MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL FUNDERS

For many of our children and younger people, the Belfast Children’s Festival will represent their first real experience of professional arts. We all want that early experience to be the very best possible. Which is why we are so lucky to have, here in Northern Ireland, one of the world’s great children’s arts festivals. The acts have all been carefully handpicked to ensure that young audiences will come away inspired, delighted, and hopefully a little awed, by what they have seen.

The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, as the principal funder, is proud of our long association with Young at Art and the Belfast Children’s Festival. We support this organisation throughout the year as it delivers hundreds of creative events across the region, engaging thousands of young people and dozens of local schools in the arts. This festival alone attracts an annual audience of around 30,000. That’s an astonishing achievement!

Over the coming weeks of the festival, audiences will be treated to a flavour of Northern Ireland’s and the world’s leading artists and performers who create art especially for young people. The experience will be memorable. It will be fun. It will be entertaining. And it will mark the beginning of what we hope will be a life-long passion for the arts.

We’re delighted to be supporting the Belfast Children’s Festival once again this year.

Belfast’s vibrant festival scene is such an important part of our cultural identity and expression and Belfast Children’s Festival is a key event in the city’s cultural calendar, inspiring our next generation of creative talent.

As well as showcasing an array of local acts, I’m delighted that Belfast will be welcoming performances from across Europe and as far away as Nigeria. International artists and practitioners will also be taking part in the festival’s delegate programme over the first weekend.

A more inclusive and diverse Belfast enriches life for everyone – so I’m delighted to see that inclusivity is at the heart of this year’s festival – from celebrating diverse cultures to the special performances for young people with additional needs.

Belfast Children’s Festival harnesses creativity to bring people together and connect them with countries across the world – so we’re proud of our ongoing support for Belfast Children’s Festival. It’s great to see it flourish in terms of reach, innovation and positive impact year in, year out.

I hope you enjoy BCF25 and I’d like to wish everyone involved the very best of luck. With over 30,000 audience members last year, we look forward to seeing friends old and new in 2025.

Flammable pants: why we shouldn’t tell stories to children

Inaugural Lecture, Professor Tom Maguire

Professor Tom Maguire brings two of his longstanding research interests together: children’s arts and storytelling. He proposes that we are in the middle of a narrative boom where storytelling has moved from the domains of culture and literature to be harnessed in community activism, therapy; education; by business gurus and leaders, advertisers, politicians and activists; and to effect conflict transformation. Tom will critique the deployment of storytelling specifically to children. Instead of storytelling as a one-way process undertaken by adults to children, he proposes instead alternative models that support storymaking with children as a collaborative, critical and creative relationship in which children’s agency is acknowledged and supported.

This lecture is delivered in conjunction with the TYANI Showcase.
