1. Are A1 and section front rankings set, along with story placement tags (LEDE, etc.) before the slugs?
2. Are subheads placed in the proper field?
3. Do all photos have credits? It’s problematic if a package has multiple photos but just one credit on one of the photos. At minimum, the photo set as “primary” should have a credit.
4. Are obits slugged with “OBIT” at the start of the slug?
5. Are columns slugged with “COLUMN” at the start of the slug?
6. Do columns with column sigs have a photo attached, with the photo set to presentation mode?
7. Is the photo presentation mode set to “mugshot” for photos intended to run as mugs?
8. Has the built-in AP wire feed been used to assign 4-5 filler options? Provide options with varying lengths.
9. If applicable, are A1 promos uploaded and assigned to A1?
10. If applicable, is the text-based weather information asset uploaded and assigned to A1?
ALL DONE?
Once this checklist is complete, the editor should send the assigned designer the go-ahead that their section(s) is/are ready in Presteligence.
The interactive budget via Presteligence is the sole form of a budget that designers are using to paginate sections. There is no text-based budget utilized through Presteligence pagination.

BUDGETING TOOL
• Find your edition.
• Choose pub + pub date from “Status” portal.
• Open edition.
• In top right corner, hit the three-lines menu (toggle stories panel).
• This opens the budgeting tool.
ASSIGNING STORIES
• Hit “refresh story list.”
>>> The default will show assets from the past week.
>>> For slugs, check “Use slug lines when available.”
• Filter stories by plugging in information (slug) within the “filter stories” field.
• Filter stories by plugging in the rundate (pub date) within the “rundate” field.
• To assign a story to a page, drag and drop it within the page itself.
• To view stories assigned to a page, hover over the center of the page, see what’s been assigned and how many inches are left.
• Stories from the “AP” feed can follow the same procedures.
SECTION FRONTS: SLUGS
Here’s how section front slugs should be written in BLOX to designate story placement in Presteligence.
• XXXNWS-MM-DD-YY LEDE FUNDRAISER
• XXXNWS-MM-DD-YY CENTERPIECE LIBRARY EVENT
• XXXNWS-MM-DD-YY RAIL CANDIDATE FORUM
• XXXNWS-MM-DD-YY BOTTOM GRANT APPROVAL
>>> How you slug content in BLOX is how it will appear in Presteligence.
SECTION-FRONT RANKINGS
• In the budgeting tool, select the story, click on “info.”
• The “story options” box will open for the asset.
• “Rank” your story with “1” being the most important.
• Rankings should be used on section fronts, including “sports” and “lifestyle” fronts placed in the middle of a section.
>>> This helps ensure that your lede is placed in the lede position, your bottom story is placed in the bottom position, etc.
FEEDS BUILT INTO BUDGETING TOOL
• “Stories” — Local items from TownNews, no syndication
• “AP” — Direct wire feed, not related to syndication in TownNews
AP FEED
• Categories can be selected in “AP” channel.
• Inch-count parameters can be set, and you can select whether you want photos.
All newsrooms are responsible for budgeting their own AP content — whether it’s must-run content or filler. The AP feed makes this easy.
MARKING CONTENT AS FILLER: LOCAL + AP
• To mark a story as “filler” for a particular page, select your story, assign it to a specific page, check “filler.”
>>> This will move it to the bottom of the story list for that particular page, highlighted in purple, indicating it can be used, if needed, for that page.
• To mark a story as “filler” for a particular section, select the story, click on “info,” in settings, apply the “section,” set “page” to “none.”
• To mark a story as “filler” for an entire edition, select the story, click on “info,” in settings, set “section” to “none,” set “page” to “none.”
INCH-COUNT ESTIMATES
In the budgeting tool, if you hover over a specific page ...
>>> Top line — indicates how many inches of text have been assigned to the page
>>> Bottom line — listed at the bottom.
• Inch-count estimates are configured after calculating all inch counts for stories + space taken up on the ad layer.
• Photos don’t get figured into the calculation of inch counts available.
OBITUARIES
• All obituary slugs should start with “OBIT” before the name. This applies to all pagination, whether working in BLOX or Presteligence.
• In Presteligence, all free and paid obituaries will be modular, but none of them will be boxed.
• The “presentation” mode of each obituary photo must be set to “mugshot.”
>>> If this is set in BLOX, it translates to Presteligence.
>>> If it’s not set in BLOX, it can be added in Presteligence.
