It’s our Birthday. We’re having a party, and you are invited! The Belfast Children’s Festival turns 25 this year! That calls for a celebration, and this celebration is 10 days long!

25th anniversaries are often called ‘Silver’, so after the difficult last few years, and indeed the challenging times we are currently all finding ourselves in, we want to bring you the ‘silver lining’ to those clouds with the brightest, boldest and sunniest selection of theatre, dance, music, art and interactive events, including a massive range of free activities for all the family as part of our Big Belfast Birthday Bash.

As Young at Art celebrates the 25th birthday of its flagship festival, we can reflect on the fact that they will have been responsible for introducing thousands upon thousands of children in Northern Ireland to the wonders of the arts. We all know how influential our early experiences are on the people we will become, so it’s heartening to think that those who first visited the Belfast Children’s Festival back in the late 1990s may now be returning with their own children, who will embark on their own life’s journey, similarly enthused and enriched by the arts.

We’re excited to be supporting the Belfast Children’s Festival once again in this, their special milestone 25th anniversary year; and their first significant full international programme since 2020.

A cornerstone of our city’s cultural experience for children, we’re proud to have invested in and supported the Belfast Children’s Festival over the years, and to see it continue to grow in reach, innovation and impact.

Belfast really values its vibrant festival scene, which celebrates local talent, showcases the work of our emerging artists and, most importantly in the case of Belfast Children’s Festival, inspires our next generation of creative talent. The international element of this year’s programme from 3-12 March is far-reaching, connecting us through creativity to other countries across the globe and attracting visitors to Belfast from near and far.

Grensgeval (BEL)

Camiel tries to copy the painting of his hero Jackson Pollock. But how can he make the right blot on the right spot? Should he drip, throw, pour or splash the paint? Does he need to work with brushes or sticks or entire containers? He uses all of his body parts, but no matter how he turns, twists, jumps, or rolls: his painting does not resemble the original. PLOCK! is visual circussound theatre that appeals to all the senses. With buzzing cans, dancing paint, coloured sounds, and an acrobatic painter, this is a performance for everyone who likes to colour outside the lines every now and then.

Note: This is messy stuff! Audience members will be provided with protective overalls to wear.

This stunning visual treat is about discovery and overcoming the odds.

An honest, funny and heartfelt journey about the trials and tribulations of living with dyslexia and seeing things differently. Watch bodies and words fly like flocks of birds, a murmuration, a little murmur.

Cherrie knows they've finally come for her at the Club. The Narrow Minders - human machines with a loathing for art break into her dressing room to remove Cherrie from the imagination. She has no choice but to smash through the dressing room mirror to escape the grasp of fear and prejudice. Cherrie suddenly finds herself in a different Universe where she is faced with the ultimate choice - do we confront our fears and fight for what’s right? Or avoid them and diminish into the ether?

Based on the real-life experiences of Matt Cavan and his drag persona Cherrie Ontop, Mirrorball explores the immense potential of creativity when our worlds are turned upside down by life circumstances.

Northern Ireland Opera (NI)

An exciting and powerful new opera from NI Opera for young people created by acclaimed composer Neil Martin and award-winning playwright Fionnuala Kennedy (Removed). Created for and with teenagers and young adults, Nobody, Somebody focuses on the pertinent and pressing issues of housing stress and homelessness some young people are facing everyday.

Following its debut as a ‘work-indevelopment’ at BCF22, this exciting new opera commission will be performed with the Ulster Youth Orchestra and includes young people behind the scenes as part of the creative team, putting them in the driving seat to tell the story of their own lived experience.

light! is a performance in which the light is dancing. Tiny lights and big spots traverse the stage. The light dances in rounds and the performers follow suit. The audience discovers a world of nuances and light intensitythe gloom of a torch, the bright light of a larger spot, each radiating a different atmosphere.

The performance teases the senses and sparks the imagination and little ones get the chance to experiment with shadows and light at the end of the performance when they are invited to join the performers on stage.

