FR OM T HE EDIT O R August 2020 We are halfway into a year with few opportunities for traditional vacations or holiday activities amid the coronavirus pandemic.

I am a traveler, wanderer, camper, hiker; a hit the open road kind of person. I miss the freedom that travel brings. I know that the situation that we are in is temporary and that we will once again be able travel. The length of the pandemic is ultimately up to us.

My dog, Emmy has afforded me the most opportunity to get out of my house. There are wonderful dog-friendly trails that are open in Benicia and all around the Bay Area.

My husband Jon and I pack the backpack with water and sandwiches and hit the road.

We are mindful of social distancing and wear a mask when there are other hikers. We do our best to find isolated trails that are hopefully uninhabited by fellow humans. Of course, these are outings that take hours, not days, and we soon find ourselves home again. And there is always something that needs to be done at home.

Like many people, we have invested our extra and ongoing stay-at-home time on our house and yard. We have an abundant vegetable garden and will soon be inundated with way too many tomatoes, basil, zucchinis, peppers and more. We will be supplying the Food is Free Benicia food stands with much of the overflow. I have decided, along with my daughter Genevieve and my (almost) daughter-inlaw, Karina to try canning some of our bounty. We will enlist the help of one of Benicia’s expert canners, who has shared some of her recipes in this issue.

There will be only virtual classes during the first quarter of the school year, which begins August 17th. The BUSD has put together the most comprehensive program possible to ensure that our children and educators are safe.

No one really knows how this will work, but we all know it won’t be easy for anyone. Teachers hold a paramount role in our children’s development, helping to shape their understanding of the world and how they can choose to engage in it. We are now asking our teachers to go beyond – become even more flexible within unknown parameters and rise to their calling in the face of a pandemic.

Now, more than ever, our educators need all the support they can get.

We are heading into election season! The September issue will contain statements from the candidates for mayor and for city council. The October issue will cover ballot measures that Benicia residents will be voting on. There will not be any opinion articles.

QUESTION: Are there any changes in what buyers are looking for in a home since the pandemic?

As a realtor here in Benicia, I have noticed a sea change as residents grapple with the increased time spent at home.

People are starting to require or request a home that better fits their new lifestyle since Covid 19 and the resulting health mandates began. Many people have to work at home, and their houses feel tight. It is frustrating them. They don’t have enough dedicated office space for one or two people working at home.

For some, the school/play spaces are not set up well for these new demands on their homes. They want larger spaces with room to breathe, work, play, and relax in their homes.

On the flip side, because we are spending so much time at home, some clients have called and said, “My house isn’t working for me. I only live in two rooms, and I have a four bedroom, three bath house that I have to clean and maintain.

The yard is too big. I don’t have time to relax. I need to downsize.”

Sheltering in place has put new demands on what our homes mean to us. People are looking for spaces that fit the “New Normal,” and I like it. I have been a realtor for thirty-four years, and this change is new and challenging. I love that people are looking to settle down again, and put in new roots, and I love helping people find the home of their dreams.

Being homebound for several months certainly puts a spotlight on the home features that we don't like... as well as those we feel we need now more than ever. Usually I ask buyers what their top three “needs” and “wants” are in a house. I’m seeing a shift of “wants” becoming “needs,” as we all spend more time at home.

Some of the highly sought after interior features now include: a larger kitchen, as people are cooking, baking and eating in more; an in-home office, since more people are working remotely and children are being home schooled; and a multiuse bonus room to use as a game room, movie room, gym, or playroom.

Additionally, with travel so restricted, outdoor activities have become a critical outlet. Now popular are large yards with space for a garden, pools and hot tubs, outdoor living space, patio covers, play areas for children and even a place to park a boat or RV/trailer.

As we adapt to our changing lifestyles during this pandemic, we have been reminded that life is precious. Where and how we live is more important than ever.

