R

ecent rains and one loud clap of thunder, along with colorful leaves, have escorted October’s warmer days into the evening chills of mid-fall, my favorite time of year. My kitchen stove is seeing more action as salads have given way to heartier fare like red beans and rice, Louisiana style, a family favorite perfected by my mom after a brief stint in New Orleans during my childhood. I love fall’s transitions and the nesting instinct that accompanies shorter days, when Indian summer travels settle into a cozy sense of home, family and a feeling of community connectedness.

A shared sense of community is one of the benefits of a small town—and one that adds to a feeling of happiness. Did you know that Benicia is a “Happiness Hot Spot?” Adriene and Bruce Rockwell explore the term on page 16, in our feature about the top ten things Benicians are thankful for.

November also ushers in a different type of transition: choosing Benicia’s Photo by Lisa Duncan leaders at the highest levels of governance. On November 8, or by absentee ballot, the preferred method of 53.5% of the 17,572 registered voters as of press time, we will vote for candidates running for city treasurer, school board, city council and mayor. Absent state or national ballot issues, or any raging controversies other than ubiquitous budget

problems, Benicia’s election has all the potential of a low voter turnout. But if one of the hallmarks of living in a small town is happiness, surely another is that one person really can make a difference.

Every person in Benicia’s boundaries will be affected by our choices. There are philosophical differences between the candidates, and policy will be influenced by our decisions on Election Day: schools, business, budget, city planning and more. Who will we choose to lead us moving forward? Will we let voter apathy put the decisions into the hands of a small subset of our citizens?

In case you haven’t had a chance to attend forums or read-up on candidate positions, on page 20 we offer a mini-primer on each of the ten candidates who are vying for five seats, excluding the two candidates running for city treasurer. Voting is a conduit to connectedness— why not up your happiness quotient by helping to shape the future of your community?

Your pictures of what is known as the Crooks Mansion, circa 1950, show how historic properties can be restored and preserved. The National Register-listed house is one of the most beautiful and historical in Benicia. I am sure the house fell into disrepair when William and Fannie Crooks passed away in the 1950's and their daughter, Alice, lived in the house alone until the end of her life. Your Home Guest-ready

Put your best foot forward when it comes to hosting guests this holiday season. It’s all about making people feel welcome, and with a few simple tips you can create an atmosphere that will make guests comfortable even if you are short on space. Think through any special needs your guests may require, and have everything ready before they arrive. This should not be an arduous task— just a few simple touches will do the trick.

The basics

Put a robe and fresh towels out where guests can easily find them. This is especially important if bathrooms are shared. Make sure your bed linens are up to snuff. Pillows are an often-neglected afterthought in a guest bedroom—replace them as often as needed.

An extra blanket is always appreciated. Get creative with toiletries.

Place them in a basket or arrange them on a shelf or bathroom dish.

An unopened toothbrush, soap, lotion, washcloths and shampoo and conditioner are all that’s needed.

Get the coffee ready to brew and leave dishes, utensils and packaged or wrapped breakfast staples on the counter in case your guests are early risers. And unless they are on a special diet, a simple plate of pastries or bagels are sure to be appreciated.

The Extras

Want to impress your guests? It’s always nice offer a pair of disposable slippers they can pad around in mornings and evenings.

Leave a variety of the latest magazines on the nightstand, a candle with matches, and a fresh flower in a bud vase on the bathroom counter.

Going All Out

Pull out all the stops and give your guests the royal treatment with high thread-count sheets, down pillows, reading glasses and therapeutic eye pillows. Leave a basket of apples, packages of trail mix and bottled water on the dresser, along with a gift certificate and directions to your favorite local eatery in case you are still sleeping when they arise.

BONING UP on Turkey Lore Want to a chance to improve your luck? Who doesn’t in this languishing economy? Here’s a small tidbit that used to be part of the annual Thanksgiving ritual but has faded of late: turn your thoughts back to the method that may have roots as far back as ancient times— the wishbone.

Wishbone superstition is said to have been used in weather forecasting, to predict the future and even to dictate when countries would go to war. For the past two centuries, it has been predicted that wishes would be granted by the laying of hands on the unbroken bone, and somewhat later, by two people each grasping a side and pulling it apart. The person with the biggest part is supposed to get their wish. So if you think you have the advantage on getting the larger half, stake your claim early for the cooked, dried bone. Or take the less competitive route, and just put the thing in your hand and make your wish.

