Dear Parents and Carers As a very short term comes to a prompt end, I reflect back not only on the short term but also the five years that our outgoing year 11 have been with us. As a year group they have grown from boys and girls to young men and women, they display maturity and a wealth of potential for their future. We would like to take this moment to add to our assembly on Friday and say good luck, goodbye, but I hope not farewell! The very best of luck in your coming exams.

On the same note, I would like to congratulate the year 6 children on their maturity and diligence throughout their SATs week. They were so dedicated and focussed and a real credit to their parents and the school. Well done to you all!

I would hate to miss out our small, but perfectly formed, Sixth Form, who are also taking their final exams before embarking on their next steps into university.

Can I ask parents to keep an eye out for a number of events in school organised by the PTFA. As always, I keep stressing that we, as adults, must be vigilant and careful when dropping and collecting our pupils. Please do not park or drive on the pavements or place our pupils in danger.

Can I remind all parents that pupils should be dressed in school uniform all of the time, including black footwear. Secondary students should also have black trousers or skirt. Denim trousers or leggings are not allowed.

Finally, the summer term is always a time for us to reflect, review and celebrate all the achievements of our wonderful pupils. We hope that you will join us at all the key events we have over the term:  Induction Day 2nd July 2019  Sports Day 16th July 2019  Presentation Evening 4th July 2019 Have a great Bank Holiday and Whitsun break and see you all on Monday 3 rd June 2019.

Work Experience 2019 1st April – 5th April 2019 was a time when our year 10 students’ lives changed forever.

Over 130 students took part in one week of Work Experience in a variety of companies across Derby including GP Motors, GF Tomlinson, Baby People and Kier Construction. Our students transformed out of their comfort zones and took on job roles such as Mechanics, Engineers, Artists, Teachers, Plumbers and Builders. Our budding entrepreneurs gained an aspirational insight into industry and knowledge of how companies work, with some being offered part time jobs and even apprenticeships.

It is truly amazing how an opportunity like this gives young people the chance to excel in a way that they never have before. This increases self-esteem and subsequently has a great effect on their academic achievement. Since returning to school, the young people stand taller, smile greater and display a confidence in making their dream a reality. They realise their aspiration is only an opportunity away.

Work Experience is one of the life changing elements of our Careers Programme here at Bemrose and we are proud that we can offer this amazing opportunity. The programme enables our young people to develop their life skills from time management to using their initiative. Employability skills are essential in the development of young people throughout the world, supporting their life as a successful and happy human being.

Parents must wait outside the main double doors until staff send their child out for safeguarding reasons.

We understand that this will not always be a very quick process and Please ensure you call before 8:30am. requires patience but the safety of the children always comes first and we ask for parents and carers to be Congratulations patient and respectful of this.

As some of you may be aware, Mrs Atwal is having a baby and will be leaving us to start her maternity on Friday 24th May.

We wish her every happiness with her new arrival.

Uniform We have been informed that Multiprint, the company that we purchase our uniform from, are increasing their prices.

We are investigating other uniform suppliers to get comparative quotes and we will of course keep you updated if we change suppliers.

Primary Notices Homework Most parents know (but just in case your children haven’t told you!) homework is given out on a Wednesday. Children have until Monday to complete their homework and it is handed in on a Monday morning.

Doing homework, and reading at home, will really help your child with their learning in school.

Please help your child to: 1. Remember to take it home.

2. Do their homework 3. Hand it in on Monday morning.

Breakfast Club Breakfast club is free and open between 8:00am and 8:30am.

Breakfast club doors close at 8.30am prompt.

After 8:30am breakfast will not be served as the Primary school day starts at 8:40am.

Please remember you must enter the hall and sign your child in on their class register.

Aspirations Event A selection of our year 10 students attended the Aspirations event at the University of Cambridge, it was an ideal opportunity for them to understand the entry requirements, overcome the fears of living away from home and putting the myths of the ‘typical’ Cambridge student to rest. Our students soon realised that Russell Group universities are within their reach and could be considered when looking at University options. ‘Anything is possible if you work hard’.

The event included discussions of aiming high, an introduction to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities, activities related to Post 16 options, the chance to meet some of the current students and a tour of the College.

It was an Inspiring event for our students, who can now aim even higher!

Bemrose in South Africa It has been a busy half term of fundraising for the South Africa 2020 team again. We started it off with a staff walking marathon from Derby to Lichfield Cathedral, and a tiring student half marathon on the school fields.

As always we are so grateful to those that continue to sponsor us at events like these. We have a Fancy Dress 10,000 metre walk coming up in July that we would love to see everyone at so get your costumes ready.

