February 2019 I’ve always been a walker. One of my favorite things about Benicia is that for the past 35 years, I’ve been able to open my front door and on foot or bike, enjoy historic downtown charm, waterfront beauty or Southampton’s hills. One great benefit we can crow about is that four major Bay trails run through our town, including the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the Great California Delta Trail. This year I’ll be looking into where each of the trails transverse our little burb.

year and a few months after its opening, Benicians are still discovering the hip, boho-chic boutique tucked inside the cute cottage behind Community Garden’s plot near the bottom of First Street. Located at 117 East D Street, Collektive is owned and carefully curated by Jennifer Negrete, who’s main goals are affordable, quality fashion for women of every age, as well as creating a warm and welcoming community vibe. She says, “The space is very inviting with lots of couches. I want people to meet their girlfriends here, browse around and visit. I have teens and people over 70 who shop here. I try really hard to incorporate everyone without losing the contemporary feel.”

Her own line, Eva Knox, which is self-described as “a juxtaposition of my polished side and my bohemian, yet edgy side,” is sold at all the Maker’s Markets in the Bay Area (see our story on Maker Markets in the November issue). It’s her love of handmade accessories and connections in the maker community that led her to opening Collektive near the end of 2017, originally with the idea that it would just be a holiday pop-up. “It started with my jewelry as the main focus and then bringing in other makers that I was friends with. Then I approached makers I loved from Etsy who had accessories and handmade items. When I incorporated clothing, it really took off.”

A little over a year later, Collektive is still here and growing. Negrete just quit her day job as a paralegal assistant in order to meet customer demand and keep the shop open six days a week. She purchases clothes in small batches, mostly from trendy LA designers, and tries to rotate every couple weeks to keep things fresh.

“The clothing has taken off. People love that they can come in and grab a tube top to go out in, and have it cost less than $40.”

The shop is a feast for the senses with brightly colored wall hangings, inviting seating, rich textures, and areas of curated accessories and jewelry to peruse at leisure.

Negrete says, “I am a creative person, and my goal is for it to be a creative space.” Part of this goal is to begin holding monthly workshops. Collektive will also be starting up their weekly Coffee Fridays again, on Friday mornings starting at 10am when the store opens, so shoppers can sip a warm drink while they browse. For a romantic getaway, Vercelli said the Caribbean blends tropical scenery with cultural experiences.

Visitors will hear a patois similar to Louisiana’s French Creole, she said. It’s reflected in Caribbean cuisine.

Restaurants serve dishes from Africa and Europe alongside plantains and mangos. Diners may be surprised by Jamaica’s creative use of spinach and Antigua’s sweet black pineapples, a delicacy found nowhere else.

Each place has its own charm. Jamaica is ideal for those who want rich nightlife, while Saint Lucia has a milder vibe, said Vercelli. “You will have white sands and blue waters—the fish will swim right up to you.” Guests find fresh orchids tucked into folded towels, and customized pillows and room scents.

Italy is an alternative for those who want a romantic destination with beautiful scenery. “People are very friendly, and you feel welcome,” she said. Bali, India and Sri Lanka are popular destinations for those who want a good value. Fiji is higher-end, but it’s ideal for those who want natural beauty, personal service and plenty of privacy, she said.

Croatia is also popular, glamorized in the television series Game of Thrones,” she said, adding, “It’s like how Iceland was romanticized because of Frozen.” Iceland still remains popular with those who enjoy hiking.

Vercelli's most unusual request came from a couple who wanted to see whale sharks in Belize, she said. Another option is a river cruise, especially for those who want to spend time with their spouse while taking in some sightseeing.

Romantic trips aren’t limited to young honeymooners, said Vercelli. Older couples who couldn’t afford special experiences when they first were married, or were too busy rearing their children, often decide it’s finally time for their dream trip.

Benicians can find wonderful romantic trips close to home, too, said Vercelli. “I like Monterey and Carmel.” Those trips are ideal for those who like visiting spas and wineries. “You can take an old Route 66 trip on California 1, where there are cute bed and breakfasts and resorts.” Vercelli has stayed at the older but updated Monterey Tides. “Go sit by the fireplace with a hot beverage, do a little sight-seeing,” she said. “Then come back, get a massage and relax for the day.” Travelers can take walks on trails where they may see deer, or they can ride a train up and down the coast. “Or drive to Vichy Springs, where Mark Twain stayed,” she said.

