I-WORX OPENS IN BEDFORD BOROUGH The Bedford i-Worx is now officially open following a ribbon cutting by Mayor Dave Hodgson and SEMLEP Chair Peter Horrocks CBE. The newly launched i-Worx features an advanced ‘Technology and Engineering Workshop Cluster’, offering twelve modern office and industrial units, which will form part of the Bedford Commercial Park. Bedford Commercial Park is a 45-acre mixed-use development owned and managed by global property firm Goodman, adjacent to the wellconnected A421. The first phase has seen the completion of a 407,143 sq. ft. logistics warehouse, with further development of the site set to create up to 1,600 jobs.

EAST WEST RAIL IS COMING TO AND THROUGH BEDFORD! It has been announced that East West Rail will be stopping at Bedford Midland station, connecting the town directly to Cambridge and Oxford. This ‘Central Section’ builds on the ‘Western Section’, connecting Oxford and Bicester with services through to Bedford. This confirmation is excellent news for Bedford residents. Increased connectivity for the town will bring more opportunities to travel for work and leisure, as well as supporting economic growth and prosperity, attracting businesses and jobs. Recent modelling in the Bedford Borough Council Rail Strategy showed that East West Rail is forecast 4

One of the twelve bespoke units that make up the i-Worx site will be used as a dedicated education and training facility to help inspire the next generation of students and help prepare people with the technical skills for these kinds of businesses. This will be available for local schools and educational institutions when it becomes operational later this year. The vision for i-Worx is to enable and support entrepreneurs and small businesses to thrive - and with the emerging Oxford-Cambridge Arc, Bedford Borough Council are targeting and supporting businesses ready to build and grow in our area. To find out more about moving into the i-Worx, or other Bedford Borough Council i-Brand serviced buildings, please visit: www.bedfordi-lab.com/. to bring over £20million of additional economic activity to our Borough. This could be additional investment, businesses, and jobs. Mayor Dave Hodgson said “Bedford Borough Council recently launched a ‘Rail Strategy for Bedford’; setting out our vision for Bedford Borough to be a great place to live, work and visit and to create a Borough that attracts international business and highly skilled and sustainable jobs. “This announcement is the first step in the delivery of this Strategy, and places Bedford at the heart of this key new infrastructure. Our Rail Strategy demonstrates our commitment to improving rail infrastructure for the benefit of local residents and a vibrant local economy. “I would like to say thank you to our officers for all their hard work and to Cllr Michael Headley, who has sat on the East West Rail Consortium for a decade successfully pushing the case for Bedford.”

MP COLUMN

VIEWS FROM RICHARD FULLER, YOUR LOCAL MP...

With our departure from the European Union behind us, Parliament can now move on to other issues such as NHS funding, future arrangements for our farmers and improvements to our nation’s infrastructure. Even in these early days as your Member of Parliament, I have made sure to press Government Ministers on a number of key priorities for Bedfordshire.

I challenged the Health Secretary to pay special attention to the need for better access to a GP appointment in places such as Biggleswade, Sandy, Arlesey and Stotfold where there have been new housing developments. I presented the Chief Secretary to the Treasury with an ‘oven-ready’ deal, making Ministers aware of what could be achieved in North East Bedfordshire through a crossdepartmental infrastructure bid to support housing, health services and transport issues. After the announcement of the Eastern section route of East-West Rail, which will link Oxford to Cambridge via Bedford and a new station between St Neots and Sandy, I successfully lobbied the Transport Minister to look again at the case for realignment of the A1 to deal with the congestion and pollution suffered by people along the existing road. 6

Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

Outside of Parliament, I hosted a meeting so the Managing Director of Govia Thameslink could meet with representatives of the Rail User Groups for Arlesey and Biggleswade. Even with the current “hold” on any station skipping at Arlesey I am under no illusion as to just how bad things have been for passengers and I will be arranging a series of further meetings to tackle some of the causes of these disruptions. I have held my first Farmers’ Forum, to listen to opinions on the Agriculture Bill, food and animal welfare standards and on rural crime concerns. It has been a busy month, but I have enjoyed my constituency Fridays and weekends meeting and visiting schools, parish councils, local organisations and charities and I even had the pleasure of opening the new home for Stotfold FC. If you have questions for me, a campaigning issue close to your heart or if you would like me to visit a local organisation that you are a part of, then please call my office on 01767 313385. It will be nice to hear from you.

