TRAGEDY OVER THE HUDSON JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Video shared on X captured parts o f a Bell 206 L-4 tour helicopter bro­ ken into pieces as it fell into the Hudson River near heavily popu­ lated downtown Jersey City, on a dank and windy April 10th after­ noon. Video showed parts o f the aircraft tumbling through the air and crashing into the water. The main rotor was still spinning in the sky, separated from the heli­ copter, as the aircraft then hit the water.

In the helicopter, along with the pilot, was a family o f five from Spain that were visiting the New York City area for a com bi­ nation o f business and a mini-va­ cation, according to reports.

Operated by N ew York H elicop­ ters, the aircraft left from a Wall Street heliport just before 3 p.m., according to reports.

Reports o f a downed helicop­ ter sent em ergency crews, from both sides o f the river, to various locations that had been reported along the Hudson. On the New Jersey side, where the aircraft crashed, the fire departments in Jersey City and H oboken were dispatched, along with an assign­ ment from the N ew Jersey R e­ gional Fire Boat Task Force. In addition, vessels from the FDNY. NYPD and US Coast Guard headed for the area. Some o f the original reports sent first respon­ ders to the area near the Colgate Clock.

The helicopter was located just North o f Pier 9 that houses a Port Authority Holland Tunnel ventilation building, in Jersey City. This also dispatched Port Authority o f New York and New Jersey emergency crews to the scene.

At 3:15 p.m., Jersey City Box 272 was transmitted for the crash.

The assignment included Engine Co.'s 6-2-1-5-8, Ladder Co,'s 6-2, Squad 1, Rescue 1, Foam Tender, QRV, MSU, First Battalion C hief Howard Simone and Deputy Chief Loran Hart.

A rapid response o f divers from the NYPD arrived at the scene and went to work locating the victims. That included a mother and father, and three young children, along with the pilot. Vic­ tims were taken to the close-by pier. Divers raised them up to Jer­ sey City firefighters and into the hands o f JC M edical Center EMTs and paramedics.

Life-saving procedures began as Battalion C h ief Simone kept dispatch appraised o f conditions and requested additional ambu­ lances. He reported CPR in progress.

It took divers an hour to ex­ tract the pilot's body from the wreckage because the chopper was so mangled, according to a NY Post report. The pilot, Sean John­ son, 36, was a Navy SEAL vet­ eran. This was his eighth flight o f the day, according to a N ew York Post report.

Four victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and two others pronounced dead at the Jersey City M edical Center, according to Mayor Steven Fulop.

Stress was clearly visible on the faces o f first responders on the pier as investigators and other o f­ ficials arrived on the scene.

Jersey City's O.E.M. command vehicle and the G on g Club were staged at the scene as the investi­ gation commenced.

A salvage vessel from the US Army Corps o f Engineers, New

York District, stood by. As the sun set, NYPD divers hooked up the remains o f the copter-including the cockpit and cabin, the forward por­ tion o f the tail boom, the horizon­ tal stabilizer finlets and the vertical fin-and it was placed on board o f the army vessel. The main rotor blades were not recovered at the time. The search for additional parts continued the next morning.

All pieces o f the w reckage were transported to NT SB laboratories m Washington, DC, as part o f the investigation, according to o ffi­ cials.

The fire on Oak Street began around 4:30 p.m., when M oonachie p o lice started to get calls and radio reports o f a w ork­ ing fire. A s first due units arrived, the structure w as heavily in­ volved. The fire w as contained to the structure and did not extend to the main home.

A NEW AWARD WITH MANY PERSONAL FEELINGS UPS & DOWNS Notes from Ron Jeffers

In April, the International A ssoci­ ation o f Arson Investigators held their annual conference in Atlantic City.

At this conference, the New Jersey Chapter introduced a new award that covered both accidental and incendi­ ary photography. This award has been named in honor o f the late Richie Wolfson, who was a senior fire investigator, and he was also a mentor to many fire scene photogra­ phers and fire investigators.

Wolfson organized the New Jersey Metro Fire Photographers Associa­ tion (NJMFPA). This group was formed after Wolfson held a meeting with local fire photographers at Garfield Engine Co. l's firehouse, where he was a member.

