Throughout these pages, you’ll find inspiration from some of the town’s best independent shops and businesses, as well as a what’s on guide so you don’t miss any of the festive fun in the run-up to Christmas.
We’ve also got a spotlight on this year’s St Cuthbert’s Christmas Festival, the much-loved Christmas Tree Festival and a giveaway to win a £50 gift voucher from an independent retailer of your choice (see more details on page 19)
According to community-led campaigners, Totally Locally, around 80% of each spend in an indie goes back into the local economy. With chains, it’s around 20-30p and with online-only multi-nationals, it’s close to £0.
With that in mind, doing some or all of your Christmas shopping locally will make a huge difference to our local economy and encourage more businesses to open in Bedford.
All that remains is for us to wish all our readers a very merry Christmas and a happy new year!
Don’t forget to share your photos on Instagram of what you have bought in Bedford with #BoughtInBedford
Check out our giveaway on page 19 to win a £50 voucher. Whether it is food, drink or gift items, we can’t wait to see!
In the centre pages, you’ll find our ‘shop local’ map, ensuring that whether you’re in the town centre or taking a walk off the beaten track, you’ll find just what you’re looking for.
If you’re coming from further afield, we’ve got essential information about how to get here and where to park - you’ll be shopping like a local in no time!
Bought in Bedford is brought to you by the team behind the Bedford Clanger and the Bedford Independent. We’re passionate about sharing our love for the town and its local businesses all year round, and you can find out more at bedfordindependent.co.uk

Most of our 50,000 books are not brand new – and that’s why we love them so much. They are beautiful pieces of history covering all subjects and genres, fiction and non fiction, that have made a journey through time. Some have travelled hundreds of years and delighted generations of readers, while others are only a few months old. Some you can buy for pennies, others may cost many pounds.
What better or more thoughtful gift than to match such a treasure with a new owner? Good for the planet too.
There are so many gems to choose from, laid out in our restful and welcoming bookshop. We would love to see you as you shop for gifts this Christmas – though you may end up buying quite a few presents for yourself!

On Saturday, 6 December, the UK’s annual grassroots campaign to celebrate our fabulous indie businesses returns. Small Business Saturday highlights small business success and encourages shoppers to ‘shop local’ and support the small businesses in their communities, but shopping local is for life, not just for Christmas.
Since 2011, the Bedford Clanger has been championing the ‘shop local’ mantra, quoting the Totally Locally statistic that spending just £5 a week in your local shops could impact the local economy annually to the tune of £29m.*
And if the average person spends around £50 on a present, if all 53 million adults in the UK bought just one of their Christmas gifts from a small business, that would put an extra £2.6 billion into the pockets of indie retailers.**
But it’s not just about the money - our indie businesses improve how the borough looks - especially at Christmas (check out our Dopamine Diary on page 41 to find the best places to make your heart and dopamine levels soar). The creative efforts put into their window displays put some other shops to shame and make us proud to live here.
So, from barbers to baristas, we salute the independent businesses of Bedford. You make our town unique and we thank you for choosing to open your business here. We hope you have a wonderful Christmas, filled with happy customers and ringing tills and we look forward to working with you again next year to continue to raise the profile of Bedford as a borough town of indies.

