THE AWARE

On the inside sheet of the Echoes 1970 is a reproduction of a painting by Oscar Magnan S.J. To some this painting might cause a slight fear at first sight. This fe!I can be justified by its name, ''The Unaware.'' The painting represents the living vegetables called men who live their lives day by day not caring about their fellow men.

As a reaction to the meaning of this painting, the Echoes staff has chosen ''The Aware'' as the theme of this yearbook. "The Aware'' are those who try in their own way to improve their environment, the world where we live. We feel that "The Aware" truly represent$ Belen. Though small in Belen is making us aware of the problems we will soon face and it is instilling in us. the desire to try to overcome these difficulties.

Yes Belen makes us aware of the world both as human beings and Christians. It teaches us brotherhood and not to be indifferent. How pleasant this life will be if everyone was AWARE!

With deep appreciation for his helpful services, outstanding contributions and most of all for being AWARE, the yearbook staff sincerely dedicates the 1970 Echoes to our advisor F.rnesto Fernandez Tr avfeso S.J. Thank -you, -Ernie!

FACULTY

OUR RECTOR

Why is it that some things are more important to you than they are to someone else? You have a suit or a football, or a stuffed animal you had as a kid and it is all beat up and falling apart. But you do not: care. It is precious and you would not part with it for the world. It means something to you. Your sister or friend can not understand why you keep it around. Well, you just like it. That is why!

Somehow, some things mean more to you than other things. At some time in your life, they have taken on a real importance. But it is not just THINGS that are treasured either. Take Belen. It means a lot to you. Maybe somebody else cannot see why. You probably cannot explain why, but you know that you v alueBelen. You value its Religion, its outstanding acade!Dic level, its family atmoshphere, its high standards of sportmanship.

Take people. You have a friend who means a lot to you. Maybe somebody else cannot see why. You probably cannot explain why but you know that . you value this person. You consider his opinion pretty important. You trust him. And that poses another thought. You value ideas, principles, things you cannot see or touch. It means a lot to you that people are honest or considerate or reliable. You notice to what extremes people go to preserve what they value. Life is valued highly.

To take another's life is a terrible act.

Fr. Daniel Baldor, S.J.

That is why you are upset, bothered, angered when you hear of murders or suicides. You want to know why, though, your values are not the same as someone else's. Or why your values may change. Many current movies present people in situations where they have to make a choice between values. That is it! you choose between two goods by measuring one against the other. That is why some things are more valuable than others. Because you have to make the choice. You have to rate them.

Graduates of 1970. Had you to make the choice again, I am sure that you would come once more to Belen.