At the IAAI New Jersey Chapter meeting, the Richard S. Wolfson Photography Award was presented to Hasbrouck Heights Fire Official and volunteer Fire Chief Robert Knobloch. Robbie, as he is known by, possesses many credentials. B e­ sides the titles mentioned, he is also the part-time fire officials for Teterboro and a fire investigator for At­ lantic Professional Services. His full-time position is a senior public safety communicator for the NJ State Police.

Coincidentally, Knobloch is also a Life Member o f the NJMFPA, and his late father, Artie Knobloch, was a former president o f the organiza­ tion as well as a former Hasbrouck Heights fire chief.

A long-time friend o f Wolfson's, retired Ocean County Prosecutor's Office Arson Squad Investigator, John Lightbody, had the honor o f presenting the award to Chief Knobloch. Lightbody now operates his own fire investigation business.

Wolfson loved his job and he was always available to offer advice.

Richie served as an expert witness in court and authored a chapter in Fire Engineering's Handbook. He retired from Atlantic Professional Services as a senior fire investigator after a ca­ reer o f over 30-years. He was a vol­ unteer firefighter for 40-years.

One o f Wolfson's proudest accom­ plishments was organizing the NJMFPA to demonstrate the value o f fire scene photographers to the gen­ eral fire service. This year, the group is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

The NJMFPA's annual Photo Night and award ceremonies were at­ tended by many firefighters and buffs from various parts o f the coun­ try, and England! Fire apparatus sales personnel, representatives o f various fire service publications, such as Fire Engineering, Firehouse and 1st Responder News were also

When Robbie was very young, he was upset to see his father, and other club members, leave the house to at­ tend a fire or an apparatus photo shoot. His father would say, “Some­ day, you'll be my driver!”

UPS: In April, Upper Saddle River ex-volunteer Fire Chief John Carlough was recognized by Mayor Fardanesh for his 50-years o f service to the Borough. In addition to being a successful business owner, he also maintained an average 95.5 yearly percentage o f attendance for fire calls and drills, according to a local Facebook post.

DOWNS: On April 20th, a fire in­ volved a perfume manufacturing warehouse in Norwood. HazMat units from Bergen County and the New Milford F.D. were called in due to the different chemicals used at the facility. The New Milford Haz Mat team was used to decon over 50 fire­ fighters and their gear due to the chemicals involved, according to a department Facebook post.

DOWNS: In April, a wildfire con­ sumed many thousands o f acres in the area o f Jones and Bryant roads in Ocean Township. Authorities said the fire was within the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust's Forked River Mountains Wilderness Area. Manda­ tory evacuations o f homes were or­ dered and some commercial buildings were burned. Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer, N.J. DEP Commissioner Shawn La Tourette and Ocean Town­ ship Chief o f Police Michael Rogalski announced that on April 23rd,

Quick thinking EMT's Carlos Cabanilla, Alexis Alexander, Jaynina Lyons and Rigoberto Estevez ran into the building and alerted and assisted over 15 occupants, and their pets, out to safety before the arrival o f fire companies. They also evacu­ ated an exposure building.

Whippany Ladder 22 has been placed into service with a 2024 Pierce Enforcer 2000-gpm/480-gwt-20-gft/107 Ft. Ascendant quint. The cab has six seats and two storage cabinets. The extended front bumper has three hose baskets and two discharge gates and there are three crosslay hose beds. There is a rear camera and another camera is mounted on the officer side of the cab. This unit also possesses a 6.5 kW generator. It was sold by Fire & Safety Services.

Manville has placed into service a 2025 E-One Cyclone 2000gpm/290-gwt/10-gft/95-foot platform. The extended front bumper has a "Jump Line" discharge and the cab has seating for six mem­ bers. The bucket has a Stream Master monitor, a discharge gate, plus telescoping scene lights. In addition, there are two crosslay beds, scene lights, roll-out tool trays, a Honda GX 2000 6.5 kW portable generator and roll-out tool trays. Ground ladders and pike poles are stored in torque box compartments. It was sold by Ab­ solute Fire Protection Co.

HADDONFIELD, NJ - On April 23rd at 3:10 P.M., Task Force 14 (Haddon Fire Company Engine and Ladder Companies, Cherry Hill Ladder 24, Westmont Squrt 15, Had­ don Heights Engine 2, Lawnside Squad 272), was dispatched to 408 Spruce Street for the report o f a dwelling fire. The fire was reported by a US Postal Service letter carrier in the area.

