What are they?

The Mini Virtual Sessions are short, focused workshops designed to provide in depth and detailed exploration on a wide variety of topics. There are practical sessions concentrating on technique, physicality and wellbeing, as well as discussion sessions and a focus on personal and professional development for students and teachers.

How are the workshops taught?

All sessions are delivered live on Zoom and taught by our diverse and experienced team of Tutors and assisted by our Ambassadors. Each and every one of them are not only extraordinary instrumentalists and teachers, but are also the most wonderfully joyous, yet serious individuals. How do I know if a session is right for me?

Some of the sessions have a recommendation of age and/or stage. Any recommendations where a ‘grade/level’ is given, please treat these as a guide.

For young musicians who are able to discuss the sessions with their instrumental teacher, we would highly recommend and encourage you to do this.

Is there a fee?

Each workshop has a small registration fee & full bursary support is available to all who request it. No one will be prevented from attending due to financial circumstances.

Improvisation for Beginners with Richard Michael Monday 4 and 11 October 5 - 5.30pm UK Time Join jazz pianist Richard Michael as he takes us on an improvisation adventure suitable for beginner players of any instrument.

Intermediate/Advanced Strings: Approaching a New Piece (all strings) with Amy Beth Horman Monday 4 October 6 - 6.45 pm UK Time Amy Beth Horman is a concert violinist, teacher and founder of Violin Breakfast. In this session, she will explore with us all the tips and tricks for how to approach a brand new piece of music.

This session is most suitable for Intermediate and Advanced level string players, but players of all instruments are welcome to attend.

Intermediate/Advanced Double Bass: Detangling Technical Twisters with Alice Kent Monday 4 October 7-8pm UK Time In this session, Double bassist Alice Kent will work with Intermediate and Advanced Double Basses to untangle the most common technical challenges.

Participants are invited to bring along any questions, passages from their repertoire or anything you may be finding tricky to the session.

Rhythm Basics for Beginners with Elsa Bradley Tuesday 5 and 12 October 5 - 5.30 pm UK Time In these two sessions, percussionist Elsa Bradley will work with beginner players to understand the basics of rhythm – bring along anything you can create rhythms on and get ready for a fun and interactive set of sessions.

These sessions are suitable for players of any instrument and young players who don’t play an instrument and would like to join in.

Intermediate Upper Strings Sessions with Andrea Gajic Tuesday 5, 12 and 19 October 6 - 6.45 pm UK Time In this three-part series, violinist Andrea Gajic will work with Intermediate violin and viola players. The first session will be focused on developing your sound and sessions 2 and 3 on developing your bowing technique.

We’ll be covering topics including how we produce sound, bow hold, contact point, arm weight and looking at techniques including martelé, collé, spiccato and sautillé.

Intermediate Lower Strings Sessions with David Munn Tuesday 5, 12 and 19 October 6 - 6.45 pm UK Time In this three part series, cellist David Munn will work with Intermediate cellists. Conducting Basics with Natalia Luis-Bassa Tuesday 5 October 7 - 8 pm UK Time All young people with an interest in conducting are invited to join Natalia Luis-Bassa for a session exploring the basics of conducting. In this session, we will learn how to conduct the main beating patterns in simple time and Natalia will share her tips for score reading and preparation. There will also be plenty of time for questions.

Shine at Sight Reading – Tips for Intermediate Strings with Alex Laing Monday 11 October 6 - 6.45 pm UK Time Intermediate level string players are invited to join violinist Alex Laing as we work with you to breakdown the skills required to shine at sight reading. Advanced players are very welcome to attend this session as well.

Advanced Upper Strings: Fun with Fundamentals with Amy Beth Horman Monday 11 October 7 - 8 pm UK Time During lockdown, violinist and educator Amy Beth Horman and her daughter Ava decided to make a conscious effort to reconnect and deepen relationships with the students and families they knew online. With a newfound interest in starting a class, they worked thoughtfully to form an online community of students looking to boost their fundamental training together, and ‘Violin Breakfast’ become a global class.

In this session, Amy Beth will work with Advanced violin and viola players on putting the FUN into Fundamentals whether it be practicing scales, working on intonation in shifting or developing your bowing techniques.

She will share her top tips and activities for prioritising your disposition and mindset and experiencing freedom when practising fundamentals.

With high-level exercises, we will work with you to reinforce the idea that you can have a lot of fun while doing very complex things.

