ABOUT THE CAST

JOE ANDERSON, JR. (Himself)is a native Dallasite who has worked as an artist and dedicated countless hours to the cultural scene in Austin for the past 15 years to improve the city for Black Queer residents. As the Director of Community Engagement at Texas Health Action (THA), his primary work is focused on reducing HIV disparities, cultivating relationships with community members, and developing strategies to reduce stigma surrounding HIV and sexual health. Outside of his role at THA, Joe is a cultural curator, artist, and community organizer in Central Texas. With poetry as his primary artistic medium, he creates productions and events that center on the experiences of Black Queer people, while challenging old and antiquated ideals the larger community may have about Black Queer culture. By fusing together poetry, music, performance, and storytelling, he creates productions that instill a sense of pride while building and creating community. Aside from trying to save the world, he loves theatre, playing volleyball, enjoying every brunch Austin has to offer, and asking the age-old question, “What would Beyonce do?”

A WORD FROM OUR PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE

To our dear patrons,

I’m reaching out to you with a simple yet powerful message and an ask for a donation. A donation to Bishop Arts Theatre Center isn’t just a gift to one theatre it’s an investment in the lives of artists, storytellers, and dreamers who find a home here.

At BishopArts Theatre Center, we believe in the magic that happens when artists are given space to explore, take risks, and tell their stories. For countless artists like me, this theatre has been more than a stage; it has been a place of transformation and growth. It’s a sanctuary where creativity is not only welcomed but celebrated.

Since I first set foot in this theatre, it has been my constant, my foundation, and my family. When artists have a home, they can focus on their craft, pushing boundaries and bringing new voices to the forefront. BishopArts Theatre Center has done just that for me, providing a space where my stories can come to life in ways I never imagined. The benefits to me professionally and personally are evident. From my beginnings at BishopArts Theatre Center, I have been able to see award-winning productions of my plays mounted across the country, have worked in Hollywood, and am able to work full-time as an artist. I want to ensure this gift continues to be available for others, too.

Supporting BishopArts Theatre Center means you’re helping us build a community where artists can thrive. It means you’re helping sustain a place where stories that might never have been told are shared with the world, where emerging voices are heard, and where everyone no matter their background has the opportunity to connect with art that resonates. Imagine the impact you can make by helping us provide that first break, that first stage, that first warm welcome to an artist who needs it most. I am proof of that impact. Your donations directly ensured that I got a chance to participate in the theatre.

So, I invite you to join us in this mission. Help us to continue offering a home to artists, and let’s make sure that this theatre remains a beacon of hope, creativity, and inspiration. Your support, in any amount, can be the bridge between a dream and its realization. Together, let’s keep the spirit of Bishop Arts Theatre Center alive for generations to come.

Thank you for believing in the power of art, and for helping us, through your donation, to create a space where it can flourish.

With gratitude, Franky D. Gonzalez
