A Harvest of Beers By Pete Johnson

The days are getting shorter, the kids are heading back to school and the football crowd seems to be getting a little twitchy. As summer draws to a close, we’ve got bellies full of blueberries , we’ve been crabbed up to our craniums, and we’ve got sockeye coming out of our eye sockets. As fall rolls in and we prepare ourselves for the harvest season it’s time to ask, “what’s next?” Well, how about a beer? Bellingham seems to have embraced beer culture with a vengeance. Every few months new brew pubs and breweries are popping up all over the place. What seemed to have started years ago with Chuckanut and Boundary Bay breweries has now expanded to include a myriad of microbreweries and tap houses. Bellingham alone is now home to Kulshan, Wander, Elizabaeth Station , Aslan, The Local, McKay’s Taphouse, Archer’s Ale House, Copper Hog, Green Frog, and Hops & Headz just to name a few. In fact as I sit here writing this I can hear the neighbors out back mid construction of Stone’s Throw Brewery in Fairhaven. I did get a quick tour and can’t wait to see the “5 ton chiller” in action. Which, coincidentally, would be the coolest band name ever.

and Bellingham was voted the top “Beer Snob City” in the nation! This was based on the percentage of establishments that refused to offer run of the mill Bud Light , Coors Light, or Miller Light. Fully, 92% of our restaurants and bars refuse to serve these lesser beverages. With upwards of 100 beers on tap we’re much more likely to twirl our curly mustaches and order a “Hop Howdy Belgian Blonde”. Possibly our middle aged uncle with the bald spot and pony tail, who by the way is still wearing socks and sandals because the rain hasn’t started yet, will proudly request a “Local Logger Lager”. And likely our neighbor’s hipster kid who just turned 21 will want It would seem our collective to try a “Disco Lemonade”. psyche may be symptomatic of “beer issues”. of opportunities/excuses to have a beer in the upcoming months. Bellingham Beer Week, which seems much too short, begins September 11th, will offer no fewer than 20 events for you to explore the expanding universe of beer. You can find details online at www.bellinghambeerweek.com. The list of events includes a kid friendly benefit for families grieving a recent death, a rooftop movie in the parkade, and even an event to sample the strangest sounding beers.

But what really is all this talk about beer guzzling and lederhosen doing in a Body, Mind and Spirit publication? Ultimately we can use this as an opportunity to celebrate community and culture. It may not be on par with Italian opera or French artwork, but like it or not, it is us. Beer has always represented the working class and the average person. But particularly Z in the Pacific Northwest, beer really seems to embrace the paradigm of local home grown business competing with the corporate big boys. Not just the concept of local products but also giving many people an opportunity to make a living doing something they love. And many breweries are also embracing organic and non-GMO ingredients as well. So all of us, even those of us who don’t drink much (or at all), can still appreciate the grass roots industry and the resulting fellowship from this drink called beer.

But we couldn’t possibly stop there, after all, this is Pete spent 20 years in corporate a bi-monthly publication. A Walk

We asked these Hamsters, “What do you like best about the arrival of fall?”

I went for a walk It was in my mind you see A day time dream of a whole body I walked through my neighborhood And marveled at the spring I recognized the flowers And the birds with their new babies I followed the path Past the giant evergreens To the rocky shore Down to the sea I drank in the midday sun Watched the life in the tidal pools Took off all my clothes and went swimming And thought of you Then I laid on a rock for hours One with everything Watched the sunset with my feet in the sand Made a prayer of a song I sing Then it was time to return home I floated back to where my body lay I prepared myself for the reality I must own It’s in a wheelchair that I spend my days

“My favorite fall event is hands down going to any sort of pumpkin patch. I love heading out to a farm on a crisp fall afternoon to pick out the best pumpkin possible to be carved later. Pumpkin patches always remind me of the one that my family’s farm put on each fall. The combination of excitement over getting to pick a pumpkin and getting to eat a lot of tasty treats that my mama had baked definitely made the pumpkin patch a highlight of the fall season. As I’ve grown older I still look forward to a good pumpkin patch as a sign of the season changing from summer to fall.”