Whether you live nearby or are coming from further afield, it’s easy to get to Bedford by car or public transport.
Shoppers and visitors can take advantage of two-hours free parking every Saturday in all council-owned town centre car parks. You can park for free all day every Sunday. The first 2 hours are free every day at Queen Street (MK40 2HA) car park.
By car: Bedford is conveniently located between the A1 and the M1 and is well served by the A421 dual carriageway, which links both major roads, as well as the A6 and A428.
By train: Bedford is served by three train services. East Midland Railway (EMR) connects with London St Pancras in just 40 minutes, while the Govia Thameslink service runs from Bedford to Brighton. Finally, the Marston Vale line operates between Bedford and Bletchley. You can check train times at trainline.com It is a short walk from the station to the town centre.
By bus: Timetables of all buses that serve Bedford Borough are available at bedford.gov.uk/businfo. Bedford Bus Station is in the heart of the town centre.
In the centre pages, you’ll find our useful map with details of many of Bedford’s independent retailers, plus car parks.
While you’re here, why not take a visit to the ‘cultural quarter’ to visit one of Bedford’s museums (the Higgins Bedford, The Panacea Museum and the John Bunyan Museum), catch a show at the Corn Exchange, Esquires, the Quarry or the Place Theatre or enjoy a winter walk along the Embankment.
Shopping can also be thirsty work and build up an appetite. Don’t forget you can refuel at one of Bedford’s many independent food and drink establishments. Find out where they are in our map & directory on page 21
Read more about arts and culture on page 19.
At Christmas, The Arc goes all out! Our little Bedford shop and cafe turns into a glittery wonderland bursting with colour, sparkle and festive mischief all wrapped in our giant pink bow.

of glitter and giggles. From baubles to stocking fillers and everything in between, The Arc is the place to find something a bit different (and probably fabulous).
Pop in, have a browse, and get swept up in the Christmas chaos — we promise you’ll leave feeling merry and bright!

Bunyan Meeting was built in 1850, and stands on the site of John Bunyan’s original church where he was minister from 1671 to 1688. Scenes from The Pilgrim’s Progress can be found on the bronze entrance doors and in stunning stained glass windows. The Basement at Bunyan is a community-oriented arts centre with a wide programme of exhibitions, workshops and activities. bunyanmeeting.co.uk

The museum tells the story of the Bedford man who wrote The Pilgrim’s Progress, one of the greatest novels in the English language. During his life, Bunyan was a soldier, tinker, preacher, and dissenter, and spent 12 years in Bedford prison for illegal preaching. bunyanmeeting.co.uk/museum

One of Bedford’s best-kept secrets, the museum tells the story of the Panacea Society, a Christian sect formed in the early twentieth century who created their own ‘Garden of Eden’ in the centre of Bedford. The Panacea Museum is located across several Victorian buildings that formed the community’s headquarters. See the historic campus, enjoy gardens and restored houses. panaceamuseum.org
St Paul’s stands at the very heart of the town, offering a haven of tranquillity. The church, open almost daily, also hosts many cultural events, including the ever-popular Christmas Tree Festival and free Tuesday lunchtime concerts. stpaulschurchbedford.org.uk

With changing floral displays, bridges in different styles, the castle mound, ice house, hotels and cafés, Bedford’s Embankment remains a jewel in the town’s crown.
Opened in July 1888, this Victorian park is a great place to relax and explore. Foster Hill Cemetery is directly to the north of the park.

Michael R Peters: Bringing Bedford the best in home appliances since 1966
If Christmas at yours means a full house, a busy kitchen and a mountain of washing-up, then having the right appliances makes all the difference. Whether you’re roasting the turkey, chilling the bubbles or catching up on festive films, Michael R Peters has you covered.
Trading in Bedford since 1966, this family business has built a reputation for outstanding customer service, expert advice, and quality products, the kind of support only a truly local retailer can offer. With their central Bedford shop and their own team of manufacturer trained staff, they’re always on hand to help you find, install and look after your appliances.
From the latest energy-efficient cookers (including self-cleaning ovens, ideal for post-Christmas clean-ups!) to washing machines, dishwashers, fridges, freezers and tumble dryers, they stock all the big brands at competitive prices thanks to their membership of
Euronics, Europe’s largest electrical buying group, they even have their own exclusive brands with warranties covering you for up to five years.
And it’s not just the essentials. Discover a full range of TVs and home entertainment systems, soundbars and smart speakers, as well as smaller appliances like kettles, toasters, and vacuum cleaners, perfect for ticking off your festive to-do list or gifting ideas.
With fast, free local delivery, expert installation, and removal of old appliances, Michael R Peters makes upgrading your home simple and stress-free. Plus, they’re proud supporters of many Bedford charities and community groups, another great reason to shop local this Christmas.
So before you press another button on a faceless online shop run by robots, call or visit Bedford’s number one independent electrical store, where real people still answer the phone and greet you with a smile. However, if you don’t like talking to real people we do have a website.

