The abundance of beauty we see both in each other and the physical world is everywhere you look. Around every corner there is someone waiting to smile, lend you a hand, understand who you are, and together build a world that is more honest, kind, and authentic. The scenic beauty of Central Oregon also reminds us that the natural world is here—inviting and full of wonder. Endless possibilities surround us if we dare to explore each other, the world, and the unknown. We at BendFilm do what we do because we believe in the abundance of this beauty. The beauty that moves us, defnes us, and unites us. We do not hold this feeling of beauty and connection unaware of recent global and, especially, local events. Neither in the denial of the lack of equity in the world, nor in the powerful forces that cause suffering. We feel this because we know that there are many people in our community, in the independent flm industry, in the greater arts community, and all over the world who also believe deeply that beauty is abundant when we choose to pursue it.

FESTIVAL

Festival is a celebration and an escape, but is not a withdrawal. It is a departure from the daily distractions of the news and social media feeds we entertain to keep us from becoming overwhelmed. It is an invitation to a world where characters are exposed and vulnerable—and yet are stronger for it. If we have the courage to do the same, we can create a better community.

Each year this Festival reminds us that true seekers of beauty are so vastly in the majority no matter what those daily distractions tell us. This Festival is only possible because of our community of sponsors, members, donors, flm lovers and because of the brave flmmakers who continue to dream under the most diffcult circumstances.

You are all here because you feel the same as we do. This is the community of which we speak, and we will expand this beautiful feedback loop as wide as we can knowing that there are so many more of us than those who want something different or something less.

A CELEBRATION OF INDEPENDENT CINEMA

LETTER FROM KATE BROWN, OREGON GOVERNOR

Welcome to the 19th Annual BendFilm Festival!

The State of Oregon celebrates and supports artists and the arts because we value the important role that the arts play in bringing people together from the valley to the high desert, and from urban centers to rural communities.

The arts help us navigate confusing and challenging times by refecting our world back to us in ways we may not normally consider.

The arts also add signifcantly to our regional economies; they create and sustain jobs and provide us with deep and meaningful experiences.

This Festival is that invitation to connect

. To engage in the lives of those we see onscreen, with the flmmakers who felt so moved to tell their stories, and to those who sit among us in theaters or virtually at home. Meaningful connection is only possible when we frst acknowledge mutual hardship and then attempt reconciliation with empathy, laughter, vibrancy and celebration. Yes, this

You all give us an enormous opportunity to host this Festival, and what will take place is our gift in return. We hope you will accept this invitation and gift, leaning in with the full weight of your head and heart to connect with us and each other. We certainly will.

Thank you for being here. Enjoy the Festival and each other!

The BendFilm Team

As we reemerge from the challenges of recent times to visit with our neighbors and engage in dialogue about issues and opportunities open to us all, the arts help inform our conversations.

BendFilm is Oregon’s frst and only “Academy Qualifying Film Festival” which elevates the rich quality of Oregon flm initiatives to the national level where it rightfully belongs.

We welcome any and all creators to take advantage of the natural beauty and the hard-working people in the flm industry to create more flms in Oregon. To learn more about our statewide flmmaking incentive programs, visit oregonflm.org and consider shooting your next masterpiece right here in Oregon.

By attending this festival, you are embracing positivity, celebrating diversity, and setting the tone to build a much stronger Oregon.

Thank you and enjoy the festival!

Sincerely,

LETTER FROM INDIGENOUS PROGRAMMER, LARONN KATCHIA

Greetings,

I am beyond excited about the Indigenous representation at this year’s BendFilm Festival. When we created the Indigenous flms program in 2014, I had no idea it would become a yearly celebration of our presence in cinema. Growing up on the reservation in Warm Springs, we only had a few flms that we would watch over and over again, because that is simply all we had. With the Indigenous flms program at the BendFilm Festival, we have the opportunity for native youth to see themselves represented on the big screen. This wasn’t possible only a few years ago. With this program, we will let our presence be known.

This year we will host Gary Farmer and Tatanka Means, who are both legendary actors in their own right. We grew up watching Powwow Highway and Smoke Signals, both flms starring the powerhouse that is Gary Farmer. Tatanka Means is a rising star, comedian, and actor, fresh off the sets of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon

and Hulu’s Reservation Dogs.

