The dead of winter isn’t always the best time to hit the ground running with strict goals and new routines, so I’d like to encourage you to use these remaining months of slow, foggy mornings to get curious about what your 2026 goals and practices could be. Try out some new hobbies and routines, check out a few books from our library that cover topics you’ve felt drawn to recently, and when spring blooms, you’ll have a clearer sense of what will truly serve you in the year ahead.

We’ve attempted to center this January issue around that playful exploration of curiosity, highlighting ways to test out new hobbies, search for the fitness studio that fits you best, dive into topics that widen your sense of wonder, and settle into new practices of self-care.

Foggy mornings and early sunsets are better suited to gentler days filled with warm beverages, slower starts, and steady progress toward small, sustainable goals.

That said, New Year’s resolutions remain a beloved tradition. With that in mind, we’ve grouped together a few of our regular columns, plus some bonus resolution resources, to encourage growth and evolution without getting too serious or restrictive.

And when it comes to fitness, we are spoiled—in the best way.

To see it for myself, I set out on a one-week challenge: visit gyms and studios across Benicia, take classes, and experience what makes each space special. (Yes, it was a lot of sweating.)

What I found wasn’t just variety—it was community, built by owners who are deeply invested in the people who walk through their doors.

This is what supporting local looks like: real stories, real relationships, and real places that make Benicia feel like home.

Meet the owners behind Benicia’s fitness community

gym to reflect what he’s building: a true community hub.

BCHFC serves a broad mix of residents—from young teens to seniors—and offers over 30,000 square feet of equipment and space, plus 50+ weekly classes for all ages and abilities.

Michael describes it as more than a gym: a gathering place where the positive vibe hits you the moment you walk in.

Benicia Fitness — Héctor Zavala Héctor Zavala is the owner and operator of Benicia Fitness, and his personal story is grounded in resilience. He grew up in a migrant farmworker family, moving constantly, adapting early, and learning discipline the hard way. He took ownership of Benicia Fitness in August 2025, with a goal of transforming it into a community-driven hub for Benicia.

His leadership style is simple and direct: consistency over perfection, and a culture that feels personal—not corporate.

“It’s not corporate — it’s community.”

The Elevate Company — Dr. Laura Mary Linsley Dr. Laura Mary Linsley is the Founder and CEO of The Elevate Company—and her background blends science, education, and movement. Elevate opened in August 2022, after years of building the concept and deepening her expertise in biomechanics and anatomy.

Her “why” is clear and personal: “To empower and inspire you to realize your potential to elevate the world.” And Elevate reflects that mission in its wide range of offerings—classes from kids yoga to gentle yoga, plus strength-based options like yoga with weights, and programs that support growth beyond the mat.

Benicia Community Health & Fitness Club — Michael Boyle Michael Boyle is the Owner and General Manager of Benicia Community Health & Fitness Club, and his story reads like a love letter to Benicia. After years in sports and fitness leadership, he stepped into ownership on June 1, 2024—and renamed the

Jazzercise Benicia — Leslie Rowley Leslie Rowley is the franchise owner and a FitPro at Jazzercise Benicia, and her roots in this town run deep. She began teaching Jazzercise in Benicia in 1988, opened a studio space in 1994, and launched the current studio in May 2000.

Her mission is more than fitness: it’s empowerment— especially creating a supportive environment for women at every stage of their wellness journey. And she makes an important point that reflects the best of Benicia: local fitness isn’t about competing; it’s about collectively creating space for more people to get healthier.

around town | Community The Training Loft — Denise Brazeal Denise Brazeal is the owner, trainer, coach, and instructor at The Training Loft, which opened in April 2014. She believes the small-gym environment is “far superior” to large corporate fitness centers because connection matters—knowing the people who walk through your doors matters.

The Training Loft’s identity is built around qualified, certified trainers who see their work as meaningful and life-changing.

