The growth of non-alcoholic drinks has been quite steady, with a trend of even more sales likely in the future. Consumers today are increasingly concerned with health and convenience. Distribution channels are available everywhere. There is considerable advertising and promotion of these products and consumers benefit from it.

There are different categories of non-alcoholic drinks, and these can be categorized accordingly to the preference of consumers and product attributes as follows: • Carbonated or soft drinks: drinks which have carbon dioxide dissolved in the formulae, and are promoted as refreshing; a recent concern is to lower the sugar content by substituting with sweeteners.

• Fruit and vegetable juices: natural products that contain few or no additives; vegetable juices may be mixed with fruit juices to make the vegetable juice taste better. Some juices also provide health benefits.

• Drinking water and mineral water: plain water or natural mineral water according to national standards for quality and safety, and caring for environment.

• Herbal and functional drinks: any drink that substantiates its health benefits or traditional remedy drinks.

• Tea and coffee: popular and convenient with added benefit of certain therapeutic compounds in the products.

Each of the above drink categories has increased sales volume each year, which may be due to the increase in population, the promotion of tourism, the new lifestyle and a requirement for convenience.

Food and drink industries of all sizes need to put effort into implementing quality and safety measures for the whole food chain; and in compliance with standards and specifications of their products. At the same time there is also a need to understand and address environment issues and labor rights. Training in and learning more about advanced knowledge are important for all levels of staff working in the food industry.

From the increasingly favorable business trend of non-alcoholic drinks in the world and in Thailand, there is great potential for drink industries to grow larger. However, because of competition, food companies need to seriously consider innovation for the development of new products with a better knowledge of the scientific and technological characteristic of the products for health benefits to be able to stay profitable and remain at the top of the business chart.

กฎระเบียบด้านอาหารล่าสุดที่มีผลบังคับใช้ ประกาศกระทรวงสาธารณสุขว่าด้วยเรื่อง

การแสดงข้อความ “พรีเมียม” บนฉลากอาหาร กระทรวงสาธารณสุข กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ และกระทรวง พาณิชย์ ได้มีนโยบายเชิงบูรณาการระหว่างหน่วยงานและภาคส่วนที่ เกี่ยวข้อง เมื่อวันที่ 11 มกราคม พ.ศ.2556 โดยให้มีการผลักดันและ ส่งเสริมศักยภาพการผลิตอาหารให้มีคุณภาพและความปลอดภัย ครอบคลุมตลอดทั้งห่วงโซ่ พัฒนาศักยภาพของผู้ผลิต และยกระดับ สินค้าให้สอดคล้องหรือเทียบเท่ามาตรฐานสากลเพื่อเพิ่มมูลค่าทาง เศรษฐกิจ รวมถึงส่งเสริมการส่งออกสินค้า โดยทุกภาคส่วนต้องมี ส่ ว นร่ ว มในการผลั ก ดั น อย่ า งจริ ง จั ง ในการนี้ ส ำนั ก งานคณะ กรรมการอาหารและยาจึงได้กำหนดหลักเกณฑ์เกี่ยวกับการแสดง ข้อความ “พรีเมียม” บนฉลากของผลิตภัณฑ์อาหาร เพื่อเป็นทาง เลือกแก่ผู้บริโภค ซึ่งผลิตภัณฑ์อาหาร “พรีเมียม” ต้องมีคุณภาพ หรือมาตรฐานของผลิตภัณฑ์ที่สูงกว่าหรือมีลักษณะเด่นเป็นพิเศษ กว่ า ผลิ ต ภั ณ ฑ์ ทั่ ว ไป และต้ อ งอาศั ย ระบบการตรวจสอบรั บ รองที่ สามารถสืบย้อนกลับได้

The Ministry of Public Health, the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, and the Ministry of Commerce have initiated an integrated policy among agencies and relevant sectors on 11 th January B.E.2556 (2013). This policy encourages and promotes extensive quality and safety throughout the food chain, as well as develops manufacturers’ potential, and supports upgrading products to comply with or be equivalent to international standards.

All of these aim to maximize economic value and promote exports of the products. All relevant parties must actively involved this effort. In this regard, the Food and Drug Administration has established regulations for displaying the term “Premium” on the labels of food products as an alternative for consumers. A “Premium” food product must have higher quality or standards than general counterpart products, or have other special features; and the use of “Premium” requires a certification system which builds in traceability.