Prior to shelter in place orders brought on by COVID-19, many who visited the Raley’s Southampton Shopping Center on the weekend can recall the adoption events put on by Solano County Friends of Animals, NORSLED (Northern California Sled Dog Rescue) and others. Nearly every hiking trail in Benicia is dog friendly. On the West side of town, the State Park welcomes dogs on main trails.

While they are not allowed on trails close to environmentally sensitive areas near the water, they are welcome on main trails in the hills and near the entrances. If you are looking to walk or hike in Southampton, there are several options ranging from Benicia Community Park, Lake Herman Recreation Area, and certain trails in Jack London Park. Dogs are fully allowed off leash to socialize with other pups at the Benicia Dog Park located inside of Benicia Community Park.

The 19th Amendment

Centennial Anniversary Women's right to vote Patty Gavin "I never doubted that equal rights was the right direction. Most reforms, most problems, are complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about ordinary equality." Alice Paul The year 2020 marks the Centennial Anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women's constitutional right to vote. In this year, 2020, which some might say will go down as one of the most challenging years in American History, it's time to take a moment to commemorate and celebrate this milestone of Democracy.

The year was 1848 when the women's suffrage movement actually began. A women's rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York, and the suffrage movement was launched. Women’s suffrage supporters would work for the next 50 years to educate the public about the validity of enfranchising women. The setbacks and challenges along the way were numerous. Antisuffragists argued that most women did not want to vote, and because they took 14 • Benicia Magazine

care of the home and children, they said women did not have time to vote or stay informed on politics.

Most women who supported the suffrage movement wanted equal rights with men. They felt that women's interests should be represented and the female point of view heard for reform.

At the turn of the century the suffragist movement became a mass movement.

Two organizations were instrumental in leading the way to win the vote for women, the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and the National Women's Party (NWP).

Numbering in the millions in the 1910s, the NAWSA worked to earn women's right to vote in individual states, while at the same time lobbying President Woodrow Wilson and Congress to pass a women’s suffrage Constitutional amendment. This group was a moderate organization in word and action, as opposed to the NWP, the more radical activist group, who sometimes used civil disobedience to draw attention to their cause. The NWP organized receptions, protests, marches, picketed the White

House, and wrote dozens of press releases. Led by Alice Paul, the NWP organized a massive suffragette parade in Washington, DC, in March, 1913.

Members, including Paul, were arrested and jailed for their "unpatriotic" acts and Paul was placed in solitary confinement, while the other members went on a hunger strike! Public sentiment swung to the side of the activists, and they were eventually released. Although these two organizations did not always agree on strategy, due to their combined efforts, and because of the sheer grit, determination, and courage of the women that led the fight and the activists that supported it, the 19th Amendment was finally ratified on August 18th, 1920,

after a 70 year battle! There is a long list of women leaders who championed the cause, women of resilience and commitment, including Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul, Ida B. Wells, Lucy Stone, and many others, too numerous to list here.

It is important to note that although African American women were not excluded from membership in NAWSA at the national level, state and local organizations chose to exclude them.

Conventions were segregated and NAWSA required black women to march separately during the 1913 parade in DC. Even within this socially progressive movement, racism persisted. The first and second generation of Black American suffragists, of which Mary Ann Shadd, Harriet Forten Purvis, and Sarah Parker Redmond are a part, had strong ties to the abolitionist movement

and believed in universal suffrage – voting rights without regard to race, gender, education, or economic status. Scholars and historians have recently uncovered complex histories of African American women in the suffrage movement, but there is still much work to be done. There are lessons to be learned from the suffragette movement, especially because securing equal rights for women is still a struggle that continues into the present day.

Our takeaway is that these brave women, in community, lifted their voices together to guarantee and protect women's right to vote. In the words of Judy Perry Martinez, President of the American Bar Association, it brought forth "the largest expansion of Democracy in the history of our country."

Can It! Genevieve Hand In the last five months, many of us have turned to gardening to pass our time while staying at home; some perhaps trying their hand at growing their own food. And if you’re like many of us, you may have gotten a little over-zealous with your planting. Having reaped what you sowed; you now have heaps of produce stockpiled in your kitchen that you can’t possibly consume before it spoils. What’s a food-waste conscious person to do? Can it!

