ix Benicia-based charities were among the 26 charities that shared in grants totaling $300,000, as announced at the annual Valero Benefit for Children awards breakfast.

Representatives from Benicia Ballet Theatre, Benicia Community Action Council, Benicia Education Foundation, Benicia Historical Museum, Benicia Little League and VOENA were on hand to accept grants at the October 26 event, held at the Benicia Veterans Memorial Building.

Members of Benicia Boy Scout Troop 7 opened the Awards Breakfast with the Presentation of the Colors and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Attendees were treated to a special performance by an ensemble of the VOENA children’s choir.

Since 2001, the Benicia Refinery, through the Valero Energy Foundation, has awarded nearly $5 million to local nonprofits specifically through the Benefit for Children grant process.

Valero employees nominated the charities. An all-employee committee reviewed the nominations and made the selections.

Valero’s business partners play a critical role in the success of this annual grant awards event because they participate in, and sponsor, the Benefit for Children Golf Classic Tournament, held on the heels of the annual PGA TOUR Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

Together, the 2016 tournaments raised a record $10.5 million for charity. Dollars raised through these events are distributed to locations where Valero has operations, like Benicia, to provide grants to charities helping children.

Approximately 25% of the City of Benicia’s General Fund Revenue comes from the Valero Benicia Refinery.

From tugboats to bee keeping, our 2016 feature stories ran the gamut. It’s fun to look back and see cover photos on bird watching, backyard harvests, scenic hikes, festivals and more. For over 11 years Benicia Magazine has focused on one goal: to bring people together, to appreciate each other and all of Benicia’s exceptional assets. That appreciation has lead to pride of place that wasn’t quite as apparent back in 1983 when Mike and I moved here. But many wonderful improvements later, our live-ability score is high, as touted in numerous local and national publications over the past decade. Feeling safe, knowing your neighbors and building lifelong friendships are at the top of that list.

Having moved many times across the country the first half of my life, as interesting as that was for a painfully shy, native Californian, it was hard to develop a sense of place, let alone make friends.

Raising a family here, getting involved in community service and publishing Benicia magazine has allowed me to connect with our community on a much deeper level. You can search all the towns around the bay, but there’s nothing like the quiet respite that is Benicia, combined with scenic beauty, significant art, impressive history, cultural events and the many other resources we enjoy

I was inspired by the general theme of the answers—and full of gratitude for living in such an remarkable town where respect and empathy are common. December is full of promise, if we continue to model kindness, tolerance and acceptance, holding dear to Benicia’s anchor of small town values.

By Sarah Rohrs Photos by Jennifer Payne The annual lighting of the city’s holiday tree is a Benicia tradition not to be missed, even if it’s cold, windy and raining outside. Regardless of the weather, scores of revelers gather at the First Street waterfront to watch as the switch is turned and the large tree twinkles and glows with thousands of lights. The tree lighting ceremony dates back decades with different trees and different locations around the downtown, though the intent to herald in the season remains the same.

This year, there will be one key difference. The official holiday tree is new and slightly different. The former was replaced over the summer with a variety that can withstand the waterfront’s windy conditions better, said Rick Knight, city superintendent of parks & building maintenance. A few years ago, the tree nearly fell over in a storm. The

n city pulled it back and secured it with cables, but it never fully recovered and drought conditions weakened it more, Knight said. The new tree is a 20-foot Carolina Sapphire Cypress, a native to California that the city purchased for $4,500 at a nursery in Gilroy. “We’re excited we were able to find a tree this size and as healthy as it is. We also installed a new irrigation system and we have some ventilating tubes to help with the brackish water,” Knight said.

For more than two decades, the previous evergreen tree was a faithful presence. A community member gave it to the city when lower First Street was raised and underwent improvements. Years ago, the holiday tree was in a portion of Eunice Jensen Park that now holds the Benicia Public Library. Then a tree in City Park held the honors. Knight said the aim was that people would gather at the top of the street and then walk down and visit the shops, though sometimes people would go home after the tree was lit. These days, the tree lighting ceremony at the waterfront serves as a lure to draw people down First Street and participate in the evening’s events. “We want them to walk downtown and enjoy the holiday atmosphere,” he said.