Copas Crew Fitness — Kelsey Katarina Copas Kelsey Katarina Copas, a Benicia native, opened Copas Crew Fitness on March 1, 2023, with a very specific vision: a place where people could move without feeling watched or judged—just supported.

The studio offers barre, yoga, cycle, and sculpt, designed to create a balanced cross-training routine of strength and cardio. But what she speaks about most is community—the way members become friends and chosen family.

A realtor’s real-world review What it felt like to take the classes

I’m a local realtor, but I’m also a local participant. I wanted to experience what residents feel when they walk into these spaces, so I went all in—classes, sweat, and all. Here’s my honest take:

The Training Loft High intensity with great energy—and I loved that you can still access the weight room even during class times. If you want a class that “kicks you in the butt,” this is the gym for you.

Copas Crew Fitness Small studio, strong energy. You schedule ahead, but there’s usually room. The variety (yoga, spin, barre, sculpt) keeps it fun—and what really keeps you coming back is the people and how it starts to feel like family.

The Elevate Company I’ll admit it—I used to think yoga was mostly “zen” and not a real workout. Elevate changed that fast. I sweated more here than in many other classes, and the sculpt yoga with weights builds serious strength and core. Scheduling ahead is needed, and it’s worth it.

Jazzercise Benicia So fun it doesn’t even feel like “the gym.” You show up, you dance, you sweat, and the community is unbeatable. Plus, some classes offer childcare.

Benicia Fitness (First Street) It’s a smaller, older gym—but the location is unbeatable, and it has the flexibility of an open gym you can use throughout the day. The class schedule is minimal, but the classes I took were fantastic and unique (including belly dancing). I’m excited to see the revamp unfold.

Benicia Community Health & Fitness Club Big space, packed classes, knowledgeable instructors—and one of my favorite dance classes of the week. Add childcare, plus sauna and steam room amenities, and you can see why it’s a local staple. Best part: you can just show up—no advance sign-up needed.

Why supporting local gyms matters It’s easy to think a workout is a workout—just a membership, a class, a treadmill. But locally owned gyms aren’t just selling access to equipment. They’re building spaces where people feel seen, encouraged, and connected.

Supporting local businesses keeps Benicia’s character intact. It strengthens the relationships that make a town feel like a community. And it ensures that the places we rely on—our gyms, studios, coffee shops, and boutiques—are run by people who live here, raise families here, and pour their hearts into making Benicia better.

2012 Music/Documentary 1 hr, 26 min | PG13 Streaming on AppleTV+ & Prime Video This stunning documentary covers the mysterious life of Sixto Rodriguez, a 1970s Detroit folk singer and music pioneer whose two critically acclaimed albums flopped in the US but made him a massive and almost mythical superstar in apartheid-era South Africa. Two South African music producers and fans set about decades later to discover the impact of his failure and his success and ultimately whether or not the rumors of

his death were true. Rodriguez influenced a generation of South Africans, and many believe that his music and lyrics gave hope and inspiration to an oppressed country, by offering them an example of resistance.

This is an almost unbelievable story except we know it's true through substantial video documentation. It shows how one extraordinarily gifted man followed his soul's passion expecting nothing in return.

The film won many awards including the Oscar for Best Documentary. The Writers Guild, Producers Guild, National Board of Review, Critics' Choice Awards all awarded Searching for Sugarman the prize for best documentary. The soundtrack is a compilation of songs from Rodriguez's studio albums. Several iconic music producers considered Rodriguez the best singer/ songwriter in history and continue to be baffled that he never reached star status in the United States.

Get ready, this movie will surprise you with mystery, mayhem, music, and a touch of magic.

Gracie's Healing & Hearty New Year's Soup 10 servings ~ 300 calories per serving 20 grams of protein per serving No gluten, grain, dairy, or soy n Gourmet Gracie

Ingredients: 2 tbsp Avocado or olive oil 1 Yellow onion, chopped 2 tbsp Fresh Garlic, minced 2 lbs.