2556 เรื่ อ ง การแสดงข้ อ ความ “พรี เ มี ย ม” บนฉลากอาหาร ลงวั น ที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2556 และประกาศกระทรวงสาธารณสุข (ฉบับที่ 366) พ.ศ. 2556 เรื่อง การแสดงข้อความ “พรีเมียม” บนฉลากน้ำนมโคสด และ น้ำนมโคชนิดเต็มมันเนยที่ผ่านกรรมวิธีพาสเจอร์ไรส์ ลงวันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. 2556 ซึ่งประกาศฉบับหลังนั้นมีความสำคัญและเกี่ยวเนื่องโดยตรงกับ กลุ่มอุตสาหกรรมนม จึงขอนำเสนอสาระสำคัญดังด้านล่างนี้

he Food and Drug Administration has issued the Notification of the Ministry of Public Health (No. 365) B.E.2556 (2013) Re: Displaying of the term “Premium” on Food Labels dated 1st November B.E. 2556 (2013) and the Notification of the Ministry of Public Health (No. 366) B.E. 2556 (2013) Re: Displaying of the term “Premium” on Labels of Pasteurized Cows’ Milk and Pasteurized Full Fat Cows’ Milkdated 1st November B.E. 2556 (2013). The followings is the substantive amendment of the Notification of the Ministry of Public Health (No. 366) which directly concerns to the dairy industry.

The Notification of the Ministry of Public Health (No. 366) B.E. 2556 (2013) Re: Displaying of the term “Premium” on Labels of Pasteurized Cows’ Milk and Pasteurized Full Fat Cows’ Milk

เป็นการกำหนดเงื่อนไขการแสดงข้อความดังกล่าวไว้เป็นการเฉพาะ ผลิตภัณฑ์น้ำนมโคเต็มมันเนยที่ผ่านกรรมวิธีพาสเจอร์ไรส์ โดยเพิ่มเติม ข้อกำหนดของสถานที่รวบรวมน้ำนมโคดิบหลักเกณฑ์ว่าด้วยสุขลักษณะที่ดี (Recommended Code of Practice General Principles of Food Hygiene) หรือมาตรฐานอื่นๆ ที่ไม่ต่ำกว่านี้ และกำหนดคุณภาพมาตรฐาน ของน้ำนมโคไว้ ดังนี้ 1. ต้องผลิตจากน้ำนมโคดิบที่มีจำนวนจุลินทรีย์ทั้งหมด (Standard Plate Count) ไม่เกิน 200,000 cfu/ml และเซลล์เม็ดเลือดขาว (Somatic Cell Count) ไม่เกิน 300,000 cell/ml 2. โปรตีนนม (Milk Protein) ไม่น้อยกว่าร้อยละ 3.1 โดยน้ำหนัก 3. มันเนย (Fat) ไม่น้อยกว่าร้อยละ 4.0 โดยน้ำหนัก 4. เนื้อนมไม่รวมมันเนย (Solid Non Fat) ไม่น้อยกว่าร้อยละ 8.5 โดย น้ำหนัก 5. ตรวจพบจุลินทรีย์ทั้งหมด ได้ไม่เกิน 1,000 cfu/ml ณ แหล่งผลิตและ ไม่เกิน 10,000 cfu/ml ตลอดระยะเวลาที่จำหน่ายจนถึงวันหมดอายุการ บริโภค

Designates the condition of displaying of the term “Premium” on labels of Pasteurized cows’ milk and Pasteurized full fat cows’ milk, including the Recommended Code of Practice General Principles of Food Hygiene as minimum requirement or other higher standards.

Pasteurized cows’ milk and Pasteurized full fat cows’ milk shall have standards and quality superior to ordinary milk as follows: 1. Produced from raw milk which Standard Plate Count not more than 200,000 cfu/ml and Somatic Cell Count not more than 300,000 cell/ml; 2. Milk protein not less than 3.1% by weight; 3. Butter fat not less than 4.0% by weight; 4. Solid Non fat not less than 8.5% by weight; 5. Total Plate Count in Pasteurized cows’ milk and Pasteurized full fat cows’ milk at production establishment not more than 1,000 cfu/ml and not more than 10,000 cfu/ml all