Enjoyment is the key, and the city also wants all of the community to participate in festivities regardless of their background. Originally

BIO called the city’s “Christmas tree” the name was changed to “holiday tree” to encourage inclusion of all traditions. Many cities have taken similar steps as a way to assure everyone is welcome, and also because the December holiday season marks more than the Christmas holiday. The month also includes Hanukkah, Kwanza, the Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and the Winter Solstice, among others.

Following the tree lighting, the Holiday Open House, sponsored by the city and Benicia Main Street, unfolds as First Street merchants stay open late for shopping and offer cookies and hot cider.

This year’s evening festivities start at 6pm on Friday, Dec. 2, with the tree lighting at 6:30pm. Carolers dressed in period costume and horse-drawn carriage rides add to the festivities. The historic Benicia State Capitol is also lit up, decorated and open for tour while Benicia High School band plays on the lawn. This year, the adjacent Fischer Hanlon House will be decorated but not open to the public.

Seasonal merriment can be found all month with elaborate holiday yard displays throughout town and other merriment. A perennial favorite is the Christmas Parade & Holiday Market that starts 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 10. A parade of local marching bands and dancers launches at First and D streets and goes to H Street. A holiday market follows between B and D streets. On that day, Santa Claus will be at the Fischer Hanlon House to take children’s wishes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Next door at the State Capitol, docents will help people make Victorian tree ornaments. Throughout the month, First Street merchants do elaborate storefront displays, and people can be spotted bustling around looking for gifts or meeting friends and loved ones at cafes and restaurants. As evening falls, the trees light up and are so pretty to look at.

“It’s very magical on First Street in December,” said Nancy Martinez, Benicia Main Street executive director.

By Adriene Rockwell, photo by Malcolm Slight Photo: Mark Eanes, by Malcolm Slight The path to becoming a professional artist was both circumstantial and revelatory for Mark Eanes, an Associate Professor at the California College of the Arts who lives with his wife Marija and dog Georgia in his live-work studio in Benicia’s historic Arsenal.

Mark is happiest when he’s at work in his studio getting lost in the moment.

“I love being in the studio, and I thrive on the act of doing,” says Mark. “I love making messes, and then making sense of it; bringing order to chaos until I find that angle of repose.

Until it sits there beautifully, and I say ‘there, it’s done.’ I like those moments.”

Mark was born in Indiana then moved to Virginia with his three siblings at the age of 13. When he graduated from high school, he says he was “literally aimless.” It was a generous uncle who flew him out to California and encouraged him to think about college. Without any other plan, Mark had always kept a sketchpad, so art school seemed like a fine idea.

He went on to receive an AA degree in Fine Arts from Canada College in Redwood City, a BFA from U.C. Santa Barbara in 1974, and an MFA from Mills College in 1984.

The revelatory part of his journey came after he earned his BFA and was working as a hotel clerk at Best Western in San Francisco. He’d saved his money to travel to Europe and study the great artists. For five months he filled his sketchbooks until he had the revelation that he didn’t want to be an artist, he needed to be an artist. It was going to be his life.

In addition to his renowned work in drawing, painting and photography, Mark is a full time Associate Professor of illustration, painting and drawing at the California College of the Arts. He also enjoys guest curating, and teaching regionally at Arts Benicia, the Mendocino Art Center, and the Walnut Creek Civic Center. Mark says he’s always informed by his students, and speaks fondly of his work at the California State Summer School for the Arts where he taught teens for 12 summers, and served as the Chair of the department for three years.

For those of us exploring our inner artists, he suggests: “The creative urge can manifest in so many ways, it can manifest in how you put a salad together, or it can be a way of navigating life. But if you really want a taste of something, you have to put in the time. There’s a reason why we call the arts the disciplines.”

By Elizabeth d’Huart, Executive Director, BHM Photo courtesy Benicia Historical Museum A marvelously detailed print of Benicia’s College of St. Augustine (circa 1867) forms the cover of this Christmas card, an appropriate image for the Kinnaman family as it illustrates their family home as it looked when built as part of the original College.

Situated in the foreground on the left-hand side of the picture, the house boasts a large bay window, side porch and balcony. The assembly of uniformed college cadets seen here supplies the human element and serves to provide scale in what is essentially an architecturallyoriented composition, as does the lady with her young charges and the two men taking their ease on the grass, the whole rendered in a slightly stiff and charmingly naïve style.

