service in the Name of her Lord and at age 60 became a nun, the first native-born Californian to enter the Dominican order. When the convent school in Monterey where she served moved to Benicia, Sister Mary Dominica Argüello moved with it and came to live here.

The school was renamed Saint Catherine’s Academy, and this was where “La Beata Dominica”—so beloved was she that people called her The Little Dancing Saint—served until her death. She died December 23, 1857 and is buried in St. Dominic’s Cemetery on Hillcrest Avenue; her grave is in the second row to the left as you enter the gates. There is a special tribute to her, inscribed with a poem, next to her gravestone.

What’s new at the

BENICIA HISTORICAL MUSEUM The Benicia Historical Museum, better known by old timers as the Camel Barn Museum, is full of excitement these days. The museum’s new executive director Jen Roger and it’s hard working board of directors have new events planned for 2022, the first of which are coming up this month.

First Fridays at The Museum is a new monthly event that takes place after dark on the first Friday of the month at the museum and includes live music curated from some of the best Bay Area bands, musicians, and soloists covering a wide range of genres. There are Food trucks, a no-host bar, and the Museum is completely open during the event. What a great way to spend a Friday evening, whether it’s a family night out or a date night, First Fridays At The Museum is sure to please.

Through his work, he transforms industrial structures into spaces of wonder and play. He has won a number of coveted awards such as the Landscape Architecture Award for Excellence for public art, the Colorado Lottery Sunburst award, and the award for innovation from the American Concrete Institute. His work is informed by the themes and myths from Hellenistic culture.

The Benicia Historical Museum will feature other local artists as this gallery-style experience moves forward. Art Camel is included with regularly priced museum admission Tuesday-Sunday, 1-4pm.

The purpose for these new events and all the events at the Museum, is to engage the public and reawaken interest in the Museum.

Restoring the Frisbie-Walsh House n Reed Robbins On May 3, 1989 I first saw the FrisbieWalsh House while on an important business trip to Benicia, CA. My first thought was “this is my house.” Even as I gingerly walked around the neglected grounds, with old abandoned cars and piles of garbage and trash, I believed the house was a treasure, and I mentally jumped from corporate architecture in San Francisco to historic preservationist.

The challenges ahead

However, the amazing charm of the house with its incredible detail of drip bargeboard molding, pinnacle and pendant at eaves, roof pitch, scale and balance, resonated with me, and the importance of my trip was quickly dismissed.

I visualized embracing the entire process of scraping, patching, painting and restoring the interior to the grand design I felt it must have had within the past fellow architect’s original vision.

Purchasing & city issues

After gathering as much information as I could that day, I returned the following weekend for further investigation. I found the elusive owner and made an offer on Monday morning. The actual closing took many months, as the owner insisted on a property lot split, which required Planning Commission approval. By then I had learned about much of the house’s history, including the past owners, Captain John B. Frisbie and Captain Walsh. There was no thought of not 18 • Benicia Magazine

creating my own vision for this century’s update and use of this amazing example of East coast architecture, significant in California’s development history.

My vision

As I threw myself into this massive undertaking, I was often asked, where does one start? It seemed that since the town had looked at the sad wreck for so many decades, the exterior was a good place to begin. A large amount of donated paint was used, as well as a substantial amount of caulk.

Balancing the options

A new foundation was not an option, as the chimneys would collapse and cause the house to fall down. So the chimneys were taken apart, and then repointed with an elastomeric epoxy type mortar to better adhere to the original brick. All the windows were taken apart, reglazed, patched, and had new guides added.

We also found ‘slumped glass’ to replace the broken panes and match the patina of age.

Army of friends

So with a small army of friends, three airless paint sprayers and hundreds of gallons of paint, the overall building was completely painted with three coats. However, it was not a color to my satisfaction, so it was painted again a short while later. I began research immediately to see if I could find any grants or funds for significant historical properties and found there was only one

financial incentive: the Mills Tax Credit.

This bill had been pushed through the state to restore the Hotel Del Coronado

by Senator Mills in the 1970s; it reduced property taxes significantly if one qualified. After endless inquiries to the California Preservation Foundation, I finally convinced the economic development person for the City of Benicia that this bill could assist historic property owners to restore their buildings. After two years, I was finally able to secure this valuable tax credit.

I believed the house was a treasure, and I mentally jumped from corporate architecture in San Francisco to historic preservationist.

