2017 LETTER FROM THE BOARD

Welcome to the 2017 BendFilm Festival, a celebration of independent cinema!

W

e are beyond thrilled to bring you the 14th Annual BendFilm Festival. BendFilm’s core mission is to bring people together through the unique power of independent film. We want to start conversations, celebrate the beauty of our town, and inspire action on the issues most important to us. This year we watched our community unite in dark theaters as they cheered for leading characters–both real and fictional–wept in empathy for their stories, and marveled at the inventive drama they saw on screen. This festival allows our community to recreate these experiences (and so much more) in only 4 days.

6

BendFilm.org

We owe all of this to the brave filmmakers who risk so much to tell stories that make us see the world in a new and hopeful light. Please take time to thank them as you see them throughout the festival. Please also thank our sponsors who invest so much to showcase these filmmakers. Top among them is our founding sponsor, Brooks Resources, who is a leader in the ever-expanding cultural community of Bend. We want to acknowledge our other top sponsors: The Starview Foundation, The Oxford Hotel, The Source Weekly, The Old Mill District, Hand in Hand Productions, Visit Bend, Cascade A&E, Combined Communications, The Horizon Broadcast Group, OPB, Regal Entertainment Group, Zolo Media,

Caldera Arts, InFocus Eye Care, Worthy Brewing, Dr. Andy Higgins, BigFoot Beverages, The Oregon Film Office, BendBroadband, G5, Deschutes Brewery, Independent WOMEN for Independent Film, SGA Accountants and Old Back Nine–all who share in Brooks Resources’ belief in the life-transforming power of the arts. We also would like to thank our grantors: the Bend Cultural Tourism Fund, The Roundhouse Foundation, the Oregon Cultural Trust and Oregon Arts Commission for their dedication to ensure the arts in Central Oregon flourish. None of this would be possible without our core of 250 BendFilm volunteers! Year after year, our volunteers prove that Central Oregon is dedicated to storytelling, independent cinema, and independent ideas. Our volunteers prove that when a small town comes together, big things can happen. Our success is only possible through your continued enthusiasm, support, and participation. It is a privilege to present this festival each year. We hope you enjoy the show!

his 2017 festival tagline developed by Bend’s Astir Agency is incredibly timely. Things come at us so fast now that it often seems impossible to contextualize in order to get a broader picture of what is really going on in the world. History, bellwether current events and glimpses of the future need to be packaged for us to see a way forward. The stories we are showcasing in the next four days will either provide you with a deeper understanding of our current times or a glorious escape from it all. These stories were carefully selected by our extremely dedicated volunteer screening committee led by Festival Programmer–and 2007 Director–Erik Jambor. They have made incredibly tough decisions to whittle down 1,100 film submissions to the 105 films they believe are perfect for what our audience wants to see right now. We fully understand that there are many more films than you have the capacity to see. We at BendFilm suggest that you focus on the few that pop out in the Guide, get tickets and just go for it. There is at least one film here that will speak to you in a way you have never heard because the program includes stories told from so many unique perspectives–especially the perspectives of women. Women filmmakers represent 45% of the competition film lineup. This, of course, makes sense given that half the human population are women, but mainstream Hollywood’s percentage is only about 10% comparatively. That is why we celebrate “independent” film–the genre that drives

change in this 100 year-old artform. Film exhibitors owe our audience the opportunity to see stories from both male and female points of view. We celebrate the daring artists who are presenting their very first features here at the festival. They, too, are on their way to promising careers that re-invent storytelling structure and conventions. In our second installment of the First Features program, we are hosting renowned director Peter Gilbert (Hoop Dreams) to honor those who are first entering the filmmaking fray and to hopefully encourage young audience members to take up the mantle. Yes, these four days will fly by as you wistfully jump from film to film, but make sure you take the time to process everything you experience–from the stories that affect you, the conversations you have with friends and strangers, and the connections you make with filmmakers. Create a story of your experience over the course of this festival. And, most importantly, remember that you are not just an audience member observing what’s on the screen. You are one of the main characters in this book we titled, The 14th Annual BendFilm Festival. Have an incredible time! Todd Looby Director BendFilm

OFFICIAL GUIDE

OCTOBER 12-15

As thousands of people flock to Central Oregon to enjoy the best in independent cinema, I’d like to take a moment to express my pride in our state’s rich film history. We have a lot to celebrate in this state from the classic Westerns filmed here, to the talented storytellers inspired to work here, to festivals that discover new artists, and the art house theaters that give these stories a platform to connect with audiences.