Ground chicken or turkey 2 tbsp Italian seasoning 2 tsp Sea salt 1 tbsp Garlic powder 1 tbsp Smoked paprika 1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper (to taste) 8 c. Chicken broth 2 c. Carrots, peeled and chopped 1 c. Celery, chopped, including leaves 1 c. Green beans, cut into 2 inch pieces 2 c. Sweet potato, peeled and cubed 1 1/2 c.

Cabbage, shredded 1 can 28 oz. can Fire-roasted, diced tomatoes, Italian style 1 can 14.5 oz. can Chickpeas/Garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed 1 c. Zucchini, quartered and sliced Fresh parsley and/or other fresh herbs and dollops of yogurt for garnish (optional)

Preparation: 1. Heat the oil in a large soup pot over medium heat. Sauté onions until slightly soft, add minced garlic, continue sautéing 1 - 2 minutes. Add ground chicken/turkey and cook thoroughly.

Add seasonings, cook 2 - 3 more minutes until mixed well. Add broth, bring to boil, then reduce heat to medium low. Add carrots and celery, simmer for 10 minutes. Add green beans, sweet potato and cabbage. Simmer for another 15 - 20 minutes until potatoes are slightly soft. Add diced tomatoes, chickpeas and zucchini. Simmer all until the zucchini is soft. Garnish as you'd like. For thicker soup, blend 1 - 2 cups of soup in a blender and return to the pot.

2. Feel free to add or substitute your preferred vegetables. Keeps well when refrigerated for 4 - 5 days. Freezes well.

Enjoy this nutritious, warming, high protein soup as a meal with some crusty bread or for a light lunch or snack.

This book is more an exploration of ideas than a guide on how to “fix” the issue at hand. The Moment to Arise n Jean Purnell Photos by Michael Van Auken Take a little luck, a good friendship, a desire for something new, many months of watching and imagining, and a lot of positive thinking – toss these ingredients together and you get the new Blackbird Gallery, which opened the first weekend in December at 422 First Street. The soft opening was timed with Benicia’s Holiday Open House and tree lighting ceremony, a popular event that made up for the lack of time for promotion.

"Blackbird will feature a diverse array of contemporary and traditional fine art, including painting, sculpture, drawing, encaustic, assemblage, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and more."

My good friend Angela White and I founded the Blackbird Gallery out of a shared desire to create an inviting space to

celebrate the art that moves and inspires us. We have been looking for the right space for most of the past year and are delighted to have finally found our nest. Blackbird will feature a diverse array of contemporary and traditional fine art, including painting, sculpture, drawing, encaustic, assemblage, ceramics, textiles, jewelry, and more. We invite you to say hello at our Opening Reception on Saturday, January 17, from 4 to 6 pm.

Eight artists make up the initial membership, and the gallery intends to grow.

The blackbird is a symbol of transformation, change, and rebirth, themes that resonate with us. Both locals and tourists know that First Street has a strong community vibe, an obvious friendliness. I feel connected to people even after meeting them for the first time. Located in the former home of Pups and Purrz, the gallery has benefited from a partnership between the new tenants and landlord Rebecca Barnes-Lipman in a makeover that was completed quickly. Our gallery boasts two comfy chairs and a rug situated next to a bookcase full of art books, a gift from former Benicia artist Pam Dixon. A plate of dog biscuits sits inside the front door. A coffee pot, Saturday morning get-togethers, art critiques, poetry readings, and musical entertainment are also part of the plan.

Angela and I have a short history. We met while looking for studio space in the period after the pandemic and now share Studio 24 at 940 Tyler Street in the Benicia Arsenal. We later realized that we are both from Bethesda, Maryland. Pretty much, we’re different in all other ways, which is delightful.