COLUMNS
• All column slugs should start with “COLUMN” before the rest of the slug. This applies to all pagination, whether working in BLOX or Presteligence.
• If a columnist has a photo for a sig, it must be uploaded with the original column asset in BLOX. There are no column sig snippets in Presteligence.
• The “presentation” mode of a column sig photo must be set to “mugshot.”
>>> If this is set in BLOX, it translates to Presteligence.
>>> If it’s not set in BLOX, it can be added in Presteligence.
SHARING CONTENT WITH SISTER PAPERS
• Open your sourced asset in the story editor.
• Click on the “edit” icon in the stories panel.
• In story options, click on “edit story.”
• Rename the file in the “title” field.”
• In the editor, scroll down to the “site” column in the left channel, check the sites that you want this package to be available for.
• Story editor will make changes.
• Edits made in the content window will be specifically for that pub, that page.
VOLUME + ISSUE NUMBERS
These are automated via Presteligence.
PRESTELIGENCE: HOW ASSETS
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: A1 PROMOS
• Create an article asset in BLOX.
• Plug in the text you want in the “body copy” field.
• Attach your photo as a related asset.
• Make sure both are slugged with the “start date/time” field set.
• Find this in “Status” using the budgeting tool, assign it to A1.
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: STANDALONES
This is what’s required in order for standalones to flow into the Presteligence system.
• Newsrooms create the standalone package by creating an article asset in BLOX.
• Nothing gets placed in the body copy field of the article asset.
• The “Web headline” field of the article asset should be what you want to feed into the standalone overline box.
• Add image asset(s) through the “Related” field so that the photo(s) are child assets to the main article asset you’ve created.
• Photo cutlines and credits will import individually with each photo. No individual headers needed for each image asset.
>>> All photos should be children to the article asset. If there are multiple photos, they should all be directly related to the article asset. Photos shouldn’t be related directly to each other as child assets.
>>> If this process isn’t followed, the following will happen:
• The standalone photo(s) won’t transfer at all.
• The standalone photo(s) won’t tone.
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: ASSETS
• ARTICLES — Article assets automatically transfer from BLOX to Presteligence, so if an article has supplemental photos, they must be child assets to the article asset.
• IMAGES — Ultimately, any image asset floating in BLOX on its own — not attached as a related asset to a story and/or not attached to an article asset for standalone purposes — will be unavailable to pagination.
• IMAGES — Isolated image assets in BLOX won’t transfer to Presteligence. If a photo is uploaded to BLOX that goes with a package, and it’s floating independently, it will not transfer to Presteligence’s content manager at all.
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: PUB STATS
• Regardless if an asset is set for the “print only” workflow instead of “print and web,” the “start date/time” (pub date) must be set in the bottom left corner of each asset.
• This applies to article assets and image assets in BLOX.
• The “start date/time” field can be found in the bottom left corner of each asset. This is what feeds into search engines as the “pub date.” (If it’s “print only,” the “start date” is what’s key, and the “time” is not a factor.)
• This most often is an issue with assets that are set for “print only,” especially when they’re assets like “calendars,”“inspections,” etc. Those assets often originate from a file that was created months (or years) ago, being an asset that just gets updated and replugged.
BLOX FIELDS THAT DON’T TRANSLATE
• “Notes” field
• “Tagline” field
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: TIME FRAME
Once content is in “ready” status in BLOX, it should be available within 15 minutes in the “Status” portal for live budgeting.
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: TROUBLESHOOTING
If content isn’t reaching the “Status” portal ...
• Check your asset’s workflow in BLOX.
• Check your asset’s start date in BLOX.
Still no luck?
• Open your asset in BLOX.
• Add a space in the “Notes” field.
• Resave your asset.
BLOX > PRESTELIGENCE: SUBHEADS
• The“Subheadline” field via the “Print” tab of a BLOX asset doesn’t translate to Presteligence.
• The “Subheadline” field via the “Other” tab of a BLOX asset does translate to Presteligence.
>>> Open the asset in BLOX. > Click on “Other.” > Scroll down to “Subheadline” in the “Miscellaneous properties” menu.
ADDING SUBHEADS IN PRESTELIGENCE
• In the budgeting tool, find the asset you want to add a subhead to.
• Click on the three dots in the “info” column.
• A “story options” window will open up for the asset.
• From there, a subhead can be added to the “subhead” field. Anything plugged in here will solely appear in the print edition designed in Dynamic Production. It won’t write back to the website.
