What better month to finish our twelfth year of publishing than October, full of whimsical fun and amusing entertainments? In honor of the spirit, so to speak, we’ve made some sprightly changes adding two new columns, art and live music. Our goal is always to celebrate what’s special about living here, and these additions are certainly warranted.

Wrapping up our 144th issue, it’s interesting to note how much Benicia has changed these past twelve years, and since 1983 when we made our home here. Today, Benicia stands as proud as our history dictates, and I am glad to trumpet those elements that offer—as Christina Strawbridge notes in Trends, discussing community theater—a wealth of social capitol.

In addition to Benicia’s stunning backdrop of the Carquinez Strait, in September the Downtown Benicia Alliance successfully renewed the B.I.D. that will keep the lights providing a soft glow on First Street, welcoming residents and tourists from Military West to the waterfront. Family-friendliness is paramount here, and this month’s Halloween offerings include lots of kid events—check out Benicia Main Street’s events page for the numerous downtown activities. One of the more passive options is to view custom scarecrows all over town as merchants vie for the most interesting display.

Turns out that Benicia is fun for adults, too. Downtown nightlife is on the uptick, providing adults with upscale entertainment, including the Zombie Brew Crawl, Saturday, October 14, 1-5pm. Costumes are optional but if the past is any indication, those who do dress up are frightfully authentic. In the food and drink arena, local bar and restaurant owners are investing in serious improvements: expanding, remodeling and redesigning menus.

Check out our feature on Benicia’s growing cocktail culture, offering locals the perfect alternative to leaving town. Case in point: Rookies has a yummy new menu, the former 907 Grill, now Nine Zero Seven Eatery, Bar, Social Lounge has a hip, contemporary vibe, The Loft is now a full service bar/ restaurant and Lucca continues to bring live music to the Beer Garden.

Watch for additional “revisions” to the mag next month as we update our content to meet the kaleidoscopic needs of a demographic wanting to fully experience all our town has to offer.

Arts Benicia's Rich Legacy Continues

Funding for Bay Area Clay - A Legacy of Social Consciousness is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.

Bay Area Clay: A Legacy of Social Consciousness, one of a series of special events put on by Arts Benicia as the organization celebrates its 30th year, opens October 14. This most recent exhibition features works by internationally recognized artists, curated by Lisa Reinertson, nationally known for her life-size figurative ceramic sculptures, and large-scale public sculptures cast in bronze. In addition to its gallery exhibitions and annual Art Auction, Arts Benicia kicked off a slate of “cultural collaborations” with other Benicia nonprofits such as the Benicia Unified School District, Benicia Historical Museum, City of Benicia and others.

The exhibition is supported in part by a $10,000 Art Works Grant to Arts Benicia from the National Endowment for the Arts.

“Arts Benicia is grateful for NEA’s support of this exceptional exhibition,” said Executive Director Celeste Smeland. “The award is testimony to the importance of these artists and recognition of Arts Benicia’s leadership in bringing nationally recognized art to the community. We are pleased to have the opportunity to highlight the influential work of these clay artists.” The exhibit features works by Robert Arneson, Stephen de Staebler, Viola Frey, Arthur Gonzalez, Michelle Gregor, Marc Lancet, Mark Messenger, Richard Notkin, Lisa Reinertson, Richard Shaw, Ehren Tool, Monica Van Den Dool, Stan Welsh, and Wanxin Zhang. The selected artworks will be on view in the Arts Benicia gallery from October 14 through November 19.

According to Mary Shaw, Arts Benicia’s exhibitions and programs manager, early Bay Area clay sculptors were addressing themes of the human condition reflected in the social and political issues of the times.

By working in the medium of clay, which was outside of the “fine art establishment,” ceramic artists felt a great freedom of expression to respond to social issues such as the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights movement, and the Women’s Rights movement. Many of these artists were also teachers of a clay community that was blossoming in the Bay Area during this period. The exhibition focuses on how these pioneers of the Bay Area Ceramic Movement influenced several generations of West Coast clay sculptors, and how contemporary clay artists continue to bring their commentary on our current social, political, and environmental issues.

Internationally recognized artist Dennis Sheil will be exhibiting his works, Beyond the Brush, through October 31 at Downtown Benicia’s Milinda Perry Gallery. After growing up in a small town in Iowa, then 20 years in the Air Force, Sheil now lives in Fairfield, California. The long-time art collector says the influence of art in his daily life has fueled his passion for painting. “My art is a reflection of the abstract life I lead; often times calming and peaceful, other times frenzied and chaotic,” he says.