Advanced Cello: Detangling Technical Twisters with Su-a Lee Monday 11 October 7 - 8 pm UK Time In this session, cellist Su-a Lee will work with Advanced cellists to untangle the most common technical challenges. Brass Basics for Beginners with Arlene Macfarlane Tuesday 12 and 19 October 6 - 6.45 pm UK Time In these very first ever brass sessions for young players at the Benedetti Foundation, beginner brass players of all instruments are invited to join trombonist and brass specialist Arlene Macfarlane for two really fun sessions exploring the basics of playing your instruments.

These sessions will be packed full of fun and engaging activities for young players to help support you in the early stages of learning. Performing Beethoven with David Watkin Tuesday 12 October 7 - 8 pm UK Time Cellist David Watkin has given talks and classes and coached at conservatoires all over the world. David is an expert in Historically Informed Performance and his article ‘Beethoven and the Cello’ was published by Cambridge University Press in Performing Beethoven ed. R Stowell.

In this session, David will share his thoughts on different aspects of performing Beethoven’s works and we invite participants to bring along any questions.

SESSION FOR PARENTS/CARERS: Supporting Your Child’s Learning with Andrea Gajic & Amy Beth Horman Monday 18 October 7 - 8 pm UK Time Parents/Carers/Families and anyone who supports young people’s practice and learning are invited to join violin teachers Amy Beth Horman and Andrea Gajic for a discussion on supporting your child’s learning.

This session is FREE to all and we encourage you to ask any questions either in advance, on the registration form, or bring them along on the evening.

We hope this session will provide you with a supportive community in which to share and develop strategies and ideas for supporting practice and learning at home.

Advanced Upper Strings with Callum Smart Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 October 7.15 - 8.15 pm UK Time In this two-part set of sessions for Advanced Upper Strings, violinist Callum Smart will work with you on reviewing both the right and left hand. Session 1 will focus on Right Hand Review – Tips and Tricks for Advanced Bowing Techniques and Session 2 concentrates on exercising and exploring the left hand. Over lockdown, Callum has created an incredible bank of resources on his Instagram page, breaking advanced techniques down into manageable chunks. These sessions will focus on many of these techniques and will provide the opportunity to work in detail with Callum and to ask questions and develop your understanding and your ideas.

Developing a String Curriculum with Francis Cummings Tuesday 28 September 6-7pm UK Time In this session, violinist Francis Cummings will lead a discussion on the topic of developing a curriculum for teaching strings.

A passionate and committed educator, Francis holds teaching posts at the University of Huddersfield, Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. He was Director of Music at St Mary’s Music School in Edinburgh before taking up post as Director of Music for Sistema Scotland where he designed and shaped the curriculum and was instrumental in the founding of children’s orchestras in four Scottish cities.

Scaffolding: Helping Students to Meet Their Goals with Amy Beth Horman Wednesday 29 September 6-7pm UK Time Join violinist Amy Beth Horman for an in-depth discussion on the scaffolding of learning and the collaborative process that takes place between student, teacher and family in helping students to set and meet their goals.

Working with Young People with Additional Needs with Pete Sparkes, Drake Music Scotland Wednesday 29 September 7.30-8.30pm UK Time Pete Sparkes is the Artistic Director of Drake Music Scotland - the nation’s leading arts organisation providing music making opportunities for people with disabilities. Their expertise in inclusive music technology and specialist teaching methods support people of all ages and a wide range of disabilities to play, learn and compose music independently.

Pete will provide support and guidance on working with young people with additional needs in instrumental lessons. In this session, we will specifically be focusing on working with young people with ADHD and Autism (ASD) and helping you to explore how to create inclusive music provision in instrumental lessons.

Freedom: Helping Young Players to Take Charge with Amy Beth Horman Thursday 30 September 7.30-8.30pm UK Time From practice tips to motivational tools, this session aims to leave you with a toolkit of strategies to encourage your young players to take charge of their learning and development.

Preparing Your Students for Conservatoire Thursday 30 September 7.30-8.30pm UK Time This panel discussion is hosted by musicians who are both orchestral and chamber musicians as well as teachers at the UK’s conservatoires. The main focus of this discussion will be preparing your students for auditions and the transition to conservatoire both practically, technically and psychologically.

Creative Teaching: Improvisation in the Instrumental Lesson with Richard Michael Saturday 2 October 3-4pm UK Time Richard Michael occupies a unique place in the musical life of his native Scotland, as he has the versatility to improvise on any theme, in any key and in any given style. In this session, Richard will share some ideas and activities for including improvisation within your instrumental lessons.