สมาคมอุตสาหกรรมเครื่องดื่มไทยได้เปิดเผยผลการศึกษาขององค์การ ความปลอดภัยของอาหารแห่งสหภาพยุโรป (The European Food Safety Authority; EFSA) เกี่ ย วกั บ แอสพาร์ แ ทม ซึ่ ง เป็ น สารให้ ค วามหวานแทน น้ ำ ตาลชนิ ด หนึ่ ง ที่ ใ ช้ กั น อย่ า งแพร่ ห ลายในผลิ ต ภั ณ ฑ์ เ ครื่ อ งดื่ ม ชนิ ด ไม่ มี พลังงานว่ามีความปลอดภัยต่อการบริโภคและไม่ส่งผลกระทบต่อสุขภาพ แต่อย่างใด ทั้งนี้ ผลการศึกษานี้สอดคล้องกับความเห็นของนักวิทยาศาสตร์ และผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านสุขภาพทั่วโลกที่มีมาอย่างยาวนาน และเป็นเครื่องยืนยัน ถึงความปลอดภัยของแอสพาร์แทมได้เป็นอย่างดี

The Thai Beverage Industry Association (TBA) today welcomes the EFSA opinion, published in early December 2013, which reconfirms that aspartame is safe. EFSA’s scientific experts have thoroughly investigated and reviewed all available data on aspartame, a sweetener commonly used in zero-calorie beverages and has concluded that aspartame poses no safety concern for consumers. The results of this study are aligned with the opinions of numerous scientists and healthcare professionals worldwide and, in effect, guarantee aspartame’s safety.

he study was led by Dr. Alicja Mortensen, chair of EFSA’s Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources Added to Foods (ANS), and thoroughly examined the consumption of aspartame by both laboratory animals and humans. The most indepth and comprehensive risk assessments of aspartame to date, the study is expected to boost consumer confidence in aspartamesweetened beverages.

Mr. Veera Akraputtiporn, Vice Chairman of TBA said “Scientists worldwide have studied the safety of aspartame for more than three decades. In Thailand, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized aspartame as a sweetener for beverages for more than seven years. Aspartame is added to beverages along with other types of sweeteners to reduce calorie intake and offer more choices for those controlling their weight. This includes diabetic patients who need to strictly control sugar consumption.”

In addition to EFSA research, the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and regulatory agencies from more than 100 countries, including Thailand, have reviewed aspartame and confirm its safety.

พฤติกรรมและทัศนคติผู้บริโภคต่อเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวด ต่อเนื่องจากบทความ “Bottled Drinks Market in Thailand: ตลาดเครื่ อ งดื่ ม บรรจุ ข วดในประเทศไทย” ที่ ตี พิ ม พ์ ใ นนิ ต ยสาร Drinking Supplement: Bevtec Asia 2015 Edition ฉบับที่ 33 เดือนมกราคม 2558 นั้น จะเห็นได้ว่าการเติบโตของมูลค่าตลาด เครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวดในประเทศไทยมีความท้าทายสำหรับผู้ประกอบการ เนื่องด้วยมูลค่าตลาดที่สูงถึง 19,900 ล้านบาท ในปี 2556 และ คาดว่าปี 2557 จะขยายตัวอีกร้อยละ 7.5 เนื่องจากการแข่งขัน ในกลุ่ ม เครื่ อ งดื่ ม ฟั ง ก์ ชั น นอล ซึ่ ง เป็ น ตลาดใหญ่ ยั ง คงเป็ น ตั ว ขับเคลื่อนตลาดเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวดที่สำคัญ และยังมีปัจจัยเสริม จากสภาพอากาศที่ ร้ อ นจั ด และการแข่ ง ขั น ที่ เ พิ่ ม ขึ้ น จากจำนวน ผู้เล่นรายใหม่ที่เข้าสู่ตลาด รวมถึงการจัดรายการโปรโมชันเพื่อ กระตุ้นตลาดจึงยิ่งส่งผลให้ตลาดเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวดยังคงเติบโต อยู่อย่างต่อเนื่อง As the previous article “Bottled Drinks Market in Thailand” which was published in Drinking Supplement magazine: Bevtec Asia 2015 Edition, issue 33 on January 2015 stated that the bottled drinks market value in Thailand has challenged for any entrepreneurs. The market value was 19,900 million baht in 2013, and it was expected to expand for 7.5 percent in 2014. The functional drinks competition which was the significant market drove bottled drinks market. The other factors were hot weather, higher competition according to the new competitors, and any promotions; they grew bottled drinks market.

