The use of 30-40mm diameter test tubes is common in ASTM standard testing in petrochemistry1,2. These protocols specify use of glass test tubes, which can be cleaned, stored, and reused. However, storage of these tubes can be challenging as test tube racks generally hold tubes up to 30mm, but not over 30mm. Example: Irene frequently works with 35mm O.D. tubes when testing petroleum samples. She tries to clean and reuse them as much as possible, but when they are propped up in a regular drying rack they frequently fall over. She has also tried storing them in the box they came in but it leaves the cardboard soggy.
