Chemical spills are a fact of life in laboratories and vary in occurrence, size, and type of chemical spilled. A recent study1 that focused on the frequency of occurrence of chemical spills in undergraduate chemistry labs found that all student participants experienced varying spill amounts from small drops to large spills. Inexperienced students may not understand the full impact of chemical spills and therefore, these spills may pose a greater threat. While this study focused on undergraduate labs, accidental spills can happen at any time in any laboratory leading to potential harm. Example: Ming, an undergraduate student at a general chemistry lab, was performing a titration when unknown to her, dilute hydrochloric acid droplets splashed out on to the workbench. Ming continued with her experiment, then removed her equipment and went on to her next class. Later that day, May came to that same bench and brushed her arm against the bench while setting up her experiment, causing a minor burn from the residual HCl.
Solution:
Labmat Bench Liners are a safe way to minimize spill exposure in labs.