The empty hills stretching back to the horizon underscore the significance of such a sophisticated and substantial academic outpost in what was still a relatively unpopulated territory. The grounds of

the school were quite extensive, some 60 acres, and were laid out and decorated “… with flowers, ornamental trees and shrubbery.” From The History of Solano County I have learned that the College compound included several dormitories, a dining hall, a chapel, an Armory with gymnasium attached, and a large building “Erected for the Eulexian Literary and Dramatic Society,” plus the parade grounds. Imagining this wonderful complex, the cadets dressed in grey and red, I am quite overcome by the loss of this stately beauty and important landmark. Members of the Kinnaman clan still reside at 36 Wingfield Way. I’m sure they especially appreciate the holiday sentiment composed by their relatives many Christmases ago. It reads: May the meaning of Christmas be deeper, its friendship stronger, its hopes brighter, as it comes to you this year.

A Holiday Teddy Bear Tea Party

By Beth Steinmann Maryellen Hayes, owner of Camellia Tea Room, has been producing annual Teddy Bear Tea Parties for 21 years. These formal affairs include a special traditional afternoon tea, costumed elves and holiday characters, story telling by Mr. Hayes himself, Christmas carols and a special visitor from the North Pole. Proceeds from the six seatings benefit Benicia Main Street, which the Hayes’ have been involved with since its inception. “It’s a family affair,” says Maryellen, recalling her own grandkids’ participation over the years as elves and special helpers. Kids bring their favorite teddy or stuffed animal to enjoy the fancy tea and festivities. This year’s Teddy Bear Tea takes place December 3 & 4 at Camellia Tea Room and advance registration is required. Recognizing Benicia’s History with

Indeed, prominent buildings are like cast members standing proudly on stage, telling the town’s story. Time has lent these structures historic significance, and over the past few decades, state and federal agencies have also recognized their stature, placing them in the National Register of Historic Places spotlight. “There’s just all the prestige with the designation, and financial benefits to go out and get restoration grants that come with the designation,” said Jerry Hayes, Benicia Historical Society vice president and former mayor.

Benicia has nine buildings, areas and structures listed. A tenth one, the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot, is in the works. Getting a building placed on the National Register of Historic Places is often a long and difficult task. Just ask David Hyde, a University of California at Berkeley doctoral candidate in archeology, with a big love of both history and his hometown of Benicia. A Benicia Historical Society board member since 2014, Hyde threw himself into the effort to get the Von Pfister Adobe placed on the register, something the society has wanted to do since the 1970s. Popular lore is that news of the discovery of gold was announced at the Von Pfister Adobe, sparking the California Gold Rush of 1848. Today, the old structure is in a protected area between C and D streets on Von Pfister Alley off First Street, awaiting hopedfor restoration.

Often, tenacity is the key to success.

Hyde said he rewrote a prior unsuccessful application for the Von Pfister Adobe from the ground up, and learned to navigate the state and bureaucratic process.

He also engaged in many conversations and correspondence with the state historian assigned to the application. He soon learned historical significance is not enough.

The building has to be significant in specific ways and also fall under one of four criteria. A structure can be associated with a historically significant event or trend, a prominent person, or be representative of an architectural style. It can also have potential to answer questions about a period of history. Hyde highlighted the Von Pfister Adobe’s contributing role in Benicia’s early history and development. A State Historic Preservation Office historian reviewed the final paperwork and forwarded the request to the National Park Service, which administers the National Register of Historic Places program. Finally, in 2015, the Von Pfister Adobe got placed. It’s hoped the designation will help with securing grants to restore the aging wooden structure.

In the 1970s, the late Gladys Wold, co-founder of the Benicia Historical Society, engaged in a similar process. She co-authored the nomination application for the entire Benicia Arsenal. The historic area dates back to 1849, covers 440 acres and includes 23 buildings, including the Camel Barns, Commandant’s Residence, Guard House, Post Hospital, and the Clock Tower.

The Depot, at the foot of First Street, could soon be the next

Benicia structure on the list. Hyde applied what he learned through the Von Pfister Adobe application process to the Depot, which state historians are now considering. The city has played a role, too, reviewing the application and submitting it to the Benicia Historic Preservation Review Commission. Since the city owns the Depot, the city council signed off on it as well. No other Benicia buildings are in the pipeline, but Hayes said he is interested in nominating First Street as a district, along with its buildings.