Have You Heard... Mystery Show By Joel Simler

Muse Tip - Podcasts are growing in popularity in both the listenership and production aspect. Here at the Muse, Joel is well versed in weeding thru the jungle of good and bad podcasts. His column can help point you toward something (CAUTION) you might become addicted to. For past reviews and general podcast information visit www.BellinghamMuse.com and select the ‘Have You Heard’ link under the ‘B’MUSED’ tab.

The internet. It has everything, doesn’t it? Surely everything of note is documented in some way on the internet, right? Yes, that may be at least somewhat true... But what of those questions that the internet cannot answer for us? Such as where did that old high school friend disappear to after graduation? Is Sadighi’s really a Bellingham hangout for the mob? Or more importantly, where did my nice pair of ear phones go? Luckily for all of us, there is a new P.I. on the case, someone who has recognized mysteries throughout her entire life, and has reached a breaking a point and can no longer stand these mysteries being mysteries. Enter Starlee Kine, a P.I. with a flashlight so bright that no darkened corner is unlit, no vault un-cracked, and no European chef/cowboy unquestioned... Starlee Kine created and stars in the new podcast from Gimlet Media, Mystery Show. Mystery Show is a fine blend of story driven podcasting, and purely entertaining reality PI investigating. What is not a mystery in this show, is why it is so freaking entertaining. On the surface, Mystery Show doesn’t sound like much; host Starlee Kine attempts to investigate and solve mysteries for listeners that range from “what happened to that video store down the street” to “how tall is Jake Gyllenhaal?” However mundane the mystery may seem, often it turns out to be uncommonly exciting. This is often because of Starlee, and her inquisitive and delightful demeanor channeled through her Private Investigator persona. Starlee has a knack for interviewing unsuspecting people in a way that creates leads on her case, as well as gaining insight to the hopes and dreams of strangers for no other reason than curiosity. Often she approaches people who may be apprehensive for whatever reason, and within seconds of talking with Starlee and hearing her disarming chuckle, they almost immediately give in and have an amazingly amusing conversation with her.

Creator and host of Mystery Show show, I was hooked from the first full two minutes of episode one. However it wasn’t until episode three, “Belt Buckle”, that I fell in love. In this episode, Starlee is tasked with tracking down the owner of a belt buckle. A belt buckle that was found by a young boy back some 20 odd years ago, and held onto for all this time, because this belt buckle is without a doubt the coolest you have ever seen. Picture a belt buckle, with a chef hat, pan with 2 eggs frying, a tiny toaster with functional popping toast from a tiny lever, and the inscriptions “Hans Jordi” and “in appreciation, Bob Six”.

but I trusted Starlee and that she wouldn’t lead me astray from a captivating and worthwhile show. In this episode, Starlee and her friend have their own mystery to solve. Why does an elderly lady have a license plate that reads ‘”Iluv911”? Surely this license plate can’t be referring to September 11th, 2001, can it? Maybe it’s a reference to loving the police instead? Is it something else entirely? Trust me, like I trusted Starlee, and believe that this episode is a good one and well worth the - Starlee Kine listen.

not an easy one. Not easy because it involves seeking out and talking to one of the hardest to interview celebrities out there, Britney Spears. In this second episode of Mystery Show, Starlee is set out by a relatively unknown author, Andrea Seigel, to find out why and how Britney Spears came to be in a picture holding her book “To Feel Stuff”. There is one specific moment in the show that really speaks to Starlee’s interviewing/ investigating abilities, and that is with a kindly Ticketmaster customer service agent named Dennis. What follows is a conversation that moves from questions about a meet and greet at a Britney concert, then evolves into a rhapsodic interchange on life and how it relates to “dog piles”.

