The Benefits of Community

We all think of different things when we hear the word “community,” which is fair since it can be applied in so many ways. When I think of community, I automatically go to the reigning SuperBowl Champions, the Seattle Seahawks and 12th man first! The Seahawks give credit to their success on the field to the community that supports them and if you’ve ever been to a Seahawks game you understand that sense of community. You find yourself talking to

“Community is a sign that love is possible in a materialistic world where people so often either ignore or fight each other. Humans are social animals, requiring interaction with others to be our best and it is a natural instinct to contribute back to our identified group. Bellingham Muse are looking up Things Bellinghamsters! As I am writing, it is mid February and almost 50 degrees outside. I am anxious to begin clearing out my garden beds until dark, finish outdoor projects that have sat dormant all winter and take an evening jog as the daylight hours increase. Most of all, I am looking forward to seeing the springtime blooms ready to emerge from the sleepy earth, and brightening the deciduous trees with color again. In order to become fully available to the bounty that awaits us in the springtime, we must first remove or enliven what has lain dormant during the winter. Our bodies will naturally want to cleanse and purify. Two springtime herbs that will prepare you for this time of inner “spring cleaning” and enlivening are Nettles and Dandelion. The first of my favorite plants to make its appearance in the Northwest forests is Nettles or Urtica dioica. If you have lived in the NW, you’ve more than likely been introduced to this plant. It is one of the most medicinally useful and nutritious

plants native to this area. Nettles have different properties when collected at different stages of growth. They should be harvested in early spring before going to seed. Preferably collect just the top few inches of the plant and only gather in locations where it is in great abundance. Fresh leaves can be eaten raw, cooked or they can be dried and made into cold or hot tea. An overnight infusion with cold water will

extract minerals and water soluble vitamins, making a highly nutritious beverage. Nettles are naturally high in Calcium, Chromium, Magnesium, Manganese, Zinc, Potassium, Selenium, and Phosphorus. They contain vitamin C, vitamin A and some B vitamins. Naturally antiinflammatory, an anti-histamine and a purifying diuretic, nettles are very effective blood cleansers and improve the efficiency of both

The Ascended Masters And Archangels A Resource To Remember By Jacquie Fruttero The Ascended Masters and Archangels are Higher Beings of Light that make themselves available to everyone. They are a community of teachers from various backgrounds who have come together to be of service to the planet, the animals, and the people. They are always present and waiting for us to remember to call on them for support, guidance, clarity, healing, and much more. However, we have become so busy in our day to day life that we forget to reach out and connect with this supportive community. Jesus Christ, Mother Mary, Djwhal Khul, Buddha, St. Germaine, Master Kuthumi, Master El Morya, Kuan Yin, Archangel Michael, Archangel Raphael and others are available and only a request away. Whomever you choose to connect with, that Higher Being of Light is wanting to create a relationship with you. They want to help you be the best that you can be. You can begin to connect with them through meditation, prayer, and the use of spiritual tools and practices. I recommend that you check in to see which Higher Being of Light resonates with you and begin connecting with them first. The Ascended Masters and Archangels have different areas of expertise. Mother Mary and Kuan Yin can help you heal matters of the heart and work with your inner children. Buddha and Christ can help you with your growth process and spiritual awakening. Djwhal Khul performs psychic surgery on animals and individuals.

Archangel Michael is great to call on for protection and clearing of any negative energies. Archangel Raphael can heal and clear emotional toxicity from people, animals, and places with his green flame. Master Kuthumi can assist you in searching the root source lifetime in your Akashic Records for something that occurred so you can heal the past, in present time. Master El Morya can help you work on big projects world-wide.

"The Ascended Masters and Archangels are Higher Beings of Light that make themselves available to everyone." Who do you choose to connect with first? I chose Master Djwhal Khul and Archangel Michael when I first started my healing journey 5 years ago. Djwhal is my healing guide. I call on him throughout the day to help me heal, clear, and release whatever gets triggered in me. I also work with him to align with my intentions for what I want to create and manifest in my life. I work with Archangel Michael to build and maintain my sacred space and grounding on a daily basis. During the time I have been working with them, I have created a strong relationship with all of the Ascended Masters and Archangels. I call on them for each healing session I perform on animals and individuals. They bring in their light, love, support, and healing energy to align with the client’s commitment for healing and growth.