Opening as the “Captain Walsh House Bed & Breakfast Inn”

Due to construction costs, the idea of turning the house into a business began to evolve and necessitated a ‘business loan.’ The original design was my own, but with the public’s expectation in mind, I tried to be a bit more traditional.

The Inn’s room names were as quirky as the designs; The Epifania Room was a showcase for the First Lady (Epifania

“Fannie” Vallejo Frisbie) that resided there. The Harvest was a play on the previous owner’s name, Harvey B. The Library contained secret passages, a hidden staircase and a Murphy bed.

The Inn was featured on the cover of Better Homes & Gardens, The American Encyclopedia of B&B’s, Frommer’s Travel, many articles and three episodes on HGTV and was very well-received.

The Frisbie-Walsh House is at 235 East L Street in Benicia, CA. This Gothic Revival style cottage was built shortly before 1850; it is a prefabricated house (the timbers cut, numbered, hauled to Benicia and assembled at the site). Gen. M.G. Vallejo commissioned New England architect Andrew Jackson Downing to design three similar houses, one for himself, one as a wedding gift for his daughter Epifania (Fannie) and son-in-law John B. Frisbie (the Frisbie-Walsh house), and one originally owned by Captain Schillibar (it was destroyed in the great 1906 San Francisco earthquake).Vallejo’s house, named “Lachryma Montis,” is now a museum in nearby Sonoma, CA. John B. and Fannie only lived in their house for two years.

They sold it to Capt. Walsh who lived there until the 1880s.

Angel Heart 4 You An island of serenity, spirituality and mysticism n Genevieve Hand “There’s no such thing as coincidence,” says Carol Mayer. It is this belief that has largely shaped her life and facilitated her ownership of Angel Heart 4 You, the spiritual/metaphysical shop that, since its opening in 2009, has become a fixture of our downtown landscape.

Raised in a religious household, Carol was always drawn to the spiritual, though she took a different path than her Catholic nun aunts.

“I always had an affinity for meditation and for helping people,” she says. She knew she one day wanted to leave her occupation as an accountant and open Angel Heart 4 You – a place where people could go “to expand their mind and spirit,” and help them understand “there is more to this life than what you see.”

So, Carol began saving her tax returns each year, buying up inventory to one day sell in her dream shop.

Then, on one fateful Match.com date, Carol came to Benicia for the first time. She says she felt compelled to walk First Street that day, and was drawn to Faery Tale, the shop that used to occupy the building where Angel Heart currently resides. Carol recalls telling the owners how much she loved the store and her dream to one day open one like it. Then, “one day” came. The owners of Faery Tale called her up and offered her the store. And the rest is history.

Angel Heart 4 You offers spiritual items such as crystals, reiki-charged candles, and sage, along with their iconic angel figurines and much more. Some may know Angel Heart for their offerings of psychic readings and classes, such as numerology and astrology, designed to raise consciousness. “Our psychic reading fairs are unbelievably popular,” says Carol. These fairs offer 15-minute readings for $20 and are almost always booked up. This year, Angel Heart plans to offer the fairs every other month.

Individual appointments, which are currently by phone only due to the pandemic, can also be scheduled with a psychic or psychic medium on staff. “In order to be a reader at Angel Heart, you have to have a lot of integrity,” says Carol of the store’s strict vetting process.

A selfdescribed empath, Carol says she can feel what others are going through. Perhaps it is this ability which causes her to care so deeply about giving to charity. If you’ve ever visited the store, you may be familiar with the angel fountain placed in a corner of the shop. Carol donates any coins dropped into the fountain to charity several times throughout the year. She also takes care to order inventory from vendors she knows also give to charity.

The shop also features an intention tree; a decorative tree with pen and paper nearby with which visitors can write an intention, prayer, or wish. On the full moon each month, the intentions are burned to bid them come true. As Carol reports, many people have had their wishes come true through this process.

Carol originally opened Angel Heart 4 You with Peg Kelly and Lia Valenzuela. Since Peg’s passing in 2014, Carol runs the store and Lia handles all class programming. If you are interested in taking a class or scheduling a reading, bookings can be made online at angelheart4you.net, by phone, or by simply dropping into the store. Several of the introductory classes are offered free of charge.

“I’ve learned to always listen. Sit in quietness and meditate; there are always messages,” says Carol. It is to this mindset she attributes her position in life and in business. If a reader drops off her staff, another seems to find their way to Angel Heart in short order. “I think the angels just fly them in here,” Carol says of this and other serendipitous phenomena which never leave her wanting. Beyond these seemingly guardian angels, Carol gives a heartfelt thanks to her loyal customers, without whom the store could not survive. “We have the nicest customers in the world,” she says

We have been hibernating for almost two years, so with proper precautions, it’s time to wake up and get outdoors. February is a wonderful time to visit the mountains, the snowfall has been epic and the post-holiday roads are less congested.