But Benicians don’t have to leave town to create a memorable Valentine’s Day experience. Those who prefer an outdoor experience can take romantic strolls at the nature-filled Benicia State Recreation Area. Or they may decide to browse the city’s downtown, tour the Capitol and dine at one of the city’s traditional eateries or at one of the new hipster restaurants.

And those experiences don’t have to be limited to Valentine’s Day, said Vercelli. “Romance can be any time of the year!”

Positive and Healthy, or Pain in the Neck?

Eric Hoglund As I write this article, 2018 is coming to an end, and I am reflecting on all that has come to pass, I cannot help but look forward to a new year and a new adventure. I know everyone had his or her own unique experience this past year. Friends’ stories range from “this was the best year of my life” to “I cannot wait to turn the page and start anew in 2019.” I myself endured the most physically painful months of my life, culminating in having two discs replaced in my neck. Even this trial, I look on as a picture of the collective overall experience.

No matter the circumstance, you can depend on change. No matter the pain, good things will emerge. Even things that seem to start quickly can ultimately lead to a slow down before a full recovery.

We have seen the economy soar this year, only to slow toward the end due to repeated interest rate hikes, elections, new trade agreements and trade battles.

The stock market has been quite volatile in the last quarter, due to geo-political uncertainty, financial manipulations by the FED, and ultimately fears of a slowdown in 2019 forcing a pulling away from riskier stocks. Unemployment remained very low as predicted.

Gross Domestic Product steadily increased at a very healthy rate.

New construction increased but the high cost of construction, coupled with interest rate hikes, slowed new single family home starts, while at the same time, the volatile multi-family industry managed to increase by 10.3%, according to Kiplinger’s.

Between doctor appointments and surgery, I managed to sell a lot of homes and lease many properties, but the way that looked in the first half of the year was quite different than the way that things developed in the latter part of 2018. Early on, we were still in a hot seller’s market. Properties hit the MLS and soon after, multiple offers flowed in. By the end of the year the average days on market grew significantly, and while the sale prices were not substantially affected, the way that homes were marketed and ultimately negotiated was quite different.

According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), 2017 hit a 10-year high with 5.51 million sales, and 2018 was down just about 1.5% to about 5.35 million, most of which happened in the first two quarters, with noticeable slowing in the third quarter and a slight rebound in Q4. Overall inventory remains low in both the sale and leasing markets, but with high employment, interest rates on the rise, and the stock market’s volatility, many potential buyers and renters are staying put. They are not quick to jump into the market, nor are they as quick to move to a new rental.

This doesn’t mean that the housing market is in trouble by any means. It does mean that the home must be right, the price must be right, and the terms must be right in order to entice them.

NAR predicts that the total sales in 2019 will increase slightly to 5.4 million (about 1%). I’m telling you that sellers should expect significantly longer days on market next year, and should plan to make sure their home is well marketed. This means staging the home, and upgrades and repairs being completed prior to sale, but it also means choosing an agent that understands the changing market and then listening to their trusted advice.

Quite frankly, I am not easily surprised by anything anymore.

That may be a result of too much too fast, desensitizing me. Or maybe it is the media trying to fuel a constant state of anxiety in order to fill their 24-hour news cycle, or the general sense of incivility in our culture, or the fact that the old body is breaking down faster than I anticipated, I don’t know.

No matter the reason, I am liberated by it. I don’t constantly live in a state of shock, and I think this allows me to develop some perspective. For instance, I am not too worried about interest rate hikes. They promote savings, most economists agree that they are needed to maintain a healthy economy, and they are still at historic lows when it comes to home purchases. I refuse to let a challenging sales market create a sense of dread for 2019. Folks in the real estate business, like me, will have to step up our game to help our clients grab their dreams and make them realities.

If Americans are working, they are buying goods and services, and moving themselves and their families down the road to success. Here's a news flash: the stock market goes up and down. In fact, whether the market is at 22,000 or 26,000 makes little difference to me on a day-to-day basis. I do like to watch overall trends, and so here is my prediction for 2019, based on the trends I am seeing.