During a healing session, individuals usually experience the presence of the Ascended Masters and Archangels. They typically feel warmth, pulsing, tingling, waves of energy, old emotions coming up to be released, and sometimes a slight bit of pain when something is changing or healing from the physical body. Additionally, if the individual is interested, I teach them spiritual tools and practices which allow them to facilitate things like self healing, connecting with their Higher Self, learning how to use their soul’s energy to manifest and create their life, creating and maintaining a sacred space, psychic protection, and much more. I also encourage each person to connect with their own healing guide and begin building a relationship with them. Many of my clients are enjoying their new found spiritual support team. Are you ready to meet and work with your spiritual support team? We are spiritual beings having a human experience, but it doesn’t hurt to have a community of Higher Beings of Light in our corner! Reach out today, they are waiting to hear from YOU!

Over time he learns about himself and the world. His understanding and senses of the world grow. How could he believe the way he did? He must stay and learn how to overcome base instinct and to trust what instincts tell him. He grows to understand that he is loved even if he cannot see those that look, watch and help him. He understands that his goal isn’t just a path he must walk but a journey that must be experienced and lived. The Fool stays with the High Priestess and learns.

had to say about using food as medicine, and I hope that the information has been helpful and educational for you. This edition of the Muse is focused upon community, and it comes at a perfect time, because in the doldrums of winter we need to be reminded to extract ourselves from our comfortable hibernation and seek out community. To inter-relate the topic of community and nutrition is of great interest to me. I remember when the discussion first began on the French diet. When dissecting their nutrient intake composed of rich sauces, breads, fatty meats, and the coinciding habits of wine and cigarettes, it would seem that they would score very low on an index of overall health. Thus the reason that it is referred to as the French Paradox. The French Paradox began as a study to find out how the French could consume a diet high in saturated fats and still have significantly lower coronary heart disease (CHD) risks. It has branched out from the possible benefits (or at least nonexisting negative side effects of the saturated fats), to the beneficial intake of red wine and it's contents of resveratrol and polyphenols which have antioxidant effects on CHD, to finally the fact that the French consume less processed foods and the overall health benefits of that. Buried in that literature, there is small mention of something that in my mind stands out as a major factor, and that is community and the pleasure that exists from sharing meals with community. I came

upon a term recently that caused one of those fist pumping, "YES!" moments. The term is social capital, and to my surprise the term is not new. Psychologists have been using it for many years when looking at the influencing factors on mental health and well being. In my own words, I will define it for you with this equation: SOCIAL NETWORKS + SOCIAL PARTICIPATION + TRUST + RECIPROCITY = SOCIAL CAPITAL Social capital influences overall health by way of reduced stress, happiness and pleasure. Think back to Alana Simler's article (What's Your Deal) on stress and its effects on health. Now let's take this concept and expand out to social capital in the realm of how we nourish ourselves. I think back to when I was a kid growing up in rural Colorado in the 70's and 80's. We lived on a small farm, and although we did not grow all of our food by any means, we had a large garden that lasted from late spring to early fall, and my mom would can and freeze the produce to last us during the winter. It took family involvement to keep and harvest the garden, to feed and care for the animals, collect the eggs, and periodically butcher chickens. I remember sitting at the table

Creating a Joyful Life The Chakra System Disconnecting from Groupthink (Part 1 of 7) By Kerri Burnside, CHT

The Seven Main Chakras

“Seek not to change the world, but choose to change your mind about the world"–ACIM What started me on my path to creating a joyful life was the realization that even though I had a good career, a beautiful home and great friends and family, I was unhappy. I could move, change careers, volunteer or get involved in causes, but nothing really changed. My stress load was high and no matter what I did or where I went, that pit of unhappiness followed me. I remember reading the quote "there is no way to happiness, happiness is the way" -Buddha. It really resonated with me. It was so simple, I could just BE happy. This only frustrated me because if I knew how to be happy, I would. Through pondering Buddha’s advice, I found that I was really out of touch with my feelings and my body. I had become adept at stuffing my emotions and ignoring the physical manifestations of stress. A breakthrough that I encountered was when I began learning about the chakras. Working with them gave me a