If you’ve listened to those two episodes, then likely you don’t need a third suggestion because you’ll want to hear every episode anyway. However if you’re still not sure and need one more suggestion, then listen Found in a gutter, and cared for to episode four “Vanity Plate”. by a kid grown into adulthood I was not too sure about this finally seeking its rightful owner. episode when I started listening, Follow Starlee as she wades into a gaggle of European chefs that located to Arizona in the 1960’s, as well as an art teacher that taught Hans Jordi to paint the horizon on a beach. Will she meet this tall mysterious man with the missing belt buckle? Listen, and find the answer, as well as much more.

Now when I first heard this This next case is most certainly

Having first been aired this past May, Mystery Show has just completed its first season and is in the works of its second (yes!). Mystery Show is a podcast that can make me both figuratively and literally LOL more than any show I’ve listened too in a while. The show has a feeling reminiscent of Serial, but is presented in a light-hearted more comedic way. Although Starlee Kine, has no experience as a P.I., it turns out she is easily the most entertaining investigator that I have heard. Do you have a mystery in your life? Then Starlee Kine’s Mystery Show may be your best bet for having it solved.

Paving the Way for Medical Cannabis By Jesse Knowles With the recent changes in some states’ legislation concerning the legality of cannabis, its no wonder that many people are beginning to see cannabis in a different light. While many people choose to use cannabis recreationally, others choose to use it for medicinal purposes. Unfortunately, many Americans remain skeptical or unclear about cannabis’ medicinal nature and continue to view cannabis solely as a drug that gets users “high”. The federal government’s classification of cannabis as a Schedule I drug helps fuel this skepticism as a Schedule I classification means “that the substance has no currently accepted medical treatment use in the U.S.” However, 23 states now have laws allowing medical marijuana use for certain conditions and recent scientific studies and experimental use have proven some of the medical benefits that cannabis can provide.

and can be anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-cancer cell growth, anti-vomiting, and neuroprotective.

Cannabis contains over 80 chemical compounds known as cannabinoids. Cannabinoids bind to different cell receptors in our brain and body and repress the release of certain neurotransmitters. Different cannabinoids have different effects, thus choosing a particular type of cannabis is like choosing a specific medicine based on one’s health needs. For example, the most well-known cannabinoid THC is responsible for the “high” associated with using marijuana but can also serve as a painkiller, appetite stimulant, nausea reducer, and suppressant of muscle spasms. Other cannabinoids do not have any psychoactive effects

After receiving her first small dose of cannabis oil, Charlotte stopped having seizures for a whole week. Today, Charlotte only has seizures two to three times a month when given her daily dose of high-CBD cannabis oil. Over 40 patients now use this strain of cannabis, named Charlotte’s Web, to help with diseases like cancer and epilepsy. This strain of cannabis has almost no THC or psychoactive qualities. Other families with similar health issues are moving to states where medical marijuana is legal so they can also try treating their children with cannabis oil. The non-profit organization that produces the cannabis strain Charlotte’s

One cannabinoid called CBD acts as a powerful painkiller without any psychoactive effects. Some patients such as eight-year-old Charlotte Figi also discovered CBD’s anti-seizure qualities through experimental usage. Charlotte was diagnosed with a rare disease known as Dravet Syndrome that causes a severe form of epilepsy. Charlotte was having 300 grand mal seizures a week in which she would lose consciousness, have violent muscle contractions, and sometimes stop breathing. After exhausting all other medical options and watching their daughter lose her ability to walk, talk, and eat, Charlotte’s parents decided to try giving her a high CBD strain of cannabis in oil form after hearing of a young boy’s success story in California.