Coaching String Ensembles with Juan-Miguel Hernandez Saturday 2 October 4.30-5.30pm UK Time Chamber music is at the forefront of Juan-Miguel’s career. He was a founder and member of the Harlem Quartet from 2006 to 2012 after which he joined the legendary Fine Arts Quartet from 2013 until 2018. He is a also founder and member of the "Trio Virado" (Flute, Viola, Guitar) as well as the "Boreal Trio" (Clarinet, Viola, Piano), both specializing in the creation of new repertoire. In this session, we will be discussing key techniques for coaching young string ensembles.

The First Lesson – Brass with Arlene Macfarlane Saturday 2 October 4.30-5.30pm UK Time With a passion for music education, Arlene has held teaching posts for all of the Ayrshire Music Services and currently works for East Ayrshire Music Service.

In this session, Arlene will be working with brass teachers on getting started with new students, including a discussion on the first lesson, setting up for success and utilising a range of resources to support new starters.

Choosing Repertoire by Composers of Colour with Clifton Harrison Sunday 3 October 12-1pm UK Time As a researcher, one of the areas Clifton focuses on is Black, Asian and ethnically diverse classical and contemporary composers/sound artists. In this talk, Clifton will be exploring how we select repertoire for our students and how we can diversify and expand these choices.

Supporting Students with Auditions and Performances with Francis Cummings Sunday 3 October 1.30-2.30pm UK Time In this session, Francis will lead a discussion on preparation for auditions and performance both practically and psychologically. This session aims to be a space for teachers to share ideas and ask questions to build a toolkit of strategies to support pupils with these moments in their learning journeys.

Young People’s Learning Styles with Naveed Idrees OBE and Shakira Afzal Sunday 3 October 3-4pm UK Time Join Naveed Idrees and Shakira Afzal, Head and Deputy Head Teacher of Feversham Primary Academy, for a discussion on young people’s learning styles.

Every young person has different learning preferences. In this session we'll be focusing on understanding the seven main learning styles and how to identify the ways in which young people learn. We’ll be understanding how these different ways of learning can be catered for and applied in both the primary classroom and in individual or small group instrumental tuition.

SATURDAY 16 AND SUNDAY 17 OCTOBER Conducting and Directing Rehearsals with Natalia Luis-Bassa Saturday 16 October 12-1pm UK Time Conductor Natalia Luis-Bassa has worked with many youth organisations including National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, National Youth Orchestra of Scotland Junior Orchestra and was conductor of the Advanced Orchestra on our inaugural Benedetti Sessions in 2020. In this session, Natalia will work with instrumental teachers on understanding the basics of conducting and leading rehearsals including discussions on score preparation and rehearsal technique.

Why Teach? A Discussion on Philosophies, Pedagogy & Methodology with Koen Rens Saturday 16 October 12-1pm UK Time Koen has a thriving violin studio, is a leading pedagogue and expert in the Suzuki method (he is the current Chair of the European Suzuki Association).

He teaches violin and conducts the Symphony Orchestra at the Academy of Music in Turnhout, Belgium.

In this session, we’ll be looking at various philosophies and pedagogies, considering why we teach, why we choose to teach certain repertoire or techniques at certain points and what are our goals, aspirations and wishes for our students.

Buzzing and Breathing (Brass) with Arlene Macfarlane Saturday 16 October 1.30-2.30pm UK Time In this session, Arlene will be working with brass teachers on ways to develop buzzing and breathing with students from beginners to more advanced players.

Teaching Tone Production (Flute Teachers) with Katherine Bryan Saturday 16 October 1.30-2.30pm UK Time Katherine is Principal Flute of the RSNO and lecturer in flute at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and Chetham's School of Music in Manchester. In this session, we’ll be sharing ideas on how to develop tone production in young flautists from beginners to more advanced players.

Education for Happiness with Gabriel Bolkosky Saturday 16 October 4.30-5.30pm UK Time “Connection was the ultimate goal and one that would lead to happiness in my music making, and by extension, my life.”

In this session, Gabriel Bolkosky, violinist, teacher and founder of Education for Happiness will talk with us about serving the community through warm hearted and compassionate music education.

The approach of Education for Happiness focuses on the character and well-being of the teacher and learner, leading to a better educated and happier society. Gabriel will talk about following the traditions of great educational systems with influence from multiple philosophies of education.

