Client Testimonials I reached out to you during the most stressful time of life for both my loved ones and myself - horror had occurred to my dear loving mother. My mom had fractured her hip and due to her frail health and advanced age required risky hip replacement surgery. Many issues legal and otherwise arose which I could not personally resolve. You not only resolved each and every one, but you continue to do so now, over 4 years later. You always display extreme sincerity, compassion and friendship, using your vast experience and confidence in your ability, to continually bring satisfaction, positive results and a tremendous sense of relief and comfort to my loved ones and myself. You have gone out of your way to visit Mom on multiple occasions in her Nursing house and we love you for it. As an attorney, friend, and a great man, I could not possibly hope to know anyone more phenomenal. The three greatest men I have ever known are my dear departed father, my dear departed father-in-law and Ely Rosenzveig. – Jeff D. I hired Ely to assist with my parents estate planning and it was a wise decision. He is a true expert in navigating through complex elder care law and procedures. His guidance was invaluable and his communication excellent. I would strongly recommend his services.

Fathers are the biggest source of strength for many of us. Remember when you were a kid? The innocent eyes of a child perceive father as the all-powerful, most knowledge, truly affectionate and the most important person in the family. For daughters, fathers are the first men they adore and fall in love with. While for sons, their fathers are the strongest person they know and someone they aspire to emulate. Even for adult fathers, their dads are someone who they look up to for the most experienced and honest advice that is always in the best of their interest. For this great figure in our life that we know as father, we wish him a Happy Father’s Day! Boomers & Beyond would also like to wish all of the grandfathers out there a Happy Father’s Day! We all appreciate you. Thank you for your wisdom. Thank you for your love and faith. Your wife, children and grandchildren appreciate it. You may have silver in his hair, but he has gold in his heart. We wish you all a wonderful Father’s Day with the special and important men in your life. Jim Stankiewicz, General Manager

The 5 Best Dogs for Your Golden Years Coton de Tulear. The Maltese and its related breeds (as well as crossbreeds with these breeds in them) are incredibly attentive and tuned in to their owners. As one of the smallest breeds on this list, Maltese are also the most portable — and fragile. Pembroke Welsh Corgi If you’re on the more active side, and comfortable with a dog who’s smart, determined and strong-willed, a Pembroke Welsh Corgi might be a good fit. Long known as the dog favored by England’s Queen Elizabeth (who also fancies her Dorgis, a double dose of short-leggedness

French Bulldog A healthy French Bulldog is a solid companion, especially if he can be with you all the time. While not exactly known for their athleticism (they tend to overheat easily), if kept fit and trim, the Frenchie is a wonderful walking partner. Sharing the bed may take a little getting used to, though, since these dogs tend to snore. But in the eyes (and ears) of those who love them, that just makes the Frenchie more endearing. Poodle There’s a reason why Poodles have remained popular decade after decade, especially with older people. They’re personable, easy to train and have a lively sense of humor (they laugh with you, not at you). They are also relatively clean, low-shedding dogs who are easy to maintain as long as you keep regular grooming appointments (or learn to maintain a short “puppy clip” yourself). The Poodle is part of the original popular crossbreed, the Cockapoo, and the “poo” influence is seen in the names of many others, including the Labradoodle, the dog that kicked off the modern cross-breed craze. The Toy Poodle is very popular with people who want a fun tiny dog, but the miniature may be a better pick if you need a dog who’s a little sturdier and

more capable of a good long walk. Trick training is usually a breeze with these dogs, and once trained, Poodles seem to live to keep you laughing. Schipperke One of the more long-lived dogs, the Schipperke is a sturdy little breed with an easy-care coat and shoe-button eyes that are always asking, “What next?” If you live with a Skip, the answer could be, “Anything.” Take up kayaking, or buy a sailboat — heck, move onto a sailboat and head for an around-the-world adventure. Equipped with a life-preserver in case he goes overboard, your Skip will love you, because after all, this breed was developed for onboard living, as a ship’s ratter from Belgium. Maltese If you want a dog who sheds the least, get a small, long-haired dog and keep your pet clipped short. The Maltese fits the bill here perfectly. Although the Maltese in the show ring is a perfectly groomed, shimmery wave of floor-length white fur, the same fur goes easy-care when the dog is kept clipped short. That’s not the only benefit of the breed, by far. Maltese are in the same general family as many dogs developed solely as companions and lapdogs, such as the Bichon Frise, Havanese, Bolognese and

that’s the offspring of a Corgi and a Dachshund), the Corgi’s strong will is kept somewhat in check by the limitations of those little legs. They don’t seem to be aware of the problem, though, which means you have to do your best to keep your Corgi from injuring that long back. That means stairs for the bed or couch, and ramps for the car. And yes, lifting: Although the Corgi is a relative small dog, he’s no lightweight, especially if you don’t watch his diet. But a better companion for an active life is hard to find, which is why Corgis are the darlings of the equine set, along with the hard-charging Jack Russell.