“We used HSS for our home/office audio and video set up and the work they did was amazing. Not only are they very knowledgeable about the products they work with, but they also have a great deal of experience and expertise in customizing the systems to match the settings they are going into. On top of the technical aspect, the HSS team was very friendly, professional, and it is clear they all take pride in their work. We would not hesitate to recommend them and will definitely use them again.”

The Sexy Side of Filmmaking: A Panel of Industry Insiders

Moderated by Todd Looby, BendFilm Executive Director

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7 @ 11:45 A.M.

When most people think about flmmaking, they envision being a director running the show and working with glamorous actors. There’s nothing entirely wrong with that image, but the real joy in flmmaking is negotiating good distribution terms, working with agents, navigating location issues, getting permits, and creating great subtitles for that distribution deal! Perhaps we have things skewed a bit… This is a panel made up of people in the know, who may not make those things necessarily “sexy,” but they will make them a much more enjoyable part of the process of getting your flm out into the world. Don’t miss your chance to meet these leaders in the industry. Panelists include Alan Bell (Cinetyp, Inc.), Michelle Damis (SAG-AFTRA

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7 @ 3:45 P.M.

Sundance enjoys mythic queen/kingmaking status in the independent flm world. Approximately 15,000 flmmakers submit each year for their chance at reaching independent flm’s grandest stage. Only a few hundred will make it. Should the rest pack it up, re-think their career choice and artistic pursuit? Or…do we perhaps put too much emphasis on making it into big fests like Sundance? Join us for a conversation with former Sundance Director John Cooper to hear the inside stories that both give this legend credence as well as show all of the great opportunities out there for independent flmmakers beyond big-name festivals.

BIPOC WOMEN FILM PRODUCTION GRANT

SUPPORTING BIPOC WOMEN FILMMAKERS

BendFilm’s grant will provide a BIPOC woman artist with $10,000 toward making their short or feature flm.

This grant is made possible by the The Roundhouse Foundations, the Starview Foundation, Oregon Cultural Trust, NewSun Energy, Braemar Charitable Trust and Infocus Eye Care.

On-screen representation affects cultural understanding of BIPOC, women, and LGBTQ+ characters, and barriers need to be broken down until equal representation is achieved on-screen and behind the camera. BendFilm’s grant supports storytellers who are working to tell creative and complex stories told from a point of view that is unique and authentic.

INDEPENDENT WOMEN FOR INDEPENDENT FILM

THE INDIEWOMEN MOVEMENT STARTED OUT AS 100 WOMEN DONATING $100 TO SUPPORT INDEPENDENT FILM AND CONTINUES TO GROW.

Independent Women for Independent Film was formed as a way to strengthen the bonds of leading women in the arts and business and support female indie flmmakers at the BendFilm Festival. Today, the IndieWomen movement—100 women donating $100— continues to grow and expand its support for female flmmakers.

Created in honor of the late Pamela Hulse Andrews, a pioneer of arts and culture in Bend, the IndieWoman of the Year Award carries on Pamela’s legacy. The award is presented annually to a female flmmaker who demonstrates an exceptional passion for independent flm, bravely shares their authentic voice, and makes extraordinary contributions to an independent body of work.

Don’t miss

Julia in its world premiere during the Local Focus Narrative Shorts program (page 60).

“When I wrote my frst short flm Julia

, the idea of fully producing the flm seemed impossible. Receiving the Tell Your Story grant through Oregon Made Creative Foundation enabled Julia to launch into pre-production and fnally allowed me to tell my mother’s story of hardship growing up in a South Korean orphanage. After flming, I received BendFilm’s BIPOC Women Film Production Grant, which provided the funding we needed to fnish up post-production. Making this flm would not have been possible without these grants. I’m so thankful for the support I’ve been given to amplify underrepresented voices, and think it is crucial to uplift other flmmakers to do the same through flm grants.”

GRANT PANEL

This year, fve to ten fnal candidates will pitch their projects live to a panel of industry professionals during the Festival. The panel will decide the winner of the $10,000 production grant and may provide mentorship during the flmmaking process at panelists’ discretion and interest. B ENDFILMS IS PROUD TO SPOTLIGHT ACADEMY AWARD-NOMINATED WRITER AND DIRECTOR TAMARA JENKINS AS THE 2022 INDIEWOMAN OF THE YEAR.