Wood or Plastic?

The Great Cutting Board Debate Continues

It’s the great cutting board debate of the 21st century— plastic or wood? In 1999 the FDA mandated use of plastic cutting boards in commercial food service. But proponents of wood boards cite a comprehensive UC Davis study that was conducted, according to Dean Clover, Ph.D., after having been informed that the FDA mandate had not been scientifically tested. The Davis study comes down in favor of wood for several reasons. They found that bacteria left on a wooden surface was drawn inside, where it was unable to reproduce and died within a few days. Proponents of plastic cite its non-porous nature as a means of more thorough disinfection. The clincher, found Clover and his associates, is that once a plastic board is scarred with knife marks, bacteria collects in the grooves and is much harder to remove. Wooden boards seem to contain an element of flexibility, so that knife slices generally part between the grain, rather than slicing through it, making it much more difficult to score the surface.

Practically speaking, plastic costs less and weighs less, but proponents of wood cite its longevity and popular history, claiming that a well-treated wooden board can last generations. And with food poisoning increasingly in the news, the care and cleaning of cutting boards takes on renewed importance.

In the home kitchen, wooden boards can be successfully disinfected with soap and hot water, and plastic boards scored with knife marks, in the dishwasher. Bleach also does the trick, or for a less harsh approach, vinegar and then hydrogen peroxide may be applied. Having a designated “raw meat” cutting board—and of course keeping the kitchen clean and dry—discourages the growth and spread of bacteria. B

Gary Winston When your child has a cold, what symptoms signal that it’s time to call or visit a doctor?

Pain—I think pain should be respected and addressed. Vomiting, also. If you’ve vomited a couple of times, call your doctor.

Fever, but that varies according to age.

In very young infants, under 3 months, call anytime fever is above 100.4. Under age 1, call if fever goes above 101 degrees.

Between 1 and 2, 102 degrees, and call at any age if fever is above 104.

Same advice if a youngster has the flu?

Now, flu is different. You’re sicker with flu. I think it’s really important to see those patients because of possible secondary infections. We see lots of pneumonia, and you can’t tell from just looking at a patient.

Parents can’t tell, either. If symptoms are significant, call your doctor. If your child is very lethargic, has pain, is vomiting, or has a very high fever, call your doctor.

The best preventative is to get a flu shot.

I think everyone should get one, especially people with children in the home who are under 3. If you have a baby under 6 months, they can’t be immunized, so everyone else in the house should be. Anyone with chronic diseases, or if there’s a child in preschool, kindergarten or first grade, should get a flu shot.

Anything parents should avoid if their child as a cold?

I was taught at Oakland Children’s Hospital that cough and cold medications don’t work, and I’ve always advised parents not to give them to their kids. And about 14 • Benicia Magazine

There’s even a term for these illness-prone years, says Dr. Gary Winston.

“In preschool, kindergarten and first grade, those ages are called the ‘reservoir of infection’ because kids sneeze on each other and they’re all over each other and they’re not great at hygiene,” says the Benicia pediatrician. “Studies show that in first grade, on average, they get sick once a month.”

Parents start calling when colds linger or flu strikes, and the number of calls jumps after children return to class following school breaks. “School started on a Wednesday this year and we stared getting patients the following Monday,” he says.

Dr. Winston, a pediatrician since 1977, knows the pattern well. And while many aspects of pediatric care have changed in 34 years of practice, the treatment of colds remains basically the same.

“I’ve seen lots of fads come and go—vitamin C and Zinc among them. If there was a real cure, we’d use it,” he says.

Dr. Winston, 62, co-founded North Bay Pediatrics with Dr. Alan Sher in 1984. A Benicia resident for more than 30 years, he and his wife, Susie, made the move to Santa Cruz two years ago after raising four daughters here. He now works part-time in the Benicia practice and plans to continue at least 10 more years because he enjoys what he does. “When I go on vacation, I miss working.”