Bigger Ain’t Always Better By Mel Damski When are we going to learn that bigger ain’t always better? And oftentimes, less is more! Unfortunately, I’ve had a front row seat from which I could view the decline of two of the great cities in the world. I left New York City in the early 70’s at a time of despair, when crime and drugs and poverty were taking a tremendous toll. It was a low point in that incredible city’s amazing history. Then came two great years in Colorado where I discovered mountains and elbow room and clean air, but my ambition to become a filmmaker led me to Los Angeles. LA to me is a prime example of a failing city but because I’ve been fortunate to have a 40 year career—and counting—as a director; I’ve always had to have a foothold there. Now that foothold has become a toehold and I’ve discovered the wonders of the Pacific Northwest. Why the rap on LA? Because for some reason the city fathers and mothers and brothers and sisters seem to think it’s essential that an already overcrowded, choking city needs to continue to grow. Recently I listened in astonishment as Larry Mantle, one of my favorite NPR hosts, discussed with his guests why Santa Monica needed to grow. The guests went on and on about how it was essential that the children and grandchildren of the families in that seaside city needed new affordable housing. Some callers mentioned that there was already terrible traffic into, out of and around Santa Monica but not one person mentioned one other tiny little factoid: THERE IS NO WATER! Yes, there is the Pacific Ocean, which is sight for sore eyes, but its water is not potable or drinkable, at least not without a tremendous investment in desalinization or sewage treatment.

Northwest. In California’s parched Central Valley, which is sometimes called America’s Salad Bowl, there are signs everywhere supporting the right of farmers to continue to use most of the state’s dwindling water supplies with the threat that food prices will rise dramatically. When I learned that it takes one gallon of water to produce one edible almond, I realized that we are going to have to change the way we eat because the cities aren’t going to let the farmers keep hoarding the water. There are lessons to be learned here, but I doubt that will happen.

“What

Bellingham doesn’t need is more infill and more traffic...”

The same is true of the whole Los Angeles Basin, and as you move inland from Santa Monica, there is another huge problem: even worse traffic and terrible air quality. Yet, growth continues willy-nilly, building permits are easily obtained, and more and more people are paying higher and higher prices to squeeze into this basin. And did I forget to mention: THERE IS NO WATER! Estimates are that there is a year’s supply of agua in the city’s aquifers and then everyone

see coming: the bursting of the California real estate bubble. Maybe those smarty pants are working on a Rainfall App! Right now, you can buy the same house in awesome Portland, Oregon for about one-quarter the price of a similar house in LA. No kidding.

One of my sons is moving there along with several of his boyhood friends. They’ve been priced out of LA and they see Portland as having a lot of the excitement and “chill” factor of LA without the smog and traffic. Of course, they’ve been warned about the wet and gloomy winters of the Pacific Northwest, especially for people who grew up in California sunshine. But they are also betting that abundant water will be a plus and not a minus in the years to come. And they won’t be slaves to their mortgages and they can even afford to get out is doing a collective rain dance of Dodge occasionally to find and hoping for an El Niño this some sunshine someplace. winter that will magically undo a 5 year drought. Recently I drove from my home in Bellingham, Washington, This pattern is happening near the Canadian border, throughout California, which through Central Washington, had its largest population gain to Portland, San Francisco, and in 12 years and now claims 38 on to Los Angeles. What I saw million residents, far more than in Washington and Oregon all of vast Canada. Leading the were bounteous rivers and way is the tech sector, which has streams. As soon as I crossed made San Francisco the most into California, I was struck by expensive city in America and how little water there was in the Santa Monica pretty pricey as Mt. Shasta Basin and how truly well. It puzzles me that these brown and parched everything tech wizards don’t see what I was compared to the Evergreen

This week, an official in my hometown decried the fact that Bellingham wasn’t growing fast enough. His point was that there wasn’t any room for new housing in Bellingham, and the new generation of homeowners wouldn’t be able to live within the city limits. So what! They can live in the county outside city limits or in nearby Ferndale and Lynden and drive 15 minutes to visit Mom and Pop. Or Mom and Pop can downsize and move into exurbia and create more housing for the next generation to raise their kids and send them to Bellingham’s wonderful high schools. What Bellingham doesn’t need is more infill and more traffic, and if they don’t believe me, they need to take a road trip down the coast like the one I just took. As for those of you still living in the Golden (read BROWN) State, my advice is sell your house now, at the top of the market, and buy two houses to replace it, one in the Pacific Northwest and one wherever you want to getaway occasionally in the winter. And you’ll still have money left over. It’s a smart move and you should bet the ranch on it!