จากการสำรวจพฤติ ก รรมการบริ โ ภคเครื่ อ งดื่ ม บรรจุ ข วดของผู้ บ ริ โ ภค ในเขตกรุงเทพฯ และปริมณฑล ด้วยแบบสอบถามทั้งหมด 100 ชุด ในช่วง เดื อ นสิ ง หาคม 2557 โดยมี วั ต ถุ ป ระสงค์ เ พื่ อ ศึ ก ษาพฤติ ก รรมการซื้ อ ทั ศ นคติ และแรงจู ง ใจในการเลื อ กซื้ อ ผลิ ต ภั ณ ฑ์ ข องผู้ บ ริ โ ภค รวมทั้ ง ข้ อ เสนอแนะในมุ ม มองของผู้ บ ริ โ ภคต่ อ ผลิ ต ภั ณ ฑ์ เ ครื่ อ งดื่ ม บรรจุ ข วด พบว่ากลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนใหญ่ร้อยละ 60 เป็นผู้หญิง นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าร้อยละ 35 และร้อยละ 28 ของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถาม ทั้ ง หมดอยู่ ใ นช่ ว งอายุ ร ะหว่ า ง 33-47 ปี และอายุ ร ะหว่ า ง 18-25 ปี ตามลำดับ อีกทั้งร้อยละ 43 ของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามทั้งหมดมีรายได้เฉลี่ย 20,001-30,000 บาทต่อเดือน

Bottled Drinks Consumer Behaviors

From the survey on bottled drinks consumer behavior around Bangkok and vicinity with 100 questionnaires in August 2014, its purposes were study on behavior, attitude, and motivation of consumers buying products, and also suggestions from consumers on bottled drinks. The research found that 60% of the sample group was women. The 35% and 28% were 33-47 and 18-25 years old respectively. The 43% participants got salary for 20,001-30,000 baht.

นอกจากนี้ ผลสำรวจเมื่อสอบถามพฤติกรรมการซื้อเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวด จากผู้ ต อบแบบสอบถาม โดยพิ จ ารณาประเด็ น ด้ า นความถี่ ใ นการซื้ อ ปริ ม าณการซื้ อ ค่ า ใช้ จ่ า ยในการซื้ อ และประเภทเครื่ อ งดื่ ม บรรจุ ข วด ที่เลือกซื้อ โดยภาพรวมพบว่าผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามส่วนใหญ่ซื้อเครื่องดื่ม บรรจุ ข วดมากกว่ า 8 ครั้ ง /เดื อ น คิ ด เป็ น ร้ อ ยละ 28 ของผู้ ต อบ แบบสอบถามทั้งหมด ปริมาณการซื้อในแต่ละครั้งส่วนใหญ่ร้อยละ 55 จะ ซื้อเฉลี่ย 1 ขวด/ครั้ง และร้อยละ 23 ของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามจะซื้อเฉลี่ย 2 ขวดต่อครั้ง โดยส่วนใหญ่ร้อยละ 72 มีค่าใช้จ่ายในการซื้อเฉลี่ยไม่เกิน 40 บาท/ครั้ง และร้อยละ 14 ของผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามจะมีค่าใช้จ่ายในการซื้อ เฉลี่ย 41-80 บาท/ครั้ง และประเภทของเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวด 5 อันดับแรก

When we did bottled drinks research on buying frequency, quantity, expense, and types of drinks; the overall result was they bought bottled drinks more than 8 times a month which was 28% of all participants.