Sheil works as a project manager for an engineering firm. “It is incredibly liberating to be able to dump the data, let loose, and let the paint flow. Abstract and non-representational painting gives me an opportunity to let go of the finite, structured details

I deal with daily. When I pick up a brush or pallet knife to start a new piece, I often have no specific idea or concept in mind— I literally and figuratively start with a blank canvas and see where my mind takes me.

My mood, the music I am listening to, and countless other factors in my life ultimately influence the colors, intensity, and complexity of the piece.”

The public is invited to view the paintings during gallery hours through October, as well as attend an artist reception October 14, 5-7pm.

By Sarah Rohrs With the unfolding of autumn at the start and Halloween at the end, October on First Street is a time of seasonal fun and spooky surprises. It can even be a time for frightful sights and sounds as scores come out to celebrate the ancient Celtic holiday with candy, costumes and, perhaps even a glimpse of the supernatural.

This month, Benicia Main Street has a packed schedule of safe and family-friendly activities for the young and young at heart, as well as an adult-only Zombie Brew Crawl. Halloween-themed entertainment began years ago with a children’s parade down First Street and then expanded to other events. “It’s grown a lot. October is just crazy for us but it’s wonderful crazy,” said Nancy Martinez, Main Street Program executive director.

Here’ s what’ s in store ON FIRST STREET IN OCTOBER Scarecrow Contest Stroll down First Street any day in October and encounter creative scarecrows in downtown shops. Check out how to cast ballots for your favorites at beniciamainstreet.org. A few scarecrows can also be found in Southampton Shopping Center and Davies Square.

Haunted Depot The rear of the historic Southern Pacific Railroad Depot at the foot of First Street is transformed into a chilling place filled with scary creatures. Haunted Depot tours are offered Oct. 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, 29 and, of course, on Halloween. Times vary so check the schedule at beniciamainstreet.org. Admission prices offset costs.

Ghost Walk

Regular walks to explore First Street’s paranormal history and to reveal secrets of Benicia’s past are part of the Halloween lineup. Tours are offered the first and third weekends at the depot. Cost is $25 per person. Prepaid reservations are required at 707.745.9791.

Zombie Brew Crawl Zombie-attired beer lovers flock downtown 1-5pm on Saturday, Oct. 14 to enjoy small craft beer at various shops along First Street. Dare to join them? Costumes encouraged but not required. $25 in advance and $35 the day of the event. Must be 21 or over. Details at beniciamainstreet.org.

Halloween Costume Contest and Sidewalk Stroll A 20-plus year tradition gets underway Saturday, Oct. 28, 10am at City Park. Costumed children walk down First Street, stopping along the way to trick-or-treat. The Canine & Critter Costume Contest follows at noon on the First Street Green. Winners of the costume contest are announced and prizes are awarded at that time.

Cocktail C While Benicia is justifiably proud to be a great family town, downtown nightlife has become a lure for residents and tourists alike, especially when accompanied by live music. First Street's brightly lit trees invite folks to enjoy the charming ambience, and feel safe and welcome after the sun goes down. The renewal of the B.I.D.— administered by the Downtown Benicia Alliance, recently passed by a large majority. After the city is finished pruning the trees, new lights will be installed, just in time for the holidays.

The cozy glow has revitalized the area, increased foot traffic and sales tax revenue, and the street is populated with dog walkers, families out for a bite to eat and others just enjoying the scene.

Another byproduct of increased downtown activity is the investment bars and restaurant owners are making to their businesses and stepping up their game, creating

an upscale atmosphere for adults to indulge in their favorite cocktail. Specialty ingredients and fashionable flavorings add flair and drama to the experience.

We asked downtown bartenders about customer favorites and popular libations. Some drinks are improvised for customers with a sense of adventure, some serve old standards, some drinks have a story and others are highly imaginative.

At Rookies, patrons prefer the Southern Strawberry Lemonade, with strawberry-lemon vodka, fresh lemon and muddled berries, shaken and topped with soda water. Named after Jan and Carl Lucca’s father, Lucca’s “Carminetini,” comes with a backstory. Key ingredients include Skyy Infusions Pineapple Vodka, St. George Raspberry liqueur and Grand Marnier. At Sailor Jacks, the “Shirley Slammer” was improvised by bartender Laurie—an invigorating drink on a

hot September day. Bottom of the 5th customers enjoy “The Blue Flame,” and Cullen’s guests like the classic Old Fashioned, made with Michter’s American Whiskey, Badabing Cherries and Paychaud's Bitters.