GoinG From Panic to Peace in a Heartbeat By Brian Steele

“As I put faith in his authority, my panic changed to peace as I mapped rocks in the hills of Lago Verde.”

The Patagonian Andes In 1990 I went to Chile’s southern Patagonian Andes for geologic research for my Master’s degree. I was studying an area on the Chile/Argentina border near the village of Lago Verde. But after only a few days of research my entire trip (and graduate program) nearly blew up in my face. I panicked like never before. In my effort to map rocks in Chile I stupidly crossed the border into Argentina. I was not aware of the international hostility between the two countries but was about to find out. The next day, two heavily armed military police knocked on my door. They demanded that I show proof of permission from the Chilean government to work there. And if not, they would kick me out. All of my research, funding, and investment from

my WWU professor was in jeopardy. Worse yet, I might be detained. Panic flooded every nook and cranny of my mind. I made some desperate phone calls to academic associates in Santiago. Fortunately, the father-in-law of a Chilean geology professor was the Minister of Defense for the whole country! He made one phone call to Lago Verde and the next day the same military police came back. They were very apologetic for bothering me. They even offered assistance during my stay. In a heartbeat I went from panic to peace. Because I had a friend in a high place. My work was secure. I could walk with confidence and assurance because I had the backing of one of the most powerful officials in the country. I never saw him, but had trust that his

The Owner’s Manual for Life By Eric When we were born, our bodies didn’t come with an owner’s manual that gave us instructions on how to operate this new vehicle. What should you eat, how much should you exercise, and when is the best time to sleep? These are all questions that some of us may be thinking about if we want to recover from poor health, or if we are striving for optimal health. So where do we find the answers? Sure, there are plenty of books on the market today explaining how to live, but who do we believe? For example, in the food communities we hear advice coming from the Vegan, Vegetarian, Paleo, Raw Food, and Weston Price advocates. In addition, our governments, corporations, and researchers also have advice to give. I believe that there is some truth coming from each of them, but making sense of it all can still be a challenge. Butter was good, then it was bad, and now it is good again, depending on where it’s from, and whom you’re talking to. I like to learn from diverse sources, but to avoid getting lost I rely on my compass to steer through the confusion. My compass is called Ayurveda; it comes to us from India and is one of the oldest systems of medicine known to humans that is still practiced today.

The Daily Regimen In Ayurveda the term Dinacarya refers to the daily regimen. I find it fascinating to know that a daily regimen exists for the sole purpose of avoiding disease, and that the influences of money, ego, confusion, or other forms of interference did not contaminate this traditional source of knowledge. So if you are asking the question of how best to live for optimal health then let’s begin with a very brief introduction to Dinacarya. The following list is from sunrise to sundown.

TIME The Dinacarya appears to be very time consuming doesn’t it? To be honest, I am definitely not completing a full daily regimen every morning. However, I include as many practices into my day as possible, and some days are better than other. For example, on days when I don’t work it is possible to complete much more of the regimen. Before you dismiss the daily regimen as being impractical in this busy modern world, think of it as a goal you strive for, but recognize that you may never fully reach. Perhaps you can’t do a full body oil self massage every day, but once per week is more reasonable.

scraping the tongue, brushing the teeth, filling the mouth with oil, gargling, using herbal rinses for the eyes, nasya and neti pot for the nose.

Ayurveda and can’t possibly be summarized here, but every factor related to eating is considered. Eating two meals per day is recommended.

Breathe: Deep-breathing exercises known as Pranayama. Therapeutic smoking: not smoking how we imagine; rather medicinal herbs are used in small doses. Vaporizers could provide a healthier alternative.

Duties: Finally, you can begin the duties of your day, while practicing the mindfulness attained during meditation of course. Naps should be avoided. Sex: Before bed is the best time.