While responding, Haddonfield Fire Chief 14, Pat Gorman, reported a large column in the air and re­ quested the All Hands signal, which brought in Magnolia Squad 29 and Cherry Hill EMS. Engine 14, the first due unit, arrived within four minutes to a two-story, single-frame

Engine 14 stretched a two-and-ahalf-inch attack hand line to knock down the main body o f fire and ini­ tiate interior attack.

Upon his arrival. Chief Gorman ordered the second-alarm transmit­ ted (Collingswood Squad 16, Oaklyn Ladder 18, and Cherry Hill Rehab 13) after a report that an o c­ cupant might be trapped. CHFD Ladder 24 and Squad 13 were as­ signed rescue operations. It was soon determined that all occupants were accounted for.

While performing interior fire attack, conditions deteriorated, fire further extended through the secondfloor, and a Haddonfield firefighter partially fell through a burnt out floor, so Haddonfield Assistant Chief Bob Henry, Operations Chief, or­ dered all members to withdraw from the fire building and a PAR was con­ ducted. After the fire darkened, units transitioned back to an offensive op­ eration and overhaul and final extin­ guishment were completed.

The fire was declared under con­ trol at 3:50 PM. The fire is being in­ vestigated by the local and county fire marshal.

Firefighters Respond to Basement Fire in West Cape May W EST CAPE MAY, NJ - On April 4th at 2:22 PM., West Cape May Station 57, Cape May Station 51 A-Shift and Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Department Engine 58 were dispatched to the 100 block o f Broadway in West Cape May for a commercial fire alarm.

West Cape May fire ch ief ar­ rived on scene to find smoke com ­ ing from the basement o f the residence. Engine 51 stretched a hand line to the basement and the fire was quickly extinguished. A first-alarm was transmitted, which brought the US Coast Guard En­ gine 59 to assist with ventilation while Engine 57 & 58 crews

checked for extension to the rest o f the building and assisted with overhaul.

Erma Fire Company Engine 62 provided coverage for the city.

Crews operated on scene for ap­ proximately one hour before clearing. An electric scooter that was charging may have started the fire, but the exact cause requires further investigation by the Cape May County Fire Marshal's O f­ fice.

Exterior Fire Extends to Garage in Closter CLOSTER, NJ - On the warm Saturday afternoon o f April 19th, Northern Valley firefighters w ould make quick work o f a garage fire.

A Battalion 2 South box was sounded for units to respond into Closter Jump TOFILE# just after 3:00 P.M. 041S125101 for PD reporting smoke coming from m a house. Demarest C hief M cLoughlin & arrived on scene at 219 Cedar Ln to find an exterior fire extending to a two-story de­ tached garage in the rear o f the home.

Closter Engine 762 and D e­ marest Ladder 469 arrived on scene and stretched a one-and three-quarter-inch hand line to the front o f the building. A secondalarm was transmitted as the exte­ rior fire was extinguished first before entering the garage to ex­ tinguish any fire that had extended into the structure.

Crews opened up and venti­ lated the garage as a second hand line was stretched. The fire was knocked down within 10 minutes, but crews remained on scene to hit any hot spots. Mutual A id from Northvale, Norwood, Flarrington Park, Flaworth, and Demarest as­ sisted on scene. No injuries were reported, and the fire is under in­ vestigation.

York as a new s manager at a TV station. He doubles as a volunteer EM T after his w ork hours in his hom etow n in N ew Jersey. The name o f the town is fictitious. It is a small town, w hich I estimate w ould be in Union County. It is so small that the m em bers are permit­ ted to respond from their hom es overnight because there are no beds at the squad station. The m ul­ titude o f squad calls are ones that cou ld happen in real life and I can relate to them, as I w orked part time as an EM T in my hom etown with a private am bulance service that was primary for the city. The strain o f both jo b s caused the main character to unwind with alcohol and at tim es made his alertness questionable to his partners on calls. The b ook is in tw o parts. Part one ended very badly! Part two, w hich started three years later, is com pletely different than part one.

The author did both o f these jobs, but without the alcoh ol problem.

The b ook ends on a high note. It is a lesson to be had by all and I pre­ scribe it as an excellent b o o k to read.