The moment you see that first patch of snow that grows and spreads the further you drive up the mountain, all the stresses from daily life seem to disappear. Arriving and taking that first deep breath of fresh pine air, you begin to feel that ultimate sense of calm, a feeling of peace, and the pure beauty of the Sierra.

Perfect for families, winter sports enthusiasts and those who just want to get away from it all, here are four Sierra mountain towns that have it all.

SONORA Sonora gives you the opportunity to play in the snow while getting a bit of culture. Stroll down historic Washington Street for a glimpse of the past. Shops, restaurants, and inns are tucked inside well-kept 19th and 20th century buildings, filled with hours of exploration and entertainment. Winter in Yosemite is magical and breathtaking. It seems that spending time in this magnificent national park is beneficial to body and mind, making a winter trip to Yosemite well worth it.

Snow play: Enjoy the oldest ski resort in California! Often touted as one of the most family-friendly ski areas, Badger Pass Ski Area offers downhill skiing, snowboarding, crosscountry skiing, tubing and more. If hitting the slopes isn't for you, take a snowshoe hike through Mariposa Grove, go cross country skiing on Glacier Point Road or even just take a brisk hike through lower elevation Yosemite Valley.

TRUCKEE When you imagine a winter getaway in California High Sierra, one of the first places that comes to mind is the town of Truckee. As the snow falls, the quaint Historic Downtown becomes magical.

There are plenty of shops to stroll through, cozy eateries for a warming cup of soup, or if you crave fine dining, there’s Trokay, Cottonwood, Stella and more. There are beautiful bars to sip on a hot toddy, and coffee shops for a seasonal latte.

We step back in time to March 31, 1964, when the official military flag was retired at the Benicia Arsenal. Built in 1849 on 300 acres east of downtown, the Arsenal began service as an armory for the United States Military so that it could maintain peace and order in frontier California. Later, the base was used to maintain equipment, test ordinance, and it even served as a stockyard where camels – of the infamous Camel Barn – were auctioned on the cheap after failing desert field testing of their war capabilities. The withdrawal that March day signaled the decommissioning of the Arsenal.

The base closure brought fear in Benicia, as a majority of the 2,400 people employed were local residents. And that is when the City stepped

in. On January 6, 1963, after acquiring title to the property from the US government, City officials signed a master lease with Benicia Industries to create the Benicia Industrial Park. Amongst the first major employers to locate in the park was an emerging hardware cooperative… Ace Hardware Corporation!

Initially occupying a 160,000 square foot building, the warehouse consisted of four large bays. But by 1970, it was enlarged by 100,000 sq ft; at a quartermillion-square-foot, it was a massive facility at that time. Approximately 200 people were employed in warehouse, office, and buying positions. Many of these individuals were Benicia residents, including Benicia High graduate Lon McAnally.

As a fourteen-year-old Benicia boy, Lon worked at King’s Market (in the Quonset building where S.P. Automotive Supply now stands). His father, James, was the Public Works Director for the City of Benicia and his mother, Debbie, served as the assistant to the Superintendent of Schools (Callout: Debbie’s sister, Candi Estey, is a well known realtor in Benicia!).

Lon graduated from Benicia High entering the Air Force Reserve; as a medic, he tended to wounded soldiers returning from Vietnam.

In 1968, he took a position with Ace Hardware, beginning a career that spanned an impressive forty-five years! By the 1980s he was managing the West Coast for Ace, including four warehouses, 150 trucks, and 700 employees.

It was during this period that I joined my family’s business in Crockett and also made the decision to join Ace. A dealerowned cooperative, it made sense as the Ace warehouse was so close to Crockett. We were not the only party to join the Ace family. In 2003, Lon’s daughter, Sarah, joined Ace Hardware in marketing and to this day, she and I continue to work on many projects!

