I know this may not be a popular opinion, but I’ve always loved winter. Despite darker skies and shorter days, I find the crisp air and bright light we experience from December through until March refreshing and almost cleansing. A brisk walk across a beach or ramble through the hills feels good for the body and mind, and curling up in the warmth on an evening brings a sense of security and comfort.
This sense of indulging the mind, body and soul is certainly something you can deliver to your clients this season. Simply adding a heated blanket to your couch can turn a quick lash tint into a moment of nurture. Offer mani/pedi clients a heat cushion whilst soaking. Change up your drinks menu to include hot chocolates and gingerbread lattes and add extra textured throws, dim the lights and stream calming music to create a cosy hideaway.
Even the smallest addition to your treatment regimens can make a difference and, as someone who has very little ‘me’ time, the feeling of sinking into my therapist’s deeply quilted couch topper when I go for a brow wax is 20 minutes of bliss!
However, I’m not complaining about my busy schedule, as I’d like to share the news that, after working on a freelance basis for several years, I am delighted to have recently joined the Irish Beauty and AIT team permanently.
Melissa’s must haves

I’ve been lucky enough to work in various capacities on Irish Beauty for at least 15 years and joining the team now means we can enhance AIT’s membership benefits even further.
I feel very proud to have joined AIT part of Howden, an organisation dedicated to supporting the individuals, businesses and training providers that make our industry tick. I’m looking forward to reconnecting with many of you when Professional Beauty & Hair in partnership with Irish Beauty takes place in Dublin in April 2026, and until then our inbox is always open for your ideas and inspirations (@IrishBeautyShow).
Best wishes,

The AIT team are always on hand to answer members’ questions about your membership and insurance policy.
Here we share some common questions we often come across...
Patch testing for tinting and perming services is a strict requirement of your AIT policy and follows industry best practice.
Carrying out a patch test safeguards clients, supports professional standards and ensures that you remain covered under your AIT insurance policy.
Patch testing prior to tinting or perming helps to identify any potential allergic reactions or sensitivities before the full treatment is applied, thereby minimising risk. When conducting the patch test, it is important to follow both the training you have received and the manufacturer’s specific instructions for the products you are using.
You must always record details of patch testing on your client’s consultation card as evidence of compliance with this requirement. This includes the date of the patch test, details of the consultation process and the patch test itself plus after care advice given. This record must be kept for at least seven years. As a reminder, it is a requirement of your AIT policy to adequately record every treatment given to each of your clients.
It is also important to note that the AIT insurance policy does not accept the use of disclaimers as a substitute for patch testing. Disclaimers, such as client-signed waivers or consent forms that attempt to relinquish the need for patch tests, do not provide coverage or legal protection under the policy.
Therefore, to be fully compliant and insured, you must carry out patch tests routinely for tinting and perming treatments in line with your policy wording.

Your AIT policy covers you to deliver non-invasive treatments to minors, in this case those under the age of 16 years, if you adhere to specific requirements. These requirements safeguard both you as the practitioner and your client.
To meet the policy requirements, you must:
1. Obtain written parental or guardian consent clearly stating that the parent or guardian has been informed about the treatment and agrees to it being carried out on the minor. This must be kept with the Client Record Card.
2. Maintain and retain this Client Record Card and written consent for at least seven years after the client becomes an adult.
3. Strictly follow the product manufacturer’s age guidelines and training protocols. If the product or treatment you are offering has a specified minimum age limit, this must be observed without exception. The treatment must be performed exactly as you were trained, following best practices and professional standards to minimise any risks.
Where no age limit is provided, use your professional judgement to decide if the treatment is suitable. Consider factors such as the client’s maturity, skin sensitivity and any potential health concerns. Always communicate clearly with both the client and their parent or guardian about what the treatment involves, possible risks and aftercare requirements.
When piercing under 16’s, in addition to obtaining the written consent, the parent / guardian also needs to be present.
Following these guidelines ensures not only compliance with insurance and regulatory requirements but also prioritises the safety and wellbeing of your younger clients.

If you have a question you’d like answering, contact the AIT team on +44 1789 773573 or email us at info@aitireland.com.