Everything is going to be OK. We are going to sell just about the same number of homes as we did last year, albeit with a flatter appreciation increase. Homes are going to stay on the market a little longer, but they will sell. Your rental price increases will slow significantly, but that’s ok too, because the vacancy rate will remain low.

Overall, the economy will continue to grow next year, and unemployment will remain low, if not decrease. While I have stated that I am not easily surprised, I don’t want you to be surprised either. Especially if you see me more this year … because I am finally rid of this pain in the neck and I am looking forward to getting after it in 2019.

Tea Room Afternoon “Bring someone who could use a little extra love.”

Courtney Tait Maybe it’s because I miss my mom, who lives in Canada and who I haven’t seen in more than a year, but sitting in Camellia Tea Room on a Thursday afternoon surrounded by women made me feel nostalgic; warmed from the inside.

There was the group of 12-or-so ladies in their 50s and 60s around a big table in the middle, catching up over teapots and champagne cocktails and three-tiered trays piled with scones and finger sandwiches. Then there were the two women at the table next to me, one of whom said she wasn’t really a tea drinker but couldn’t believe how fantastic the mango tango tasted. There was Heather McLaughlin, Benicia’s City Attorney, who comes for lunch almost every weekday.

And then there was the staff: Maryellen Hayes, who opened the Tea Room in 1995 with her daughter Casey Garcia; Beth Cruz, Maryellen’s other daughter, who joined the team ten years ago; Lisa, who has served there for 17 years, and Madonna and Claire, weaving through the packed room seamlessly as classical piano streamed softly through the speakers.

My at-home tea repertoire consists mostly of peppermint or lemon ginger, so I decided to branch out during my visit and ordered the best seller: Blue Lady. It’s a flavored black tea with coconut cream, strawberry, kiwi, and blue flowers, and arrived in a blue and white pot. My amateur palette couldn’t discern the strawberry or kiwi, but the coconut came through, rich and smooth. There are more than 40 loose-leaf options on the menu, and you can enjoy the ritual with a combination of finger sandwiches, scones, sweets, or, like I did, with lunch.

The Tea Room is known for its Stuffed Potato and Tomato Bisque, but I opted for the Italian Tuna Salad Sandwich with a cup of the day’s special: French Onion Soup. The soup came first, served with cubes of french bread drenched beneath deeply flavorful onion broth and topped with grated cheese.

When the sandwich arrived, a generous layer of Albacore salad, lettuce, tomato and capers between thick slices of herbed focaccia, I was happily topping up my tea and admiring the bronze and white wallpapered ceiling. (The sandwich, too, was delicious.)

As it turns out, the ornate patterned wallpaper — from local company Bradbury & Bradbury — was part of the inspiration to open a Tea Room. “We thought about what would work in this space,” says Casey, who, along with Maryellen, researched the tea tradition extensively prior to opening. “Tea is about bringing people together. It enables you to slow down, take a break in your day, and enjoy the company of friends and family.”

While the business started out as primarily an afternoon tea spot, the demand for lunch items was apparent, and the menu soon expanded. Chef Brandie Wendt creates a range of salads (including Cashew Chicken and Shrimp Avocado) and Sandwiches (such as Chicken Artichoke Salad and White

Cheddar and Housemade Pickle), while Casey and Maryellen bake desserts. I have sampled both the Chocolate Croissant Bread Pudding and a Lemon Tartlet, and both are must-tries for sweet tooths.

Whether you’re a tea drinker or not, visit Camellia Tea Room.

Bring your mom or daughter or sister or friend. Bring the aunt who misses you. Bring someone who could use a little extra love. “We treat our customers like family,” says Beth, “and that’s why a lot of people come back.”

He said a diversified economy is key to addressing Benicia’s infrastructure needs for years to come, although he wants the city to remember its environmental responsibilities, too.

His focus is on public safety, rising water and sewer costs and road repair, and he wants to work creatively with other government agencies in finding financial solutions.