How to Let Curiosity Guide Your Lifelong Learning in the New Year

n Cooper Mickelson Curiosity doesn’t just enrich individual lives, it strengthens communities. When people are actively learning, exploring new ideas, and sharing what they’ve discovered, neighborhoods become more connected, adaptable, and vibrant. A curious community is one that asks better questions, supports creative risk taking, and grows together.

Curiosity is defined by the American Psychology Association as “the impulse or desire to investigate, observe, or gather information, particularly when the material is novel or interesting.” For many of us, curiosity shaped much of our childhood. As we grew older, however, curiosity often took a back seat to more “urgent” matters like productivity and career advancement.

Scientific research suggests that as people perceive their future time as more limited with age, they tend to place less value on curiosity, leading to a decline in curiosity over time.

Yet curiosity has a profound impact on our well-being at every stage of life. It sharpens the mind, builds confidence, strengthens interpersonal skills, opens new career pathways, and improves our ability to communicate.

So why starve our curiosity, and miss out on these benefits, just because we’re no longer children?

As the year begins, we invite you to lean into that quiet call of wonder and feed your curiosity. For some, it may have been a long time since you’ve pursued knowledge purely for the joy of learning. Fortunately, lifelong learning has gained renewed attention over the past few years, offering endless resources, practices, and frameworks to help adults re-engage with curiosity.

To help you get started, here are three popular and approachable methods for guiding lifelong learning.

Interest Spirals: Liberated Learning, an organization dedicated to empowering communities with the knowledge, skills, and embodied tools to co-create restorative, healing-centered learning environments, teaches a practice known as “interest spirals.”

Interest spirals offer a natural, inviting way for both children and adults to explore curiosity. The practice follows a fourweek cycle, with each week focused on a different stage: Immersion, Creation, Connection, and Integration. Rather than rushing toward mastery, learners are encouraged to sit with curiosity, follow where it leads, and reflect on how new knowledge connects to their lives.

Companion Reading: Reading two interconnected books at the same time can deepen understanding, offer multiple perspectives, and make challenging material more approachable.

An effective approach is to pair a nonfiction book with a fictional novel that has similar themes. For example, if you’re interested in fungi, you might read Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake alongside What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher.

The nonfiction provides scientific insight, while the novel offers an imaginative and emotionally engaging counterpoint. Having a lighter or more narrative-driven read alongside a dense nonfiction book helps keep the momentum going and often sparks further curiosity.

Personal Curriculum: One of the most popular lifelong learning practices today is creating a self-directed “personal curriculum.”

A personal curriculum is a loosely structured learning plan centered around an area of genuine interest, inspired by traditional academic syllabi but free from grades or pressure.

This approach celebrates intellectual curiosity and encourages intentional use of free time. It also allows you to embrace being a beginner in a low-stakes environment while giving your learning enough structure to feel purposeful.

Your curriculum might last a month, a season, or an entire year. Be realistic about your time and energy so curiosity remains joyful rather than stressful.

To begin, brainstorm by asking yourself: Which topics have I been curious about or interested in but haven’t given myself time to explore and study?

What skills do I wish I had but haven’t taken the time to learn or improve?

Which niche interests or topics do I constantly seek out in the media I consume?

Look for patterns and choose the topics that genuinely excite you.

Next, gather resources to support your learning. These might be workshops or classes, books, YouTube essays, documentaries, or podcasts, anything that aligns with your goals and sparks interest. If you’re unsure where to begin, local librarians are an invaluable resource and can recommend materials for nearly any subject.

Then build your syllabus. Give your course a title, write a brief description, and outline your key topics or learning outcomes. You can list required reading, weekly habits, or hands-on practices. Many people find it helpful to include an assignment or final project. This can be an essay, a powerpoint presentation to show your friends, or an art piece. The format should reflect both the subject and what feels most engaging to you.

Finally, take time to reflect. Consider what worked, what didn’t, and what surprised you. Reflection helps refine future learning and keeps curiosity evolving.