Canning at home is fairly straightforward and doesn’t require too many gadgets. The process works by wielding heat and pressure to sanitize and seal. Today, there are two safe ways to can at home: water bath canning (a lower-temperature process suitable for highly acidic foods, like fruits) and pressure canning (a highertemperature process suitable for other foods, like vegetables). In each case, a jar of the desired food is heated until the contents expand, changing the internal pressure. The heat, when applied for the required amount of time, kills molds, yeasts, enzymes, and bacteria that may be present. Gases are vented from Canning is a process that originated in France. In 1795 – amid battles in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, and the Caribbean – Napoleon announced a 12,000-franc reward for anyone who could come up with a novel way to preserve food for his soldiers. Nicolas Appert, a young chef from the Champagne region, was up to the challenge.

His solution? Pack food into airtight sealed champagne bottles with a combination of lime and cheese. And yes, it worked!

the jar and by the time the processing period is finished, the pressure outside the jar is greater than the pressure within. This difference in pressure pulls the lid down, forming a vacuum seal that prevents new bacteria from entering.

We spoke with a local canning enthusiast who shared some of her tips and tricks with us. With a primary focus on tomatoes, she plants in mid-April and spends all of August canning a yield of anywhere from 50-100 jars of various preserved recipes. “I grew up learning to can with my grandmother and have now returned to it. Having experimented with it on my own for about six or seven years – it’s been a learning experience!” She stresses caution and attention to detail when it comes to the canning process, but advocates for experimenting with recipes. “Canning has been around for a long time and a lot of those old recipes used a lot of pectin and sugar, but newer canning recipes have evolved with the times and changing taste trends.”

What happens if you don’t follow the canning process correctly? At best, a tummy ache. At worst, botulism.

“Cleanliness is key,” reports our local canner, “Sterilize the jars, disinfect the countertops – you can never have anything be too clean!” Fortunately, as long as you can follow directions and keep time, it’s a fairly fool-proof endeavor.

Zucchini Relish Ingredients 10 cups minced zucchini (skin on) 4 tbsp Kosher or Pickling salt 2 cloves garlic crushed 4 cups minced onion 2 cups apple cider vinegar 2 cups bell pepper (assorted colors)

5 cups sugar 1 tsp dry mustard 1 tsp dry nutmeg 1 tsp cornstarch 1/2 tsp pepper 1 tsp celery seed 1 tsp turmeric

Directions Soak first 4 ingredients overnight in fridge. The next day, rinse several times.

Add all ingredients in large pot, blend well, bring to boil and simmer for about 30 minutes. Fill hot jars to 1/4 inch head-space and water processes for 10 minutes.

So, what do you need to start canning? If you’re starting out with the water bath method, all you need are glass preserving jars (check for cracks or chips) with new lids, a large pot (big enough to fit your jars and have 2-3 inches of water on top) with a lid and a rack that will fit inside it (to elevate the jars), your recipe ingredients, and something to lift the jars out of the water with. Pressure canning requires a specialized appliance.

Cherry Tomato Ketchup Ingredients 4 pints or 8 cups ripe cherry tomatoes, cut in half 2 cups red wine vinegar or apple vinegar 2/3 cup dark brown sugar 4 tsp salt 2 tsp black pepper 3/4 tsp Worcestershire sauce Optional, 2 minced and seeded jalapeños Directions In a wide skillet, simmer tomatoes, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper until a thick jamlike mixture forms and liquid evaporates, 20 to 25 minutes. Puree until smooth. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve. Store in refrigerator or can using pressure cooker.

Benicia Schools reopen in all virtual learning model Charles F. Young, Ed.D. Superintendent, Benicia Unified School District

We all want students back in school, there is no disagreement there, but we must do so through exercising an abundance of caution. With that said, the Benicia Unified School District will begin the school year in an all-virtual learning model. To remain responsive, we will review the status of our virtual learning model at each Board meeting throughout the first quarter. We are also reviewing the status of our childcare program to determine if we can safely expand capacity to support more of our families.