From Bedford, with love: local charities to support this Christmas
While you’re shopping local, planning nights out and wrapping presents, it’s worth remembering the people and charities working hard to make Bedford a better place for everyone this Christmas. Set up by two friends who met after being diagnosed with cancer, Above & Beyond supports those in Bedfordshire facing the same challenge, along with their families and carers, through one-to-one support, holistic wellbeing days and signposting assistance

Bedford’s Christmas Tree Festival marks 25 years of fundraising and festive joy
Wednesday, 3 - Sunday, 7 December @ St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Square
Bedford’s award-winning Christmas Tree Festival is set to celebrate its 25th anniversary this December, transforming St Paul’s Church into a festive wonderland of light, music and community spirit.
This year’s theme, ‘Christmas Past, Present and Future’, will see 70 trees decorated by local schools, community groups and businesses, alongside performances from 39 choirs and eight instrumental ensembles across five days.
St Paul’s bells will ring out to open the festival at 10.30am on Wednesday, 3 December, followed by a procession led by the Bedford Pipe Band and the official opening by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Mrs Camilla King.
Children visiting the festival will also have the chance to take part in a tree-spotting competition, with book tokens to be won. The celebrations begin on Wednesday evening with ‘Fizz at the Festival’, where visitors can enjoy drinks, canapés and the chance to vote for their favourite tree.
Tickets cost £12 and are available from fizzatthefestival@ stpaulschurchbedford.org.uk or the church office.
On Friday, 5 December, the annual Festival Concert will feature Amici Music – a 25-piece ensemble performing works by Bach, Mozart, and Vivaldi, alongside seasonal favourites.
Tickets are £25, including a glass of wine and a mince pie, and can be booked via peoplesfundraising.com/concert-tickets or by emailing festivalconcert@ stpaulschurchbedford.org.uk.
Over the past 25 years, the Christmas Tree Festival has raised more than £250,000 for Bedford Hospital Charity & Friends and St Paul’s Church.
Earlier this year, it was named Fundraiser of the Year (Team) at the Bedford Independent Everyday Heroes Awards 2024 –recognising the dedication of over 300 volunteers who help make the festival possible.
Festival organisers have thanked main sponsor Jayne Beard Associates and the many local businesses and individuals who continue to support the event.

The festival runs from Wednesday, 3 December to Sunday, 7 December at St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Square, Bedford, MK40 1SQ.
Opening hours: Wednesday to Saturday, 10am–5pm; Sunday, 12pm–4pm / Entry: £4 for adults, free for under 16s.

The Christmas season is often painted as the most wonderful time of the year, but behind all the joy and sparkle, it can also bring pressure, exhaustion, and emotional overload. Between social commitments, financial strain, and the desire to make everything “perfect,” it’s easy to forget the most important part of Christmas: YOUR Wellbeing!
When we’re busy or stressed, the brain can slip into survival mode, making us more reactive and less present. By practising small, mindful acts of self-care, you help shift your brain back into balance, toward relaxation and genuine happiness.
Start by setting gentle boundaries - You don’t need to say yes to every invitation or meet everyone’s expectations. Protect your energy by choosing what feels right for you. Breathe and pause often - Take a few moments each day to focus on slow, deep breathing or a short-guided relaxation. Hypnotherapy techniques such as visualising

a calm, safe space can instantly reduce tension and restore clarity.
Be kind to yourself - Let go of perfectionism and the pressure to meet unrealistic expectations. The small, imperfect moments often hold the most meaning.
Finally, remember that rest is not an indulgence, it’s a necessity. Taking time for stillness, reflection, or simply doing nothing allows your mind to reset and your body to restore balance.
This Christmas, give yourself the gift of compassion. When you prioritise your wellbeing, you not only feel calmer and more grounded, you radiate that peace to those around you.