Heather Hughes
By taking care of your body and posture, you’re not only investing in your own wellbeing but also in the longevity of your career, explains Heather Hughes.
BBeauty careers are deeply rewarding, but they also place unique physical demands on the body. Hours spent bending over clients, reaching for tools, or clenching the jaw in moments of concentration, for example, slowly build stress and tension, often without realising it.
Over time the nervous system adapts to these ‘work postures’ and makes them feel normal. The nervous system always looks for efficiency and it assumes this is how you want to move, so it begins locking in these abnormal postures to make them your default.
Take leaning over clients, for example. What starts as a slight forward head tilt with rounded shoulders and a collapsed chest can, with repetition, settle into your everyday posture. And the posture gets even stronger if you spend time after work in similar positions, such as using a smart phone or sitting at a computer. Now, visualise the effects over 10 years into your career and beyond. Did you picture yourself slumped over even when standing?
Regularly abnormal postures increase the resting state of tension in your body over time. This leads to muscle imbalances, pain and even reduced mobility. If left unchecked, this can go beyond physical discomfort and it can shorten career longevity. It’s not uncommon to know someone who has left their job in the beauty services industry due to chronic pain or injury.
But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be this way. With awareness and a few daily habits, you can rebalance your body and protect your career. Small, consistent actions make the biggest difference.

Here are a few simple strategies you can implement now.
Move intentionally for 15–20 minutes a day. Choose practices that undo work postures and calm the nervous system like Somatic Movement, yoga, tai chi, or any slow, mindful exercise you enjoy. If you like it, you’ll stick with it.
Optimise your workspace. Understand ergonomics principles, how they apply to your job and how to implement positive changes. For example, keep tools, products and lamps within easy reach to avoid bending or twisting. Make sure trolleys, chairs and beds move smoothly. Sometimes a simple wheel replacement or change in flooring makes all the difference.

“Your body is worth caring for as much as you care for your clients.”

Reset between every client. Just one minute helps. Jump lightly, circle your arms, twist side to side, and open and close your hands to release tension. Get blood flowing.
Think of self-care as ‘career care.’ It’s easy to dismiss self-care as optional when appointments are back-to-back and clients come first, but your body is your most important tool. You can’t deliver quality work
to your clients if your body is not optimally functioning. By taking care of your body and posture each day, you’re not only investing in your own wellbeing but also in the longevity of your career.
By understanding the role of tension and by counteracting it daily, you can protect both body and career. You and your body are worth caring for as much as you care for your clients.

Katherine Daniels Global Eye & Lip Care Age Defence Formula has been designed to treat five key signs of ageing: lines, wrinkles, puffiness, dark circles and loss of firmness.
It treats and rejuvenates both the delicate eye and lip areas with a ‘no-needle’ smoothing effect, thanks to encapsulated peptides enhanced with amino acids. Persian silk bark complex visibly reduces wrinkle depth, increases skin density and delivers a lifting, firming and smoothing effect, whilst extract of evodia rutaecarpa reduces puffiness and dark circles. Skin is immediately hydrated and nourished thanks to a conditioning complex, leaving the eye and lip areas primed and ready for makeup.
The brand recommend the formula is massaged into the skin from the socket line, around the side and beneath the brows to the orbital bone using small circles, rather than patting.

Juliette Armand has revealed Professional Exo Fusion - HA - PDRN Regeneration Therapy plus Exo Fusion Serum for home use.
Exosomes are biological nanoparticles that function as natural messengers, facilitating intercellular communication by transporting lipids, proteins, peptides, growth factors and nucleic acids between cells. Through this targeted delivery, they activate regenerative processes that promote skin repair, enhance collagen and elastin production and support overall tissue rejuvenation.
Juliette Armand uses Ameson exosomes, derived from the centella asiatica (CICA) plant, which have a structure similar to human exosomes, plus bacterial exosomes from the probiotic bacterium lactobacillus (LACTO).
The in-salon skin regeneration therapy accelerates biological cellular repair processes, synergistically with hyaluronic acid (LMW) and PDRN (Polydeoxyribonoucleotides), for enhanced skin tissue renewal. As a result, skin is hydrated, tightened and more radiant, with a visible reduction in expression lines, deep wrinkles, marks and scars, sagging and loss of skin volume and photoageing. For home use between treatments, Exo Fusion Serum combines the two types of exosomes plus peptides, nucleotides and hyaluronic acid, treating skin scarring, roughness, dehydration,