Determining which phase BUSD will enter into in August 2020, and when BUSD will move between phases, will be determined in conjunction with the Department of Public Health, California Department of Education and Solano Office of Education directives at that time. The following models are the examples of potential instructional options with social distancing measures in place.

Model 1 — Virtual Learning: Virtual learning occurs when the learner and instructor are separated by time and distance and therefore cannot meet in a traditional physical classroom setting.

Elementary Schools: Students would attend an AM or PM

Benicia High School: Students would have Virtual Classes

twice a week and opportunities to attend small group sessions for each of their classes up to twice a week. Depending on a student’s four classes/teachers, they may have some of their online instruction on M/W and some on T/TH, with the alternating days being used for in-person instruction. Students will schedule to be on campus up to four days a week depending on how they learn best, their families’ schedule or transportation needs, and other considerations.

Liberty High School:

Each student will be given an individualized learning plan that will consist of both online and in-person learning. Students would attend either in-person AM/PM two days a week and then attend virtual learning sessions with teachers during the other days.

Situated at the end of First Street, on the Carcinquez Strait, the restaurant faces west, offering unparalleled bay views.

Sunsets are especially spectacular. For years, customers enjoyed mostly indoor dining and drinking, with limited patio seating and the casual, cozy, and well

health safety measures. All of Sailor Jack’s employees, including waitstaff, chefs and food preparation workers, wear masks and gloves and follow all new safety guidelines.

Customer safety is their first concern.

The management team at Sailor Jack’s chose to see the pandemic as an opportunity to expand their outdoor eating space. They used the months of lockdown to make changes that keep patrons and

are now able to enjoy the perennial favorite, fish and chips, as well as surf and turf. Dinner choices include a variety of fish, including yellowfin tuna, petrale sole, salmon and halibut. Their ribeye steaks and pork chops are also patron favorites.

Appetizers are especially tasty here with crispy brussel sprouts, fried or raw oysters, tuna poke, calamari and ceviche. Lunch offerings include freshly made salads (including a great seafood salad), fresh

The recent COVID-19 pandemic changed all that, but manager/owner, Carey Morgan and her team made some important modifications that have transformed the dining experience at Sailor Jack’s. Morgan and her team obtained permission from the City of Benicia to place tables along the edge of the adjoining parking lot, creating the consummate waterfront dining experience.

They recently erected a polycarbonate glass wall to protect patrons from the bay winds. They decreased the number of inside tables to ten, but increased the outside tables from twenty to thirty. Each of these tables is spaced at least six feet from one other in an effort to comply with recent

staff safe, yet still allow the owners to stay in business. The City of Benicia is to be commended on their efforts to work with business people such as the Sailor Jack’s team to sustain the economic feasibility of doing business here in Benicia. Carey Morgan and her team are to be applauded for using the pandemic as an opportunity to transform their already successful business into a unique attraction and dining option.

In early April, as business downtown came to a standstill, Carey Morgan wrote, “Warm French Bread & Clam Chowder for Take-Out” on her sandwich board outside Sailor Jack’s entrance, and many Benicians, eager for the comforting food, made Sailor Jack’s their choice. Reopening was complicated by the loss of some seafood suppliers, but at last, customers

hamburgers and sandwiches. Vegetarian options include salads and a house polenta. Breakfast can be ordered until 2:00 p.m. on weekends for brunch lovers and late risers.

It is inspirational to witness the optimistic attitude of the management at Sailor Jack’s. As Carey Morgan noted, “Just because we have always done things a certain way, doesn’t mean we can’t make changes for the better.” With businesses teetering between success and failure, this affirmation and can-do attitude is refreshing indeed. And let’s face it, nothing beats sitting outside, next to the bay with a cold beverage in your hand, letting the salt breeze carry your worries away.