Garden A partm ent Fire in B ergenfield BERGENFIELD, NJ - A contents fire struck a garden apart­ ment in the Foster Village Complex at 32 Howard Drive on April 4th. Companies were dispatched at 8:30 P.M., and found smoke issuing from a second-floor apartment. A working fire was transmitted, bringing Englewood and Dumont to the scene. Two lines were stretched and Englewood Truck 1 went to the roof. The fire was quickly knocked down and placed under control in 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.

W oodbridge F irs t A larm W orking Fire WOODBRIDGE, NJ - During the morning hours of Saturday, April 5th, Woodbridge Fire Department, Avenel Truck 5 and Port Reading Engine 2-1 were dispatched to the 200 block of Freeman St. for a reported fire. The call was quickly updated to visible smoke and flames from the back of the house.

While responding, 1-3-5 had a column of smoke in the air and requested two additional engine companies. Upon arrival of the battalion chief, he had a two-story, multi-family structure class V with smoke showing from the rear division 2 balcony and requested a first-alarm, bringing in an engine from Perth Amboy and an RIT team from Hopelawn. It was quickly deter­ mined to be an exterior fire and contents burning on the bal­ cony, which was quickly knocked by a can while two hose lines were being stretched. There was no extension into the residence, and the fire was placed under control shortly after.

This year we are also celebrat­ ing the second anniversary o f artist JarrydLey o f West Deptford, N.J., who has join ed forces with Getsinger to create a unique 3-D fundraising image o f Getsinger’ s artwork for this convention. The title for this year’ s image will be: “ Let me Flelp.”On January 25th, Joe, his son, Thomas, and his grandson. Max, along with Jarryd traveled to Cinnaminson Fire D e­ partment to do this year’ s photo­ shoot. With the support o f Cinnaminson’ s Fire Chief, Philip Drangula, and his crew, Getsinger and his group, envisioned a rescue scene utilizing Joe’ s grandson who was the perfect age for this year’ s Burn Foundation image. Before the photoshoot, members o f the Cinnaminson Fire Department gave young Max a tour o f the fire station, apparatus and even gave him a fire helmet to take home.

Firefighter Joe Vazquez who gave Max the tour also geared up for the photoshoot. Members who as­ sisted at the photoshoot were: C. J. Ricciuti, Matt Deeney, Chris O’ Leary, Dennis Staples and Chance Brittain. Thanks for your service and support.

Jarryd Ley assisted in the c o ­ ordination o f the poses while Joe did a 360-degree photoshoot to aid Jarryd with the image for the 3-D model o f the art he will produce.

The two will develop the final image to be used for the print that will be displayed at the convention and utilized as the fundraiser for the Burn Foundation. The 3-D m odel will also be on display at Bum Foundation’ s table on stage at the fire equipment expo. Copies o f the artwork and 3-D image will be for available to see at the con­ vention. The number one framed G iclee’canvas print o f “ LET ME F1ELP”will be the top prize at the raffle along with 25 limited edition prints signed by both Joe Getsinger and Jarryd Ley. S econd-A larm F ire D estroys Hom es in B elm ar BELMAR, NJ - On April 13th just after 6:00 AM., Belmar Fire Department was dispatched to the 300 block o f 13th Avenue for a re­ ported structure fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters were confronted with heavy fire condi­ tions from two pri­ vate dwellings with exposure. A 2nd alarm was transmit­ ted, bringing firefighters from neighboring fire departments.

Firefighters battled the blaze for over two hours. There were no injuries, and the fire is under inves­ tigation.

Media: Friend or Foe Chaplain’s Corner Didymus McHugh

Television is great for getting information out to the public, to a point. It is great for letting us know about where the traffic is or what they think that the weather will be.

We need to keep what we watch and how much into check.

There are some news junkies or media junkies who have to watch media for what traumatic things happened all around the world that never effects their life. These peo­ ple may watch things so much that they think they are experts on the event.

I have been at disasters where we had to set up shelters to take care o f the people effected by the actual event. We did not permit any television in there because we needed to protect the people from what the media had speculated hap­ pened, responsibilities and more.

The media puts out information, at times, without checking facts or waiting for people to do an official notification. We had a person who walked into a shelter and an­ nounced a child's death. The person only heard rumors around the scene. Were the family members ever notified? Did the public infor­ mation officer ever have the chance to make the notification with the appropriate resources standing by?

No, this individual thought he was the news reporter.