Second Hand Dance (GB)

We Touch! We Play! We Dance! is a mesmerising, engaging and celebratory dance show. The four dancers weave around the space, inviting babies and children to join them in a warm hearted and playful performance. With music mixed live by a DJ, the dancers respond to the children, guiding them through a series of exchanges and encounters, with high fives, hugs and dancing.

This mesmerising, engaging and fun performance for children under 3yrs is a show filled with surprises and joys where you and your child can listen and watch, or let loose and join in, either way, you’ll have a wonderful time!

Inter-dimensional travellers, Dawn and Dusk, have been stuck in an empty void dimension for far too long. When Dusk devises a radical solution to their problem, they are hurled into our dimension which has catastrophic consequences for their onboard guide and best friend, PRISM.

Written by Gary Crossan and directed by Andrew Stanford, PRISM is an exciting and immersive theatre experience, designed with accessibility at its core. In each performance, physically disabled audience members (and their grown-ups) have access to the best seats in the house, and all performances are captioned and audio described. Our Boys is a piece of contemporary dance that reflects upon the choreographer's childhood experiences, including those of mental health and loss. Developed to be a shared live communal experience with audiences, this performance challenges the stereotypes young men struggle with, yet don't talk about.

Inspired by works such as DV8's Can We Talk About This? Our Boys hopes to inspire young people to abandon fear when discussing wellbeing in an attempt to destigmatise ‘opening up’.

Baby Rave: Rave in the Nave

The original, and the best. Back in its spiritual home, Belfast Cathedral, for BCF23, we can’t wait to get our groove on with ravers young and old(er) and boogie to the Baby Rave playlist, specially curated by Young at Art’s resident DJ, Kwame Daniels.

Baby Rave is a participatory dance event for children under 4 and their grownups, encouraging you and your baby to dance and explore rhythm and music together. Our DJ spins against a backdrop of dynamic video projections while you and your baby bounce with a team of dance leaders in an ambient ‘club’ environment decorated with funky lights and decorations, soft materials, parachutes and inflatables.

A brand-new festival event, Open Mic showcases the work of young artists (aged under 18) and offers them a safe space to perform. Open Mic was set up by the Oh Yeah Music Centre in response to feedback from young artists who couldn’t access traditional open mic nights in pubs and clubs due to their age.

Come and check out the next wave of young Northern Ireland talent as eight young local artists perform their original work in 15-minute slots on the Oh Yeah stage.

Volume Control

Oh Yeah Music Centre (NI)

Volume Control is a music event showcasing young new bands curated by a team of young promoters, as part of the music industry mentoring programme coordinated by Oh Yeah. The group of young people are mentored and receive training in the curation and delivery of all ages live music events by those working within the industry.

The bands who play Volume Control gigs are all chosen by the young people and are provided a safe space to perform and learn.

This will be the final show for this cohort before a new group are recruited so it's going to be quite the leaving party!

Cross Border Youth Choir (NI/ROI)

Seen & Heard is the culmination of a Cross Border Youth Choir project that began in 2022 with the intention of bringing young people together from across the island to create exceptional choral music. The choir membership is made up of young voices from Dublin Youth Choir, Belfast Philharmonic Youth Choir, Sperrin Kidz and Larne Choral Youth Choir.

New Exits: 10 Years of Painting

New Exits is a showcase of the painting that has emerged and flourished through the work of graduates of the BA and MFA Fine Art courses at Belfast School of Art since 2012 – the same year the MAC opened its doors. New Exits features work by artists including Juste Bernotaite, Hannah Casey Brogan and Megan Burns.

Point of View

Young at Art (NI)

Point of View is a very special visual arts project co-created with Young at Art artists Vasiliki Stansinaki and Ronan Smyth and three Belfast Primary Schools, in which young people develop their knowledge, understanding and appreciation of the fine arts.

Point of View is the physical culmination of this creative conversation, an exhibition of their work in which the young people will creatively reflect on and respond to their urban landscape, and express their own unique point of view.
