COMMUNITY

COUNCIL

news

LOCAL GROUPS BENEFIT FROM FREE TULIP BULBS GIVEAWAY Bedford Borough Council has given away thousands of tulip bulbs to nearly 30 local charities, schools and community groups, for free. With the seasonal change of the Embankment planting going into the summer, the Council has given away the tulip bulbs from the spring planting.

Local groups were invited to request tulip bulbs, and lots got in touch with the Council including the Abbey Fields Roundabout Group, schools including Castle Newnham and Scott Primary, charities such as Bedford Open Door and Bedford Guild House, as well as local brownie groups and residents associations.

BEDFORD BOROUGH’S POOLS, GYMS, AND LEISURE FACILITIES TELL US WHAT YOU THINK? Bedford Borough Council is asking residents to get in touch to let them know what you think about the Council’s leisure facilities, run by Fusion Lifestyle. Just over five years ago, Bedford Borough Council engaged Fusion Lifestyle to run its leisure centres. This saw Fusion Lifestyle take over management of the six local leisure facilities; Bedford International Athletic Stadium, the Bunyan Centre, Mowsbury Golf and Squash Complex, Robinson Pool, Kempston Pool and Oasis Pool, and two outdoor activity centres at Kempston and Blue Peris in Snowdonia. In that time there has been major works and investment at a number of our local leisure

facilities. These have included major works at both Robinson Pools and Fitness with a new gym and studios, alongside much improved changing rooms and cafeteria, and at John Bunyan Sports and Fitness with a new gym and soft play area built. The consultation survey is at https://forms. bedford.gov.uk/leisuresurvey Individuals and groups can also tell us their views on the leisure facilities by post and email, or go along to a local library or leisure centre to find out more. Responses must be received by 5pm on Friday 9th August.

MUSIC IN THE MEADOWS IS BACK FOR SUMMER Free bandstand concerts are coming back to Mill Meadows on the Embankment this summer. This 2019 concert series at the Victorian Bandstand is being kindly sponsored by The Longholme, who will be providing seasonal catering and refreshments at each event.

Sunday 14th July- Salvation Army Band Sunday 21st July- The Hitchin Band Sunday 28th July- May Blossom Vintage Songbird Sunday 4th August- The Mainline Big Band Sunday 18th August- Bedford Saxophone Workshop Sunday 25th August- Bedford Town Band Each concert is from 3pm-5pm, and is completely free to attend.

Home Counties Loft Ladders, Quality You Can Trust! These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Home Counties Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50sqft of boarding and a light - all fully fitted in less than a day from just £355! But it’s not just the affordability of the package that makes Home Counties Loft Ladders stand out, as manager Jamie Oakley explains: ‘Our

watchwords are Quality, Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen, so our customers are assured of the best job.

- that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for

every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, call Jamie free on 0808 301 9559 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we get a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers

VIEWS FROM A L I S TA I R B U R T, YO U R L O C A L M P. . .

The A1 – what future? Firstly, let me be clear, I am a politician not an engineer, and I don’t claim to be an expert on road development. But I do know I am now angry that I am too often seeing people killed and hurt on our section of the A1, our towns polluted beyond safe measure, and being told only that a ‘strategic study’ will look at what options exist. I have spent a lot of time in the past few years being in meetings and writing letters to Ministers about the A1 through NE Bedfordshire. If you speak to anyone not from this area who drives on the A1 regularly, they will say ’ah yes, the narrow bit with roundabouts’ as we are now one of the only sections that has not been upgraded. There have recently been a couple of nasty road traffic accidents, which again brings the safety of this piece of road into question. So what are the facts? There have been strategic studies – the A1 east of England strategic study is one of 6 that will inform the development of the road networks; Highways Agency tell me that while boasting a strong strategic case, the transport benefits of major improvements to the A1 between Baldock and north of Buckden have been shown to be 6

