Grand Ideas The “B list”

Photo: Rachel Riggin Photography

If there are a handful of guests that you can’t include in your original invitation list, consider making a “B list” to whom you can mail invitations as you receive negative RSVPs. This option gives you a little wiggle room on your list, but try to send your “B list” invites as soon as you can to avoid hurt feelings (as no one wants to know that they’re on the “B list”).

A lot of photographers and videographers charge big-time fees if your wedding goes longer than the time you’ve booked them for. To prevent that unexpected bill, put a “fifteen-minute warning” clause into your contract stating that they must give you a fifteen-minute heads up before they begin charging you overtime, and that if they don’t, you will not have to pay for those overages. “Go into the dress-shopping experience with an idea of what styles are most flattering on your body. You should never feel pressured to buy the dress in the moment. Go home and think about it!” —Laura Oliver, Something New, LLC

A rice toss may be the traditional choice for a recessional toss, but with an abundance of colorful and creative options available today, you have many possibilities to choose from. Bird

seed can be used to congratulate the

couple, and it also feeds wildlife safely. If you’re going to be exiting the venue late enough for it to be dark outside, consider handing out sparklers guests can wave.

Who Pays for What? Establishing the budget for your wedding should be one of the first things you do, because all the planning that comes after that will depend on the budget. How much, if any, will your families contribute? How much do the two of you have to spend? If families are going to help financially, they may decide to pay for certain things, or they may decide to offer a certain amount of money for you to spend where needed. Be careful not to underestimate all the expenses that will occur. 6|Reception to Follow B ridal

Put a “Fifteen-Minute Warning” into Your Contract with the Photographer

Another idea is to distribute per-

cussion instruments like kazoos,

drums, or tambourines.

For a quieter effect, ribbon

wands made with ribbons tied onto wooden dowels for all the guests to wave. Any of these ideas would be colorful, in one way or another, and do a great job of celebrating your arrival as Mrs. and Mr.

Even if family members do help out, costs incurred are ultimately the responsibility of the couple. Make a budget that includes all the expenses you anticipate—and maybe even a “miscellaneous” fund. Decide how much you are able to spend on each budget area. When working with vendors, be sure to get everything in writing, rather than just relying on a verbal agreement. You don’t want any misunderstandings to suddenly wreak havoc with your plan. Traditionally, there are certain things the bride or bride’s family

pays for and certain things the groom or groom’s family pays for. Here is a sampling: Bride/bride’s family: invitations, bride’s wedding dress and accessories, some flowers for wedding party and decoration, engagement and wedding photography, music at wedding and reception, meal and wedding cake, groom’s gift and ring. Groom/groom’s family: marriage license, rehearsal dinner, fee for whoever officiates, some flowers for wedding party, bride’s gift and rings, honeymoon, groom’s wedding clothing.

Why Take Dance Lessons? • Impress your guests • Something fun to learn together • Release stress of planning a wedding • Romantic date night • Create a lifelong memory Learn to dance and more at Get Out and Dance in Wausau!

Take a tax deduction — on your wedding You can get a tax deduction for donating some of your wedding purchases to a qualified charitable organization or even just by having your wedding ceremony at certain venues. If you think you’ll have leftover food from your reception, contact a local homeless shelter and see if you can donate it. If you’re not going to reuse your flowers, contact your church to ask if you can

donate them (if you had a church wedding, you may be able to leave your flowers there as a donation) or reach out to a local hospital or nursing home. If you have a wedding in a church or synagogue, or at a government-owned locale like a state park, you may be able to deduct the fee paid for the ceremony (check with the locale to make sure it’s tax deductible).

Grand Ideas Best Man Duties

▪ The best man is the person the groom asks to take care of any details, such as returning his formal wear, while he is honeymooning. ▪ Deliver the ceremony officiant’s fee.

Is it rude to ask for money as gifts? No, give a reason why or a description as to why you are asking for “money gifts only” (i.e., purchase of a new home, etc). Otherwise, registering for gifts is the tradtional way to go.

The bride’s guests usually sit on the left side and the groom’s guests on the right side. These sides are reversed in an Orthodox Jewish ceremony.

Wedding Crashers of the Worst Sort You definitely didn't invite them to your wedding, but as it turns out, bugs don't give a hoot. Outsmart them with these tips!