Today, the Depot, found at the foot of First Street adjacent to the First Street Green and waterfront, is partially restored. A portion of the first floor houses the offices of Benicia Main Street, along with its retail store and information center. From the early 1900s through 1930s, the Depot served as Benicia’s main passenger and freight station, and also as a staging area for a busy ferry network, until the train bridge, now under the Benicia Martinez Bridge, was built. The city restored and stabilized the Depot in 1999 after it had sat vacant for decades.

Designation does not guarantee buildings will be saved. In the 1990s, the privately-owned 1850s-era brick Carr House on East D Street was demolished, though it is still listed on the register. Other structures are no longer in Benicia. When it was anchored in the

Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, the Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O’Brien was added in 1978. The ship is now at Pier 45 in San Francisco. Another can be seen only at low tide. The Stamboul Whaling Bark Site at 12th Street Park along the Carquinez Strait was once part of the Matthew Turner Shipyard, serving as a work platform to build wooden sailing ships in the late 1800s. Other buildings on the register still stand, including the 1850-era Benicia Masonic Lodge at 110 West J Street, and the 1890s-era Crooks Mansion on West Third Street. The Fischer-Hanlon House and Benicia State Capitol, both part of the Benicia Capitol State Historic Park on West G Street off First Street, are also on the register.

Benicia’s importance on the historic stage engenders local pride, and lends a certain fascination to residents and visitors alike. Its markers and iconic buildings are thought-provoking reminders of its early heyday—shining a light on Benicia’s prominent place in California history.

By Sarah Rohrs When people in the Bay Area say it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, chances are pretty good they’re not talking about the presence of snow and ice, given our mild climate. But the opportunity to enjoy a slice of winter wonderland is not too far away. Outdoor rinks with real, frozen ice can be found throughout the region, namely, in Martinez, Walnut Creek, Oakland, Alameda, Vacaville and San Francisco. Seasonal (and permanent) ice skating rinks can help to kindle a holiday mood, and offer a chance to establish new traditions.

DC Solar Downtown Holiday Ice in downtown Martinez is closest to Benicia, and open every day, even Christmas and New Year’s Day, through Jan. 8. This is the rink’s second year. “The first year was fabulous so we’re going to do it all again,” said Leanne Peterson, Main Street Martinez executive director. “It’s unique. … and it’s good for all ages. Families really enjoy coming together. The holidays are all about traditions and this gives people a chance to set new ones.” Admission prices range from $10 to $14 per person, depending on hours, days and size of group. Ice skates are also available to rent. Piped in holiday music and theme nights, such as Ugly Holiday Sweater Night, add to the fun. Peterson said the downtown ice rink is something the city has been working toward for at least a decade. A firm called DC Solar, formerly of Martinez and now set up in the Benicia Industrial Park, provided the bulk of the start-up money and is now a key sponsor. PG&E helps subsidize the energy costs. The 50- by 80-foot rink is at the corner of Marina Vista Avenue and Ferry Street.

Walnut Creek on Ice is another Contra Costa County rink set up right downtown. Located at Civic Center Drive and Broadway, Walnut Creek on Ice is in its 12th season and open daily through Jan. 16. Prices vary depending on hours and days, with skate rentals available. In Alameda, The Little Ice Rink operates at the Alameda South Shore Center, and can be used by skaters of all levels and 20 • Benicia Magazine

skills. It runs through Jan. 8, and like other rinks, prices and hours vary. Skates can also be rented.

If skating in a big city setting is preferred, two urban holiday skating rinks can be found in downtown San Francisco, both near public transportation. In the heart of Union Square is the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink, open daily through Jan. 16. The Holiday Ice Rink at Embarcadero Center is one of the largest outdoor ice rinks in the Bay Area. The setting is the Justin Herman Plaza, adjacent to Four Embarcadero Center across from the Ferry Building; an easy walk to the rink after disembarking from the Vallejo ferry. The rink is open through Jan. 8; prices and hours vary. Skate rentals are available at both. Another NHL-sized facility, the Yerba Buena Ice Skating Center is San Francisco’s only year round, full service ice skating facility. It’s open daily, including holidays, with public skating available almost every day. Prices vary with skate rentals available.