My Fabulous Grandmother, diagnosed with Alzheimers/Dementia in 1992 was previously known as “the other Mae West” by her friends and colleagues. Very comfortable with her healthy portions, she dubbed herself the F.A.T lady, using the acronym to stand for Fabulous, Attractive and Tenacious. Those who knew her in the early days would agree. A lover of all genres of music, opera was amongst her favorite and we would often frequent the theater well-coiffed from head to toe. During the time of her diagnosis she was less than pleased that strangers had to come into her home to assist her. We were so very fortunate that those strangers soon became a part of our family. Qualified Caregivers, Aides and Companions are easily found within an agency. Many of them go above and beyond the call of duty and give that extra personal touch to your loved one, but it is often unnoticed. Our Aide Mary was always going above and beyond. If grandmother had a birthday,

she would go out of her way to make it an extra special day by turning a normal bath into a bubble bath, preparing her favorite corn beef sandwich and adding a birthday candle right in the middle of it. I know that my grandmother was so very grateful because of the big smile on her face at the end of the day. That smile made us so very grateful to Mary. At her Home going, Mary was right there with our family and she stated that it was a pleasure to work with such a wonderful F.A.T lady. That made us smile. Today, on behalf of our grandmother, we sing the praises of Caregivers, and all those who so selflessly share their compassion and go above and beyond the call of care for others in their home. Mary, we will forever be grateful for the exemplary care given our grandmother Thelma who was F.A.T (Fabulous, Attractive and Tenacious). If you are looking for exceptional “Nanny Type” care in your home from a nurturing qualified Companion or Homemaker, give us a call today and soon you may be singing the song of praise that we so happily sing today.

The Big Three: Important Health Issues For Senior Men Every June, Men’s Health Month is celebrated across the country as a way to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men. Taking ownership of one’s health care is important for all men, especially seniors. In honor of Men’s Health Month, Boomers & Beyond is highlighting three health issues older men frequently face – and what they can to do prevent them. With Father’s Day around the corner, a wonderful gift can be checking in with your father or grandfather to ensure they are seeing a doctor regularly in order to prevent future health problems. Heart Disease The age onset for cardiovascular disease typically occurs earlier in life for men, between age 50 and 60, than for women, who are more likely to experience cardiovascular issues such as stroke, heart attack and heart disease in their 70s and 80s. Men (and women) should make the effort to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly, as well as monitor blood pressure and cholesterol. Older men should feel comfortable strategizing with their doctors if they need to lose weight or need guidance on how to begin a safe exercise program. Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men other than skin cancer. Approximately 200,000 men will develop prostate cancer in the United States this year. Although there is screening available to detect this disease, it is not that sensitive in discovering the disease. It is very important for older men to have regular appointments with their health care providers to discuss their risks of developing prostate cancer (and others types) along with how and when to be screened for the disease. Diabetes Diabetes continues to be on the rise in seniors and research points to this rise being even higher in men. A chronic disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, diabetes can be managed in older adults with proper diet, medication, and monitoring of glucose levels. Older men should not brush off symptoms such as frequent thirst, frequent huger, fatigue and increased urination. These can be signs of diabetes and should be discussed with a health care provider, along with any other concerns.

• Give a gift that ties in with Dad's hobbies. If he likes fishing, don't just surprise him with a new rod or lure. Give him the gift but tell him that you have made plans to spend a day or a weekend fishing with him. He will appreciate your wanting to spend time with him just as much as the gift.

• In a situation where you are shopping for someone who is still living in his own home but could use some help with household chores, arrange for a house cleaning service to come in on a regular basis, or for someone to mow the lawn. In colder climates, you may want to consider paying for someone to shovel the driveway and walkway at the house during the winter.

• Also think about gadgets that will help make everyday living easier when you are looking for Father's Day gifts for seniors. Consider items like lighted magnifiers for people who have trouble making out the fine print on labels, or large-face watches or clocks.