Bio-spicule microneedling treatment increases natural skin peeling
Juliette Armand has launched Apocalypsis Therapy, a bio-spicule microneedling treatment that offers medium exfoliation resulting in skin rejuvenation after seven days.
During the treatment, which has been offered in Greece for over 20 years, microscopic needle-like structures derived from freshwater sponges (spongilla, fragilis and ephydatia) gently puncture the skin’s outermost layer. This triggers the skin’s natural wound healing, in turn encouraging cell turnover, stimulating collagen production and assisting with the absorption of active ingredients.
An alternative to traditional microneedling, skin desquamation is increased to three days (from 28 days), with skin peeling/shedding for up to seven days.
Safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types, the treatment can be used to treat uneven skin tone, fine lines and wrinkles, photoageing and hyperpigmentation, acne, scarring and stretch marks.

WWhile we often encourage clients to shield their skin from the harsh effects of winter weather, controlled cold therapies, known as cryotherapy, can offer significant benefits for the face and body across all skin types.
Dermatologists have used cryotherapy since the 1960s, primarily with liquid nitrogen, to treat surface skin conditions such as benign lesions and viral warts. Today, as research continues to highlight the advantages of extreme low temperatures for common skin concerns, practices like skin icing and cryotherapy-inspired products are gaining popularity.
Such products and treatments have wide-ranging benefits. By constricting blood vessels, inflammation is calmed and puffiness reduced; the skin’s immune defences are strengthened against environmental aggressors. In addition, boosted collagen production supports elasticity and firmness whilst pores are tightened which smoothes skin texture and minimises the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
The experts in beauty and aesthetic technology at Zemits explain:
“Naturally, cold therapy has a tremendous positive impact on the skin by constricting and toning blood and lymphatic vessels. This eventually leads to improved skin immune response and helps to prevent premature skin ageing caused by skin inflammation and sun damage.
“Cold impact, in general, is well known for its positive ability to stimulate blood circulation upon contrast temperature stimulation, enhancing oxygenation and nourishing skin cells, leading to a brighter and healthier complexion.”
Skin therapists, salons and spas have access to a wide range of technologies and tools designed to deliver skin icing and cold therapies within your professional treatments. From advanced multi-functional devices to simple handheld tools inspired by ancient practices, there’s a cryotherapy solution to bring a winter glow back to client’s’ skin this season...

The iS Clinical Fire & Ice Facial combines warming and cooling sensations to rapidly resurface the skin. This advanced treatment stimulates cellular renewal, refines texture, clears and minimises pores and softens the appearance of fine lines.
Despite its intensive exfoliation, the facial leaves no residual peeling. Instead, skin feels deeply hydrated, with immediate visible results and no downtime required.
The treatment unfolds in two stages; firstly, a warming Resurfacing Masque delivers powerful exfoliation, thanks to sugar cane extract (a natural source of glycolic acid), retinol and niacinamide. This is followed by the Rejuvenating & Hydrating Masque, a cooling, refreshing blend infused with hyaluronic acid and extracts of aloe vera, grape seed, green tea, rosemary and peppermint.
To complete the experience, a tailored selection of iS Clinical’s cosmeceutical serums and creams is applied, leaving the complexion smooth, radiant and revitalised.

The CryoElegance Facial is carried out using Zemits ColdRestore CryoElegance™ technology which applies extra-low temperatures, between -4°C and +4°C, safely and promotes skin health through enhanced blood circulation, addressing common concerns including ageing, pigmentation and inflammation.

The treatment helps to tighten skin pores, reduce the appearance of fine lines and, when combined with a healthy lifestyle, targets local fatty deposits on the double chin to achieve a firmer, more sculpted result. Skin is tightened, puffiness reduced and collagen and elastin production boosted. The eye area can be lifted and firmed and the jawline sculpted and defined.
In addition, the Zemits ColdRestore CryoElegance™ device can be used in body contouring to provide a firmer and more toned appearance.
The device features a smart LED touch screen and comes with two medical grade handpieces, small for targeted facial treatments and a larger version for body therapies.

Ava Reeves explains how protecting your energy can help you make empowered decisions.