But a knock on her door will change the life she’s built in the town of Benicia, California, with its bustling main street boasting sparkling lights around every tree, and beautiful homes on the water … it is the epitome of California living. Angela is a well-known realtor in town, liked by almost everyone. Some would describe her as effortlessly beautiful with a smile that could make your day, and milk chocolate brown hair to match her deep hazel eyes. In the cul de sac of Bristol Lane, she shines. Between taking care of her family – husband Bruce and son Payton – Angela also makes time to host social gatherings at her home.

Angela starts the day like any other day, getting up at 5:30am to head downstairs to make breakfast and start the coffee for Bruce. She makes herself a cup of Earl Grey, then scrambles eggs and prepares toast for the family. She glances at the clock and sees that it’s 6:15 and time to wake Payton for school. Heading upstairs, she peeks into Payton’s room, pausing to reflect on how he’s grown. In just a few years he’ll be off to college. “It’s time to get ready for school, honey” says Angela. She is rewarded with a light grunt and movement.

She heads back downstairs to meet Bruce in the kitchen. With a kiss she asks, “What’s your day looking like?”

Bruce smiles and says, “I have a meeting with Benicia Flooring Company to go over some design plans for the new office. I’ll be home at the usual time, see you later!”

He turns to walk out the back door and runs into Madalyn, who rushes in, knocking into Bruce like a little blonde tornado. Madalyn, Angela’s best friend and the bombshell who lives next door, was in and out of the Wingate house so frequently, Bruce wondered if she’d pilfered their hide-a-key.

“Hi, Madalyn,” says Bruce, startled. Madalyn returns the “hi” without even looking at him. Helping herself to coffee, Madalyn gets down to business.

“You know the old Baxter house on Kellyn Court?” she asks, Angela starts, “Yes, the one that no one has been able to sell, and it’s been empty since forever?”

“Exactly. It looks like it may finally have some traction,” she says with a grin Angela recognizes. The one that means gossip is on its way. “What do you mean?

How do you know?” Angela asks, leaning in. “Karen called me yesterday,” begins Madelyn, “she saw a car parked in the driveway and a woman looking at the house.”

Suddenly a man’s voice cuts through their conversation “Maddy! …Maddy?” “Damn, it's Hank. I swear that man can’t make eggs without me. I’ll see you later, hon!” Madalyn drains the last of her coffee, and dashes out the door for home.

Angela heads upstairs to change and get ready for work, passing her four awards in the hall – three celebrating black women in business, and one recognizing her company. Realizing she’s running late, Angela quickly dresses in a simple but sophisticated outfit from one of the local shops. “So nice to have great clothing choices right in town.” She thinks to herself. Checking the mirror, she grabs her red handbag and is out the door.

Driving to her office on First Street, she takes a detour to Kellyn Court and stops in the middle of the small residential street. A chill comes over her as she looks at the house. She thinks of Carol and Shane Baxter and how it all went too far...

Another thought comes to her, “Maybe it’s time for something good to happen here. Maybe the new family can make it a home again...” Her phone rings, startling her from her musings. It’s Mark from the office asking if she could bring him a honey latte and cinnamon sugar toast from Farm and Flour. “Yeah, no problem. I’ll be there in a few minutes,” she replies.

As she turns the car around to leave Kellyn Ct., she looks out at the sky and thinks to herself, “it’s such a beautiful day.”

Coping Together in Isolation

Artists find connection in times of social distancing Catherine Crawford The coronavirus has had a devastating impact on our nation's arts sector.

Since the first U.S. case was reported on January 20, 2020, cancellations and closings have taken place at thousands of arts organizations across the country, and 85% of the nation’s artists are now unemployed.

Benicia has long been considered an art town boasting one of the most active and influential art communities in the Bay Area. Hundreds of artists live and work in studios throughout the city, creating a variety of world-class pieces.

In addition to the visual arts, Benicia is also home to a thriving performing arts scene.

Benicia Ballet, VOENA, Old Town Theatre Group, Benicia Literary Arts and many more.

That was before the pandemic.

Now, most galleries are closed or have reduced capacity and the theatre and music venues have shuttered.