Creative Teaching: Developing Aural Skills in Young Musicians with Jo Bradley Sunday 17 October 12-1pm UK Time In this session, we will be exploring ways to develop aural skills in young musicians with double bassists, primary music teacher and Kodaly specialist, Jo Bradley.

Group Teaching with Arlene Macfarlane and Stewart Wilson Sunday 17 October 1.30-2.30pm UK Time Both Arlene and Stewart spend much of their working lives teaching group lessons in local authority, charity and independent settings. In this session, we’ll be looking both the positives and negatives of group teaching. We’ll be covering strategies for teaching groups (all instruments), developing healthy habits in the early stages, the first 6 weeks in practice, ensemble playing, motivating beginners and the power of praise.

Performance Psychology with Lee Holland Sunday 17 October 3-4pm UK Time Founder of Mental Note, Lee Holland has been fascinated by performance psychology throughout her career. Combining her experience of performance as a performing musician, training in mental skills, coaching and mindfulness, Lee has a unique perspective to make connections between her experiences as a performer and the experiences of those who she works with.

In this session, we’ll be focusing on exploring what is performance psychology and beginning to look at developing a psychological tool-kit that you can use to support your students to perform more consistently in pressurised situations. The main aim of this session is to equip you, as an instrumental teacher, to support your young students with performance.

Inheriting Students & Readdressing Technique (Upper Strings) with Andrea Gajic In this session, violinist Andrea Gajic will lead a discussion focused on inheriting students. We’ll be looking at fostering a smooth transition process between teachers at all levels of learning, the relationship between teacher, pupil and their family and how to approach the readdressing of technique in inherited students in a supportive, positive and proactive way.

Amy Beth is a soloist, chamber musician and educator and has performed numerous orchestral and recital appearances across the US and Europe. Her appearances are always eagerly anticipated: The Washington Post hailed her as "having the stuff of greatness."

In this session, Amy Beth will be sharing her personal experiences both as a performer and a teacher with participants and there will be plenty of time for questions.

Practical Tips for Freelance Musicians with Claire Whitson Wednesday 6 October 7.30-8.30pm UK Time Join double bassist, Claire Whitson as she leads a session covering practical tips for freelance musicians and musicians starting out in the industry. Performance Psychology for Students with Lee Holland Wednesday 13 October 6-7pm UK Time Join Lee Holland of Mental Note Performance as we explore performance psychology. During sessions you as a performer will build a psychological tool-kit that you can use to perform more consistently in pressurised situations. As you practise these skills you will feel more in control of your preparation and delivery, and strengthen confidence.

Introduction to Transposition with Richard Michael (this session is open to young musicians age 15+) Wednesday 13 October 6-7pm UK Time In this session, join jazz pianist and educator Richard Michael as he helps us to explore and understand transposition starting right back at the basics.

Entering the Profession – a panel chat with professionals from across the music performance and education worlds hosted by Lucy Drever (this session is open to young musicians age 15+) Wednesday 13 October 7.30-8.30pm UK Time Hosted by creative leader, Lucy Drever, in this panel chat we will be exploring the many routes into the musical performing and educating professions, portfolio careers, creating your own opportunities, innovation, auditions and performances, and the highs and lows of a career in the profession.

Guest panellists include Jessie Maryon Davies, Katherine Bryan and Clifton Harrison.

Approaching Bach’s Cello Suites with David Watkin (this session is open to young musicians age 15+) Wednesday 20 October 6-7pm UK Time Join David Watkin, renowned cellist and interpreter of baroque music, as we explore understanding and approaching the incredible Cello Suites of J.S. Bach.

Unaccompanied Bach has taken him all over Europe, from the Palace of Frederick the Great at Potsdam to the Prague Spring Festival, and, as part of Sir John Eliot Gardiner's Bach Cantata Pilgrimage, included performances sitting by the font in which Bach was baptised. Highly unusually, his recording of the complete Suites won both a Gramophone and BBC Music Magazine Awards.

Creativity, Innovation & Workshop Delivery with Lucy Drever (this session is open to young musicians age 15+) Wednesday 20 October 7.30-8.30pm UK Time Lucy is one of the UK’s foremost creative leaders presenting and delivering workshops and family and school concerts for orchestras including RSNO, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia, and presenting concerts at venues including Wigmore Hall.

In this session, Lucy will discuss with you the skills and qualities required to create and deliver an innovative and successful workshop. She will share with us her experiences presenting and hosting, and work with you to unlock your creativity and imagination in preparing and planning workshops, narrated performances or teaching resources.