◘ Tape fabric softener sheets to seats Countless folks swear by dryer sheets! For whatever reason, they seem to really work. Since you don't want them to be eyesores though, try having your planner strategically tape them to the bottom of your wedding chairs so that they're hidden from the naked eye and guests are clueless.

Mother of the bride is the last person seated at the ceremony and the first guest to exit after the recessional. Remember when every wedding table had disposable cameras? Today's couples give their guests codes to use WeddingMix. Collect every photo and every video clip from every guest at every moment of your big day. More info at weddingmix.com

◘ Rent some fans Cool off your guests and get rid of flies as well! Fans are particularly important to have around your buffet table and any other food, like your cake, that's outside. The bugs will literally be blown away. ◘ Pick flowers bugs despise Ask your florist to incorporate flowers and plants that mosquitos are known to hate into your centerpieces and bouquet. "Some good options are citronella, lemon balm, lavender, marigolds and peppermint." They’ll smell sweet to you but not to uninvited crashers! Reception to Follow B ridal | 7

The Voice of Experience Trusted Men’s Formalwear Advice By Patrick Campbell, Campbell Haines, Wausau

S

hopping for men’s wedding attire is a novel experience. It is not something you do on a regular basis, but it need not be confusing or intimidating if you do your homework first. I have seen many changes in wedding fashion over the years: many positive changes and some not so good. I am disturbed by the number of negative stories people tell me regarding their wedding experience. I hope this article will arm you with information that will make your wedding planning more efficient, economical, and stress free. Should I rent or buy? What is the difference between a suit and a tuxedo? My wedding party is scattered all over the country, how do we make that work? How much does it cost? When does this need to be done? Do not be afraid to ask questions. Ask, learn, and think before shopping. Let us start at the beginning. There are three basic tiers of wedding fashion: informal, semi-formal, and formal. Determining which type of wedding you have is the first order of business. Today’s weddings are more casual than at any time in modern history. Church weddings are becoming beach weddings, backyard weddings, and barn weddings. Outdoor weddings may be informal or semi-formal. Indoor weddings may be semi-formal or formal.

8|Reception to Follow B ridal

Informal Outdoor Weddings

For informal outdoor weddings, we are seeing a shift away from suits and sportcoats to jacket-less outfits. Compliments of Pinterest, today’s de rigueur costume for male members of the wedding party is a shirt, pants, vest combination or a shirt, pants, suspender combination. Ties appear to be optional. Ok, I realize this is a popular trend, but so were powder blue tuxedos, ruffled shirts, and jumpsuits. As a traditionalist, my major concern here is that in many of these jacketless weddings the bride is wearing a wedding gown. She is dressed formally, he is not. Unless your bride is wearing a sundress, barefooted, and wearing a ring of daisies in her hair, you need to be wearing a coat. It is only for a little while; you can take it off after the pictures. I often wonder what the bride’s family thinks after spending big bucks on a meticulously tailored satin gown when the groom appears at the wedding dressed for a picnic.

Renting Is Better Than Buying Cheap Suits

Another popular option is the suited wedding party. Even as a traditionalist, I have no problem with this for either indoor or outdoor weddings. If a man is more comfortable in a suit than a tuxedo, I gladly say let him wear a suit.

However, there has been in recent years a huge marketing effort by the manufacturing and retail industries to convince people to buy cheap suits for the entire wedding party. The spiel is generally, “Why rent an expensive tuxedo, when for a little more you can own a suit.” First of all, this is the same industry that made formalwear rentals expensive in the first place. Secondly, these cheap suits are, in fact, cheaply made and ill fitting. Finally, after factoring in the cost of shipping, alterations, shirt, tie, belt, shoes, socks, and tie, the actual price paid for each outfit is roughly three times the cost of a rental package. Nobody ever mentions that part. If you choose to rent suits or tuxedos, you will find that the rental industry can provide the most economical and efficient means of outfitting a wedding party. Tuxedos are available in sizes ranging from size 4Boys to big and tall. Suits, once a stepchild of the rental industry, are now available in contemporary fits and styles and a full range of sizes. There simply is no other clothing medium that offers the array of colors, fits, and styles necessary to satisfy the modern bride.

Meet with an Experienced Formalwear Consultant

If you choose to rent, your first step is to meet with a formalwear consultant. This is generally done three to twelve months before the wedding, usually after the venues are booked, the dresses are chosen, and in conjunction with floral planning. It is important that you approach this process as carefully as if you were buying a used car. Today’s wedding supermarkets employ very few experienced consultants and many, many sales people. Beware of contracts, deposits, and sales pitches. Approach this shopping experience armed with questions about styles, fits, color, price, service, experience, logistics, and hidden costs. Never assume anything.