Businesswoman and new Vice Mayor Christina Strawbridge also has Economic Development Board ties, and has returned to the Council after serving a previous term. Along with many years championing the arts, economic growth and downtown vitality, Strawbridge said that established Industrial Park businesses are key, and the Council must “work to retain and enhance their opportunities for success.”

Steve Young wants economic diversity and hopes new cannabis companies will expand Benicia’s tax base. Like his colleagues, he has environmental worries, such as Valero Benicia Refinery’s May, 2017 flaring incident. He sees air quality as a public safety issue as well as a health matter.

Dr. Tom Campbell’s vision of Benicia is “a safe little city with great schools, parks and infrastructure” and “a place where people can have a good time.” His first priority is the budget, and he hopes to generate more money from the Port of Benicia and the cannabis tax.

Mayor Elizabeth Patterson’s platform since 2003 has been ensuring the General Plan is followed. Her goal is “a sustainable city in all matters, for economic, environmental and equity of city services,” she said. “We are a small town with great ‘bones’ and great people who care and who

work hard to be leaders in the development of clean tech, mitigating and adapting to climate change, supporting our arts and cultural endeavors, preserving our historical resources and being the best place to live, work and recreate.”

All advocated collaboration and cooperation, and many said they want city action to be transparent to residents.

It’s a budget year, Patterson added, and the Council will be taking a priority-based approach to its developing. To keep the charming ambiance Campbell described, Patterson said Benicia needs to remain walkable. But some of the sidewalks are in poor shape. The Council may need to consider whether the burden of sidewalk upkeep should be borne alone by property owners, she said.

Young said he hopes more money can be spent on road repairs. He joined several others in hoping to find ways to reduce customers’ water rates. The Council faces multiple challenges, including adopting a new budget and the associated documents that describe Benicia’s goals and priorities.

Campbell, a 17-year veteran, said members need to be flexible, to listen and to respect each other’s viewpoints.

“This new Council reminds me of my first City Council, in that there were sharp contrasts in basic views on many issues.

This new Council may prove to be very entertaining.”

“I’m confident this Council is positioned to work for the best interests of Benicia,” Largaespada said. “We’re going to bring diverse perspectives to each meeting on every topic and represent every neighborhood.” Strawbridge agreed, saying each member brings a particular expertise to the Council. She hopes for a welcoming of new ideas as well as courage and tenacity. “The bottom line is that we all want what is best for Benicia,” she said.

When it comes to trails, Benicia is blessed. Instead of one or two, this city can boast of four major trails that run through Solano Vallejo Benicia Buffer Trail its boundaries, said Teri Davena, Benicia’s Economic

I like that we appear on all four important trails,” she said. “The land trails offer spectacular views and access to Benicia’s waterfront, and peaks for people on foot or on bikes. You can literally bike or hike from bridge to bridge or take a loop around the Carquinez Strait.”

Two trails are land-based: The San Francisco Bay Trail, a 500-mile walking and cycling path through all nine Bay Area counties, and the Bay Area Ridge Trail, which eventually will encircle the Bay Area. Two more focus on water: The Great California Delta Trail, with six separate trails, river walks and loops along the SacramentoSan Joaquin river delta; and the San Francisco Bay Water Trail, for kayakers, kite boarders and outrigger sailors, with launches throughout the Bay Area. One of those is in Benicia, too, at Ninth Street. “Some of our frequent users include Benicia Kite & Paddle Sports and Benicia Outrigger Canoe Club,” Davena said.

If the four trails give Benicia residents a chance to go out and explore, they also provide a way for those living elsewhere to discover Benicia. “Because we have unique, independent businesses, visitors can experience specialty shops with great customer service, from fashion to gifts to home & garden to vintage. Our restaurants are excellent and offer a wide variety of dining for our little town,” she said.

Benicia also is a good destination for history buffs among the hikes and cyclists, she said.

“We are one of the oldest cities in California—third incorporated city and third state capital, plus an arsenal authorized by Abraham Lincoln,” she said.