Above all, lifelong learning should feel expansive, not overwhelming. Let your own experience be your guide.

Wyoming is a state rich in wildlife and natural wonders—a place where visitors can truly slow down and reconnect with nature. Each season brings its own rewards, from colorful summers to wildlife-filled autumns and serene winter landscapes.

Our preferred home base is a large cabin just off Highway 26/287, located between Jackson (often called Jackson Hole) and the town of Dubois, just across the Continental Divide.

From here, many of Wyoming’s most iconic destinations are within easy reach.

Fall is our favorite time to visit. Wildlife activity increases as animals prepare for winter, and sightings are common. Bison, elk, moose, deer, antelope, bighorn sheep, and even grizzly bears can often be seen. One standout experience is hiking around Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park. Set at the base of the dramatic Teton Range, the area stays lush well into fall.

The approximately seven-mile loop trail is moderately challenging and rewards hikers with stunning views.

When hiking in this region, carrying bear spray is strongly recommended, as both black bears and grizzlies are actively feeding before winter.

After a hike, a stop in the small community of Moose is well worth it. Dornan’s Chuckwagon offers food, drinks, and incredible views of the Tetons from its location along the Snake River. Dornan’s is a familyowned resort situated within Grand Teton National Park, approximately 40 miles south of Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park is one of Wyoming’s crown jewels. Spanning more than 2.2 million acres, the park is known for its geothermal features, rugged terrain, and abundant wildlife. Highlights include Old Faithful, the vibrant Grand Prismatic Spring, and the dramatic Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. A visit here is essential for anyone exploring the state.

Equally impressive, Grand Teton National Park showcases towering mountain peaks and pristine wilderness. The jagged Teton Range provides a spectacular backdrop for hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, climbing, and water activities. Alpine lakes such as Jenny Lake offer peaceful settings for kayaking and fishing, making the park a consistent favorite among visitors.

The National Elk Refuge, located near Jackson, plays a critical role in wildlife conservation within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. During winter, thousands of elk migrate to the valley floor, and visitors can experience guided sleigh rides through the herds. The refuge is also home to bighorn sheep, wolves, and numerous bird species.

For a glimpse into ancient history, the Legend Rock Petroglyph Site features more than 300 carvings spread across 92 panels, some dating back over 10,000 years. This protected site offers insight into the cultures and beliefs of the Native American peoples who once lived in the region.

Art lovers should not miss the National Museum of Wildlife Art | Art Collection in Jackson Hole. The 51,000-square-foot museum showcases exceptional wildlife art and features an Idaho quartzite façade inspired by Scotland’s Slains Castle, blending beautifully into the surrounding hillside.

Turpin Meadow Campground, located 17 miles east of Moran Junction on Buffalo Valley Road, offers a quieter outdoor experience. With 14 campsites, corrals, bear boxes, and access to hiking, horseback riding, and fly fishing, it’s an ideal base for exploring the area. “People love downtown Benicia for its charming local businesses, and we built Common Room Coworking to match that charm,” founder Rachel Bhagwat reflects. “My vision was that our members would see it as their second living room and feel a sense of ownership and belonging--that’s where the name Common Room came from.”

The space utilizes natural light, calming energy, and thoughtful design that invites people to try new ways of working. “We worked hard to balance the open plan with visual and acoustic privacy,” Bhagwat explains. Every detail, from seven-daya-week member access to ergonomic sit-stand desks to full monitor setups to excellent WiFi, supports both productivity and well-being. More importantly, the variety of environments encourages members to explore what helps them do their best work on any given day.

“One of the best parts of working from home is the flexibility to move around,” Bhagwat says. “Desk, kitchen table, couch, backyard--whatever you’re in the mood for that day. Common Room was designed to offer members that same freedom, just outside the home.” That freedom is built into every corner: collaborative cafe-style seating, quiet focus rooms, cozy nooks, laptop-friendly patios, and private call rooms.