When I used to talk with new people, I would say that a good call would be where everyone comes home and nobody shows up on so­ cial media. Right now, almost everyone can and do make them­ selves reporters. They film what­ ever they want. Some people say freedom o f the press but they are not responsible. There are people who avoid HIPAA laws and com ­ mon decency. It's bad enough that emergency responders have to see the horrors that are in the streets, that we accept it as just another day.

Why do others think that it is al­ right to expose others to the trauma that we have to see?

There are also emergency re­ sponders who are irresponsible that instead o f working the scene, they are filming it and posting it on so­ cial media or giving the video to television stations. They have not social responsibility. Many times

these people do not know that they are also exposing their department and others open to lawsuits.

I remember a fire instructor who was showing a video to other in­ structors a fire that he was at where five children died as a result. The in­ structor kept saying how good this fire was. I asked the instructor to shut it o ff and have some respect for the dead. He refused saying that it was a good fire. I asked if he had to work with the family as each child died. I told him that any fire that takes five innocent lives is not a "good fire". It took the senior fire in­ structor to tell him that if the chap­ lain asks you not to show it, have some respect.

How many times did we have to watch the planes fly into the towers?

How many people around the world were traumatized, when they did not know anyone in the buildings o f have any connection to the areas? I know that others will think differ­ ently but they do not think about trauma effect innocent lives.

When we went to fires and dis­ asters, we would not know every­ thing that was going on. We would just focus on our assignment because many times that was all the informa­ tion that we received, even if we were listening to the scanner. Some­ times we only found out what hap­ pened what happened and who responder, by reading the newspaper or the television the day after.

When talking to people about what they see at certain incidents, I mention not to talk about it on scene.

Not to talk about it in the apparatus.

The place that it should be discussed is at the station with the shades drawn down, doors shut and only people that you trust in the room.

You never know who is catching what on video and what technology that they have.

Each individual has a responsi­ bility o f what they record, post and also put into their brain by watching it. There is so much trauma on tele­ vision and other media. We have to be good stewards o f what we say and what we put into our brains.

People say that they have free­ dom o f speech or freedom o f the press but that does not give you free­ dom o f the consequences for the words that are spoken or made pub­ lic.

You deserve not to be exposed to trauma that was not in your life. Take care o f yourself.

Members of North Arlington Ladder Co. 3 utilized a ladder pipe operation during a fire in a recycling business structure on Porete av., April 18th. The truss roof experienced a collapse during the early stages of the fire. There were no injuries. Ladder 3 is a 2004 KME 100-foot unit.

M a jo r O b stacle s O vercom e in P aterson M u ltip le PATERSON, NJ - Some unique challenges were faced by Paterson and mutual aid companies as they battled a five-alarm blaze on April 13th in a building that once housed a bank many years ago.

At 6:40 PM, on arrival, a light smoke condition was showing from 167 Market Street in the middle o f downtown Paterson, across the street from City Hall. The fourstory building with large columns in front was being occupied as a furniture store after ceasing to be a bank decades ago.

Firefighters cut the roll-down front door and accessed the base­ ment through the Bilco doors on the sidewalk. Heavy gray smoke issued from the doors as companies

searched for the seat o f the fire.

Two lines were stretched. A secondalarm followed by a third was trans­ mitted as the seat o f the fire could not be located. At 7:20 PM, all companies were withdrawn to re­ group due to heavy smoke and ob­ stacles, including a vault in the basement. The deep-seated fire in the basement prompted a fourthalarm to be sounded for additional manpower at 7:40 PM. Light smoke was showing from the roof and a re­ quest for the Police Drone Unit to respond. Light smoke was also showing from 165 Market St. en­

trance and floors above. Companies re-entered and were making slow progress, but the deep-seated fire could not be accessed. Hackensack Air Unit and the Hackensack UASI Rescue was requested to assist in breaching the thick bank floor to get to the basement fire.

The fire was then deemed a fifth-alarm. An opening to the base­ ment was completed and progress was being made. At 1:30 AM, the blaze was placed 'probably will hold' and some units began to be re­ leased. Two firefighters were trans­ ported to the hospital, one due to a fall and one with heat exhaustion.

The cause is under investigation.

F a st-M o vin g G arage F ire C o ntain ed in Elm w ood P ark ELMWOOD PARK, NJ - A stubborn, multi-alarm fire con­ sumed a garage and heavily dam­ aged a shed and a home in Elmwood Park on the after­ noon of April 27th.