For a refreshing sip on October’s still-warm days, The Loft’s “Loft Lemonade” includes fresh mint, fresh basil-lemon puree and Absolut Citron. An interesting offering at The Rellik is “The Verbena,” where you sip first, then completely chew the Szechuan Button perched atop the glass, which has a numbing affect that “opens your taste buds.”

As the drink is consumed, the various flavors are enhanced.

Taking the mystery out of what’s where along First Street in downtown Benicia, this month’s installment covers I Street to J Street. Filled with retail stores, bars, restaurants and specialty businesses, First Street is buzzing with nonstop energy.

Benicia’s 900 Block is in transition. The unreinforced building on the southwest corner of First and J Street is still surrounded by scaffolding, and the lease ended for Benicia Antiques Mall, which has been in that location for many years. As of early September, the rumor is that a bakery café will be moving into the space. Though many lament the loss of the antiques collective, a bakery café would be a most welcome addition to First Street, especially if fresh baked bread and other goodies are available to go. Other restaurants on this block include the Nine Zero Seven Eatery, Bar and Social Lounge, (formerly 907 Grill) which has been completely remodeled into a sleek, hip spot with a full bar. Pacifica Pizza, Venticello’s and Matsuri Sushi are all very popular spots to grab a casual meal.

Along with real estate and professional offices, there are a couple of salons and a small jewelry store. Narcissus Salon, upstairs in the Olson Realty building, has been a stalwart on the block, catering to a loyal clientele.

A Glimpse into the World of Nocturnal Birds of Prey

By Beth Steinmann Owls may be one of the most mysterious and illustrious birds of prey. Their distinct, forward-facing eyes, usually surrounded by a conspicuous plate of feathers, give them a piercing, regal quality. Their ability to traverse the night sky almost silently adds to their dangerous mystique.

DOWNTOWN BENICIA OWLS READY TO FLEDGE Northern California is home to some 15-20 owl species.

Great Horned Owls and Western Screech Owls are both common in the suburbs and can often be heard screeching around town after dark. A Benicia Magazine follower has been photographing a family of common Barn Owls nested in a palm tree downtown. Barn Owls, favored by farmers for keeping rodent populations down, can detect sound arrival intervals at up to ten millionths of a second, allowing them to locate mice with almost exact precision in the dark.

Barn Owls nest in the spring, eggs are laid then incubated for close to a month, and young ones are fledged (taught to fly and fend for themselves) in about two months. Of the owls downtown, the photographer says, “They look down at you and their heads follow you as you walk below. Adorable!” Humans should always be careful not to get too close to an owl nest, as they have been known to attack when under threat.

OWL FACTS — Owl feathers are covered with a velvety structure that aid in quiet flight.

— Owls have binocular vision (they can focus on a single point with both eyes), but their eyes are also fixed in their sockets, which means they must turn their heads to find peripheral focus.

— Most owls can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees, a talent that’s facilitated by the 14 vertebrae in their necks (twice as many as human necks).

— Of close to 200 owl species throughout the world, most are nocturnal, solitary birds that are most active just after dusk and before dawn.

— Many owl species mate for life and return to the same nesting area year after year.

— Owl diets include small rodents and insects, and a few species are adapted to hunting fish.

OWL LORE In a mythological sense, owls have been perceived as governing the realms of darkness, the unseen, the supernatural and the mysterious. Mystery inspires both fear and reverence, depending on cultural context.

— In Ancient Greece, owls were beloved by the goddess Athena. They inhabited the Acropolis in great numbers and were believed to have an “inner light” that imparted their night vision. They were seen as omens of victory in battle.

— Native American nations hold diverse beliefs about owls.

Some tribes have owl clans, and some call owl the “night eagle.” Because of its association with other realms, “owl medicine” may be left to the expertise of medicine people and seers.

— In Celtic mythology, the owl was connected with the goddess in her “crone,” or old woman aspect, and called “crone of the night.”

— Owls have been associated with wisdom, foresight, messages, death, protection, intelligence, good and bad luck, secrets and dreams.

Artist Mark Bremer nestles into a light blue sofa in his sunny Southampton living room, motions to the room around him and declares, “This is my studio.”

A partially completed pencil drawing of a rabbit lies on the coffee table in front of him; on the side table is an array of hand-sharpened pencils in a stand he fashioned from wood. “It’s a porcupine,” he says light-heartedly about the half-sphere with pencils taking the place of quills.

Mark, 67, considers himself a newcomer to the art world. “I have difficulty using the word artist now and then,” he admits. He drew while young but he put drawing aside as his mechanical engineering career grew. He did his last hand drawings for work in the early 1990s. “For about 30 years, all my work has been on a computer.”