Exercise: People may be Sleep: between 7 and 11pm is surprised to learn that you best, try to be consistent. should only perform to one half of your strength. At least now you know what a healthy routine truly looks like, and how different it is from what our society defines as healthy. For example we often confuse professional athletes with healthy people, yet we now know that NFL players are often destroyed by mid life. Examining the Dinacarya is a great reminder of where our priorities are in life. If you don’t have time to dedicate to your health then ask yourself why not? To the young readers, now is a great time to think about what you want your life to look like before you make any major commitments. And to the busy single mothers who have already made their commitments, it only takes 15 seconds to scrape your tongue clean in the morning! The Kitchen Muse Green Beans with Korean Vinaigrette By Sarah Murphy-Kangas

Sarah is a Bellingham local and happens to have a wonderful food blog - In Praise of Leftovers. Her insights in the kitchen are sure to inspire you. “Snootiness seems to be rampant in the food world and I hope you don’t encounter that here. For me, the kitchen is more about being together than about making the perfect meal. It’s also about making do–seeing what’s around, rescuing ailing vegetables from the brink, taking advantage of simple things like dried beans or grains. And nothing makes me happier than finding a way to use all the random bits in my fridge.” Happy Scrounging! Sarah Murphy-Kangas

Step 1:

Parboil some very fresh green beans (thank you, Sage and Sky, for growing ours!). Do this by bringing a lot of salted water to a boil, dropping your cleaned and trimmed green beans in, bringing back up to a boil, and setting the timer for 3 minutes. Dump them into a colander and run cold water over them to stop the cooking.

Step 2:

Make your vinaigrette by combining... 1 minced garlic clove 1 Tb. of Korean chile paste 1 Tb. sesame oil 2 Tb. vegetable oil 1 Tb. honey 1 Tb. toasted sesame seeds a bit of crumbled seaweed, 1 Tb. rice vinegar salt and pepper to taste

Orthodox vs. Roman 1000 Years and Still Going Strong! By Jair Furnase say, “Of course there are, one is on Sunset Drive and the other one is on Cornwall Avenue,” what I mean is that one is Roman and the other is Orthodox. Originally, they were one church; the disagreements that caused the split and the attempted reconciliations between the two were very influential on Europe during the Middle Ages. The seat of the Roman Empire moved from Rome to Constantinople in the 5th century A.D. and so the influence of the church in Constantinople would increase. The growing military conflicts between the Islamic East and the Christian West also began to increase the importance of Constantinople as it was the geographic center of the region and the main trade route from East to West. Think of it as Stepping thru the doors of Seattle during the Alaskan Gold St. Sophia’s every year also Rush. reminds me that there are two Catholic churches. Before you While both churches had their Late summer in Bellingham reminds me to plan for Greek Fest at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church. By “plan” I mean preparing one’s appetite for the onslaught of baklava, loukoumathes, dolmathes and (insert the name of your favorite Greek treat). Whether you’ve never been to the festival or just haven’t been for a while it’s an experience that shouldn’t be missed.

disagreements prior to 1054 (e.g. the use of unleavened bread in the Eucharist, the Roman churches insistence on celibacy among priests and that only bishops could perform confirmations), the Roman church did not consult with the Eastern churches before a major change in theology called, The Filioque Clause, broke the already strained relationship. In 1054 the Patriarch of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius, excommunicated the bishops of Constantinople and closed their churches since they followed some of the traditions of the Western church. The Pope in Rome, Leo IX, responded by having a papal decree delivered to Constantinople excommunicating Cerularius. I like to think of this as the Middle Age version of “You can’t fire me, I quit!”

Step 3:

Toss with cooled green beans and sprinkle some more sesame seeds on top.

There were several attempts at reconciliation in late 1200’s and then again the mid 1400’s. They were unsuccessful, mainly because the overtures from the West to the East were on the West’s terms only. Come back to me on my terms only... I’ve tried that. It doesn’t work. The First Crusade in 1096 didn’t do much to improve the chances of a reunification. The army that was sent from the West (at the request of the Byzantine Emperor whose territory was under attack by the Turks) pillaged Constantinople before moving on to the Middle East, conquering territory there and then refused to hand the reconquered territory back over to Constantinople. In recent years, leaders from both churches have reached across the divide between the two. Pope John Paul II visited an Eastern Orthodox country (Romania) in 1999. He was the first Pope to do so since the Great Schism. And in 1995, Patriarch Bartholomew I (the Patriarch of Constantinople) visited the Vatican for the first time.