Tamara Jenkins is a rare flmmaker who has a knack for fnding a balance of humor and desperation in characters we instantly warm to. We always feel personally comforted by the fact that her characters exist in this world, and that Jenkins exists in today’s world of indie flmmaking despite working with stars like Laura Linney, Natasha Lyonne, Alan Arkin, Kathryn Hahn, Paul Giamatti, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. For her uncompromisingly independent attitude to flmmaking and ongoing inspiration to us all, we’re honored to name Tamara Jenkins IndieWoman of the Year.

Tamara is the writer and director of the flms Private Life,

The Savages, and

Slums of Beverly Hills as well as several award winning shorts. Her flms have screened at the New York Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, Cannes, and Sundance. Among the honors she has received are an Academy Award nomination, an Independent Spirit Award, a Los Angeles Film Critics prize, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Tamara attended NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where she received her MFA and met her husband, the screenwriter, Jim Taylor, with whom she occasionally writes. Jenkins lives in NYC with Jim and their daughter, Mia.

“[Tamara Jenkins’] microscopic looks at human beings in all their complexities and vanities are vital to the cinematic landscape. Her stories are not didactic. They are observational and communal—a hug, not a fnger-point. She is scrupulous not just with the female character closest in age to her; Jenkins takes years to write a script because she wants to walk in the shoes of every character until she gets them right. (As Philip Seymour Hoffman, Linney’s costar in The Savages, once said, Jenkins is ‘not a compromiser.’)”

“Legendary drummers and what it’s like to grow up with them—what’s not to like!”

DIRECTED BY JUSTIN KREUTZMANN

After the Grateful Dead’s fnal 50th anniversary shows in 2015, flmmaker Justin Kreutzmann (son of the Dead’s drummer, Bill Kreutzmann) realized that, for the frst time, he and his dad could forge a relationship outside the shadow of the band. In the hopes of better understanding both his father and the instrument that has defned his life, Justin interviews the world’s greatest drummers, and along the way examines the personal struggles that so many of these musicians and their families have faced, the nature of how music passes from generation to generation, and the essential role that drumming plays in human life.

DIRECTED BY REBECCA HALPERN

In the 2000s, chef Charlie Trotter was the toast of Chicago, and his eponymous restaurant was one of the world’s top fne-dining destinations. A gastronomic revolutionary and a culinary bad-boy, Trotter paved the way for the likes of Anthony Bourdain and Gordon Ramsay, yet his tempestuous, competitive nature alienated many. With never-before-seen archival material and new interviews with those who loved and loathed Trotter, who died from a stroke in 2013 at age 54, this absorbing, unvarnished profle chronicles the passions of a master chef and the consequences of pursuing perfection at all costs.

MOVIES IN THE PARK

THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN WATCHING MOVIES OUTSIDE IN THE SUMMER.

BendFilm, Bend Park & Recreation District, and the WHH Foundation hosted another successful FREE Movies in the Parks program over the summer—and it was our biggest yet. We had great crowds, played fun games before screenings, and had beautiful families joining us as we watched the stars and the best family flms available.

A big thanks to Bend Park & Rec for donating the parks, the WHH Foundation for funding this effort, and Audio Visions Plus for tackling the elements to ensure the show went on.

THAT BENDFILM SHOW

EACH YEAR, BENDFILM RALLIES SUPPORT TO CONTINUE OUR MISSION OF USING FILM’S UNIQUE POWER TO BUILD COMMUNITY.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for 2022’s That BendFilm Show to kick-off the Festival season and raise money for the Festival Filmmakers travel fund. This inaugural event celebrated our ability to gather in person once again and showcased the amazing talent of the BendFilm staff and key community members.

We’re grateful for the support of the community that values indie flms and stories that inspire. BendFilm cannot do what we do—from screening great flms and important documentaries year-round to supporting up-and-coming indie flmmakers to inspiring the next generation of creative storytellers—without your support.

The live variety, game, late-night, video, music, dance show will be back in 2023!