Heading east, Vacaville Ice Sports offers two National Hockey League-sized ice rinks that host skating and events year round.

Public ice skating is available, as is figure skating and hockey in addition to other programs, including special holiday programs.

Oakland Ice is a year-round ice center and offers ice hockey, figure skating, broomball, curling, speed skating and ice dancing, as well as a schedule for public skating. Located between San Pablo Ave. and Telegraph, Oakland Ice is operated by Sharks Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the San Jose Sharks NHL team. The facility provides two rinks—one is NHL-size, the other, Olympic size.

Other Bay Area ice rinks will be available this season in Napa and Marin counties, but were not open as of our print deadline. They are listed below. Regardless of their size or the location, ice rinks offer a less typical kind of family fun than we are used to, and the opportunity to glide through the holidays enjoying a “real” winter experience, if only temporarily.

One boy’s hand shot up and he earnestly asked Mike, “Were you here when all these things were happening?”

Mike chuckles at the memory, one of many from his time volunteering with Benicia non-profit organizations. Many of his favorites involve spending time with children—but that’s not always the case. Judging the Main Street Halloween costume contest is tough, he says.

“I enjoy that, but it’s a lot of pressure. You have all these cute kids in these great costumes. I’m glad there are other judges.”

HOW DO YOU SELECT THE ORGANIZATIONS YOU WORK WITH?

Certainly in the case of tourism, it was a natural fit.

If I hear of an organization that I’m interested in, I’ll read about it and see if I can do something to help. Sometimes the organization picks me—like the museum and Main Street. With Human Services, it was about helping the needy, helping the less fortunate in Benicia.

WHAT PARTS OF YOUR VOLUNTEER WORK DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST?

I love doing school tours at the museum. It’s usually third-or fourth-graders.

The children are well behaved in general and have very good questions.

We meet downstairs and I lead them upstairs. There was a third-grade girl on recent tour and when we got to the top of the stairs, her eyes just opened up and she said, “I love museums.” She was just in awe. It almost brought tears to my eyes.

With the Tourism Committee, I enjoy helping host travel writers and giving them tours of Benicia.

With Main Street, I love the festivals and parades. I was a volunteer at all of those before I joined the board. I like to do the pours at the wine walks and the brew crawl and talk to people about Benicia. I was thrilled when Nancy (Martinez) asked me to join the board.

With Human Services, my time as liaison to the Child Assault Prevention Program was my favorite part. They work on anti-bullying programs with young children. I also like serving at the community Thanksgiving meal that the CAC (Community Action Council) puts on every year.

But the best is certainly the school tours, both at the museum and the capitol.

HOW MANY HOURS A WEEK DO YOU VOLUNTEER?

It varies. Maybe two days a week, so 12 to 16 hours a week if you include the board meetings and committee meetings.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO VOLUNTEER?

When you’re fully retired, it’s important to keep busy. I’m going to be 73 in January, and I have all the aches and pains that go with being that age. Keeping busy keeps me from focusing on all those aches and pains, and I like the people I work with.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE TO TRAVEL?

We love going to France, and Normandy is our favorite region—I’m a World War II buff. Also, this isn’t the primary reason we like going there, but I can get by in French. I’m not fluent, but I studied it in high school. We love Paris—how can you not love Paris?

We also love Italy. That would have to be our second favorite. One time we rented a farmhouse in Tuscany on a hillside and at the base of the mountain was a little village. We could see the lights come up in the evenings and hear the church bells while we had wine on the patio.

Parks Association. He served on the Benicia Human Services board off and on for 16 years before leaving the board this fall. Mike’s dedication earned him the city’s Volunteer of the Year award in 2015.

Mike’s volunteer activities have their roots in his career in the travel industry and his love of Benicia. “Don’t we all love Benicia?” he asks.

Mike spent 45 years in the travel industry, starting as a travel agent and working his way up to executive positions with AAA and with a consortium of small- to medium-sized travel agencies. In addition to his many volunteer posts in town, Mike is executive director of the international Skal organization’s San Francisco club. “It’s the closest thing the travel industry has to the Rotary Club,” he explains.