Please mention bedslife when responding to adverts

‘limited due to low traffic levels’. Therefore, they say current business case does not stack up – the cost of improvements outweighs the benefits. I would counter again with ‘But what about the people living on the route?’ The Ministry of Housing Communities and Local Government are working to better understand the potential and likelihood of development in the corridor, and how this could affect the case for A1 improvements, and if it concludes that the A1 corridor offers potential for significant housing development, there might then be more work put into looking at options for transport in the area. Another strategic study? Really? In late 2021 work is due to start on the new triple layer Black Cat roundabout to carry the Expressway, a new gyratory layer, and the A1, with the long distance idea that at some point the A1 will be realigned to remove it from our towns and villages on the route and a new junction made onto the expressway further away. So where does that leave a two year project on the Black Cat, taking the A1 underneath? The A1 needs realigning, but in the meanwhile we need urgent measures from Government to improve our current situation, and I will redouble efforts to raise this with Ministers at every opportunity.

More for the adults and bringing his humour to the stage this August is the one and only Jimmy Carr. The Gloria Estefan Experience will also be appearing live in conjunction with the new Broadway smash hit musical ‘On Your Feet’. Or, perhaps the Prosecco Festival, now with Gin, is your more your thing. All of these and more are being held at the Bedford Corn Exchange.

W H AT ’ S O N IN THE S C H O O L H O L I DAY S School holidays are in full flow now so if you are looking for ideas, things happening in the town this summer, make sure you check regularly on www.lovebedford.co.uk and go to the ‘What’s On’ page. This details all the information about activities, events, concerts, shows and more in the town centre of Bedford. The Bedford Library have their summer reading challenge ‘Space Chase’ amongst other activities while at the Higgins you can travel through time with Kevin the Platypus, explore the collection at The Higgins and get creative in the horribly historical family workshops.

Welcomed to Bedford this summer is a number of new businesses. Firstly, Lotus Store, a veggie & oriental market store, based on Castle Lane. They stock a wide range of traditional and modern Asian and Vietnamese food, including Vegan Fish sauce, soya sauces, chilli sauces, noodles and rice and much more including gifts and music. Situated in Clair Court off Lime Street, is the brand new Haus of Lashes & Brows. This lovely salon is the first salon in Bedford to be solely dedicated to ONLY lashes and brows! Book well in advance as they are proving very popular! At the top of St Peters Street you will now find The Foundry. This quirky, open plan unit is a brand new co-working space in Bedford offering an innovative and flexible workspace community. Lastly Love Bedford would like to welcome BBTEA. This is Bedford’s newest, premium bubble tea shop. Family owned and family run selling traditional Taiwanese bubble tea, you can find a range of milk teas and fruit teas on offer. If you’re feeling peckish try their bubble waffles in three sweet flavours: Nutella, Banoffee and Strawberry Cheesecake.

This September sees the 10th anniversary of what has become an annual and increasingly popular event, The Bedfordshire Walking Festival. Over the nine days from 7th to 15th September, there is a range of walks from one hour to nine hours duration, plus a range of informative walks of around 2-3 hours. Most are free and no booking is required. The festival starts on Saturday 7th with a 10k walk from Clapham. On Sunday as part of the 10th anniversary there will be a Festival tent in Priory Country park from where both a morning and afternoon walk will start, plus an opportunity for people to obtain self guided walk leaflets, information about walking groups, and the path network. On Wednesday why not take a short train ride on the Marston Vale line to Kempston Hardwick and enjoy an interesting walk back to Bedford? On Thursday at Priory a morning walk is followed in the afternoon with a trip on the John Bunyan Boat to Sovereign Quay returning by way of an informative walk about the Bridges of Bedford. The last afternoon of the festival has 10

the intriguingly entitled “Who do you think they were” starting at 1-30 at Bedford Cemetery Foster Hill Road. These are just some of the 16 walking events taking place around the town over the nine days. Further afield and celebrating our 10th anniversary, three walks based on the theme of 10 at Woburn on Saturday 7th and Sunday 15th at Ampthill Park. If your looking for a walk with a difference why not take a ride on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway or the Luton guided bus way. For the world war two enthusiast come to “Ten Shun” at Woburn on the last afternoon or to find out more about Shuttleworth and Old Warden Tuesday is the day. Several full day walks take place during the festival including the annual Greensand 40 mile Challenge taking place over the weekend of 14th & 15th. For those who are baffled by maps, confused by compasses, daunted by digital devices why not join a one day course on Sunday 8th at Maulden Village Hall. Cost £10 booking via web site. For full details of the walks visit www.bedswalkfest.co.uk contact Organiser@bedswalkfest.co.uk or pick up a programme.