6 Father’s Day gift ideas for seniors

• If you want to send something that is good to eat as a gift, consider a gift basket of fruit, chocolate, jams or preserves. This is an good option if the recipient doesn't live nearby. You can place your order online or by phone and have it delivered on the day you choose. In a situation where you are shopping for someone who lives nearby, pick up a basket from a retailer or surprise him with one you put together.

• If he likes to read, pick up the latest bestseller in the genre that he likes. You can also order a gift subscription to his favorite magazine or arrange to pick up the tab for home delivery of the daily newspaper. • Clothing is another good choice when you are looking for Father's Day gifts. If you aren't sure about the size or color, you have a couple of options. Some stores will print off a gift receipt that allows the recipient to return or exchange the item within in a certain time. You also have the option of giving a gift card and letting Dad choose his gift.

ATTORNEYS AT LAW Many Years of Experience Protecting the Legal Interests of the Elderly & Special Needs Populations

Why should I spend money hiring attorneys to do asset protection planning for me and my loved ones? Currently, the monthly cost for nursing home care in New York ranges between $10,000-$15,000, and properly certified home health attendants (nurse aides) can cost as much or more for round- the-clock home care. Statistically, it is likely that most people will need either or both of these care options as they grow older. It is critical that you plan appropriately to best minimize the strain that elder care costs may have on your estate, and to help put you in the best position possible to qualify for benefits that are largely covered by the government, under Medicare or Medicaid. Our firm has attorneys with extensive experience in developing tax-effective action plans for our clients that help protect their assets from government imposition. We have also been very successful in negotiating the complex bureaucratic minefield in which Medicaid is now mired. We have achieved remarkable results for our clients on a host of Medicaid related issues, from obtaining Medicaid approvals for coverage of home care and institutional care benefits, to very accommodative resolutions of Medicaid spousal recovery claims, where the office of Medicaid aggressively pursues the non-institutionalized (i.e., or “community”) spouse for Medicaid benefits provided.

Why should I have a lawyer prepare my will? If you die without a Will, the law, not you, determines how your assets are divided and to whom they are given. A poorly drafted Will may result in a sizeable chunk of your assets not ending up where you want them to go. We are an experienced law firm that can expertly craft your will to address your long-term care, tax, estate planning, and asset protection planning issues. It is in your best interest that planning be done properly so as to minimize the tax burden on your estate. Our experience and skill in the fields of Trusts, Wills, and Estates enables our firm to uniquely tailor estate planning to your individual needs. We will review your entire estate and draft a personalized plan that will best direct the disposition of your assets after death, whether through your Will, or by means of testamentary substitutes (trusts, joint-asset ownership with right of survivorship, or by beneficiary designation in life insurance policies, annuities, or individual retirement accounts).

My father is having difficulty caring for himself. I am afraid he will no longer be able to live on his own. I am worried about finding the money to pay for his care, whether he stays at home or moves to an assisted living facility or nursing home. What do I do?

Do your senior dad (and granddad) proud with a great gift on Father’s Day Father’s Day provides a chance for every one of us to shower unconditional love on them. As your dad has done so much for you, make sure you will give him a unique and unforgettable gift. So, why not bring a wide smile on his face and make him special on this day?

Here are some ideas to make the day truly special: If you have an old or damaged photograph of your dad's childhood, get the restore work done in a photo studio and gift him it. This will undeniably make a priceless gift. Take your parents to their favorite restaurant, book a fancy car for them and spend the whole day with them. This is the actual gift what you can give your old dad on the great day, as this is what he and your mom wants most. If your dad is a great lover of music or drama, book season tickets to the local community center or symphony.

Make CDs or DVDs of popular songs of his age which are very close to his heart and gift him. It will make him longing and nostalgic. Collect your dad's childhood, marriage, parenthood, grandchildren, functions, celebrations and family photos; put them in a sequence in a DVD. Keep your dad's favorite songs as background music. Make a donation to a charity in your dad's name or make a contribution to 'plant a tree' program to honor your dad or do similar things. This beautiful gift will make your father feel proud of you.