Don’t Get Locked In are extremely excited to announce a relocation to Bedford town centre at the end of February 2020. An already established family run business with some amazing Trip Advisor reviews, Don’t Get Locked In has been in business for nearly 2 years located in Wing, Leighton Buzzard. It has taken 12 months from starting to look for premises to opening and the project hasn’t been without its challenges. “The move has taken a lot longer than anticipated, but we are very happy that we held out for the right premises as we will have capacity and space for 6 themed escape rooms and we’ve got lots of ideas and plans”, said Marcus Wright, Director. The space in Allhallows, Bedford covers 2 floors and will be opening up with 2 brand new themed rooms, ‘Gin & Panic’ and ‘Extortion’ at the end of February. There will then be 2 more rooms ‘The Secret Hut’ and ‘The Rock’, currently at the Wing site, which will open up in Bedford around April 2020. The remaining rooms will open up mid 2020, including a 2hour escape room game. Escape room games are becoming more and more popular with players seeking new and exciting games to play and challenging themselves to see if they can escape. They are a fantastic activity to do with friends or family and are perfect for teambuilding and corporate events. For those reading this new to the idea of escape rooms, you are not actually ‘locked in’, it’s just a game and is covered in the safety briefing before the game is played. Teams of 2-6 take on a ‘real life’ escape game, working together in a cleverly themed room to uncover a series of clues and puzzles. They are very addictive and great fun!

Like ‘The Secret Hut’ and ‘The Rock’ their two already popular escape rooms which have been running for 2 years in Wing, Don’t Get Locked In’s new escape rooms have been designed and built by Marcus, making it a totally unique and authentic experience. The only question is, will you escape? Cathy Wright who will be running the day to dayoperations said “We’re really excited to be the first escape room in Bedford town centre and can’t wait to open. To book a session for any of our games please use our online booking system at www.dontgetlockedin.com For more information on Don’t Get Locked In including prices see www.dontgetlockedin.com The location of Don’t Get Locked In is 23-27 Allhallows, Bedford, MK40 1LN

BOOK REVIE

T H E H A N D M A I D ’ S TA L E by Margaret Atwood

You’d have to have been living under a rock over the last couple of years to have not heard of The Handmaid’s Tale even if it is just through the hugely successful TV series on Channel 4. Fans of the book have not been disappointed by the TV series and so this bodes well for people wanting to go the other way. The novel tells the story of life in Gilead from the point of view of Offred, a handmaid to commander in the new political regime. A dystopian view of America presents us with a country where fertility levels have declined due to radiation poisoning and so Offred’s ability to reproduce means that she is forced to bear children for the upper echelons of society. Atwood uses a form of dual narrative to present the story to us, as chapters alternate between ‘night’ revealing more of Offred’s feelings and glimpses into her past, and ‘day’ showing us glimpses of day to day life in Gilead. It is hard to put your finger on what has made this novel so successful, but Atwood’s sources of inspiration may offer a clue. She has said that everything she writes about in the novel is based on events that happened at some point in history. There is nothing fantastical here, but purely the uneasiness of realising what human beings might indeed be capable of.

FILM REVIEW

V I VA R I U M

Vivarium is a film that borders the line of thriller and horror, it feels like a thriller but the mood and tone of it is very much more on the horror side. The story is simple enough, a young couple are looking for a new home and are taken by an estate agent to view a house on a new estate. Vivarium is a terrific film with an outstanding couple of leads that keeps you involved and really does keep you guessing as to what the endgame will be. The makers have managed to create a seriously creepy mood with the look and the background music. You know something weird is going on very early on but they make sure not to let too much information come your way so that you are as much in the dark as the characters you are watching. I have seen many, many films so anything that keeps me wondering and catches me off guard is always going to be a potential winner with me but when it also manages to nail the ending and not end up a disappointment then I have nothing but fulsome praise. Vivarium is not a film for everyone but it sure is something a bit different.

Support for those who need help to get online will continue to be available from the council’s Customer Services centre. Dave Hodgson, Mayor of Bedford Borough said, “The Council is making it easier, quicker, and more convenient for residents to report problems, request or pay for Council services online at a time that suits. We are not finished yet, there is plenty more to come in the coming months to make it easier to save time by contacting the Council online. W E AV I N G N A R R AT I V E S A popular craft project linking stories to our past is set to return to Bedfordshire Archives. The Weaving Narratives project invites people to use the archives as inspiration to create textile works. When the project was first run, amateur and professional textile artists successfully created an amazing range of pieces. With new archives added to the collections all the time the projects return has been welcomed. The project is open to anyone interested in taking part. Participants are offered an introduction to Archive Service and the chance to take part in three workshops. Assisted by archive professionals, they will be given special access to original archive materials representing hundreds of years of Bedfordshire’s history. The form and nature of each textile work will be entirely up to the participants and works can also be created by groups of participants. Workshops are free and are held at the Archives, Riverside Building, Borough Hall, Bedford on Saturdays 7th March, 4th April and 13th June, from 10am to 12pm. Anyone wishing to take part should book a place by emailing archive@bedford.gov.uk or calling 01234 228833. Places are limited and are first come, first served. Participants need to provide their own materials. The project will culminate in the Autumn with a series of exhibitions of the works produced.