These actions are viewed by many historians as the final act in a series of differences that had slowly pushed both churches apart beyond hope of reconciliation. It is worthy to note that both churches agreed to mutually nullify these excommunications... in 1965. Baby steps, right? Yes, it only took 911 years to make that happen.

It’s All About Energy, Vibration and Frequency! By Jeni Miller

“I AM” declarations are a very potent tool for personal transformation. “Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics.” -Albert Einstein Everything is energy and has vibration. Vibrations are life, light and sound. Science has shown that under a highpowered microscope you can see through a piece of wood, and the subatomic particles and the spaces between them vibrate. Your thoughts, words, and emotions are energy too and they impact your health, wellbeing and life. There are two frequencies on this planet: love and fear. Thoughts, words and emotions that fall on the love side of the vibrational spectrum, like gratitude and abundance, are expansive and those on the fear side contract the body, mind and spirit. Dr. Masaru Emoto’s work with water crystals demonstrated the power of sound on the structure of water molecules. He found water exposed to love based words created beautiful crystal formations and those exposed to fear based sounds were distorted and misshapen. This is especially important and interesting since the human body is 70-80% water. What do

regularly strengthens your Divine nature, as well as (re) programs your subconscious mind and water molecules. Additionally, • use of “I AM” declarations flushes out limiting thoughts, patterns and emotions stored within your cellular structure and from your subtle anatomy (auric field, chakras, and meridians).

Abundance is our birthright and just like everything else, it is energy and has a frequency. Would you like to experience more abundance in your life? If so, find ways to keep your vibration on the love based side of the frequency spectrum. Here you say or tell yourself? What are a few things I do and suggest vibration are you creating in to my clients to stay in resonance with the vibration of abundance • your body and mind? and to feel expansive in mind, Sound can be used to create body and spirit: changes in vibratory frequencies. Dr. Masaru Emoto’s water crystals “I AM” declarations are a • very potent tool for personal transformation. Beginning a statement with, “I AM” invokes Divine energy and is a powerful way to shape your reality. “I AM” decrees align you with the Divine qualities you already are (like ABUNDANCE), but may have forgotten. They communicate to your being the Truth of who you are. Using “I AM” statements

Speak aloud an intention in the morning that uses the power of the “I AM” statement and sound. I use: “Today, I am more abundant than ever before!” Throughout the day make note of all the ways you experience abundance and at night review them before you drift off to sleep or keep a journal. By acknowledging them you begin to view the reality of your world through the lens of abundance and (re) wire your subconscious mind to create evidence of that intention. Make up fun and creative ways to experience and acknowledge abundance. I play a game when I’m driving my car, riding my bike or walking in the community. I have selected certain models of cars that represent prosperity to me. Every time I see one of them, I use that moment as an opportunity to say (sing or shout) one of my abundance decrees. My commute time is always very entertaining, especially when those particular car models are in front, beside, behind and coming toward me.

Create and use “I AM” statements. Two of my Jeni Miller is a Medical Support Clinical Hypnotherapist and favorite statements are: “I childbirth hypnosis educator. Creating a Joyful Life Befriending the Shadows Within By Kerri Burnside

In 2013 I sustained an injury on the job, resulting in chronic pain and a permanent disability. The blessing in the situation was that it was the catalyst for creating this publication. As the months and then years went on I did my best to remain positive and focus on healing, however the chronic pain had become my constant companion and began to wear me down. I have been teaching stress management and reduction for over 15 years and write the column Creating a Joyful Life, so when I found myself in the midst of depression, I was really disappointed with myself. Surprisingly, (sarcasm) this judgement and self-criticism did nothing to lift the fog of my despair and only made that vague dense feeling worse. I found myself in a dark place struggling to get out. Struggling to find the light again. I halfheartedly forced myself to go through the motions of what once had brought great joy into my life. As the weeks then months passed without any relief, I stopped doing those because it only triggered failure.

