PREFACE PLAYGROUND MATTERS In conjunction with the HaitiProject, a development cooperation between bachelor students of architecture and design from Anhalt University and Haiti Nothilfe e.V. / FMCS Haiti for a health post on the grounds of the FMCS orphanage in Jacmel (South-Haiti), students from the international master program “DIA” at Anhalt University picked up the task of formulating smart and fun designs for sport and playground areas on site. Starting in April 2017 the first semester was dedicated to researching materiality, alternative techniques for highquality upcycling solutions and discussing strategies for participative design. The second semester from October 2017 to January 2018 was focused on the realization of the specific proposals, testing techniques in different scales and preparing the design ideas for the ultimate test: reality – the reality of materiality, of participants, and last but not least of budgeting. After a series of experimentations in workshops and collaborations the students finally moved from sketch to site, for which this manual was produced. In the semester break from mid-February until mid-March 2018 4 students dared to break out of university routine and bring their ideas to the test in Jacmel, to continue experimenting and building together with the users of FMCS.