Mike is praised by those who work with him. “He is always the first to sign up to help, and he always follows through,” says Nancy Martinez, executive director of Benicia Main Street. “He’s low-key, charming, and he has quite a lot of stories from his years in the travel industry.

He’s a great ambassador for Benicia and Benicia Main Street. I have so much respect for the man.”

Certainly baseball—I’ve been an Oakland A’s season ticket holder for 28, 29 years. In 2007, when I was 63, I went to Oakland A’s fantasy camp. We go to 25 games every year.

We even went to a couple of Giants games this year as well.

I enjoy cooking a little bit and entertaining. We like to drive up to Napa.

We haven’t gone on any major trips in a long time. It’s time to start doing more travel again, even some road travel. We’ve talked often about driving up the entire Pacific Northwest.

We’re hoping to go back to France next year, maybe combine the trip with a river cruise. We want to take some cruises, but not on a mega-ship. We’d like to do some small-ship cruising.

Train Travel Intrigue

By Christina Strawbridge Train travel in Europe can be romantic and mysterious.

Our destination was Venice from Paris, changing trains in Milan. Gare de Lyon is a bustling Paris station that handles about 90,000,000 passengers each year, with destinations to the South of France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Italy.

The station was built for the Paris World Exposition of 1900 and exhibits the architecture of the time. I once dined in the famous Le Train Bleu restaurant that overlooks the tracks, and has been serving Parisians and travelers since 1901. Its over-the-top interior of gilding, frescoes and ornate chandeliers, is a must see. You wouldn't be alone in your choice; it has attracted the likes of Coco Chanel, Bridgett Bardot and Colette and has been the backdrop of films based in the French Capitol.

Europe’s large digital reader boards deliver track and destination information within minutes (yes minutes) of departure. It's fascinating to watch heads raised in unison and the mad dash to locate the correct car. Space is limited, so once on the train it's another issue to find a spot for luggage, and overhead compartments are too small to fit anything of substance. We travel with duffel bags on rollers that squeeze into tight spaces.

The French and Italian countryside whirls by as the speedy train makes its way to Milan. There is a sense of amazement as you cross fields, rivers and ancient castles hidden in the distance. I romanticize about who lived in these remote areas so very long ago. How different their lives were, where truth and chivalry were more defined—there was a time when you knew who the good guys and the bad guys were.

to prepare for the dash to the Venice train. As Scott took charge of our luggage, a female passenger approached our car, struggling to hoist her suitcases up the stairs. Noticing that she was traveling alone, we managed to help her onboard and stow her bags.

An hour outside of Venice, I overheard the same woman conversing with a group of young women about why she was traveling to Venice. Deborah Lipstadt is an American historian, a professor of modern Jewish history and Holocaust studies at Emory University and an author.

Her book, History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier, was made into a movie called Denial, recently released in the US, starring Rachel Weisz as Lipstadt, Tom Wilkinson as Richard Rampton and Timothy Spall playing David Irving. The movie is based on the legal battle for Lipstadt’s historical interpretation against David Irving, who accused her of libel when she declared him a Holocaust denier. The trial is set in London, where the English system, in cases of libel, the burden of proof is on the accused. It was up to Lipstadt's legal team to prove Irving knew he was lying in claiming the Holocaust did not occur. Since its release September 2016, the movie has received critical acclaim from USA Today, who said that Denial is a siren call for the truth. The New York Observer called Denial one of the most powerful and riveting courtroom dramas ever made.

Between the noise from the wheels on the track, Scott's snoring and the occasional train whistle, I was in rapt attention, hearing about this woman and her mission of truth.

Upon arriving at the Venice station, I looked for Lipstadt to offer help disembarking, but she had disappeared with her story and her suitcase in a magical city that has not changed much through time.

Christmas Tree Lot at the Museum

12/1-12/23, 10am-7pm daily Stone Hall at Benicia Historical Museum 2060 Camel Road, Benicia The Historical Museum’s Christmas tree lot features large selections of species and sizes, assistance in choosing and securing trees, plus candy canes, coloring pages and free Museum passes to all who purchase. Children also have an opportunity to send a letter to Santa via Cally, the museum carousel camel, who comes to life after midnight to deliver letters to Santa's North Pole workshop. Trees can be taken or delivered.

Refreshments and awards will take place on the main dock in front of the marina office upon the return of parade participants.