“There are unique museums and historical sights to explore with every visit.” Or they can take in the city’s arts community, she said, whether individual artists or its landmark studios in the Benicia Arsenal or on First Street. “Finally, there’s our beautiful waterfront. Did 12th Street you know we are one of the few cities in the Bay Area where you can walk right to the waterfront waterfront, and dip your toe in? Other coastlines have private waterfront properties. But in Benicia, we prize our

If anyone is familiar with Bay Area trails, it’s Bob Berman. For 27 years, as a member of the Solano Land Trust Board, he worked with trail proponents. Then he joined the Bay Area Ridge Trail Board of Directors. When it’s completed, the Bay Area Ridge Trail will be a 550-mile circle. Of this, 375 miles are complete. Additionally, the Carquinez Strait Scenic Loop takes in the Carquinez and the Benicia-Martinez bridges, with longer and shorter Visit these websites to learn more about the loop options. Starting in American Canyon near Newell Ranch, they went to the Hiddenbrooke Trailhead and camped overnight at McIntyre Ranch. Like true campers, they dined on s’mores. The next day, they hiked through the Benicia-Vallejo buffer zone and into the Benicia State Recreation Area.

“In two days, we did a 20-mile hike. It was magnificent. It was like you were a thousand miles away from anything,” Berman said. “That’s the type of thing we’re trying to give people the opportunity to do—close-in recreation that feels miles away.”

Jeanne Steinmann For the past decade, backyard chicken coops have been on the rise across the U.S. From major cities to tiny suburbs, Americans are flocking to urban farming; and now more than ever we are paying close attention to how our food is grown and harvested.

Though there seems to be some confusion about what it takes to raise chickens for tasty organic omelets, those who are dedicated to learning the pros and cons of raising chickens generally find success, and for reasons other than egg production. Why are so many people attracted to this trend? One very real concern is how chickens are processed in commercial factories: overcrowded conditions, entire lives lived in battery cages, antibiotic use and lack of light and fresh air. These and other abuses have been widely reported, calling into question the quality of commercially produced eggs.

Poultry is a huge business. To provide meals with white meat, according to Vox.com, just shy of 20 billion chickens are raised and killed each year worldwide. According to Unitedegg.com, in 2016, over 88 billion eggs were produced in the U.S., and in 2017, there were 319 million commercial laying hens. Many of those hens exist their entire lives in the size of a sheet of paper.

Although many states have animal confinement laws, including California, progress is slow and chickens and other animals still have minimal space. In addition, chickens are fed GMO foods such as GMO corn and soy. Inherently cruel, factory chicken farming concentrates enormous numbers of chickens into tiny spaces for maximum profit and efficiency. According to a University of Maryland and other research studies, feed additives in manure can leach into local waterways, taking a toll on the environment.

We all want to eat healthy food, and many of us are embracing backyard chicken coops. But there are other reasons to raise chickens—lots of them.

Aside from being able to provide a healthy environment in which to produce eggs, backyard chickens can be a family project, where the birds are often integrated as pets. It’s a living science lesson for kids, who get to see chicks grow to fully mature hens. Kids can also take an active roll from feeding and helping manage the coop to fetching and cooking the harvest.

Chickens also cut down on food waste—they eat kitchen scraps such as grains (oatmeal, bread, etc.), fruit and vegetables. Their yokes are richer with exposure to a natural environment, including fresh air, room to roam and eating grasses and weeds. In addition, chickens eat a wide range of bugs such as grasshoppers, worms and beetles. They provide natural fertilizer that is coveted for healthy garden soil. There’s also an ecological benefit: when chickens scratch for grubs, they aerate the soil with their feet, tilling under leaves and other bio matter, which enriches the soil.

As with anything, chicken coops are not work-free. In addition to collecting the eggs, chickens should be observed to ensure their general health, and that mites are avoided. They need adequate food and water every day. Coops must be cleaned regularly, waterers needs to be cleaned and sanitized, chickens need to be protected from predators, and depending on climate, kept warm in winter.

Though backyard chickens are a move towards self-sufficiency, perhaps the most interesting benefit is that chickens can be wonderfully entertaining. Along with showing affection towards their owners, the birds can be quite funny with their hierarchies and antics. And according to Healthylivingmagazine.us, “Watching chickens scratch in the dirt is immensely relaxing and therapeutic. Listening to them coo and cackle is calming. Learning to live in the moment is one lesson chickens can teach you. Chickens also help teach children responsibility … and show them where their food comes from.”