14TH ANNUAL

Welcome to the 14th annual BendFilm Festival.

OFFICIAL GUIDE

Letter from The Governor

BendFilm is one of our best showcases of Oregon’s filmmaking and storytelling talent. For the last 14 years, the festival has grown into a center point of Oregon’s creative media industry. Not only does BendFilm bring the creative community together, it actively cultivates the next generation of filmmakers who will continue to uphold the renegade spirit of independent storytelling. BendFilm’s annual Festival in October proves to emerging filmmakers that stories don’t necessarily need to fit the mold and that audiences are hungry for original points of view. Dan and I look forward to this festival every October. But, we also keep a close eye on the events and talent BendFilm celebrates throughout the year as it continues to support brave, fresh voices. Thank you for coming together to share in these new stories and celebrate the inspiration that comes from bold storytelling. For those of you in the creative community thinking of creating your own work check out our statewide incentive programs at oregonfilm.org. While you’re visiting BendFilm for the festival, I hope you’ll get out and discover Central Oregon too - it’s a place of countless Cinematic Moments.

Sincerely,

Governor Kate Brown

Indie Film: A Rich Kid’s Game? Friday, October 13 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

It’s been said that indie film is a rich kid’s game. With filmmaking tools now more accessible than ever before, is that still the case – and if so, how can we open up the field to allow a wider, more diverse range of voices to participate?

Film Fatales: Directing Feature Film Saturday, October 14 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Movements like Film Fatales are rapidly changing the conversation about the film industry’s gross gender disparity despite its reluctance to get with the times. Join us to hear how these female feature filmmakers took their films from idea to reality, and how indie film is making Hollywood take notice on gender. Founded in New York City by BendFilm alumna Leah Meyerhoff, with chapters sprouting across the US, Film Fatales is a collective of female filmmakers who have written or directed at least one feature narrative or documentary film. By offering a space for mentorship, peer networking and direct participation, we hope to promote the creation of more stories by and about women. Panelists include: Skye Borgman (Forever ‘B’), Catherine Eaton (The Sounding), Renée Felice Smith (The Relationtrip), and Leah Warshawski (Big Sonia).

First Features, Then What?

Saturday, October 14 12:45 PM – 1:45 PM

Q&A with Fox Searchlight’s Jill Gwen

Taking that big leap into the great unknown world of feature filmmaking is an incredibly difficult step. Even some our most cherished directors often failed miserably in their first attempt. The filmmakers on this panel somehow got it right in their first try. Join us to hear how these filmmakers assembled the courage and resources to make their first features and their plans for making a career in film.

Looking for honest answers on how to start or advance your career in the dog-eat-dog Hollywood system? Join us for an intimate Q&A with Jill Gwen, Senior Vice President and Head of Finance & Operations of Fox Searchlight Pictures from 1996-2016.

Moderated by: Peter Gilbert (Hoop Dreams, Prefontaine); panelists include: Jamie Brooks (Bomb City), Kate Brooks (The Last Animals), Josh Crockett (Dr. Brinks & Dr. Brinks), and Jen Heck (The Promised Band).

Conversation led by: Michael Galinsky (All the Rage).

14TH ANNUAL

In a word, we believe in the transformative power of the arts. Bob Reinninger

OCTOBER 12-15

Perhaps the most meaningful thing you can do with success is share it. And when you do that with care and conviction, giving can be an art form – one Raymond James has been practicing since 1962. Today, we carry on the charitable legacy of our founder Bob James in words and actions as we seek to go forward by giving back. FOR 12 YEARS, WE HAVE BEEN PROUD TO SUPPORT BENDFILM.

URSDAY | bendsource.com

Each year, the BendFilm Festival discovers new filmmaking talent–programming many feature films by first-time filmmakers who display mature and original filmmaking technique and ability.