As Chief Ed Majescykie arrived, a two-car garage was fully involved at 429 River Rd. with vehicles in­ side. The fire had already extended to a shed and the exterior o f a home at 3 Phillip Ave. The flames quickly con­ sumed the garage, and the roof collapsed.

Elmwood Park police, fire­ fighters and EMTs were assisted

by Garfield, Fair Lawn, Saddle Brook and Clifton firefighters at the scene, and those from Lodi, Rochelle Park and Maywood in coverage. Elmwood Park fire pre­ vention is investigating the cause.

No injuries were reported.

Fire Doors Firefighters rarely get Involved In determining the cause of a fire. That doesn’t mean that firefighters should be com ­ pletely uninformed about the cause and/or how a fire will spread at a given location as they may be Involved In the gathering of evidence at the behest of a fire Investigator or at the very least leave any po­ tential evidence Intact during overhaul. Further, fire opera­ tions may depend on some of these factors such as the pres­ ence and proper operation of fire doors.

Relative to fire doors specifi­ cally why would an Instructor even breach this topic with firefighters since It has more to do with code compliance?

First, as mentioned firefighters may have to assist In preserv­ ing potential evidence In a fire or bring attention to an Inves­ tigator so being able to recog­ nize a code violation will certainly assist any Investiga­ tion. Beyond that fire code compliance which Is where fire door and Inspections would fall rounds out a firefighter’s knowledge so It’s not just "putting the wet stuff on the red stuff” and lastly, firefight­ ers may simply want to expand their options Into a parallel ca­ reer.

So, what exactly Is a "fire door”? From a firefighter per­ spective any door that sepa­ rates a fire room from the rest of a structure fire could be a fire door. This Is In reference to Vent, Enter, Isolate and Search (VEIS). However, the definition of a fire door Is much more comprehensive.

NFPA 80 defines what a fire door Is, Its Installation, materi­ als that It can be made of, latching devices and labeling req ulrements to name a few of the chapters.

Since the parameters of a fire door are extrem ely varied a good starting point may sim­ ply be what a fire door Is not.

Again, from a firefighting standpoint a fire door may be

any door to or within a struc­ ture. Whereas any door may block fire for a certain time maybe only seconds In the case of a hollow wooden bed­ room door that door would not be deflnltlonally labeled as a fire door and simply putting a fire door sign on a door does not automatically transform that door Into a fire door. A good operational definition would be a "type of door or barrier used as passive fire protection within a structure to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.

For starters a fire door has to be labeled as such from the manufacturer. Any door that does not have a proper label Is not considered a fire door. The label below Is generic but a typical fire door label that Is found mostly on the spine of the door but sometimes on the top of the door.

The most Important part of label for firefighters would be the FD rating assuming a pre­ plan has been conducted the fire rating will give firefighters a general Idea of how much time they have when setting up operations toextlngulsh a fire.

Fire door ratings are as fol­ lows: NFR - non-fire related FD30 - 30 minutes or fire re­ sistance FD60 - 60 minutes of fire re­ sistance FD90 - 90 minutes of fire re­ sistance FD 120 - 120 minutes of fire re­ sistance Since there may not be much left after a fire relative to a fire door and whether or not that fire door was operational the key Is proper and consistent Inspections. Inspections aren’t worth all that much If they are not thoroughly documented.

Although NFPA 80 Indicates fire doors are at a minimum to be Inspected annually they should be Inspected at least every six months. Fire Investl-

g ators/lnspectors typically will have a checklist designed by/for the employer but may also contain additional person­ alized Information based on the experience of the Inspec­ tor. Here are thirteen Items that should be looked for all the time: 1) Labels are present and legi­ ble. Manufacturer labels on a fire door can not be removed or painted over.

2) No holes or breaks In the door or frame. Once a fire door Is drilled Into It Is usually com­ promised but the standard does allow any holes to be filled with stainless steel bolts to retain fire door status.

3) Glazing and glass kit - glass beads are Intact and securely fastened.

4) Door, fram e and hardware are In proper working order and/or not broken loose or missing.

5) No missing or broken parts.

Although the standard does

not specify a time frame for re­ pair they should be done “with­ out delay”.

