Gateway Qualifications Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science and Technology

Course Information:

Level 2 Applied Science enables students who have a keen interest in the scientific field to develop their skills and understanding. The course is intended for students who may not have achieved the required qualifications for the level 3 course in their GCSEs. Students in the past have then grown in confidence with their scientific abilities, which has enabled them to progress onto the level 3 course.

Assessment:

Level 2 Applied Science students will be assessed continuously throughout the academic year via coursework. This will be via booklets completed in class and at home.

Progression:

Student who achieve a Pass or above in this course, will be able to progress onto the BTEC Level 3 course or T-level course.

www.bedfordcollegegroup.ac.uk Tresham College – Applied Science Pearson BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science – Biomedical Science Course Information: A two-year, full-time course that meets entry requirements for learners who want to progress to HE courses in the science sector before entering employment. Learners will develop their skills and knowledge within chemistry, biology and physics as well as a chosen specialist topic such as biomedical science or forensic science. Units: Year 1: Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Science I (exam based) Unit 2 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques Unit 3 – Science Investigation Skills (exam based) Unit 4 – Laboratory Techniques and their Applications Unit 8 – Physiology of Humans Body Systems Unit 11 – Genetics and Genetic Engineering Year 2: Unit 5 – Principles and Applications of Science II (exam based) Unit 6 – Investigative Project Unit 7 – Contemporary Issues in Science (exam based) Unit 10 – Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways Unit 12 – Diseases and Infections Unit 19 – Practical Chemical Analysis Unit 20 – Biomedical Science Assessment: Level 3 Applied Science Students will be assessed via a mixture of both exam and coursework. There are 4 exams spread across 2 years with the rest of the units being assignment based. Progression: Student who Pass this course will be able to progress onto the HNC course, University courses, Level 4 apprenticeships or work. You will spend 80% of your time within college learning from experts about the core skills required for a future career within science. Then 20% of your time will be spent applying the skills within a work placement. Units: A1 – Working within the health and science sector A2 – The science sector A3- Health, safety and environmental regulations in the health and science sector A4 – Applications of safety, health and environmental practices in the workplace A5 – Managing information and data within the health and science sector A6 – Data handling and processing B1 – Core Science Concepts B2 – Further Science Concepts CS1 – Project management CS2 –Researching CS3 – Working with others CS4 – Creativity and innovation CS5 – Problem solving CS6 –Communication CS7 – Reflective evaluation Assessment: Within the first year T-level students will be assessed by examination in May/June. Within the second year assessment is assignment based. National Certificate in Applied Science (Forensic Science) Course Information: This is a widely recognised and highly valued applied science qualification that enables you to develop a range of higher-level specialist technical skills and knowledge, enabling students to meet the demands of employers in the science sector and to adapt to a constantly changing world. This programme is a specialist pathway, designed to support progression into the forensics field. Progression: Student who achieve a Pass or above in this course, will be able to progress onto the HND in Applied Science offered at the college Entry Requirement: GCSEs A*-C/ 9-4 in English and Maths/equivalent Functional skills. AND 32-48 UCAS tariff points including a Science subject. OR Science Apprenticeship Level 3 OR Science T Level OR BTEC Level 3 qualification in Applied Science OR An Access to Higher Education Diploma in Science or related subject