Off-duty hours find Dr. Winston surfing, swimming, doing a little yoga, and reading. “I read all the time—mostly nonfiction, evolutionary biology and evolutionary psychology. And I read medical studies all the time,” he says with a grin. three years ago, a study came out showing that cold medications are contra-indicated for young children.

How do you stay healthy when treating so many children with cold and flu?

Running water and soap is the best way to stay healthy. I sing the ABC song—the long version—while I wash my hands to know how long to wash. I wash my hands a lot. Certainly between every patient, but if a child coughs on me, I wash my hands and face.

Are hand sanitizers effective?

Those sanitizers are relatively useless, unless they are all alcohol. Studies have shown the all-alcohol ones to be effective, but the ones that say they are germicides are not effective. Washing your hands with soap is the best.

What changes have you seen in pediatric medicine over the years?

A lot of things we used to put in a large, nondefined area—things like asthma. Now we have more knowledge and we’re able to tease out more details, so we can identify them better.

Another change is that we have better antibiotics. And we have better ways to deliver medicine, like inhalers. We’re able to use less medicine and get it more effectively to where it needs to be.

We have much better medicines for things like diabetes, we have better lab tests, and we have a better understanding of the disease process. Look at SIDS. It used to happen much more frequently, and now we know that if you put your baby on his

back, it cuts down dramatically on the risk, unless there’s a smoker in the house. Oh, we’ve learned how bad smoking is, how bad second-hand smoking is. …

The treatment and understanding of ADHD is also much better, and those changes have been real lifesavers for some kids.

Do you remember your own pediatrician?

Dr. Etra. I think he saved me. I was a first child, and I think he took my anxious parents and backed them off a bit.

I’ve always like pediatricians as a group.

It’s easier to be a nice person when you’re working with kids. I think they help keep me healthy.

What do you wish you’d known when you decided to become a doctor?

I wish I’d known about the paradox between what society says about kids and the way they treat them. We say we love children, we value children, but we don’t put money into programs that make a real difference in children’s lives. Day care, education, college—these things are so important for kids and teens, and they aren’t funded.

Would you make the same recommendations for adults as for your pediatric patients?

I have no knowledge about adult medicine (laughing). I’ve made the worst misdiagnoses on myself. I’ve missed every one. B

One mayor, two City Council members, two School Board trustees— and 10 candidates for the five openings. Benicia voters will decide Tuesday, Nov. 8, who will lead our community for the next four years. Voters have plenty of material to consider: statements on web sites, fliers delivered to homes, candidate forums played and replayed on local cable channels. It’s a lot to digest, so we cut to the chase and asked each candidate to respond to one question we’d all like answered:

What is your top priority for the city, and how do you plan to address it?

Economic development has been a top priority for a long time, and we need to take the draft Business Development Action Plan and implement the low-hanging fruit right away. That will create jobs and economic prosperity for the community and, in the short term, increase tax revenues to maintain the quality of life for Benicians. The first thing is to establish a web page that’s dedicated to economic development, specifically the Benicia industrial Park. That’s a way to recruit businesses. The long-term items include street repair, drainage, and the most important thing is high-speed broadband service, the most advanced, cutting-edge broadband available.

Maintaining a balanced budget and a 20 percent reserve by aggressively seeking efficiencies, reducing overtime, minimizing lawsuits, offering compensation that’s fair to employees and taxpayers, centralizing our purchasing, looking at contracting out for some services and having a pay-as-you-go policy. We can’t just cut our way to a stable budget. We need to focus on economic development and our biggest economic engine is the industrial park. We need to spend money on broadband and roads to make the industrial park competitive in the global market. The increased taxes will help us fix roads, assure the quality of public-safety services and maintain our quality of life.

A. Christina Strawbridge, 59, smallbusiness owner, Benicia resident from 1985-1989 and 1999-present Economic development is crucial to the city right now, and that’s my strength with my business background.

We need to find new revenue streams, be more business friendly. We also need to develop a campaign to shop locally, not only residents shopping locally, but also businesses shopping business-to-business locally. My other priority is saving our state capitol, our state parks. We can’t let the capitol get boarded up.

C. Tom Campbell, 61, orthodontist and incumbent councilman, 26 years in Benicia My top priority is establishing a stable, balanced budget. We’re almost there, but we cannot cut our way to a stable, balanced budget on a long-term basis.