Travel tips for seniors looking for a hassle-free vacation Statistics are proving that age 70 really is the new 50. According to the U.S. Travel Association, mature travelers ages 65 or older represented 21 percent of all leisure travelers in last year. From taking a trip with their grandchildren across country, to living out dreams in far, exotic destinations, today’s seniors are choosing to enjoy their golden years traveling. Staying safe and being prepared when traveling is more important than ever for this age group. Here are some special considerations for senior travelers looking for a hassle-free travel experience. Plan carefully When planning your trip, stay organized and compile any contact information and travel reservations to keep in a folder to ensure you don’t have any problems. You might also include emergency numbers and family contact information in this folder as well. Whether driving or flying, it’s smart to gather maps ahead of time so you don’t get lost. If you are traveling out of the country, make sure your passport is up to date several months ahead of time as getting a new passport takes time to process. Visit your doctor Schedule a checkup with your doctor before any major trip to discuss the activities you plan to do, and get written prescriptions for any medications you may need. Keep your prescriptions in their original containers so that they can be identified properly. If you plan to travel out of the country, contact the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for required immunizations. Get protection Whether traveling 50 miles or 5,000, prepare for the unexpected by purchasing a membership from a travel and medical assistance company before you leave. These companies provide services like emergency medical transportation to the hospital of their choice, transportation home, worldwide physician referrals, a 24-hour nurse helpline and emergency travel assistance.

Pack carefully When packing for a trip, it’s important to be prepared. Some packing essentials include a comfortable pair of shoes, a hat and sunglasses to protect the face, clothing that you can wear in layers and any necessary personal items.

Lawrence adds The Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval Like his colleagues at Lawrence Hospital Center, Dr. Peter Rizzo, a third generation orthopedic surgeon, is proud to provide patients with innovative and compassionate care. “Lawrence Hospital looks to be the gold standard for community hospitals,” said Dr. Rizzo, the Medical Director

of Perioperative Services at Lawrence. “Collectively, we have over 100 years of experience in orthopedics. It’s a very exciting time for us. We have a great program, from the surgeons to the nurses, to everyone else involved. There are great things happening and even more to come.”

Mary Anne Rittenhouse, RN, Orthopedic and Spine Care Coordinator meets with patient, Richard Wolak, to explain what happens aſter he leaves the hospital.

Orthopedic surgeon, Peter Rizzo, MD discusses a treatment plan for one of his patients with Monina Redondo, RN.

For sure, it’s an exciting time for Lawrence, already renowned for its orthopedics and joint replacement surgery. Lawrence, located in Bronxville, recently earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its Joint Replacement Program by demonstrating compliance with national standards for quality healthcare and safety in disease specific care. The certification recognizes Lawrence’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s rigorous standards. Lawrence is one of only 16 hospitals in New York State and one of three in the metro area to achieve such a distinction.

The mission at Lawrence is simple: To provide patients with unmatched care and treatment in a warm and professional environment. Every patient, and their loved ones, is treated as family. The experienced staff will provide you with the confidence and support needed to recover in a cooperative atmosphere focused on compassionate patient care. The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval is a tribute to Lawrence’s continuous improvement throughout the facility through innovation and a commitment to recognized standards of excellence. The Joint Commission’s hospital standards

address important functions relating to the care of patients and the management of hospitals. The standards are developed in consultation with healthcare experts, providers, measurement experts and patients. With ongoing education and the latest therapies designed to reduce pain after a joint replacement, Lawrence’s staff helps patients heal faster and more comfortably. That means they can return home sooner and return to a more active lifestyle after hip and knee replacement surgery. Three days is the average stay after a procedure. Some patients are ready to leave the very same day. continued on next page

to its impressive orthopedic resume The staff at Lawrence is often moved by its work and interaction with patients. Dr. James Smyth smiles as he remembers a woman in her 70s who came to Lawrence for a knee replacement. “She said she was praying for a miracle,” said Dr. Smyth, an anesthesiologist. “She didn’t need a miracle. She had a knee replacement years ago and all she needed was a change in process. Everything worked out and she felt great. That really gives you a sense of purpose. You realize that you can really make a difference in someone’s life.” The advancement of orthopedics at Lawrence has been accompanied by new procedures that minimize pain following joint replacement

surgery and requires less medication and sedatives. The number of blood transfusions has decreased from 25 to just three percent during procedures. “I’m so excited about all the hard work we put in for the accreditation,” Dr. Smyth said. “There was a real sense of teamwork and camaraderie and we worked hard for the certification. We are all proud of this. Everyone came together and it’s a culmination of everyone’s hard work and dedication.” Lawrence features a multidisciplinary team that works together to provide successful joint replacement surgery. Before surgery, patients attend pre-op education classes and soon become acquainted

with Lawrence’s popular Comfort Team, which focuses on putting patients on the road to pain-free living and mobility. These caregivers are there to assist you before, during and after surgery. The Comfort Team, which includes nurses, therapists, dieticians and physicians, are committed to providing the highest quality care close to home. Many of their patients who get new joints experience years of spontaneous, painfree movement again.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to really make a difference for patients, said Dr. Patrick McMahon, Lawrence’s Chief of Orthopedics. “You see them before surgery and they are in pain, they are struggling. After the surgery they say ‘My God, the pain is gone.’ It makes you feel good. You can’t beat seeing that smile on their face.” The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval further reinforces Lawrence’s reputation, dedication and innovation. To earn the certification,

Lawrence underwent a voluntary and rigorous on-site survey. The team of Joint Commission surveyors evaluated Lawrence for compliance with standards of care specific to the needs of patients, including infection prevention and control, leadership and medication management. “This certification is evidence that we are doing excellent work at Lawrence, so anyone who needs a new hip or knee does not have to look very far for care,” adds Dr. Rizzo.

