BEDFORD RUNNING FESTIVAL
The Bedford Running Festival Returns –Fitness, fun and festival vibes
Saturday, 6 and Sunday, 7 September @ Russell Park
For two days this September, the Bedford Running Festival is back and it’s bigger, better and more exciting than ever.
Not just for runners, the event brings together families, friends and the wider Bedford community in the heart of Russell Park on Saturday, 6 and Sunday, 7 September for a weekend of fitness, fun and festival vibes.
From first-timers to seasoned runners, there are five distances to choose from, so there’s something for everyone at this year’s festival. On Saturday, runners can take part in the Mini Miles Fun Run, 5K and Twilight 10K , while Sunday is host to the Half Marathon and 20-Miler
The 20-miler will start at 9:30am Sunday, so you can run the first part of the route with your buddies taking part in the half marathon. And if you really want to show off, anyone completing two races over the weekend will bag themselves some official Bedford Running Festival merch.
Runners are not just doing it for the PBs and the adulation from the crowds; plenty of participants are raising money for local charities, including Embrace, Link to Change, Road Victims Trust, Kings Arms Project, Living It Up and Access Bedford, among others.
More than just running
With the main festival celebrations taking place on Saturday, Russell Park will be transformed into a vibrant hub of live music, children’s entertainment, sports activities, and wellness zones. From a lively funfair and kids’ activities to yoga, warm-ups, and interactive experiences, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.
You’ll also find mouth-watering street food, a buzzing festival bar, and plenty of space to relax and soak up the atmosphere, whether you’re running or not.
We’re so excited to bring the festival back to Bedford. Every year we welcome thousands of people, not just runners, to celebrate everything we love about sport, music, food and our incredible local community. The festival is all about inclusion, fun and creating amazing memories.
James Shipley, MD of ATW Events
So, whether you’re lacing up your trainers, bringing the little ones for an afternoon of fun, or just fancy a chilled day out in the park with live music and great food, the Bedford Running Festival is for you.
Why did Adele cross the road? To say hello from the other side.

CAMERA IN THE COMMUNITY
New summer exhibition ‘Camera in the Community’ opens at
The Higgins Bedford
A new exhibition is running at The Higgins Bedford, showcasing the work of Bedford Camera Club. Since 1906, the club has nurtured photography enthusiasts from across the borough, providing a welcoming space to develop skills and share creative visions.
Until 5 October, Camera in the Community celebrates the rich tapestry of local life through the lens of community photographers. The exhibition highlights five diverse projects capturing Bedfordshire’s vibrant social scene - from bustling street scenes and energetic rock concerts in Ampthill to intimate portraits in local pubs, dancers from the Indian community, and traditional rush-harvesting.
We are delighted to have put together for The Higgins Bedford this exhibition of the work of club members showing the diversity and richness of those living and working in our community. We hope people will find the exhibition enjoyable and that it will stimulate an interest in photography. We welcome new members.
Jim Boud, President of Bedford Camera Club
Visitors can explore the exhibition at The Higgins Bedford, located on Castle Lane, just behind the Castle Mound from The Embankment.
Admission is free, making it an accessible cultural experience for all ages.

GREAT BEDFORDIAN
This month’s Great Bedfordian is co-founder of the Bedford Repair Cafe and general good egg, Daniel Churchill
Daniel and his wife, artist Katie Allen, have lived in Bedford for the last 10 years, initially attracted to the town by its creative community. “Best decision we’ve made,” he confirms. Since then, he has been at the heart of several projects, including the Bedford Repair Cafe which is run by volunteer fixers and aims to deflect unnecessary waste from landfill by helping Befordians learn how to ‘make do and mend’.
In his day job he’s a radio engineer and is just about to leave Bedford for a secondment to the European Space Agency in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. Hurry back, Daniel!
Name: Daniel Churchill
Occupation: Radio Engineer
Born here or blow in? I’m a Croydon boy, but have loved calling Bedford my home for the last ten years. We were drawn in by the wonderful community, and after coming back again and again for various events, we figured we should take the plunge and move in. Best decision we’ve made.
Best breakfast in Bedford? Wendover Cafe for a classic fry up (extra tasty after a big night out). Lots of treats on the deli counter too.
Best boozer? Devy! [The Devonshire Arms, Dudley Street]. Why mess with a winning formula? Great beers, roaring fire in the winter, sunny garden in the summer, and the TV gets tucked away when there’s not a game on.
Best coffee or cuppa? So many fantastic cafes in town, it’s hard to choose, but Vanilla Tree stands above the rest. What a great setting and wonderful team - and if you’re still hungry, Charlie is a magician with eggs and bagels.
Best takeaway? Santaniello’s pizza to eat in but Lee’s Kitchen on Duck Mill Lane on order. The ‘duck’ pancakes and crispy chilli ‘beef’, *chef’s kiss*
Best gig you’ve seen in Bedford? The Mill Race Folk nights were fantastic, my favourite was seeing Marisa Jack & Davy supporting Cinder Well in the chapel at Foster Hill cemetery.
Such a moody evening, it holds a special place in my heart. I think a lot of my best Bedford performances featured Marisa, Jack & Davy (at Apple Day, on the John Bunyan Boat, etc).
Ever read John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress? Mate, I’ve not even managed to get to the Pilgrims Progress pub for a drink yet.
Ever eaten a Bedfordshire Clanger? Yes, and I tell all my visitors about it! Rare commodity these days, I wish we could still get them in town.
An off-the-beaten-track gem that everyone should know about? After a lovely little walk in the sticks, past the pigs and the cows, you crest a hill overlooking the town, and find The Polhill Arms in Renhold.
You’ll be greeted with a well-earned pint and a warm welcome from Steve and Lucie. Bedfordians will know them from previous haunts at Burnaby and White Horse; they have a special talent for making a place feel homely.
Best Bedfordian? At the risk of being accused of nepotism, I have to say Katie Allen. We all know and love her, she is puts so much time into elevating people and the town. Even if you’ve not had a chance to work with her personally, you’ll recognise her influence in the joy and colour she adds to Bedford’s schools, museums and businesses.
Three words that best sum up Bedford? Up and coming.