VISITING THE V E T E R I N A RY S U R G E RY

WITH A NERVOUS DOG

At Acorn House we understand that many dogs are worried about coming to see the vet. Our receptionists are always keen to provide treats and friendly fuss to help our canine patients feel happy about visiting the surgery. However, if you have a dog that finds veterinary visits difficult, let Acorn House help you to help your pet.

LET US KNOW

If you know that your dog is nervous about visiting the vet, let us know. We can offer appointments at a quiet time so that your dog can avoid a stressful time in the waiting room. Some of our nervous dogs prefer to wait in the car, car park or practice garden. Others like to have their entire examination in the practice garden and don’t come into the practice at all if they can help it! We are happy to accommodate your dog if you let us know what they would prefer.

SEE THE SAME VET EACH TIME

If possible, it is best to see the same vet every time, so that they can build a trusting relationship with your dog. Remember to let the receptionist know which vet you would like to see when you call (or use our online system).

BRING TASTY TREATS TO THE SURGERY

At Acorn House we have four different tasty treats to offer our doggy patients (health permitting!) but if you know that your dog prefers something specific (maybe cheese or sausage) then bring it with you and ask your vet to use that instead.

STRESS FREE HANDLING

Your vet can learn a lot about your pet without touching! Observing movement, body condition, eye reflexes, breathing patterns and behaviour are all important parts of the examination that can be performed without your pet even noticing. This allows our vets to make a careful decision about any further checks that may be needed.

ANTI-ANXIETY MEDICATION

Our vets can prescribe medication for owners to give nervous dogs before they visit the surgery. This often allows nervous dogs to stay calm and have a positive experience at the surgery – improving the situation in the future as well as that particular visit.

SEDATION

At Acorn House we would always recommend sedation or anaesthesia for painful or stressful procedures. Our hospital is well equipped with air conditioning, large, comfortable kennels and nursing care on-site 24 hours a day.

GARDENING

AN ANNUAL FIESTA I’ve always loved an annual. From Bunty to The Blue Peter Annual, they were crammed full of interest and fun. As I grew older my taste in annuals has become more horticultural. One little pack of seeds is now my gardening equivalent of the Beano - a brief shelf-life and packed with colour. Hardy annuals are the most obliging. They don’t need a propagator or a greenhouse, or even a windowsill; all they need is a sunny spot and some well-drained soil. Just sprinkle the seeds in the ground and you can look forward to a fiesta of summer colour for very little work. The choice of plants and hue is wide. If blue is your thing try a soft shade of love-in-a-mist, or a vivid blue cornflower, or the most gorgeous tiny phacelia. For pinks try a fluffy clarkia or delicate godetia. Nasturtiums span the colour wheel from cream through yellow and orange to deep red. Annual doesn’t mean small either. Both larkspurs and amaranthus are tall and elegant, and cleomes which also provide height probably only need to be planted once as they are prolific self-seeders! Look around your garden for gaps in beds and borders which are in a sunny spot and well-drained.

52 52 Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

Don’t plant when it’s cold or the soil is wet and sticky. Wait until the weather is mild and soil is damp and crumbly, then fork it lightly to break it up. Use a rake to create shallow furrows, sprinkle the seeds over and rake them gently in, raking across the furrows to cover them. Bigger seeds like nasturtiums can be pushed into the soil a couple of centimetres deep and 10-15cm apart. Label the area so you know what should come up. The biggest enemy of the newly-planted hardy annual seed is the domestic cat! They love a patch of freshly raked soil, and will happily do their business in your handiwork and then kick up all your seeds without a second thought. Thwart the moggies by laying twiggy pea sticks over the area (and particularly twiggy and thorny prunings will do!). Remove them with the shoots are big enough or stand them up and use them to support the taller annuals. Thin them out a little to one plant per 10cm and water them if the weather is very dry. You don’t need to feed them, they flower best when the soil is not rich. Food and manure will favour leaf production whereas we’re after flowers and lots of them! Happy gardening.

GARDENING

STORM & WIND DAMAGE TO TREES

What to look for Key indicators of tree damage and failure are: • Cracks and splits in structural sections of the tree. • Roots lifting at the base of the stem • Broken limbs in the canopy Structural damage can be limited with regular pruning, structural supports and preventative maintenance.

Following high winds it is important to have you trees checked for potential defects that could lead to your trees failure. Large trees in prominent location need to be inspected on annual basis. Tree owners have a “Duty of Care” to ensure their trees are safe which will also help should a tree fail and an insurance claim is made. Prevention of damage is always favourable but trees should also be checked following high winds.