Page 8

www.bellinghammuse.com process for changing myself and how I viewed and interacted with the world. As I changed, my circumstances changed. Instead of seeking a path to happiness, I was happy. What are the Chakras? Chakra is a Sanskrit word which means “wheel of light." There are seven main chakras and I like to think of them as the seven stages of growth. They lie along the nave of the spine and are the storehouse of your beliefs, emotions and experiences. Each chakra has its own purpose, specific associations and connection to the body and its systems. In this edition I will introduce the root or 1st Chakra (Muladhara), located near the base of the spine. If you think of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, at the bottom of the pyramid is all of our basic survival needs (food, shelter, security, money etc). In the chakra system this is the 1st or “root” chakra. If these needs are not being met, your fight-or-flight response from the autonomic nervous system is engaged and being happy is secondary to surviving.

creating fear, dependency, anger and a high level of stress. It is the root area for addictions (emotional, physical or behavioral). A victim mentality can be present when this chakra is out of balance.

How can one restore balance to the 1st chakra? Blockages here can be a bit of a challenge to uncover because they are usually unconscious habits and beliefs. They are the ones programmed by our own "group." Our "group" is the community that we come from and belong to: our family, friends, religion, neighbors, political party, etc. and provides all beliefs about how the world should and should Maslow's Hierachy of Needs not work. Mental Illnesses are Curable Just Not With Synthetic Drugs By Linda Van Zandt Psychotropic drugs don’t cure anyone. That’s because they were never designed to cure anyone: they were designed to bring in the highest profits. It all adds up to what has to be America’s ugliest secret: most mental illnesses are curable and have been for the last 60 years. When my son, “Bob,” became psychotic, it turned into a six-year-long nightmare as we dealt with ambulances and ERs, not to mention all the psychiatrists, social workers, police, lawyers, and judges. We had to commit Bob twice to psychiatric hospitals. The first time was for ten nights. By the way, the bill was $25,000. The second commitment was for six weeks, followed by several months of court-ordered psychiatrist visits and three daily antipsychotic drugs, each costing about $600 per month, as well as lab tests to measure how much damage these drugs were doing to his liver. I was told that Bob’s illness was incurable and that he would be on DSHS assistance for the rest of his life. He would be just one more out of millions of mentally ill DSHS clients, all paid for by you, the taxpayers, to the tune of about $2 million each. “Everybody knows” mental illness is incurable, right? I did my own research and found that we, our whole country, could not be more wrong.

Since the 1950s, scientists who don’t work for drug companies have learned how to cure mental illnesses with a safe, sensible treatment called “Orthomolecular Medicine.” No, this isn’t some expensive, patented product you’re supposed to buy. In fact, there’s nothing proprietary about it. It’s an approach, a way of looking at mental illnesses for what they really are: physical problems which are expressed in psychiatric symptoms. Physical problems can be treated with real medical care. Orthomolecular treatment is real medical care. Bellingham Muse chatting with my parents and/or siblings while snapping beans, learning the parts of the chicken as my dad took it apart as if it were science class. Most of all I remember that it was simply routine that we helped with dinner prep and clean up, and that rarely was there a family member missing from the table. We had conversation, shared our day, ate hearty meals, yet none of us was overweight. The same was true for my peers and their families. So, in my youth, a lot of my social capital grew from family. However, as an adult and a mom in today's world of children's sports and activity schedules, our family has to work hard to hold tightly to the family dinner. We do because it is tradition, we slow down, we listen, we eat good, home cooked food, and we leave the table truly nourished.

Community As Medicine By Cherrelyn Seegers, D.C. Continued from page 7 How about harnessing the power of your community? The power doesn't have to come by way of large numbers. Start with a few friends and perhaps have each friend invite someone whom is unknown by the group, perhaps someone who you know dines alone. This can be a simple potluck type of dinner, taking into account each other's dietary restrictions, or you can put a little more planning and intention into it and have a planned topic of discussion for the meal. Each person might throw an idea of discussion into a hat at the first meal, and everyone draws a subject and prepares questions or fun facts on the subject. There can be themes to the meals, an exchange of recipes,as well as making a double batch of your item and everyone bringing a container to take home another serving of the meal for the next day. Be as creative as you want!

But what about those who live alone, far from family, or whose children are grown and gone? Community nourishment maybe hard to come by. Rather than sharing a recipe this edition, I was inspired to share the idea of a Raclette dinner party. My son's girlfriend introduced us to this type of dinner just before Christmas. Reminiscent of fondue dinners, we sat around the tabletop Raclette for a couple hours personally grilling and melting all the yummy options to our liking while sipping on wine and enjoying great conversation.