Beat the Heat: Summertime Activity Ideas for Elders & Caregivers During the hot months of summer, it is often advisable, for seniors especially, to stay indoors and keep cool. How can you stay active while keeping cool in Westchester County? What can caregivers do to keep elderly loved ones engaged and active? Here are some tips for indoor activities and summertime fun for seniors and caregivers: • Take this time to organize pictures, scrapbooks and share family memories. Plan ahead for the holidays and organize family gifts of photos or a memory book.

• It is a good time to get organized! Slowly go through closets or files, work together on shredding items and cleaning out/organizing.

• Plan ahead for the holidays by putting together gift lists and organizing address books and cards.

• Set a goal to learn something new together…it is great for the brain! Practice a new language (or pick up an old one that you haven’t used in a while, or teach each other if one generation has a jump start); learn a new craft such as crocheting; take an art class (or practice along with one of the art lesson TV shows); learn and practice a new gamechess, cards, the latest board game; read a different genre book than you would usually or join in with an online book club or review Oprah’s old picks.

• Consider audio books if reading is difficult. Check with your local library about Books on Tape/Talking Books programs. • If your loved one enjoys music, consider putting together a special music collection on an ipod or burning a CD and buying a portable CD player that can be easily within reach (it may be a good time to consider burning those old albums to CDs for better portability/ease). • Go “mall walking”. Many malls offer early hours when the mall is open specifically for walkers, but you can also go stroll around any time if you don’t mind the shoppers. • Take in a movie, especially on a hot afternoon when the prices are lower and the air conditioning feels great! • Do a little shopping at the mall or spend some time at a local bookstore and get an iced coffee or treat while you linger over a book or magazine.

• Take a course at the local recreation center or senior center. Courses range from art classes to language lessons to computer classes and much more, usually for very reasonable prices. • Check with local recreation centers and senior centers about other activities. They range from dances to trivia contests and movies to outings and various clubs. If you are a caregiver, go to the local centers and do some research for your loved one to explore what might be interesting. • Consider swimming and water aerobics as an option. Check with your local recreation center about classes and options.

SAFER DRIVING

• Ask your elderly loved one to share a skill/teach you. Perhaps he/she can give you pointers on a craft, show you how to make old family recipes, or tell you about the history of your hometown. • Consider no-cook meals or making items that just require a quick simmer. Stay cool and hydrated with a good mix of fruits and vegetables, in addition to plenty of fluids. Flavor water with oranges, lemon, lime or mint for a treat to encourage water intake.

• Connect with technology! If your loved one is not very tech-savvy and you are, consider setting up a computer and internet connection and giving some basic lessons. Social networking, online support groups, and informational resources can all be useful. A lot of people enjoy playing games online, such as chess and scrabble. Set up Skype or a similar service for video chatting with family members and friends at a distance. • Plan outings to local museums and indoor cultural events.

Does self-esteem affect seniors’ health? High levels of self-esteem might mean better health for seniors, according to a new study. It included 147 people aged 60 and older who were followed for four years. Every two years, they were checked for levels of the stress hormone cortisol, symptoms of depression and degree of self-esteem. Self-esteem was measured by responses to questions such as whether a person felt worthless. The researchers also looked at personal and health factors, such as whether a person was married or single, their economic status and death risk. The study found that maintaining or improving self-esteem could help prevent health problems typically associated with aging, according to the researchers at Concordia University in Montreal. When people’s self-esteem decreased, they had an increase in cortisol levels, and vice versa. The link between selfesteem and cortisol levels was especially strong in people with a history of stress or depression. “Because self-esteem is associated with psychological wellbeing and physical health, raising self-esteem would be an ideal way to help prevent health problems later in life,” study co-leader Sarah Liu said in a university news release. “Improving self-esteem provides real health benefits in seniors. The ultimate solution may be to prevent self-esteem from declining,” she added.
