Level Three Animal Management

Entry Requirements Level 3 To begin a study programme at level 3 you will need... 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C or 9-4 including English, Math’s and Science Course - 2 year duration
What happens if I don’t get the required grades? • If you do not get the grades needed for the Level 3 in animal management there are other options we can explore. • Level 2 Technical Diploma in Animal Care – 1 year full time + GCSE’s then progress onto the L3 animal management after this course. • We can discuss individual options at GCSE results day here at college

Areas of Study

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management 15 units in total over the 2 years ( 8 year 1/7 year 2) Mandatory units include: Animal Breeding and Genetics Animal Biology Animal Welfare and Ethics Practical Animal Husbandry Animal Behaviour Animal Health and Disease Work Experience in the Animal Sector Investigative Research Project Students will also study specialist units A – C (9 – 4) Only

How the course is assessed

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management

There are a range of assessment types throughout the programme, including assignments, presentations and practical assessments. There are also externally set and marked assessments for Animal Breeding and Genetics and

Animal Welfare and Ethics lasting 3 hours and a written examination for Animal Biology lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes.

The extended diploma is equivalent in size to 3 A levels and enables progression to higher education.

Up to 168 UCAS points available – enough to progress onto any degree in the UK

Practical/Theory content • This is a science based course that is focusing on the management of animals, equivalent to 3 A levels. • Mostly theory based with some practical element. 25%(Practical)/75%(Theory) split. • There is a lot of written work involved sometimes more than 1/2 assignment/s on the go at the same time.

The Zoological Education Centre

• We are proud of our resource which is divided into specialist zones housing both domestic animals and specialist zoo species.

• Humidity zone and Biome housing exotic species from tropical climates, such as frogs, lizards and our alligators.

• Rodent room housing species such as rats, chinchillas, degu, mice and gerbils

• Hot-arid zone housing desert reptiles and snakes.

• Aquatics room housing fish and turtles

• Nocturnal zone allows learners to observe and care for twilight animals.

• Exotic mammals zone provides housing for primates and small African mammals including our Binturong and Lemurs.

• Outdoor paddock zones house a herd of alpaca and various goat breeds, Miniature donkeys and our wallabies, emu and Rhea.

• Purpose-built rabbit and guinea pig village enable learners to develop their skills with these commonly kept pets.

• Birds – Macaws, Parakeets and other exotic species to work with

Different species of animals to work with

Working on the ZEC • No Jewellery – Can tape piercings that will not come out. • No Gel/False nails • No Nail Varnish – Harmful to certain species. • Hair tied back • You must have PPE to work on the ZEC – if you forget you will not be allowed on there for biosecurity reasons.

Steel toe capped boots

Equipment needed • Pens, paper and files • PPE • Overalls •
• You can buy overalls and steel toe capped boots from anywhere, Amazon, Ebay or any workwear shop (Prestige in Barton-le-clay) • They do not have to be branded for Shuttleworth and should be navy blue or another dark colour. • Boots need to have a steel toe cap and can be short or long.
Work Experience • All students will be required to complete work experience for their course, this is mandatory and forms part of your qualification • We have a work placement co-ordinator who will assist in this area. eluke@bedford.ac.uk • Wide range of placements that we work with within a 50 mile radius of the college • Zoo’s, Vets, Kennels, Catteries, Rescue Centres, Pet shops, farms and groomers plus many more!

What happens next? • An conditional offer will be made depending on the achievement of your GCSEs • Emails will start to arrive detailing information such as your offer, welcome day and enrolment onto the course. • GCSE results day-open day at college come in and discuss your grades and options with a tutor if needed

Timetables • The courses will run over 3 days a week full time at college • 2 Study days a week, this is to complete assignments and revise for exams – these are NOT days off. • Timetables will be given out on your first day. • The college day is 9am – 4.45pm.