There have been numerous cake, samosa and snack sales at break times, we have even debuted our sugar free cakes. Star baker Jamie O’Reilly, gave us this fabulous creation to sell for our ‘Great Bemrose Bake Off’ competition. Our resident cake taster Amanda Thornhill crowned it the winner, giving it a massive 11 out of 10.

It was that good!

We would like to say a massive thank you to Kane, Mr Millward, Mr Minto, Miss Kellogg, Mr Moore, Mr Thompson, Mr Dachtler, Mr Wilkinson and all of the students that played in the Basketball match we organised. To Mr Harrison for officiating the game, and also to all of the spectators that came to cheer everyone on.

It was safe to say that the staff resoundingly won the game with a score of 54 compared to the students 24. The staff team were dominant throughout, winning each of the quarters played. The students fought hard though, with plenty of opportunities to score but not quite the accuracy (or muscles) to convert the points.

Top scorer for the staff team was Mr Moore with 25 points (which he was keen to point out was more than the entire student team put together) and for the students it was Adam with 8 points.

Victory for the staff did come at a cost though! At the end there were definitely a few achy knees, blistered feet and swollen ankles.

I can’t wait to see how they all get on in dodgeball.

Phil has been busy making Fathers Day gifts for the staff to buy, and Leon has been slaving away in the kitchen with his mother cooking an authentic Chinese takeaway. Both are very grateful to the staff that have supported their efforts.

We have even managed to make it into the newspaper with a suitably embarrassing photo. Anything in the name of fundraising!

There is definitely a long way to go before we reach our target but with everyone’s support we will get there in the end.

Year 12 Visit Parliament

On Tuesday 30th April a group of year 12 students visited London to tour the Houses of Parliament. On arrival in London we spent time by the Tower of London before making our way to Sky Garden to take in the fantastic views and see the amazing indoor plants. From there we went straight to Westminster on a packed tube train where we were met by our tour guide in the Palace of Westminster. First we went into Westminster Hall, which is about 1,000 years old.

We then sat in the public viewing galleries of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons before returning to the Education Centre where we learned how Laws are made. We broke into two political parties (the red and the blue party) and debated the creation of a new law, with Mrs Goulding acting as the Speaker and Chairing the debate.

On leaving the Houses of Parliament we passed Downing Street and Trafalgar Square before enjoying time in Convent Garden. We returned back to Bemrose in the evening, tired after a long but very enjoyable day.

Year 8 Faith Trail On Thursday 9th May, a number of year 8 students took part in a ’Faith Trail’ around Derby.

The workshops in each place of worship were really good and the students asked lots of questions. They said all of the places were excellent, but of course the Gurdwara got a massive thumbs up for the food!

One of the workshop leaders commented on how quiet, well behaved and polite Bemrose students were. The students were respectful and polite in the places of worship and took great care to allow ordinary worshipers the space they needed. They did us proud. Well done.

Tomorrow’s Engineers On 11th and 12th April, all of year 8 took part in a Tomorrow’s Engineers project. This involved an interactive assembly highlighting all the different types of engineering that are available for people to go into and workshops covering inventing, designing and driving robots and interactive quizzes. All the pupils enjoyed the sessions and were well behaved.

Alter Rock Event On 5th April we held a family event at the Alter Rock Climbing Centre in Derby. The event was held for the families of students who have been working towards their NICAS qualifications at the Essential Life Skills Project.

You have shown great commitment and effort- well done and keep going!

Thank you all to the fabulous Mum’s, Dad’s and extended family members that came along to join us. It was a joyous occasion. We are aiming to hold a future event in July - we will keep you posted.

Students who wish to join the project need to speak with Mrs Watson and collect a consent form.

Primary Rewards Day The Cartoonist Martin Olson visited the Primary Phase on Friday 3rd May as part of the Kedleston House rewards day.

He went through step by step instructions on how to draw cartoon faces.

The children thoroughly enjoyed their sessions.

If the reasons given for your child’s irregular school attendance are not satisfactory, then the Education Welfare Service may take legal proceedings against you for failure to comply with the Law. This may result in:  A Fixed Penalty Notice payable up to £120 fine  Prosecution under s444 (I) Education Act 1996, where, if convicted, you may be

fined up to £1000 

The Law also says that “Lateness constitutes absences!” It is held that persistent lateness is not “full time” education. (Hinchley v. Rankin 1961).

Under 14 Football On Saturday 13th April, Mr Khan and Mrs Watson took 9 students to the DWP power league to play a tournament against Liverpool under 14s.

Unfortunately, on this occasion we lost our matches but our students did their absolute best and again made Bemrose proud.

They then went across to Pride Park Stadium to watch Derby beat Bolton 4 goals to 0. Harris and Anas had never been to a live game before so it was great experience for them. What a fantastic day out for our students!

Congratulations to the team for trying so hard and for showing the upmost respect to the Liverpool team and their coaches.