This year we focus on two filmmakers who made a big mid-career shift to tackle a First Feature in another genre. Peter Gilbert and Steve James rocketed to acclaim with the Sundance premiere of a genre-defining documentary, Hoop Dreams in 1994. In 1996, they were presented with an opportunity to make another sports-centric film. This time in the narrative world. They jumped at the chance, but knew it was a big gamble. The film they rolled the dice on was Prefontaine (1997) which cast Jared Leto in his first major feature film lead role as Oregon’s favorite running son, Steve Prefontaine. Upon its release, the film received a big “Two Thumbs Up” endorsement from Siskel and Ebert and enjoyed widespread critical recognition. The only hiccup was that there was another Steve Prefontaine film, Without Limits, scheduled to be released at virtually the same time. That film was helmed by Chinatown scribe Robert Towne and starred Billy Crudup–whose career was fast on the rise. 20 years later, both Duck fans and cinephiles alike still argue about which film is better. After the screening, Peter will participate in an onstage conversation about taking the giant leap from independent documentary filmmaking to helming a studio-backed narrative feature for $8 million in only two years. Peter will discuss the hurdles (pun intended) he and Steve faced and how they reacted when they found out a competing Steve Prefontaine film was in the works. Peter will also settle the 20-year dispute about which film is better.

Prefontaine opens in the 1960s, with Steve (Jared Leto) as a kid whose short stature and “bad hand-eye coordination’’ make him the most hapless player on the football team. Determined to be good at something, he turns to track and uses sheer determination to win. Soon he’s being scouted by the legendary Oregon coach Bill Bowerman (R. Lee Ermey), who manufactures track shoes in his garage, using his wife’s waffle iron to mold the rubber treads. Bowerman goes on to co-found Nike, and Pre goes on to hold almost every American record at the longer distances. - Roger Ebert.

As a band, we play our best when we listen to each other. Listening connects us with our intuition, our humanity. It connects us with the effortless knowing of right action and perfect timing. It is a gesture of mutual generosity— one person brings her voice, or a melody into the shared space, and the rest of us, through our listening, join that offering. Future Filmmakers

3:30 PM Sun. 10/15 McMenamins Old St. Francis School Theatre The Future Filmmakers program will once again be hosted during the BendFilm Festival this year! The BendFilm Future Filmmakers program encourages youth to share their voices and talents through moving pictures. Now in its 11th year, Future Filmmakers was founded by Michelle Alvarado of Wahoo Films and has grown to become a very popular part of the festival. This Central Oregon video contest is open to students in grades five through 12– showcasing short films made in the last year. Each participant receives constructive criticism on their films from the Jury which includes 2017 festival filmmakers and jurors. Audience vote determines winners for each competition, who receive a cash prize.

BendFilm.org

BendFilm debuted a powerful documentary, This is Home– created in collaboration with Oregon Adaptive Sports (OAS) and directed by Bend’s Joshua Milton–at our annual fundraiser on June 3, 2017. The documentary features the inspiring stories of three incredible OAS athletes and how OAS programs and volunteers change lives. BendFilm’s mission is to strengthen the Central Oregon community through the power of film and we need your support to continue and expand that mission. Make sure to visit bendfilm.org or oregonadaptivesports.org to view this powerful film. And save the date for next year’s “Power of Film” Fundraiser on June 2, 2018!

Starting in 2016, Caldera Arts graciously donated one Artist in Residence vacancy to a filmmaker selected by BendFilm. This filmmaker in residence will work on his or her project(s) and mentor Warm Springs students during Spring Break. Once the month-long residency is over, the filmmaker will present his or her work at Caldera’s residency showcase and at a BendFilm-sponsored special engagement. The winning applicant in our second year will be announced this Fall!

More about the program Caldera’s Artists in Residence program offers the gift of time and space on the eastern slopes of Oregon’s Cascade Range. Month long stays offer private accommodations, 24-hour access to studios and a weekly meal. By design, residents form a small community of seven to 12 artists, depending on the group. Community outreach and collaborations are encouraged. Caldera is a catalyst for the transformation of underserved youth through innovative, year-round art and environmental programs. Check back in Spring 2018 for the 2019 application deadline!