Style and Fit

A tuxedo is basically a suit with satin trim, and formalwear tends to mimic the suit industry in terms of style and fit. Formalwear and suits styles are generally released twice a year, a spring season and a fall season. Regardless of brand or label, rental industry clothing is manufactured according to commonly accepted levels of quality, style, and fit. If “slim” and “modern” fits are the style of the season, then everyone makes “slim” and “modern” fits that season. The only differences found between brands are colors and trim. Therefore, when shopping for formalwear during any given year, you will find much of the same thing wherever you go.

Keep It Simple

I would like to say a word about wedding fashion before we move on to price, service, and logistics. Please try to remember that you are dressing for a wedding, not a prom. In today’s wedding world, free from tradition and etiquette, there is no one to rein you in if you go off target. A cardinal sin of the fashion industry is the desire to sell you all things matching. We have an

entire generation that has been groomed to match. Your formalwear salespeople will happily add matching tie, vest, socks, pocket, square, and perhaps even underwear to your ticket. Don’t do it. Dress elegantly, dress simply, dress timelessly.

Understanding the Formalwear Business

If someone tells me how much they paid for a rental fee or what their “package price” was, I can usually tell where they rented their outfits. The wedding business is a billion dollar industry, and unless you go into it informed, the industry will get more than their share from you. People do not understand the basics of formalwear pricing and so become susceptible to being overcharged, sometimes by a great deal of money. The formalwear industry operates on tiered pricing levels. Newest styles cost the most, oldest styles cost the least. That’s all there is to it. Beware of discount packages in the sub-hundred-dollar range. These are based on the oldest models of clothing in the inventory, items that are very tired and very worn out. Discount packages may also include additional charges for premium items such as a choice of shirt, accessories, or shoes. Avoid coupon packages at all costs. Not long ago the industry learned that they could move away from a la carte pricing to inflated package pricing and still increase volume and margin while issuing “coupons.” In this industry coupons do not save you money. We have regularly seen coupon prices over $200. If you pay over $200 for a rental item in this part of the world, pat yourself on the back, you’ve been had. Let us put aside for a moment bad fashion advice, and overpricing and turn our attention to service. Before selecting a dealer, you need to know if they can do the job. Do they have the experience, the facilities, and the manpower to do the job? A proper fitting model includes a fitting, final fitting, adjustments, pick-up, and return. How does your dealer handle each of these phases? How do they handle out-of-town members of the party, can they make last minute adjustments, are deposits required, what about late fees? Will you be dealing with professional fitters and alteration people or part-time salesclerks?

We Tell You the Truth

I don’t mean to preach. I really don’t. But, over and over, I hear horror stories of weddings gone wrong, bad service, bad fit, overcharging, hidden charges. These things give the industry a black eye. Too many people tell me, “I wish I had known. I wish someone had told me.” We have a motto in our shop, “We tell the truth whether you like it or not.” People really do appreciate that. I want you to have your dream wedding. I want your pictures to be stunning and timeless. Most of all, I want you to remember that this is your wedding day: don’t stress, enjoy yourself, enjoy your family, and above all, be happy.

Hayley & Justin Cochard September 12, 2015

A country wedding is what Hayley and Justin wanted. The couple traveled from Indiana along with family and many friends, so the bride's family would be able to participate in the planning and attend the wedding. Munson Bridge Winery had it all. A hayloft complete with chandelier and hay bales for seating was the perfect site for the ceremony. Everywhere you looked there was a touch of country. Burlap, lace, flowers, and antiques; just stunning. Hayley and Justin cooked up apple butter (groom's family secret recipe) for guest favors. An antique window frame was used to display photos from their parents weddings along with the grandparents' wedding photos. There were also wedding dresses belonging to the bride's mother and grandmother on display. At night, a fire was built for roasting marshmallows along with milk shots and cookies for snacks. The day turned out just as Hayley and Justin had hoped. Family, friends, and fun under a starry sky.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23RD SUNDAY, JANUARY 29TH Central WI Convention+Expo Center 11:00 am - 2:00 pm Bridal Fashion Show 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Tickets: $5.00 in Advance $7.00 at the Door On Sale at Elegant Occasions or Midwest Communications with locations in Wausau and Plover

►Prepare. Before you even head out to the fabulous bridal show you saw advertised, do some important prep work. First of all, you can save money by buying tickets ahead instead of at the door. Keeping your budget and overall plan in mind, decide what products and services you need and how much you’re willing to spend. This will help you narrow down what vendors you’ll want to spend time talking with. Another good idea is to create and print out labels ahead of time that have your name, wedding date, and contact information listed clearly. This will make it fast and easy to sign up for lots of drawings for discounts and/or free services and products. Also, arrange to have key wedding-plan decision makers attend with you. With all of you there, you will be able to make decisions on the spot if a good deal or perfect service comes up.