With the latest cuts, we’ve got employee compensation at 67, 68 percent, so we’re at the same spot we were 10 years ago and 20 years ago. Now senior management can concentrate on ways to increase our revenue.

B. Dan Smith, 54, writer and health educator, 24 years in Benicia My top priority is to put a stop to city reductions in the partnership with the school district to maintain our ball fields. We revised the joint use agreement in 2005, and the city has rolled back several aspects of it. I’d like to restore field maintenance.

The condition of facilities matters for business recruitment, property values, and the safety of those who use the fields.

D. Rick Ernst, 60, insurance benefits coordinator, Benicia resident from 1988-2001 and 2005-present The budget certainly is my top priority.

I don’t think there’s anything else that’s as important as the budget, and we’ve got a budget that has a $1.7 million deficit, maybe over a $2 million deficit.

I’d address this by keeping employee compensation to 60 percent of the budget, by renegotiating contracts to include verbiage that says we can’t raise compensation unless we have the funds.

A. Matt Donahue, 22, student teacher, 17 years in Benicia My top priority is creating a comprehensive plan for education in the school district. Defining your goals and the anticipated outcomes of the education process, and saying what you’ll do to get there, will naturally lead to increases in collaboration between the community and the school district, plus lead to increased funding sources.

We can start by establishing a formalized process to utilize the expertise of our community.

B. Andre Stewart, 47, malpractice insurance senior vice president and incumbent trustee, 13 years in Benicia My top priority obviously is financial solvency. Beyond that, my priority is to incredibly vitalize our whole curriculum, including vocational education and the Pathway program. The way to get this done is to work with the Napa Solano Building Trades Council. I want these kids to get jobs. I’d love to include the middle school as well so middle school kids can see what options are available.

C. Bonnie Weidel, art educator and incumbent trustee, 33 years in Benicia I find it hard to limit it to one item, but I’d like to see an art and science resource center at each elementary school.

We’ve got room, we’ve got volunteers, we’ve got donated art supplies at each school, so we need to inventory them and provide equal access and resources so each teacher can utilize the center. I don’t think we need extra funds to start this.

Gary Wing, 50, electrical supervisor, 24 years in Benicia My top priority is to open communications back up between the board, to make the board more visible at the sites with the teachers, classified employees, parents and students. I’d like to do that by actually working on the school board goals that were established last September. I feel by working on those goals that the sites would feel like the board’s engaged with them. Ole’ red! to Spain and the color

By Christina Strawbridge Spain is a mysterious country of conquistadors, matadors, paella, the Holy Grail and the color red. A recent eight day visit to three cities began in Madrid. I arrived in Spain’s Capitol with a miserable head cold, complete with red nose and bloodshot eyes, which made the thirty-hour experience a blur. I do remember the beauty of the baroque architecture alongside modern skyscrapers, and roaming the enormous Parque del Retiro, full of sculptures, a Crystal Palace and a peaceful lake. We dined in one of city’s plazas on a meal of tapas, found on most menus throughout the country.

The temperature was hot and got hotter traveling to Seville. I had brought mostly lightweight fall clothes and several pairs of leggings, which I never wore due to the ninety degree heat. I ended up wearing a loose pair of black workout pants with my favorite tops and tunics.

The bullet train trip to Seville whizzed us by landscape similar to California along the Interstate 5 freeway, with miles of olive trees and flat, dry terrain, making me wonder where “The rain in

Spain falls mainly on the plain.” It became evident why the Spanish chose the Golden State to inhabit and develop since it must have reminded them of home.

Seville is an ancient city dating back over 2000 years, and in mythology was thought to be founded by Hercules. Remains of the Roman aqueducts and Gothic and Moorish architecture are evident.

My favorite find was the tomb of Christopher Columbus in the Seville Cathedral. His remains are shouldered by the four kings of Castile, Leon, Aragon and Navarre. As I circled this impressive monument to the famous explorer, it struck me that as an American, I may not be standing here if it hadn’t been for Columbus and his successful trips to the New World.

Another experience I had in Seville was attending a bull fight. As we purchased tickets in front of the brick arena, I thought of the matadors and their intricate brocade costumes, colored socks, flat shoes and of course, the red cape. I decided that red was probably not the color to wear to a bull fight, and tried to blend in with a taupe duster and harem pants.