II want to talk to you about something most business owners never think about - energetics. I didn’t either, not until I found myself running a successful training academy, with staff, students and a full calendar… yet feeling completely drained inside.
On paper, everything looked perfect, but my body told a different story. I was exhausted, disconnected and forcing myself through days that no longer felt like mine.
Most business advice tells you to focus on strategy, systems, numbers, marketing. Yes, those things matter, but if your energy is leaking, your boundaries are blurred and the joy that made you start your business in the first place has faded, no amount of strategy will make it thrive.
Self-employed hair and beauty professionals know this feeling well. You give your all to your clients, post consistently on socials and keep your calendar full, yet something still feels off. That’s because your business isn’t built just on systems and structure. It’s built on you!
And that’s where energetics comes in
When I say business is 80% energetics, I’m talking about the invisible yet powerful foundation that shapes how everything flows –your energy, presence, boundaries and clarity. These directly affect how clients experience you and whether they’re drawn to your work. When your energy is aligned, your message feels magnetic and your business expands naturally.
Think about it: have you ever agreed to something that felt off, like a date with someone you didn’t find attractive? It felt heavy, forced, didn’t it? Compare that to saying yes to something that feels right, the energy flows, it’s easy, effortless. That’s alignment and your business works the same way.
Your working hours, cancellation policy and communication all reflect how you value yourself. Boundaries don’t repel people, they attract respect.
Check in with your body
Tension, fatigue or irritability aren’t “just part of the job”, they’re signs you’re misaligned. Taking a few intentional moments between clients makes a huge difference (as does making time for a lunch break which doesn’t just consist of a coffee and a biscuit!).
“Your working hours reflect how you value yourself.”
Here’s a question most people never ask themselves: You might say you want to earn a certain amount each month, but how does that figure feel for you? Don’t think about logistics or overheads, just sit with it.
That figure is your energetic cap, the level your body, mind and boundaries can currently hold. Until you expand that, you’ll keep hitting invisible ceilings. So, how do you make your business 80% energetics? Start small…

As you evolve, your “why” will too, stay connected to it. When you’re clear on your mission, decisions feel lighter and more aligned.
Practice energetic hygiene (yep, that’s a thing!)
Start your day with intention, decide how you want to feel. When your energy is calm, your actions flow effortlessly.
Once your energetics are in place, the 20% strategy, pricing, marketing, systems, lands with far more ease. You’ll make decisions from clarity, not fear. Because true success isn’t just about doing. It’s about being.
Your energy sets the ceiling for your success. Protect it, nurture it and watch your business reflect the real, aligned, empowered you.
If you want to receive daily bite-sized insights over 30 days to help you realign your energy, simplify your business and grow with ease, just message “GROWTH” to @aligningwithava on Instagram and I’ll do the rest.

Jessica Harris (nailsbyjessica.x) shares her winter ice nail art design created using gel polish, glitter gel and acrylic powder.

Step #1. Start off with a bare nail using the base colour of your choice.

Step #3. Using the same brush, drag the glitter down to the halfway point of the nail, creating an ombré effect.
Step #2. Using a 4mm nailart brush, draw a line around the cuticle using your preferred glitter gel polish.

Step #4. Once the gel polish is cured, add your top coat to the nail and let that cure for 60 seconds.
Step #5. Using a dotting tool, add two single white dots, one near the top right hand corner and one near the bottom left hand corner. Add two dots below, above and to the left and right of the centre dot. Next, add four more dots, one between each line of dots.

Step #6. Using a 20mm nail art brush, gently drag the white gel polish from the centre through the dots to form a line through every dot and create a snowflake.
Step #7. Before curing, pour a clear acrylic powder over the nail; this will stick to the white gel polish that has created the snowflake shape. Let this cure in the lamp for 60 seconds.
Step #8. Once dry, brush the nail with a soft dust brush, removing the excess acrylic powder from the nail
To create her design, Jessica used: The Beauty Empire (thebeautyempire.ie) Gel Polish in Dawn and Mystic shades, The Beauty Empire Ultra Shine Non Wipe Top Coat, Young Nails (youngnails.ie) Speed Clear acrylic powder.

The collection includes Quench leave-in spray to hydrate, detangle and protect all hair types including curls; Boost, a heat-activated gel that expands within the hair fibre to amplify volume; and Shield, a weightless spray that acts as a barrier against heat, humidity and frizz whilst sealing in moisture.