INDEPENDENT LIVING SERVICES The British Red Cross empowers individuals to make their own choices, maintain independence and wellbeing.

INDEPENDENCE

Sometimes we find that we would like a little help with regaining or maintaining independence, especially when it comes to our physical and emotional wellbeing. Our Independent Living Services would like to hear from you.

WHAT WE CAN HELP WITH

We would like to hear what would help you so together we will make a plan that is specific for you and your needs. In the past the types of support our staff and volunteers have been able to help with: - Making regular phone calls, and visits, either home-visits or in the community. - After hearing about interests, we helped with finding local groups and other activities in the area - When asked we found extra information and signposted to additional services - When needed we have been able to listen to and helped to manage emotions and develop coping strategies - We have helped with transport to appointments - Assistance with letters, phone calls and bills 22

BOOK REVIE

THE DALAI L A M A’ S C AT

by David Michie

Cats are odd creatures. Like dogs they accompany us through our lives but unlike dogs they tend to remain distant members of our households. They observe us, looking on in a slightly aloof, condescending manner, always ready to remind us that we don’t actually own them. Imagine what their view of our lives and our daily discussions would be. Imagine they give us their views on life. In this novel David Michie does exactly that. What if the Dalai Lama’s cat wandered freely in and out of the rooms in his home? What would he hear within the walls of the house as the Dalai Lama entertains famous people and spiritual seekers from across the world? This delightful novel (which has spawned a trilogy) is a short read but is one that will stay with you. It is narrated by HHC (His Holiness’ Cat) and tells his life story from being a tiny kitten rescued from the streets of New Delhi, whisked away to His Holiness’ retreat in the Himalayas. He learns a lot from his new owner and sees life in a different way as a result. Described by some as a brief introduction to Buddhist philosophy, no matter what faith you are – or even if you have no faith – you will find words of wisdom in this meditative novel.

FILM REVIEW

Bromham Windows & Home Improvements

Andrew Bujalski is one of my favourite writer/ directors, even though no one is likely to have even heard of him (he has written the Lady In The Tramp remake coming next year though). He has an unusual style that generally involves a lot of story and characterisation but very little of importance actually happening. It is like jumping into someone’s life and staying there watching them for a bit and then leaving. Support The Girls is exactly this. We join Lisa (the magnificent Regina Hall) at the start of the day as she opens up Double Whammies, a ‘sports bar with curves’, and follow her as she deals with interviewing new staff, dealing with customers, helping out the girls already working for her and more.

This is a film that will pass everyone by because it is hard to define into a genre. It isn’t a comedy, but it is funny. It isn’t a drama but it has dramatic moments. There is no action at all it is just us, the viewers, looking in on the life of a woman who actually loves her job, staff and customers. This along with Booksmart & 8th Grade is one of the best films of the year.

DOGS Itchy skin conditions tend to be more common in the summer months. Affected dogs tend to scratch and lick so much that they cause further skin damage and the problem quickly gets worse. What might cause a pet to feel itchy?

ALLERGIES

FLEAS Fleas are the number one cause of itchiness in dogs. Some dogs are very sensitive to flea bites and only need one or two bites to become itchy. Others can carry a large number of fleas without seeming itchy at all. Scratching and fur loss tend to be worse on the rump, above the dog’s tail. The best way to check for fleas is to look for tiny dark flea droppings in the dog’s coat.

Dogs can be allergic to food components or to environmental allergens such as pollens and dust. It is possible to diagnose and treat food allergies with careful dietary changes. For allergies to the pollens and dusts that are all around us, it is usually necessary to use medication to relieve itching and protect the skin.

MITES

Occasionally pets will be itchy because of more complex medial conditions such as liver disease or abnormalities with the immune system. Itchy dogs should receive a health check to work out and treat the cause of any itching as quickly as possible. At Acorn House Veterinary Hospital our experienced team of vets and nurses will be happy to help you and your pet.