►Special email. It’s a good idea to create an email account that is totally just for wedding-related correspondence. This assures that you don’t miss a wedding-planning email in the midst of all your other email. ►Optimize the show’s program. Use it to mark fashions you like that you saw during the fashion show. Look it over when you first arrive, or even ahead of time if possible, and circle vendors you especially want to visit. Use the contact info listed in the program to later contact those vendors that you want to talk with further.

►Enjoy it! Yes, you have many plans to make, things to buy, and venues to rent. But the main thing is that you are getting married. Have fun at the show! Reception to Follow B ridal | 11

Deciding on Wedding Jewelry? 5 Ti p s f r o m a D e s i g n e r

By Tana Scobell

1.

If you want wedding jewelry custom made for you, be sure to allow enough time. If you are considering ordering custom jewelry, make an appointment with the jewelry designer as soon as possible. I recommend at least four months before the wedding. First you and your designer will want to discuss ideas and decide what general direction you want to go. After that, it takes time for your designer to collect samples and draw up sketches of her ideas. Start preparing now by keeping a journal and gathering photos of the styles, colors, and sizes of jewelry that appeal to you.

2.

Set a budget. This is a simple but crucial part of the process. It’s important to have a solid understanding of what you can afford before you start planning the jewelry and choosing materials for it. You may wish to use 14 karat, but your budget may be more in tune with gold fill, sterling silver, or base metal. One money-saving tip is to use a combination of higher-priced and lower-priced materials, using the better quality metals on the parts of the jewelry that will be in contact with the skin. Another way to save money, and to add sentimental value, is to ask an aunt or grandmother or other relative for a piece of their less-worn jewelry. For example you could incorporate a family member’s brooch or pair of earrings into your jewelry suite.

3.

Explore and choose a style. The good news is there are several styles to choose from: modern, boho, antique, classic. The hottest trend currently is classic with a touch of boho. Once you’ve decided on a style, you can move on to picking finishes. Again, you have many possible ones to consider: gold, antique gold, silver, antique silver, rose gold, gun metal, or an eclectic mix of metal colors. The most popular approach is to create your own mix of finishes. Your jewelry may be where you choose to add color and your personality. To make it really yours, you can add beads, crystals, or pearls.

4.

Work with the designer to match colors. Sometimes when incorporating color into the jewelry, it may be challenging to match the jewelry with the clothing colors chosen for your wedding. One way to successfully match a color is to use three or four colors

in the jewelry that are all very close to the color you are trying to match in the clothing. No matter what time of day, or interior or exterior lighting, your colors will seem to match. Even when trying to match white or ivory, you should use this technique for matching color. It is also very helpful to get samples of the fabrics you’ll have in the wedding.

5.

Consider all the other wedding jewelry you may need. What about earrings? What type is most comfortable for you to wear: post, French wire, clip-on? Whichever type you choose, wear them a few weeks before your big day. If they are too heavy or uncomfortable, they can be changed. Any earring can be turned into a post, French wire, or clip-on. Don’t forget your hair. A hair clip or comb can be made to coordinate with the rest of your jewelry. Also consider having a “fascinator,” a head band popular in the UK and usually embellished with tulle, feathers, or metal jewelry pieces. It can be worn for the ceremony but is compact enough to be worn throughout the reception too. What about bridesmaids’ jewelry? Their jewelry doesn’t have to match, but using similar components in a cohesive way will give each girl an individual look while maintaining an overall coordinated look. Don’t forget about thank you gifts. A personal, special thank you gift like a custom-made piece of jewelry for the mother of the bride and future mother-in-law would be a thoughtful choice. One way to do this is to repurpose a sentimental piece of jewelry to be current again. For more information, call Tana Scobell at 715-551-0893. Her website will be ready mid-October at degagejewelry.com

What Dress Is Best for Your Body Type? Pear or Triangle: small bust with full hips Pear

You want a dress that emphasizes your upper half. Think capped, poufy sleeves. Add appliqué or beading to the bodice. In contrast, chose a dress with a plain skirt and high waistline.