Long time Benicia artist Diane Williams talks about how the pandemic has affected her and other artists.

Diane Williams Like artists everywhere, I have found the spring and summer of this Covid-19 crisis to be a challenge in every aspect of life, including my creative process. Oddly, I discovered that Covid has potentially altered my artistic course.

My usual approach to making art felt disingenuous. I suddenly had the urge to express physical strength on the canvas.

To do this, I put my painting on the floor, and with a huge Chinese mop brush, put my entire body into a brush stroke. The contrast between bold physicality and meditative calm was the combination that helped me cope with a situation outside of my control.

In talking with other Benicia artists, I realized we were each searching for ways to use our art to cope with Covid.

My husband and studio partner, Chuck Potter, feels that many local artists seem to be taking advantage of more studio time. “I’ve been able to give studio time a priority,” he said, “It has let me push my artwork in directions that interest me.”

Benicia artist Merry Gregg used the shelter in place as a time to reassess her in-home studio. She wanted to make her studio “video worthy” so that she could do a virtual open studio. “It’s exciting for me to think about ways to make the studio more visually beautiful as well as functional,” she said.

Feelings of being overwhelmed by the current situation have made it hard for artist Stephanie Gray to concentrate on the work she was doing prior to Covid.

“I know art can be healing, but with

everything the way it is, I find myself questioning its relevance,” Gray said.

By using collage to put Geisha and Samurai prints in comical situations, she has turned to humor in her work to amuse herself and add levity to a difficult situation.

In addition to how artists make art, the global pandemic has altered the way artists present their work. In Benicia, the spring usually means gearing up for Arts Benicia’s Open Studios, traditionally held the first weekend in May. Open Studios, like most other art events, had to be cancelled this year.

Like many artist instructors, Chuck and I also were forced to cancel the workshops we’ve offered in our studio for 15 years. But we wanted to find a way for our students to continue to meet, learn and share, especially in times of stress and isolation. Many people have said our classes are like art therapy, so we felt a need to stay connected.

As a result, we, like many others, turned to online teaching. Teaching virtually has allowed us to continue our established classes as well as offer private and semiprivate mentorships. It has expanded our reach as well. We now have students from out of state, and inquiries from as far away as New Zealand and the U.K. Like the rest of the world, Benicia artists are searching for ways to cope and to be creative during the stress of Covid-19. Some are struggling to move forward, others have found it to be a time for planning or renewed creative energy.

Benicia's Hidden Treasure Christina Strawbridge Michael Trahan is one of Benicia's hidden treasures as an artist, humanitarian, and decent guy.

Our paths have crossed over the years, often joining forces to benefit local nonprofits through staging events.

Normally at this time of year, we are madly working on Benicia Fashion Runway, a fashion event held during the last week of September. Because of Covid-19, the popular 2-day production will not be exciting the fashion crowds for the first time in 12 years. It would be irresponsible to think we could put 5 designers, 20 models, 15 technicians and 500 attendees together, even though it would be outdoors.

I have relied on Michael and, friend, Penny Stell to help plan the event and take on the huge role of finding financial sponsors to support funding the production. The dynamic duo always come through with support from their connections in Benicia and elsewhere.

The money raised has been significant, as the costs have continued to escalate.

Because the runway show is outdoors, there are added expenses like power, tenting, fencing, lighting, etc.

Michael has served as Benicia Fashion Runway's logistics director using his expertise in interior and exterior design.

He turns an asphalt parking lot into a dramatic venue that could rival the best of New York or Paris Fashion Week. As the event has become more popular, Michael has been able to find ways of expanding the seating from 200 to 500 using his creativity and pressure from me.

When attendees walk through the entrance on the red carpet there is an audible gasp as to how beautiful the setting is. Michael not only designs the staging, he and his team, including Penny and her husband Bob, are on site from early morning to sometimes midnight making sure everything is perfectly executed. It has become a labor of love for all of us as we have seen the event grow in popularity and coolness. We will miss doing it this year!