if I had a friend that spoke to me the way that I spoke to myself, would I keep her as a friend? I saw a video on YouTube where the person wrote a “Dear John letter” to their ego. I loved it and thought, “I am going to break up with my ego.” It worked for a little while, but...anyone who has experienced a break up or loss at some point in their life knows that you go through the anger phase during grieving. Well, my ego was angry with me and try as I might, I couldn’t just break up with my ego. I just oscillated back and forth from being really angry with myself and falling deeper into depression. I heard myself telling a friend, “I am so tired of being tired.” It was exhausting going back and forth between beating myself up and

I laughed at how funny my statement sounded, but later I decided to let the exhaustion take over and stopped struggling. I let those waves of emotion crash over and through me. They were not as frightening as they looked from the distance nor did they consume me. I stopped trying to “break up” with my ego and instead, I decided to show my ego how I wanted to be treated. When will you face it? What will be possible when you do?

Boredom, fussy, moody; I’m not exactly sure. For many people, being down in the dumps is just a matter of feeling blue; for others it’s a bit more serious and they call it depression. One must of course take into consideration the constitution of the animal and any current imbalances, but this is truly the starting point for optimal health. And while some may find it humorous if not a bit ‘kooky’, I also highly believe in the intention we set when feeding our animals (as well as ourselves). Energy is energy. So each day as I prepare the meals for my furry kids, they hear me sing, “Om Shree Dhanvantre Namaha, Om Shree Dhanvantre Namaha.” (This translates into: Salutations to the being and power of the celestial healer.) When Bo hears me singing this, he knows it’s mealtime. And I feel that I have infused his food with love and healing intentions. aid in restoring balance. Lavender is often recommended in emotional cases such as anxiety or aggression. When transporting Bianco Nove, my 8 year old deaf kitty to the vet, I place a cotton ball with a drop or two of lavender in his carrier and the difference in his state of ease is undeniable. This could also be done for pets with separation anxiety or for general fear symptoms. The proper essential oil for physical ailments such as arthritis, digestive disorders, allergies and more can be a very key addition to the healing and well-being of your animal. For an in-depth look at the use of essential oils on your pet, I would recommend the book The Animal Desk Reference by Dr. Melissa Shelton.

The Power of the Eclipse By Christine Sessler

Lunar Eclipse

Partial Solar Eclipse

A partial Solar Eclipse, which to make any major decisions two It is recommended not to enter of enjoying every moment and will only be visible in South Africa and Antarctica, will occur on September 12th at 11:52 pm PST. The full Lunar Eclipse will be visible in the Pacific Northwest on September 27th and will begin at 7:11 p.m. The Maximum Eclipse will be at 7:47 p.m. and will end at 9:27 p.m. This Eclipse is very significant because it is taking place in Pisces in the Nakshatra of Uttarabhadrapada. This Nakshatra is the “Dragon of the Deep” and it will be in Pisces with Ketu the south node of the moon and a retrograde Uranus (Sidereal). This eclipse reveals the deepest parts of our personal shadows which, when viewed head on, is our greatest opportunity for enlightenment. The Dragon of the Deep represents the contained fire and passion within. It is the part of us that is disciplined and controlled. It favors exploration of the depth of science, wisdom and the psychological recesses of our soul. And then....Uranus is there....in retrograde. Oh my! If you would like to ignite a transformation within, this is the day to do it! A time of deep contemplation and reflection, along with a desire to release the old and welcome the new is at hand. Math Games Question: Three guests check into a hotel room. The clerk says the bill is $30, so each guest pays $10. Later the clerk realizes the bill should only be $25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop $5 to return to the guests. On the way to the room, the bellhop realizes that he cannot divide the money equally. As the guests didn’t know the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest $1 and keep $2 for himself. Each guest got $1 back: so now each guest only paid $9; bringing the total paid to $27. The bellhop has $2. And $27 + $2 = $29 so, if the guests originally handed over $30, what happened to the remaining $1?