Hardware flourished during this period and this put great pressure on the Benicia facility. One day, from his office in City of Industry, McAnally was instructed to return to his hometown; Ace officials had announced a move to a new one million sq ft warehouse in Rocklin and he was asked to help close the Benicia complex. His career at Ace began with opening the Benicia warehouse and sixteen years later he was called back to help shutter it? A sad irony? “You know I never thought of it in that way,” he told me. Growth continues for Ace; last October, Ace announced the construction of a second one million sqft facility in Visalia, CA. Recently, Ace Hardware was recognized by Forbes as the top 3rd most admired retailer, and while it no longer has a warehouse in Benicia, it does have a strong Ace presence: Pedrotti Hardware! Both of our organizations owe a huge debt of gratitude to Mayor Lemos and Benicia City officials who foresaw an important future; in saving the arsenal and saving jobs, they laid the groundwork that two companies, one local and one national, would become powerhouses in their fields.

Ok Kyong Hanrahan Around Town Art Scene

If there’s a crowd of people on a Saturday afternoon outside the doorway of the HQ Gallery on First Street, chances are, popular nature photographer Ok Kyong Hanrahan is on duty and has hung her remarkable wildlife images outside for visitors to see. Her crisp, vibrantly colorful photographs capture images of hummingbirds in flight, ospreys and redtailed hawks catching their prey, a rare bald eagle feeding its young, and other local scenery.

Hanrahan first began sharing her photos two years ago on Facebook in the Benicia Beauty group. She was surprised by the positive feedback she received, which motivated her to work hard improving her craft. In 2020, she accepted an invitation to join the HQ Gallery, where she has increased her following. “I am so flattered to know that so many people now have my work hanging in their homes.”

“I have always been interested in photography, but it took me a while to get into it seriously,” said Hanrahan. “My early motivation was around photographing 24 • Benicia Magazine

rock concert performances, but these opportunities did not come often, so I began shooting nature scenes and found that bird photography was what I really enjoyed the most.” Friend and fellow gallery member Ebbie Navas admiringly calls Ok Kyong the “birdwoman of Benicia” for her extensive knowledge of the local bird species, which she gained mainly through internet research. “While I also enjoy shooting landscapes and wildlife in general, birds are the most fascinating to me because of the incredible variety of species in our local area, and the different behavior patterns they have,” says Hanrahan.

A Benicia resident since 2003, Hanrahan grew up in a suburb of Ulsan, in the southeast of South Korea. She attended the Pusan University of Foreign Studies where she majored in Japanese and English. After graduation she worked at the Officer’s Club at the US Army base in Pusan, where she met her husband Kevin in 1989. They moved to the US in 1991.

Hanrahan is mostly self-taught. She got her first serious DSLR, a Canon

70D, in 2013, and now uses the Canon R5. Her favorite lens is the 600mm f/4L lens, as well as the 70-200mm f/2.8L and 24-70mm f/2.8L lenses. “I have not taken any formal photography classes, but I do learn some skills and get some

Column A (Soap Opera) mystery ideas from online courses. Mostly, I just try to learn from experience, making mistakes, and lots of practice. The photos I like the best are anthropomorphic: the ones where you can sense some personality of the animal, possibly humorous, where you feel like you know what the animal is thinking.”

On a typical day, Hanrahan takes her camera out once or twice, in the early morning and/or the late afternoon, to get the best light. “Benicia has so many great locations for wildlife photography,

and I will head to a spot depending on the tide level and what kind of wildlife I hope to capture.”

Her “go-to birding spots” include the Benicia Marina for Night Herons and Green Herons, and anywhere along the waterfront or marshes for Great or Snowy Egrets. She photographs pelicans, kites, hawks, and ospreys at the Benicia State Recreation Area.

Hanrahan has equipped a Sprinter van for offroad use, allowing her to get into some rough and muddy places. “I use it as a mobile blind, because birds are sometimes easily scared by people, but not as much by vehicles. The Sprinter is ideal because I can stand at full height and shoot with a tripod, and it is roomy enough to carry a lot of gear for shoots or display racks for art shows.” She calls her van the “Vogelfanger,” which is German for “birdcatcher,” the character in Mozart’s Magic Flute.

Hanrahan remains humble and unassuming, despite her growing following. “The response has been so great that I am now opening my own studio in the Headquarters Building of the Benicia Arsenal.” In addition to providing a space to hang additional inventory for showing by appointment or an occasional reception, the studio will allow her to clear the mat boards and other photography supplies taking over her dining room and garage. As the moonlight dances on the dark waves of Benicia the F.A.C.T. event is in full swing. Angela and Madalyn are surveying the room.

Madalyn beams with pride, looking at all the people enjoying the music, food, and the ambience as she starts to become aware of a lot of new people in the crowd, some of whom she doesn’t recognize.