As an award winning interior designer, Michael can not only transform a parking lot, but create the most beautiful and functional spaces for homes and offices.

I have seen Michael's work first hand in some gorgeous homes in Benicia. I have especially admired his work for Sally and Ed Brennan in their "tindominium" at Rancho Benicia. Sally and Ed are well known for their taste and describe their interior as Asian Contemporary. They have mixed components like an Italian red refrigerator with vertical red tiles in the kitchen. Michael recommended

painting their kitchen and bedroom the same color for depth, especially in a small space. He advises on where and how to hang art and recently helped the Brennan's with a “wow factor� accent wall using an espresso alligator covering made of vinyl.

As in fashion, there are trends that are adapted by interior designers that are reflective of the times we live in. During Covid-19, clients who have been confined to their homes and personal spaces for months are finding a specific need to be comfortable and are searching for a

calming interior. The space needs to not only offer comfort, but also functionality. Many clients are editing their accessories for a clutter-free zone, lending to a more Zen-like space. Families desire to adapt and update specialty spaces, allowing for more functional group activities.

Michael and his associates now offer online design consultation. It's as easy as uploading photos directly to the company's website, then picking up the phone or using Zoom to discuss makeovers. During the stay-at-home order, offering an approach to the design process with little or no designer-to-client interaction is now part of the new normal in interior design. Michael Trahan and his creative talent has made Benicia that much more beautiful inside and out, and is, hopefully, now a discovered treasure.

A proud history of

Benicia Volunteer Firefighters Catherine Crawford The Benicia Volunteer Firemen, Incorporated was founded in 1847. It is the oldest continuously operated volunteer fire service in California, and it was the first volunteer fire organization west of the Mississippi. The founding of the volunteer firefighter organization coincided with the arrival of the Phoenix, Benicia’s first fire truck. The Phoenix

It remained in service for 74 years, but in the early 1900s it was replaced by a state of the art steam engine. In 1923 the Phoenix was loaned to the De Young Museum in San Francisco and was on exhibition there until 1966, when it returned to Benicia.

Benicia’s first fire brigade was made up of ordinary citizens. The area’s first station, the Solano Engine Company

was built in 1820 and served for her first 27 years in the New York Volunteer Fire Department. In 1847, it was purchased by the Pacific Mail Steamship Company and became the first fire engine to travel to California. It was brought to Benicia in 1849, the same year the city was founded by Dr. Robert Semple and Thomas Larkin. Joining the Fire Department became the ultimate goal for young men in Benicia. They vied amongst themselves for acceptance by the firemen. Only the most able-bodied and deft were allowed to handle the pumper.

The volunteer fire department was called the “bucket brigade,” as every house holder in Benicia was required to have a fire bucket. For better protection, a water system was constructed along First Street with cisterns at every block and the volunteers used the Phoenix engine, which was located on East Sixth Street and H Street, to battle flames.

Fire House, was on First Street, not far from the Benicia State Capitol. As illustrious as the history of the Benicia Volunteer Firemen is, there is much more to the organization than its history.

Now, volunteers undergo extensive training, including learning some of the same skills that professional firefighters must have. That includes climbing to the top of a fully extended engine ladder and learning how to use extraction tools. It also means learning how to handle wildfires that now occur with greater frequency.

Benicia Fire Department firefighters respect the volunteers and give them as much experience and exposure as possible, so volunteers can support them in times of need. The volunteers have learned cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-responder medical training — which is very valuable knowledge because it can be used not only in fire situations, but also

in other emergencies.

Pagers and smartphones have replaced the whistles and bells that summoned volunteers in previous eras, but some vestiges of the past remain.

Harkening back to the city’s early days, Phoenix Group is the name of one of four groups into which today’s fire volunteers are divided. The others are Active Reservists, made up of about 10

members who are working to become professional firefighters; the Logistical Support Group, six to eight people who make sure the equipment and supplies are ready and restocked for firefighters battling a blaze; and the Benicia Fire Museum Docents, between seven and 10 volunteers who guide visitors through the museum’s exhibits.
