A WORD FROM OUR PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE

Dear Friends,

Spoiler: I’m going to ask for a donation, but before I do, I want to share something important with you.

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to achieve quite a bit winning awards, landing prestigious artist residencies, and having my plays produced across the country. I’ve had the opportunity to work as a television writer for Netflix, Amazon, and Sony, and to develop my work in cities like New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Houston. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, but I know that none of it happened in isolation.

There’s no such thing as a singular talent who succeeds entirely on their own. Success requires a community a network of people who believe in you, who sacrifice for you, who cheer you on and support you every step of the way. At the heart of any artist’s journey is a community that nurtures and uplifts them. For me, that community has been the Bishop Arts Theatre Center.

Before the accolades, before Hollywood, before the awards, there was the Bishop Arts Theatre Center, believing in me when I was just a struggling artist. They were the first to encourage me, to give me a platform for my wildest ideas in theatre. Outside of my family, no place has been more instrumental to my success than BATC. For nearly a decade, this familia, led by Teresa Coleman Wash, has championed my work, encouraged me to pursue my dreams, and celebrated my successes as if they were their own. They welcomed me with open arms, broadened my horizons, and helped me become the artist I am today.

This is where I ask for your help. I’m asking you to support my community by donating to the Bishop Arts Theatre Center. We’re seeing theatres close their doors, communities lose vital resources, and artists left without a home. I often wonder where I would be without BATC. Would I have achieved the same success? Would I even have a fraction of what I have today? The answer is no.

For the last thirty years, BATC has been a home to artists, a pillar of the community that uplifts people of all backgrounds, ages, and perspectives. They gave me the opportunity to change my life, and now, more than ever, we need institutions like BATC to continue their critically important work. Your support ensures that someone like me someone who came from trailer parks and basements might have a chance. This isn’t just about supporting a theatre; it’s an investment in a better tomorrow, a vote of confidence in the South Dallas community, and a chance for a child to dream.

The myth of the solitary artist achieving greatness alone is just that a myth. But the truth of a community coming together to uplift one of its own is a reality we can all believe in. Thank you for being part of this amazing journey. Thank you for being my community. And thank you for your continued support.

Con amor, Franky D. Gonzalez