A Raclette Dinner Party

Page 10 NOW BEWARE: It is easy to read this and say, "I don't have time" or "Someone else will take this on," but remember that social participation means shared effort, means less stress, increased well being and rich social capitol. So, let's say yes to the healing power of community! By Cherrelyn Seegers, D.C. Cherrelyn Seegers is a Doctor of Chiropractic, practicing in Bellingham, Wa. She practices 360 degree health care, meaning partially physical medicine, and partially functional medicine with integrated nutrition. Although Dr. Seegers has been a life long athlete, she understands the challenge of both musculoskeletal and physiological health challenges from first hand experience. She has practiced in Bellingham for 17 years after graduating from Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon. Originally from Switzerland, it involves a cheese wheel placed fireside. As it melts a knife is used to scrape off the melted portion onto a plate prepared with small boiled potatoes, meats, and various vegetables. Tabletop Raclette grills are now available to use instead of the fireside method, making it very convenient for today's world.

Suggestions for enjoying a Raclette evening: Raclette - I found mine on Amazon Cheese - Raclette, swiss, muenster, or any other good melting cheeses of your choice. Traditionally Raclette cheese is used, although can be hard to find locally. I found some at Trader Joe's. Potatoes - small round or fingerling potatoes boiled Vegetables - onions, peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, etc. Sliced fairly thin for quicker grilling Meats - slices of cured meat (pancetta, prosciutto, ham, etc) You could also use other meats sliced thinly in order to cook thoroughly Gherkins (cornichons) - small savory pickles You can truly be creative with your selections. Set out trays/bowls of all your options and let your guests create their own magical plate. By Alana Simler, LMP

Have You Heard... Planet Money By Joel Simler

Muse Tip - The following is a podcast review/suggestion. For more information on what a podcast is or how to access them, go to our website www.bellinghammuse.com and select the 'Have you Heard' link under the 'Inspiring Articles' tab. Typically I have around 20 podcast shows lined up to listen to. A handful I wait tirelessly for new episodes, and plan to write about in future issues. Another handful I have are random picks from the market place or recommendations that I will eventually get around to. Then there’s the bulk of my playlist which I use as a means to pass the time at work, or cleaning, or any other moment that I need random company. This group doesn’t usually strike me as material to write about. But, from that bulk we see sitting, Planet Money. It was assuredly not my intention to write about Planet Money, I had actually started writing a completely different article which has now been moved to a later issue. I found it evident that I needed to switch over when listening one day at work. Planet Money does more than give you a dry straight forward look at numbers and business; it is instead a captivating and entertaining look at different sections of communities and cultures around the planet, through the eyes of an economist. What instigated the birth of Planet Money was the desire to enlighten people about the “…big complex global economic issues, the kinds of things that people think they should know a lot about and understand, but, they don’t, and they get really confused…” as stated by David Adamson in the premiere episode from September 2008. The series began with a desire to enlighten people on the global financial crisis of the time, which involved Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Years later, the podcast still seeks to inform people on how the economy works, but also goes on to describe a vast multitude of economic practices around the world and how people of the communities are affected by it.

My recommendation for where to start your listening experience is the episode that convinced me to write this article, Episode 512 “Can Mezcal Save A Village?”. What drew me to this episode was the tequila… OK, OK, there is definitely more to this episode than that, but tequila (specifically mezcal) certainly is a big attractor.

Page 11 immediately follows the Mezcal episode. Episode 513 shows people that economics is not just about money/goods/services, but can transcend all of that and be transposed to help real people’s average life questions. Planet Money invites Tim Harford on the show to answer callers questions about dating, sex and love. It’s a very entertaining episode, and I think you should give it a try! Two reasons I love this podcast, first because of the length. The average episode is 25 minutes, which is an ideal length for a drive home, or a lunch break, or walk/bike/run. The second reason is that it pumps out a whopping two episodes a week! Planet Money is a production of National Public Radio, and part of the reason it got started was because of the podcast This American Life, which I also recommend.