She comments to Angela who is also observing the room. “There’s a lot of new faces.” “Yes, Connie has a lot of friends from many different places,” Angela answers, thinking of all the backdoor deals going down at this event, looking around at drug runners, money launderers, and dangerous people hob-knobbing with each other. “I thought I left all this behind,” she thinks to herself. At that moment, her train of thought is broken by the voice of Olivia Leavenworth. “Ladies! It looks like you pulled it off. This is a wonderful event and I just looked at the numbers and I'm very happy,” she says with delight. “It really was all Madalyn this year; I couldn't have done it without her and she did a bang-up job!”

Angela says, letting Madalyn take the credit. “Well, you did wonderfully Madalyn! We might have to talk about getting you on some other committees. Excuse me, I think I see my son and his date. We'll talk later!” And with that, Olivia is off, leaving the other two to bask in the success of the event. Madalyn, checking her watch, says, “It’s almost time for the art auction.”

Saraya and Xavier walk into the event immediately running into Olivia.

“Hello, mom.” “Hi, honey. I’m sorry you got held up,” Olivia says, greeting her son. “Hi, Mrs. Leavenworth,” Saraya says. “Hello, Saraya. I see you finally decided to show up. I hope we don’t have any more… mishaps,” she says, staring Saraya down. “You two, enjoy. Xavier, please mingle,” she says, softening her gaze upon her son. Olivia then leaves to greet guests.

One of the most popular aspects of science fiction novels is their attempt to grapple with what it means to be human. Stina Leicht takes this topic to a whole new level in Persephone Station, creating a story around a wide range of characters with diverse gender identities, different backgrounds, and varying levels of humanity. Leicht goes to great lengths to make this thrilling space opera as inclusive as possible with its cast of kick-butt women, nonbinary, and queer characters teaming up to fight the corporate overlords of the almost lawless planet, Persephone.

Over a century ago, the Emissaries, hidden beings indigenous to the planet, gifted prolonged life to Rosie, a nonbinary cleric-colonizer, and Vissia, the future head of a corporation that owns Persephone.

Unfortunately, because of complications attached to this gift, Vissia is bent on

exploiting the Emissaries, stealing their technology, and eliminating them from their planet. To fulfill a promise they made a century ago, the now crime boss and owner of Monk’s Bar, Rosie, hires a group of mercenaries to protect the Emissaries at all costs.

This group of ex-soldiers turned mercenaries is led by Angel de la Reza.

A former United Republic of Worlds marine, trained as a fighter in an all-girls martial arts school, she is witty, rugged, and quick to steal the reader’s heart.

Angel believes that once honor is lost, there is no regaining it. As a result, she has an almost impossible to break habit of doing the right thing regardless of the circumstances.

Angel's crew consists of Sukyi, a wildcard from Nigeria who is terminally ill and loves to blow things up, Lou, an adrenaline junky pilot, and Enid, a skillful assassin with an incredibly dry sense of humor.

In addition to Angel’s squad, Rosie enlists the help of the child of a respected scientist whose groundbreaking work permitted artificial intelligence to possess empathy. Kennedy Liu herself is a genetically-edited AI placed in a human body.

Through her awkward attempts at understanding what having a human body entails, we get some hilarious moments as she experiences universal human emotions and the bodily reactions associated with them.

In Persephone Station, Leicht builds a fantastical world rooted in well-known human failures. The book addresses the grisly business of expansion, displacement, and the question of who the actual alien is. Although there are moments where it felt like this novel was trying to do and be too much (inclusive, action-packed, and chock-full of social commentary), Leicht’s ability to write complex and entertaining characters kept me engaged and made the book impossible to put down. Leicht’s novel is extremely relevant now as exploitation and violence plague our own planet.

If you were hoping for a romance heavy book as our February review, I’d love to recommend Winter’s Orbit by Everina Maxwell as an alternative science fiction option. Otherwise, I truly hope you give Persephone Station a chance, if only to experience a novel with the diversity that’s often missing in science fiction.

While watching, I felt like I was a part of the aquariumlike photography, beautiful with vibrant colors, in balance, flowing with the tides, moving naturally and in the right time.

Craig Foster is the founder of the Sea Change Project, which continues to tell stories that connect people to the wild, encouraging the regeneration of the planet. His documentary is food for the soul.

Directed by Pippa Ehrlich and James Reed, produced by Craig Foster, this film won the Academy Award for best documentary of 2021. Netflix. One hour, 30 minutes.