6) Door clearances are within allowable limits all around. A door gap tool pictured below helps determine proper door gaps.

7) Door closer spring Is opera­ tional and the door closes and latches by Itself. There should be no door stop Installed on the door. Fire doors should al­ ways remain closed otherwise or what’s the point? An excep­ tion would be doors held open by an electromagnet that the fire alarm system disengages when activated.

8) Door leaves (on a double door) close In proper se­ quence.

9) Door Is self-latching In closed position - helps ensure the door remains closed to deter fire, heat and toxic gasses. Fire doors should NEVER be propped open.

10) No auxiliary hardware that would Interfere with proper op­ eration such as an aftermarket lock or door stop that prevents the door from closing 11) The manufacturers label Is not void meaning compro­

mised by afield modification.

12) Gasketing and edge seal­ ing are present, continuous and proper type. Not all fire doors have gasketing however.

13) Signage on the door takes up less than 5% of the space on the door. Also, signage can­ not be attached with mechani­ cal fasteners such as nails or screws and cannot Interfere with the operation of the door.

Drills for firefighters that In­ volve fire doors would simply be adding an Inspection to a pre-plan. Instructors can also tap Into the competitive nature of firefighters and create a contest by providing an In­ spection checklist and asking firefighters to complete In­ spections for all the fire doors In the fire house with the win­ ner having the most accurate Information. Make no mistake NFPA 80 Is very comprehen­ sive and having knowledge of fire door and Inspections of will go a long way toward fire prevention, fire operations and after the fact Investigations.

Black Elorse Pike and reported fire showing from the third-floor o f a three-story frame building with a business on the first-floor and apartments above on the 2nd and 3rd floors.

Companies went to work on an interior attack and then transi­ tioned to defensive ops for a brief period before returning to the in­ terior. Electric and utility lines prohibited any meaningful aerial apparatus work from division A. One civilian perished in the fire.

Second-Alarm S trike s W oodbridge Home on Easter Sunday WOODBRIDGE, NJ - At around2:33 RM. on Easter Sunday, April 20th, Woodbridge and Avenel fire departments were dispatched to the 600 building o f Maple Hill Drive for the reported unknown type fire. Around a minute after, dispatch advised incoming units they had multiple callers saying the house was on fire and that there was a dog inside, and that the deck o f the residence was also on fire.

At around 2:37 P.M., battalion 3 stated he had a fire that extended into the building and requested a first-alarm box. Woodbridge En­ gine 1 pulled up in front o f Truck 1 and secured a water supply while Truck 1was setting up the ladder to go to the roof. Three minutes since the first arriving unit, crews had two lines stretched and working, a positive primary water supply.

It was deemed that it was a deck fire that had extended into the residence, and crews had heavy fire conditions in the rear kitchen o f the building. Apropane tank was found on the back deck and county hazmat was requested. The fire ex­ tended up through division 2, up into the cockloft. Avenel took the second line and advanced it into the attic division. Iselin’ s engine com ­ pany went in the bucket o f Truck 1 and started venting the roof due to heavy fire conditions and condi­ tions rapidly deteriorating. Crews had high heat and zero visibility.

Companies also had fire in the walls impeaching exposure apart­ ments.

At around 2:50 RM., all visible fire on division 1 was knocked

from the interior and exterior lines.

There was still fire showing from the roof and attic divisions whilst Iselin was cutting the roof. At around 2:52 RM., all visible fire was knocked in the attic. Deputy 1 took over command whilst battal­ ion 3 took operations. Engine 2-2 and Engine 7-1 secured a second­ ary water supply.

At around 2:55 RM., all exte­ rior fire was reported to be knocked down, as well as a good headway in the attic. There was no extension in the basement, although there was a moderate smoke condition. At around 3:00 RM., crews still had hot spots, but were unable to reach them due to the roof being unstable from too many holes.

All interior fire was knocked down and crews began overhaul and secondary searches. During secondary searches, a crew located the missing dog, found alive and well but with some smoke inhala­ tion. It was taken by animal control to get further checked. After exten­ sive overhaul and mopping up, the fire was marked under control.

Units operating included Woodbridge Engine 1, Truck 1, Rescue 1; Port Reading Engine 22; Avenel Engine 5-1; Fords Engine 7-1; Hopelawn Rescue 8; Iselin Squad 9-6; Perth Am boy Engine 1;Edison Engine 3 Rescue 6.