Their average buy were 1 bottle in a time for 55%, and 23% for 2 bottles in a time. Most of them; 72%, average spent 40 baht a time, and 14% spent 41-80 baht. The first five of bottled drinks were drinking water, fruit and vegetable juice, soft drinks, mineral water, and energetic drinks. The details are shown in figure 2-5 Moreover, when we asked the samples about ingredients and appearances of packageing, the first five were vitamin C, vegetable and fruit juices, pulp, collagen, vitamin A, and other ingredients as shown in figure 6. ทัศนคติของผู้บริโภคต่อผลิตภัณฑ์เครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวด

เมื่ อ พิ จ ารณาทั ศ นคติ ด้ า นส่ ว นประสมทางการตลาดจากผู้ ต อบ แบบสอบถามที่มีต่อเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวดในแต่ละด้าน ได้แก่ ทัศนคติด้าน ผลิตภัณฑ์ ราคา ช่องทางการจำหน่าย การส่งเสริมการขาย และบรรจุภัณฑ์ พบว่าในภาพรวมผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามมีทัศนคติหรือแนวโน้มความพึงพอใจ ต่ อ เครื่ อ งดื่ ม บรรจุ ข วดในระดั บ ที่ “ดี ม าก” ของทุ ก ส่ ว นประสมทาง การตลาด ถ้าหากจำแนกทัศคติของผู้บริโภคต่อเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวดในแต่ละด้าน จะพบว่าผู้ตอบแบบสอบถามจะมีทัศนคติที่ดีที่สุดต่อเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวด ในด้ า นช่ อ งทางการจั ด จำหน่ า ย เนื่ อ งจากผู้ บ ริ โ ภคเห็ น ว่ า ในปั จ จุ บั น การเลือกซื้อเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวดมีความสะดวกสบาย เข้าถึงได้ง่าย และ การจั ด วางของในร้ า นสะดวกซื้ อ สามารถมองหาได้ ง่ า ย แยกประเภท เครื่องดื่มไว้อย่างชัดเจน ด้านบรรจุภัณฑ์ของเครื่องดื่มบรรจุขวด พบว่าผู้บริโภคมีทัศนคติอยู่ใน ระดับดีมากเช่นกัน โดยเห็นว่าผลิตภัณฑ์มีการระบุข้อมูลส่วนผสมของ เครื่องดื่มและโภชนาการบนบรรจุภัณฑ์อย่างชัดเจน ในขณะเดียวกันวัสดุ

clear plastic for 41 percent, thin-clear plastic for 32 percent, and glass for 22% as shown in the figure7.

Customers’ Attitudes on Bottled Drinks

When we consider on marketing mix from participants on bottled drinks in many aspects; attitudes on product, price, distribution, promotion, and packaging, found that the overall attitude of participants was “very good” from all marketing mix.

If we distinguished consumer’s attitude in the aspects, the result was the participants had the best attitude on distribution. They considered the convenient and product placing in the convenient stores and separated well each type of the bottled drinks.

About the packaging, the consumers had the best attitude on it, too. The material of products had to be light, strong, and easy to carry.

If the packaging was clear would be attractive for consumers.

About the promotion or campaign, the consumers had the best about them also. They got information on how good products were. The important thing was, the consumers had a good attitude on discount, free, and on sale bottled drinks; they were significant strategies for marketing simulation. Moreover, the good attitude from presenters’ or models’ bottled drinks at the selling point influenced buying decision on bottled drinks.

The participants had good attitude on products especially if the products and taste were easily to drunk. The products should have standard production and refresh drinkers. The fewer attitudes of consumers were nutrients from bottle drinks especially for female consumers who needed skin enhance products. Therefore, entrepreneurs should aware this kind of product development for marketing strategies. First, the strategies have to be relevant to customers’ needs on useful drinks, refreshing, and promote its usefulness for customers’ trustworthiness.

About the price, the participants had good attitude for the bottled drinks’ prices. They thought the prices were related to their usefulness, not too expensive.

Customers’ Motivation on Bottled Drinks

The motivation which drove customers’ decision to buy the bottled drinks. When we considered on rational buying motives, they were product’s value, trustworthiness, price, taste, and convenience on packaging and buying, etc. The emotional buying motives were, needed to do as same as celebrities, singers, or stars who promote that products did, and customers needed to be in-trend. From the questionnaires, the most second motivations to buy the bottled drinks were “that product had to be certified from FDA” and “they needed to be refreshed from thirsty”. Both of them were the most effective motivations on customers. The rests were clear label, convenient packaging for drinking, environmental friendly, famous producers and distributor, reliable, and natural ingredients. The least motivations were nutrients for skin and body-shape enhance.

The most emotional attitude for bottled drinks buying decision was “advertisement on any media” which was effective for motivation.

The rests were wanted to in-trend of drinking bottled drinks. The promotion motivation was one of motivations for customers as shown in table 1.