Mark did mechanical design work for firms specializing in high-precision optical components.

He did support engineering for testing the optics that fixed the Hubble Space Telescope’s flawed mirror, and he did early tooling work on the James Webb Space Telescope that will launch in 2018.

He also holds a patent for a mirror design that significantly reduces mounting-induced error in the optical surface.

With retirement looming, he resumed drawing in 2014. “I used to draw in my teens and 20s, but I never really liked what I do with color so I stick with pencil,” he says.

Mark had a show at the library earlier this year, his work is displayed at HQ Gallery downtown, his pieces have been selected for juried shows, and he’s sold some of his work. He was pleased to be asked this year to submit a piece for Arts Benicia’s annual art auction.

He retired two years ago. He now draws most days, creating meticulous pencil drawings of weathered fences, old latches, barnacles, plant—and even a rabbit. “The rabbit’s a bit of an experiment because it’s been a long time since I did an animal.”

The United Kingdom native settled in Benicia in 1987 with his wife, Muriel, and son. His daughter lives in the United Kingdom.

Mark Bremmer, Gate, Fort Ross

What led you to pick up drawing after decades away from it?

Drawing was something I enjoyed doing when I was young, so I started drawing again as something to do when I retired. I produced an awful lot of junk during the first year.

There was nothing I wanted to show anyone for about a year.

Then I was clearly getting better and better, but I still didn’t know if anything would come of it. I look at both the technical and general aesthetic in my drawings. Maybe I’m more critical of myself than others are. I see the flaws in the drawing that others don’t.

What training do you have in art?

I’ve never taken an art class beyond what was offered in school in the UK. In the UK, up until 14 years of age, art was a core subject in school so I was introduced to art then. I never really took any other classes.

How did you decide what to draw when you resumed?

I didn’t know what I was going to draw at first. Then I figured out I like drawing object-oriented subjects with textures. I enjoy that the most and do the best work on those. I prefer realistic drawings to abstracts.

I focus on things with texture. I like old things. … It’s a learning experience to figure out how to create that texture on paper. For me, every new drawing is a learning experience.

What objects inspire you?

Old wood is really great, rusty metal is really great. But to find them in an interesting subject that produces an aesthetic image—it’s a battle sometimes.

It’s work to find the right subjects. I typically don’t draw people. People are very hard to draw.

I’m drawing these (points to a completed drawing of a thistle and the unfinished rabbit drawing) because I can’t find anything else. I mess around for days trying to find something to draw.

Where do you look?

Anywhere and everywhere. We went to Pacific Grove, and I did a couple of rock drawings and shell drawings that turned out pretty well.

I work mostly from photographs because of how long it takes to complete a work. I’ve taken to taking a camera with me wherever I go, so if I see anything, I’ve got it.

How long does it take to complete a piece?

I’d probably guess that one (motioning to a drawing of a thistle leaf) took about 30 hours, drawing three to four hours a day.

Are there similarities between the precision needed in engineering and in your art?

To some level, but they’re very, very different. There’s certainly a lot of tedium involved. The last 15 to20 years of what I did (during his career) was design work. There’s precision involved, obviously, but it’s a totally different beast.

One of the things most people don’t understand is that you’ve got an optic that’s good to a quarter of a nanometer, but none of the equipment that makes it is that good (precise). So you have to test it until you know all the errors so you can subtract the errors and know what the real part is. That’s a different type of precision than art.

What do you get from drawing?

I’m finding a great reward in people enjoying my work.

They say, “Wow—you did that?” It’s very rewarding to hear that.

Are there local artists you connected with as you started this new part of life?

Yes, mostly through HQ Gallery.

Mike Kendall and Susan Street have been incredibly encouraging and supportive. Mike has been consistently there when I had something out there that I needed help with. Susan came to me and offered space in HQ—I didn’t go looking. They’ve been very supportive.

What do you do to relax?

I draw (chuckling quietly).

What’s next for you?

I have no idea. I’m looking for something to draw. Maybe we’ll take a trip to look for something to draw.

The final performance on stage was in college as a chorus girl in the musical BOTTG through donations, fundraising, advocacy and Half A Sixpence, where I sang and danced in a cast of 20. reestablishing the group's nonprofit status, and were recently elected to the board as treasurer and board Awkward, since I am not really a dancer or singer.

These experiences, along with seeing numerous alternate. Attending monthly meetings has been an eyelocal, Broadway and international shows, has given me opener. Producing two plays a year, the force behind a sense of real appreciation for live theatre.