One firefighter was injured after a fire broke out at a furniture store in Paterson on the evening of April 13th. The fire started at 167 Market Street around 6:30pm. Firefighters had a hard time getting to the source due to maze-like conditions inside a sub basement of the building. Deputy Chief AJ Woods transmitted 4 alarms with several special calls for units, including special units from Hack­ ensack. At one point, companies had to drill through a floor and break through almost 12-inches of concrete flooring to get to the fire. Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh praised firefighters for keeping the fire from spreading. Sayegh also said one firefighter was hurt after he fell down. He was taken to the hospital in stable condition. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Camden Engine 10 was first to ar­ rive and reported smoke showing from the secondfloor.

E-10 stretched a one-andthree-quarter-inch hand line to the second-floor and initiated the fire attack. Camden BC Dan Baker ar­ rived and transmitted the all hands fire signal for a working fire in a two-and-a-half, wood-frame, sin­ gle-family dwelling. The all hands signal brought in Collingswood, Oaklyn, Audubon, and Gloucester City fire departments.

The fire spread through the second-floor and extended into the attic area. As the fire spread to the attic area, the roof partially collapsed and the crews were or­ dered out of the building and a de­ fensive operation commenced.

Crews utilized master streams and numerous hand lines to extinguish this stubborn fire. Camden Car 1, Fire Chief Jesse Flax, placed the fire under control at 10:23 A.M. Several units remained on loca­ tion until the early afternoon over­ hauling and extinguishing hot spots.

APPARATUS FROM MORRIS COUNTY This month we go a little further north to Morris County. The county seat is Morristown where George Washington's headquarters had been.

In the photos featured this month is a Pierce tractor-drawn aerial from Mor­ ristown and three apparatus from Morris Township. They are two EONE 75-foot quints. One is new and the other rebuilt. The third is an EONE pumper refurbed by Brindlee Mountain. Adding to these is a Spar­ tan ER Star pumper with an attractive paint scheme from Randolph Town­ ship (Shongum Mountain), a Hahn pumper from Jefferson Township FC 1 which they refer to as their antique, and finally Tanker A-29 of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service. This Type 4 vehicle has an updated chassis. You may notice a different red paint shade between the body and chassis. It's coverage area includes Morris County.

In apparatus news, in Toms River Township (Ocean County) a transfer was made of Ocean Beach FC's 2000 ALF Eagle quint to the Pleasant Plains FC. It has a 2000-gpm pump, 400-gallon water tank and 75-foot LTI aerial. Ocean Beach received a Pierce quint recently.

Campbell Supply Co., LLC is prepping two Spartan ER pumpers for Bergen County. Both have Metro Star chassis. One is for Upper Saddle River and has an EMFD chassis, fiveinch raised roof cab, Waterous CSU 1500-gpm pump and 950-gallon water tank. The second is for Fairview and has a 10-inch raised roof cab, Water­ ous CMU 1500-gpm pump and 500gallon water tank. The have the following Spartan ER orders: for Rah­ way, (Union County), an Extreme Duty pumper on a Metro Star MFD chassis. It will have a 10-inch raised roof cab, Waterous CMU two-stage 1500-gpm pump and 750-gallon water tank. Next is for the Port Reading FD in Woodbridge Township (Middlesex County) and is a Star pumper with Metro Star LFD chassis, 10-inch raised roof cab, Hale Qmax 2000-gpm pump, 1000-gallon water and 50-gallon foam tanks. Next is for Freehold FD (Monmouth County) and is for a Star pumper with Metro Star LFD chassis, 10-inch raised roof cab, Wa­ terous CSU 2000-gpm pump and 750gallon water tank and finally for the New Milford FD (Bergen County) and is a Star pumper with Metro Star LFD chassis, 10-inch raised roof cab, Waterous CSU 1500-gpm pump and 500-gallon water tank.

The Madison Park FC in Old Bridge Township (Middlesex County) has ordered an E-ONE Typhoon HP75 foot quint with 2000-gpm pump and 500-gallon water tank.

Bradley Beach (Monmouth County) has purchased a 2001 Sutphen Monarch 2000/750/30 pumper from the Broughton FC in Allegheny County, PA. Firefighter 1 has delivered the Fouts FOUR quick attack to Buena Borough in Atlantic County.