A bullfight, or corrida de toros, is something enjoyed and loathed by visitors and Spaniards alike. Bullfighting is a tradition in Seville and the Plaza de Toros de la Maestranza is perhaps one of the best venues in all of Spain to watch the event.

entered the Plaza along with a parade of horses. When the bull is let loose there is an eerie silence as the spectators watch the matador challenge the animal to charge with almost dancelike leg work. As the bull goes for the red cape, ole’ is cheered until the animal meets its death. Our culture wouldn’t allow such brutality to an animal, and after the first few fights we decided that we’d had enough of that particular Spanish experience.

Our last leg of the trip was in Valencia, a beautiful city on the Mediterranean Sea known for oranges and paella.

Because we were there attending a meeting on energy conservation, tours were offered to see the old city, as well as an architectural tour which included the City of Arts and Sciences. There are three large structures that include an opera house, the largest aquarium in Europe and an interactive science museum. The four block complex is the most amazing array of modern architecture that I have ever seen.

Valencia architect Santiago Calatrava also designed the Milwaukee Art Museum, and is currently working on the World Trade Center Transportation Hub at Ground Zero.

Our final day in Spain took us to the cathedral of Saint Mary of Valencia where the Holy Grail is supposedly displayed. The Chalice has been traced to St. Peter, and legend states it held Christ’s blood at the Crucifixion.

Seeing the reddish stone vessel was remarkable, as was the eight days in a country of rich cultural and historical significance. On our last night I wore my ruffled red duster to dinner as a symbolic olé to Spain. B

Early Benicia Transportation

By Beth Steinmann Robert Semple was a grand architect and founding father of Benicia. His was a metropolitan vision, including ferry service between Benicia, Martinez and Port Costa.

Though the realization of this dream had humble roots, he may not have guessed that Benicia was destined to house the largest ferry ever built. Circa 1848, the ferry was said to sustain but 6 to 8 horses, and its passengers experienced up to twoday waits in line. Semple himself almost drowned after constructing a makeshift raft and attempting to cross from Martinez to Benicia when he could not attract the attention of his ferryman who was waiting on the other shore. As the transportation demand grew, so did the boats. By 1868, tracks had been laid around the bay and the great railroad companies had moved in, competing for the quickest route between Sacramento and Oakland. The original route was circuitous, passing through Stockton and over the Altamont Pass before swooping back north to Oakland.

The Central Pacific set out to connect a line from Sacramento to Benicia through the Suisun Marsh, but had to fill beneath the tracks with tons of granite to counteract the “sinking marsh effect.”

Meanwhile, one Mr. Arthur Brown was rapidly constructing the railroad’s “piece de triumph,” the lynchpin of the new route, at an Oakland shipyard. The 420ft long (longer than a football field!) ferry was built to house a 24-car passenger train. Mr. Robert L. Harris, a civil engineer, described the voyage with reverence in 1890: “At about 30 miles from the terminus there is a stop of a minute, a start followed by a pause of about five minutes, when [the passenger] feels that in some way his motion has changed, and, going to the car platform, discovers that while he is still on the cars, the entire train is on a boat, which is crossing the Straits of Carquinez.”

Dubbed “The Solano,” the boat embarked on her maiden voyage on December 28, 1879, connecting Benicia to the Central Pacific Railroad. The journey

from the bottom of First Street to the tracks in Port Costa took about 15 minutes.

One passenger reflected, “I passed back and forth at this ferry several times; at each time the perfection of its operation challenged admiration.”

The Solano’s success was so complete that similar models were constructed for the crossing from Oakland to San Francisco, and in 1885 a sister ship, the Contra Costa, was added to her ranks.

Together, these august vessels raised enough money over the next 40 years to put themselves out of business. In 1928 the Southern Pacific (which had consumed the Central Pacific) approved $12 million for the construction of the BeniciaMartinez Bridge, which was completed in 1930, and has remained in continuous operation since.

The Contra Costa was unceremoniously deconstructed and sold for scrap, while The Solano was laid to rest near Antioch, where bits of its skeleton are still visible above the water line. B