Finally, from the research on customers’ behavior on bottled drinks from the sample group could be stated that there were many interesting points which could be adapted to marketing strategies in products, prices, distributions, and promotions. The conclusion could be; 1) Product development As the research shown that the expected bottled drinks for customers were “refreshing” “good taste for drinking easily” “convenient packaging for drinking” and “the quantity balances for a drink”. The product could be ‘refreshing’ and ‘nutrient or useful ingredients’. Therefore, the new players in bottled drinks market needed to realize on refreshing first to make impression on customers. The taste needed to be easily to drink,

About the packaging, the information that was expected to be seen from customers were ingredients and clearly for reading enough.

2) Price Most of the customers were pleasant to pay the reasonable price for reasonable quality. When we considered on the motivations, price was not significant factor on buying bottled drinks. The participants considered on its value instead.

3) Distribution The most comfortable and effective distribution for customers were ‘convenient store’. The rests were supermarket and hypermarket. The new product should have ‘buying assistant’ at the buying area for promote the product.

That was the strategies which could not be overlooked because it was two-way communication. The customers could get more information on the product and decided to buy easier.

4) Promotion or campaign From the research, the significant motivations apart from the product’s function or benefit, customers also focused on emotion.

Advertisement was an important activity for buying decision. It gave more information on product to customers. The best effective advertisement was an online media which connected directly to new generation, because their daily lives more stuck with social media. Before buying any products, they needed to surf from the internet first, and online media was low-cost media.

The entrepreneurs should emphasize on online media and other media also.

The messages should be refreshing, fun, happy, and good-looking because the new generation emphasized on to be accepted from the society on appearance. The products should increase their good image on society, friend, and working. Moreover, the campaign events by discount, on sale, or get free were still effective motivation for buying. Therefore, the campaign strategies should not be overlooked.

According to a report in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, a compound from hops could protect brain cells from damage -- and potentially slow the development of disorders such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Jianguo Fang and colleagues note that mounting evidence suggests that oxidative damage to neuronal cells contributes to the development of diseases that originate in the brain.

If scientists could find a way to guard these cells from this type of damage, they might be able to help prevent or slow down Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions. One compound found in hops, called xanthohumol, has gotten the attention of researchers for its potential benefits, including antioxidation, cardiovascular protection and anticancer properties.

Fang’s team decided to test xanthohumol’s effects on brain cells. In lab tests, the researchers found that the compound could protect neuronal cells and potentially help slow the development of brain disorders. The scientists conclude xanthohumol could be a good candidate for fighting such conditions.

Bacteria that have evolved to eat their way through yeast in the human gut could inform the development of new treatments for people suffering from bowel diseases.

Led by Newcastle University, UK, and the University of Michigan, the study shows how microbes in our digestive tract have learned to unravel the difficult to break down complex carbohydrates that make up the yeast cell wall.

Evolving over the 7,000 years humans have consumed fermented food and drink, the ability of strains of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (Bt) to degrade yeasts is almost exclusively found in the human gut.

Publishing their findings today in Nature, the international research team1 say the discovery of this process could accelerate the development of prebiotic medicines to help people suffering from bowel problems and autoimmune diseases.

The study, led by Professor Harry Gilbert at Newcastle University, Professor Eric Martens, of the University of Michigan, and Dr Wade Abbott of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, has identified the complex machinery that targets yeast carbohydrates. This has provided a better understanding of how our unique intestinal soup of bacteria - termed the microbiome - has the capacity to obtain nutrients from our highly varied diet.

The research involving scientists from Newcastle, Australia, Canada, USA and Belgium has unraveled the mechanism by which Bt, a dominant member of the human microbiome, has learned to feast upon difficult to breakdown complex carbohydrates called yeast mannans.

Mannans, derived from the yeast cell wall, are a component in our diet from fermented foods including bread, beer, wine and soy sauce.

It is hoped the research could aid a better understanding of how to provide nutrients to specific organisms in the microbiome -the collective genomes of the microorganisms that reside in an environmental niche.

Indeed, given that Bt has been granted Orphan Designation by the FDA for Paediatric Crohn’s Disease, yeast mannan may have health promoting effects on the microbiome by stimulating the growth of Bt.

he highest number of overseas visitor registrations for the exhibition come from Malaysia, followed by the Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam and Japan.