BendFilm Year-Round Programs BendFilm’s popular Year-Round offerings began its second year with a sold out McMenamins re-screening of the gently blasphemous, and very funny THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT, as part of the “In Case You Missed It…” series. Festival Director Todd Looby said “It’s impossible to see each festival film in just four days, and every year there are a few films where people literally beg us to re-screen during the year. This was one of those films.” For February, year-round programmer Ellen Shelton scheduled the powerful documentary DAUGHTERS OF THE FOREST, another 2016 festival pick. Amanda Stuermer, founder of Bend’s World Muse, collaborated on the event. Film director Samantha Grant also attended, from the Bay Area, fielding questions about her seven-year-long project following a group of girls growing up in a threatened forest reserve in Paraguay.

The films were screened on August 7th at a mini film festival. Fest-goers were treated to an inspiring mix of cinematic styles – all exploring the theme of “The Other Side.” Filmmakers competed for the chance to screen their film at the 2017 BendFilm Festival. Titles included: The Other Side, The Crossing, Change Me Back, Wink, Just Chill, Break on Through, Swish, Sticker Shock, The Wrong Side and Be Nice. The Jury Award went to Tyler Morden’s team for Sticker Shock and the Audience Award went to Brent Barnett’s team for Wink.

In July, in the heart of cycling season, BendFilm presented two screenings of the moving and inspirational documentary RISING FROM ASHES, about the creation of a team of scrappy cyclists born out of the devastating 1994 Rwandan genocide. This special event featured riders from Team Rwanda, in Bend to race the multi-day Cascade Cycling Classic, on only their second trip to the U.S. from Africa. Bend local and pro mountain biker Adam Bucklin helped bring the team to Oregon and participated with them in conversations following the film screenings. “In Case You Missed It…” returned in August with an encore of the 2016 festival rave HUNKY DORY, a dazzling example of independent filmmaking: passion and talent on a shoestring budget, shot in 10 days. Six-foot-five writer and lead actor Tomas Pais traveled from his home in Los Angeles to attend and charmed the audience with his delightful takes on filmmaking and life. And finally, BendFilm’s series of classic films, Second Sunday Cinema, returns this fall with a quartet of beloved films from across world cinema. The program will feature Jean Renoir’s 1937 anti-war classic LA GRANDE ILLUSION (second Sunday in September); Ingmar Bergman’s harrowing Norse ballad THE VIRGIN SPRING, from 1960 (October); Russian great Andre Tarkovsky’s World War II drama IVAN’S CHILDHOOD (November); and, in December, Charlie Chaplin’s last silent film, CITY LIGHTS, from 1931, surely the finest example of Chaplin’s comic genius. All will be screened for the residents of Touchmark at Mt. Bachelor Village. Look for similar programs with enriching and provocative content to continue in 2018.

BendFilm and the Volcanic Theatre Pub hosted an evening of short films on May 22. THE BEST OF THE 43RD NW FILMMAKERS TOUR featured eight fascinating shorts (from Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, B.C., and Missoula, MT) that Ben Popp, of the Northwest Film Center, said, “we hope will whet your appetite and encourage you to seek out and appreciate visionary work wherever you can find it.” Popp and several of the independent filmmakers were on hand to discuss the films.

Earlier this summer, BendFilm partnered with ScaleHouse for the third annual 72-Hour Filmmaker Scramble. This event challenged filmmakers of any age or skill-level to create original short films in just 72 hours based on the surprise theme of “The Other Side.” The format proved to be a perfect push for several aspiring filmmakers to explore diverse perspectives while jumping into the filmmaking fray.

BendFilm.org

April brought a special screening of the award-winning adventure documentary THE GREAT ALONE. Writer/director Greg Kohs’ 2015 feature doc is about obsession, love, fathers and sons, mothers and sons, and one of the greatest and most cinematically stunning adventures on earth, the Iditarod dog sled race. Three time Iditarod competitor, and Central Oregon native, Rachael Scdoris (whose family runs the sled-dog concession at Mt. Bachelor) brought one of her lead dogs to the Q&A following the movie, to the delight of the packed crowd at McMenamins.