There are three main types of mite that can cause itchiness in dogs – demodex mange (sometimes called “red mange”), sarcoptic mange (sometimes called “fox mange”) and harvest mites. These often cause distinctive patterns of hair loss and skin discolouration and can be tested for with skin and blood tests at the veterinary surgery.

UNUSUAL CAUSES

FULL SCENT GLANDS If the scent glands just inside the bottom become blocked, dogs can feel itchy all around the hindquarters (the glands are internal so the dog cannot reach them directly). A veterinary surgeon can check these glands and empty them if necessary. To advertise with us please get in touch – christa@bedslifemagazine.co.uk

GARDENING

RECYCLE your wastewater Over the past few years I’ve been reading and researching about other sources of water too. I’m talking about grey water. But what is grey water and how can gardeners make use of it? Grey water, for those not in the know, is any kind of household wastewater apart from toilet water, which is considered ‘black water’, and which should definitely not be recycled by the average gardener. You can reclaim water from your washing machine or dishwasher, but this can prove costly and time consuming. The best advice for us amateur ecogardeners is ‘keep it simple’, especially in the first instance. Basically, this means water from the kitchen sink, the bath or shower, or paddling pool. Getting grey water to the garden is not difficult. In the case of washing-up water, simply use a removable plastic bowl in the sink which can be carried out. For baths and paddling pools ask at your garden centre or local DIY store for a water siphon hand pump. All you have to do is prime the siphon with a couple of squeezes then let the water run out into your temporary storage containers. Once you have the grey water you need to clean it before using it in the garden. This involves filtering 50

it into a large watering can through a piece of fleece or muslin to remove any debris and obvious residue. The water should then be left to cool. It needs to be used within 24 hours to prevent bacterial build-up.

Top Tips Keep it simple – It is possible to buy special kits to convert all your home’s grey water for garden-usage, but these can prove expensive. You’re more likely to try something that’s cheap and easy. If you really get into water-recycling though, then go for it! Think natural – Switch to environmentally friendly cleaning and beauty products. These are biodegradable and won’t harm your plants. Don’t forget the shower – Put the plug in when you shower, and you can save the water for the garden. Safety-first – All grey water will contain some bacteria. Use it within 24 hours but don’t use it for edible plants or for pots and containers, only on decorative border plants. Think laterally – You don’t have to restrict grey-water to garden usage. Use it to clean the car too!

GARDENING

THE BROWNTAIL MOTH (Euproctis chrysorrhoea)

Oak processionary moths (OPM) are a defoliating pest of English, Sessile and Turkey oaks (Quercus robur, Q.petraea and Q.cerris). The moths are widely distributed in central and southern Europe. In the southern countries of Europe OPM populations are controlled by natural predators, that, unfortunately do not exist in northern Europe. Consequently, OPM is now firmly established in the UK. Infestations of OPM caterpillars were first found in London in 2006.

Oak processionary moth is also a risk to human health. The older caterpillars (3rd to 6th instars) are covered in irritating hairs that contain a urticating toxin (thaumetopoein or closely related compounds). Contact with these hairs, or their inhalation, can result in skin irritation (dermatitis) and allergic reactions (rashes, conjunctivitis). If hairs are inhaled respiratory distress such as including asthma or even anaphylaxis. These problems are significant because oak processionary is often most abundant on urban trees, along forest edges and in amenity woodlands. Eggs are laid from July to early September. Each female lays between 100 and 200 eggs on twigs and small branches in the canopy. These hatch in April. Newly hatched larvae have a uniformly brown body and dark head. As they grow they lighten in colour so that, by the time they are mature, they have a grey body and dark head. These older larvae have a single dark stripe running down the middle of the back and a whitish line along each side. Clumps of extremely long white hairs arise from reddishorange pinacula along the length of the body. Less easy to see are the many thousands of short hairs that also cover the larvae. It is these short hairs that contain the irritant toxin. OPM poses a new and difficult management problem for our trees in cities. Chemical control appears to be the only current viable treatment for this pest.