By Donna Covey Fine art and miniature paintings by Barbara Stanton have found their way in collections around the world. Beginning in February, her petite oil paintings of landscapes, portraits, and figurative life drawings will be on exhibit at Arata Art Gallery on First Street.

Barbara, who has lived in the Bay Area her entire life and has shown her art in shows throughout the United States, is excited to be the first featured artist in Benicia’s newest art gallery.

Her charming landscapes, still lifes, animals and people are done in a very traditional, realistic style. Her superb use of color and light make each piece glow. The precisely detailed compositions, some no larger than a postage stamp, call out to the viewer to step nearer and explore them more closely, to feel the moment.

Beneath the Black: A Young Artist Protects

By Rebecca Gulick It was a kindergarten teacher’s concern for the emotional wellbeing of her student. That’s why Cherry Moore’s mother was summoned to school that day. “Do you like the black drawings?” they asked Cherry worriedly.

But Cherry’s drawings weren’t black. That was just their protective coating. Before, her teacher would always tell her to change her drawings in some way. “So I decided to draw it how I liked it then color over it in black so she couldn’t make me change it,” Cherry explains.

Years later, the abstract painter and printmaker still defies the norms, but now she doesn’t have to conceal her artwork. “For me, it’s color, balance, and emotion,” she said. Varied creative processes stoke Cherry’s passion and fascination. “Canvas is more visceral, while printmaking is much more analytical.”

Cherry’s paintings are acrylic on canvas and board, and her printmaking includes collagraph and monotype techniques.

She considers her approach to be experimental. “I have to try things. So much of it is quite often a surprise.”

Miniature dollhouse collectors are some of Barbara Stanton’s biggest fans because they fit just right in their fine miniature collections—small enough for dollhouses but not toys.

Barbara also enjoys studying the human form and helps run a local figure drawing workshop at the Bothwell Arts Center in Livermore. She has worked in traditional mediums for years, but lately Barbara has been drawing on her iPad. And she’s proud that she was the first American artist featured on the Australian TV Show Colour in Your Life with Master Artist Graeme Stevenson in 2016. She is also a dedicated art instructor, teaching children and adults.

The Benicia community and beyond will be able to view Barbara’s art show entitled Smaller than Life, February 1- March 17 at Arata Art Gallery, 637 First Street in Benicia.

By Christina Strawbridge Wearing glasses has been a challenge for me since I was first diagnosed in the 8th grade as being nearsighted.

Sister Mary Helene noticed me squinting during her math class, and suggested to my parents that I was not participating because of my eyesight. (More like I didn’t know the answers to complex math equations.)

My parents took me to an ophthalmologist, along with my younger brother Mark, who was having his own vision problems. After a thorough examination it was determined that the nun was right, I needed glasses. Picking out a frame was based on price, not on being cool, and my first pair was ordinary.

Somehow, there was a big mix-up, not only with the prescription, but how it was filled. I remember walking out of the office taking huge steps, thinking there were stairs in front of me. After a few weeks of high stepping, the problem was identified and corrected. I could actually see the chalkboard, but still didn’t know the answer. I chose to wear my hornrimmed glasses in class, but never during recess or, heaven forbid, on a date.

It’s only been in the past few years that I got over the four-eyes stigma. In the 60s I chose large, round sunglasses that had interchangeable tinted lenses, in the 70s it was a Gloria Steinem aviator style.

The 80s brought round, Annie Hall-inspired specs. In the 90s, a sleek, metal mix, and the 2000s: retro cat eyes.

Eyewear has evolved dramatically since those days, when you wore the same pair of glasses for a lifetime. Fashion has influenced this trend, with top designers licensing their names to stylish frames available to the vision-impaired public, including John Lennon, Lady Gaga, Elton John, Jackie O, Carol Channing, Bono and Clark Kent, aka Superman. Local celebs Ed and Sally Brennan, and my mom, have cemented their unique image with eyewear.

My new glasses are designed by Vera Wang and are oversized black frames with copper sequin stems. I have had mixed reviews on their size and style. An older gentleman recently yelled out, “Elton, Elton!” to get my attention. I have found this new look to be empowering, and most importantly I can see the chalkboard!