Ball Gown

Do NOT choose clingy fabric or cuts, and steer away from dresses with ruffly skirts or bustles.

Apple or Full-Figure: full bust, hips, and waistline Simple design is your friend. A fuller skirt, angled lines, V-neckline, and waist. Princess A-line dresses work well for you. Don’t go with form-fitted dresses or ones with lots of detailing.

Apple

Petite: short height, overall smaller bust, hips, and waistline Vertical lines will add height visually. Try mermaid or sheath dresses. Use high necklines to lengthen the torso. Try Princess style or dresses with an empire waist.

Empire

Avoid large, poufy dresses. They will only make you look wider not taller.

Rectangle: proportional bust and hips, undefined waistline Rectangle

Look for a dress that will add curves to your body, such as the Princess style. Or try an empire waistline and lots of detail on the bodice. Off-the-shoulder necklines provide horizontal lines to break up the straighter line of your figure.

Sheath

Better not to choose a dress that clings or one requiring you to fill it out (like a darted bustline).

Inverted Triangle: full bust with small hips Seek to highlight your lower half while de-emphasizing your upper half. Stick with a simple bodice. Try a dropped waist design, or use bows, pleats, or beading to emphasize the skirt.

Inverted Triangle

Don’t go with low-cut bodices, high waistlines, slim skirts, or decorated, accented sleeves.

Mermaid

Hourglass: full bust and hips, small waistline You can go with almost any style of dress. A mermaid style dress would show off your curves. Or to downplay your curves, go with a simple, classic look. Just be sure to avoid very high necklines, and avoid too much decoration because it may make you look heavier than you really are.

Flowers to Create Your Dream Day: Blossoms and Bows By Charmaine Prewitt

T

rends come and go, and keeping abreast of colors and designs is what Blossoms and Bows has done for forty-three years. Each season provides a different variety of color and styles of cut flowers to be used to create that special design for each individual bride. The florist provides a unique and exciting touch to a wedding, contributing creatively to the wedding theme. That is why it is necessary to have a consultation before a price can be determined. Nowhere else in your plans is everything tailored exactly as you desire. A wedding dress has so many jewels and pearls already sewn on, your caterer has a set menu based on quantity of guests attending, and the DJ and photographer have promotional packages for you to select from. But the quantity and size of floral blossoms can be custom-designed just for you. Blossoms and Bows is able to provide great service for your wedding from the moment you step into the shop till you walk down the aisle. Our extensive designs for the bridal party to reception bouquets can be simple or as elaborate as your desire or budget indicates. The flowers most frequently utilized are hydrangeas and roses, and typically a lot of pods and/or wispy grasses. A very casual, natural look is the 2017 look. Inspired designs with exotic lush foliage or sometimes no foliage shown at all and the flowers placed tightly in a mounded cluster are carried by the bride and her bridesmaids. Normally the boutonnieres for the gentleman are small variations of the blossoms used within the girls’ bouquets. The ends 30|Reception to Follow B ridal

may be wrapped in ribbon, and adornments of wire and jewels may be added to give it some glitz. Metallic gold is making a comeback, and large pedestal urns can be filled with fresh floral blossoms spilling out to make a dramatic effect at the reception. Or there still is the simplistic rose placed in a small cube with grasses to give that table that special décor to enhance the wedding festivity. Fresh flowers for the cake table are still popular; however, with the surge of the cupcake creations, less wedding couples are having a traditional wedding cake. A wonderful and very thoughtful idea is to order flowers to be delivered to your parents the week after the wedding with a hand-written note from each of you indicating your gratitude for all that they have done for you. This can be ordered at the time that the flowers are ordered. Most floral shops can accommodate taking that order in advance and holding your special note until time of delivery. Whether your wedding is large or small, Blossoms and Bows can accommodate you to make your day just as you had dreamed of. They can work with your budget to create that absolutely divine look and develop a theme from the rehearsal dinner to the throwing of the bouquet after the Grand March. Their friendly and helpful staff is ready to sit down for an hour consultation in which the fee is automatically applied to the total wedding floral bill. This consultation lasts approximately one hour, and appointments are necessary. Give us a call at 715-8455208 and let us create with flowers the day that you always dreamed of.