There is so much variety on Planet Money, This episode deals with an area in the that surely there is an episode for everyone mountains of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico, out there. The story that follows is one of great struggles and great accomplishments, and a story that is ongoing. I highly recommend giving it a listen, as it highlights how a small community can so hugely be affected by consumers in other parts of the world. Next I recommend a fun episode entitled Episode 513 “Dear Economist, I Need a Date?” Planet Money is a versatile podcast, which is one reason it’s a good one to check in on and listen to. If one episode of Planet Money doesn’t do it for you, then just wait a few days for the next one. You will get something completely different, as demonstrated by this episode which

Mental Illnesses are Curable Just Not With Synthetic Drugs By Linda Van Zandt Continued from page 9

"As your body slowly returns to homeostasis (normalcy) the psychiatric symptoms fade away."

discovered how to naturally restore them to their rightful level using nutritional medicine, or “nutraceuticals.” These are natural substances the body recognizes and knows how to use. Carl Pfeiffer, MD, in New Jersey, cured thousands of his mental patients by addressing their histamine imbalances. According to orthomolecular experts, an elevated histamine level causes depression and about 20% of all cases of schizophrenia, psychosis, and schizo-affective (or schizoid) disorder while low histamines are the biological cause of about 30% of these disorders. So, one’s natural histamine level is extremely important. How do you determine if your mental problems are due to histamines that are out of range? You ask your family doctor or naturopath to order a blood test. The last one I paid for was $41. The nutraceuticals used in treatment are commonly found at most any health food store. Since they’re natural, they cannot be patented. See what I mean about orthomolecular medicine not being proprietary? Other biological causes have been found, too. Orthomolecular Medicine is an integrative approach so psychotropic drugs are sometimes used. For example, if one doesn’t use orthomolecular treatment early enough and becomes psychotic, one may need to be stabilized with synthetic drugs. The difference is that the person isn’t left on those drugs forever. Orthomolecular treatment is begun while one is taking the drugs and in most cases, if the illness is caught

early enough, the person is slowly weaned off those drugs and onto solely orthomolecular treatment. A couple of warnings here, though: A) if someone is in danger to himself or others he must, by state law, take psychotropic drugs; and B) the histamines must be measured appropriately, for example, not with nanomols. Let’s begin right here in Bellingham to help people truly recover from their depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, ADHD, and all the other labels thrown at them so that we can have a healthier community—and avoid our own massacre by a mentally ill gunman. DSHS also needs to get on board and provide appropriate mental health care. The earlier one is treated, the greater the odds of making a complete recovery. Not just Bellinghamsters, but all Americans and everyone else deserves to know the truth: mental illness is a solvable problem—just, as I said, not with patented, synthetic drugs. Is it in the Cards? By Sungoddess ashley

Wayne: I’m making a big move back to my hometown in May, and I want to know if it is a good thing to be moving back. I want to be with my family, who all live there, but I have been away for 20+ years. I am getting older and they are getting older. I want to spend some time with them and be closer, they are over 3,000 miles away. Am I making the right decision? Sungoddess Ashley: I pulled 3 cards from the Tarot of the New Vision deck to show you what moving closer to your family would look like and to answer your question if this would be a good decision for you or not. The Past: The Page of Cups. You had some sort of feeling that a change was needed and it all started with the cups signifying a desire you had. It also represents feeling and intuition. The expression that I’m hearing is “a fish out of water”, which is the reason, or motivation to move. This could signify being away from family and your desire to be back in your home environment. The Present: 6 of Wands. This card is showing your means of transportation. It indicates you and someone else that you are picking up as a travel companion. She is stepping in your vehicle for the journey. You have made all the plans and are ready to go. Near Future: Ace of Wands. This is saying, yes, absolutely this is something you should be doing. You are on the right course, you are on track and it is indicating that you are given the thumbs up to move forward in this direction. The wand is showing that it is ripe for creative potential and you can create the kind of future you want to have there. Also, you mentioned in your question that you were to be moving in May and this looks like a great time for you to travel. Wands signify fire, which represent the heat of the summer months, also, a dry, desert climate. The bottom card, or “shadow card” gives me a summary of the reading, or a supplemental message. I pulled The Star, which is about optimism, hope and following the way you are being guided, so it feels as though you have had a little bit of a universal nudge to move in that direction and you are just following your path. You have support and help from the universe in your decision. The stars are aligned and leading you forward in this direction. Do you have a question that you would like to receive some guidance on? Submit your question to Sungoddess Ashley on-line at http://www.bellinghammuse.com/contact -us/ Each edition, Ashley will select one submission to answer in her column.
