Mentana è una terra ricchissima: l'arte e la cultura sono al centro di una cittadina che vuole essere moderna, mantenendo vive le tradizioni.

Il progetto dello scultore Alessandro Rocchi rappresenta il medesimo perfetto connubio, essendo la sua scultura contemporanea e il suo percorso artistico duraturo, solido, portatore di valori etici e di un "saper fare" tecnico.

La scelta di patrocinare la pubblicazione del catalogo è dunque in linea con la finalità di valorizzazione delle attività culturali locali per fare in modo che vengano meglio conosciute e apprezzate.

L’incontro di comuni intenti e ricorrenti pensieri tra Venanzo Crocetti e Alessandro Rocchi si è magicamente manifestato nel 2016 quando - in occasione della personale di quest’ultimo “Tra l’inconscio e il razionale” esposta nel Museo Crocetti - le loro opere si sono idealmente incontrate.

Il tratto della profondità espressiva accomuna l’arte di entrambi e parla, a chi la guarda, con un linguaggio che evidenzia un’assonante padronanza tecnica unita a un innato istinto creativo. Su queste basi il rigore delle linee scultoree e le forme plastiche del Maestro Rocchi trasformano le sue opere in figure fluide e dinamiche, caratterizzate da una serena armonia capace di un messaggio di speranza universale.

La vita artistica di Rocchi è un susseguirsi di momenti creativi nei quali il “fare” è in lui dominante e diviene necessità di vita. Dimensione già raccontata da Venanzo Crocetti nei suoi scritti, laddove riconosceva che “a sostenermi di continuo” sono “mia buona volontà e voracità del fare”.w Con alti proponimenti la Fondazione Crocetti è lieta di condividere il catalogo antologico delle opere del Maestro Alessandro Rocchi, orgogliosamente felice di questo contesto partecipativo, preludio di nuovi allacci, sedimenti e interscambi per un luminoso divenire.

The meeting of common intentions and recurrent thoughts between Venanzo Crocetti and Alessandro Rocchi magically manifested itself in 2016 when - on the occasion of the latter's solo exhibition 'Tra l'inconscio e il razionale' (Between the unconscious and the rational) at the Crocetti Museum - their works ideally met.

The trait of expressive depth unites the art of both and speaks to the viewer with a language that highlights an assonant technical mastery combined with an innate creative instinct. On this basis, the rigour of Maestro Rocchi's sculptural lines and shapes transform his works into fluid and dynamic figures, characterised by a serene harmony capable of conveying a message of universal hope.

Rocchi's artistic life is a succession of creative moments in which 'doing' is dominant in him and becomes a necessity of life. A dimension already recounted by Venanzo Crocetti in his writings, where he acknowledged that "my good will and voracity for doing" are what continually sustain me.

With these high intentions, the Crocetti Foundation is pleased to share the anthological catalogue of Maestro Alessandro Rocchi's works, proudly happy with this participatory context, a prelude to new connections, sediments and interchanges for a bright future.

Non c’è arte che più della scultura abbia saputo incarnare una primigenia sintesi tra natura e cultura. Sin dal paleolitico, l’esigenza di oggettivazione della realtà ha spinto l’individuo a manipolare le materie naturali, conferendo loro delle forme alle quali attribuire un valore simbolico. Lavorare l’argilla è forse la manifestazione più spontanea dell’impulso demiurgico proprio dell’essere umano: «l’oggetto che prende forma dalle mani si carica di un’energia che, secondo le prescrizioni rituali, attivava lo spirito all’interno della materia stessa» (Poli, 2006).

No art more than sculpture has been able to embody a primordial synthesis of nature and culture. Since the Palaeolithic age, the need to objectify reality has driven the individual to manipulate natural materials, giving them forms to which to attribute a symbolic value. Working with clay is perhaps the most spontaneous manifestation of the human being's own demiurgic impulse: «the object that takes shape from the hands is charged with an energy that, according to ritual prescriptions, activated the spirit within the material itself», (Poli, 2006).

Grazie al largo impiego della terracotta in molte civiltà e culture, sono giunti fino a noi manufatti di incredibile bellezza e valore che travalicano ampiamente le finalità d’uso alle quali erano spesso destinate. Tra Sette e Ottocento la cultura romantica, con la sua retorica dell’artista-titano, ha alimentato quello storico divario tra tecniche "nobili" – come la scultura del marmo – e altre, più vicine alle arti minori, come quella della modellazione. Così, la pratica del “togliere e aggiungere materie molli” è stata via via relegata al momento bozzettistico e alla rappresentazione aneddotico-popolare. Dal punto di vista storico-critico sarà G. C. Argan, negli anni Settanta del secolo scorso, tra i primi a elogiare la potenza espressiva dei bozzetti canoviani e la capacità del medium di assecondare l’immediatezza con cui il gesto della mano vuol dare forma all’intuizione.

Nel Novecento, secolo di avanguardie e guerre mondiali, fu Arturo Martini a restituire a questa tecnica la dignità di scultura, tentando di superare «il binomio manierismo della terracotta-intellettualismo della matrice etrusca» in nome di una rinnovata «attenzione alla materia, nei suoi valori di grana compositiva e di tonalità cromatica».

Con Martini «l’uso di materie scultoree povere (la terra, il gesso, la cera, il cemento) non è più un forzoso ripiego di fronte ai costi dei materiali nobili, ma una presa di posizione polemica contro la plastica tradizionale.» (Fergonzi, 1987). Come spiega Claudia Casali, «Il canto della materia di Martini ha certamente gettato basi teoriche e poetiche da cui provengono tutte le sperimentazioni del secondo dopoguerra. […] Egli ha concentrato in un’esistenza eccezionale gli sviluppi della scultura italiana (ed europea) del XX secolo e ha portato un significato moderno ad un materiale antico […] Ciononostante, persiste una notevole difficoltà critica nell’affrontare la dimensione “scultura ceramica”, per decenni vincolata a ottuse gerarchie di genere legate ad una presunta genialità scevra dalla tecnica.» (Casali, 2014).

Grazie alle ricerche di un Martini prima e di un Lucio Fontana poi e all’impulso dato dall’informale, la seconda metà del Novecento ha potuto vantare illustri presenze e ricerche di enorme interesse che hanno portato il linguaggio ceramico a conquistare un posto di rilievo nella complessa e accelerata evoluzione artistica seguita gli anni Cinquanta.

Thanks to the extensive use of terracotta in many civilisations and cultures, artefacts of incredible beauty and value have come down to us, far exceeding the purposes for which they were often intended. Between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Romantic culture, with its rhetoric of the artist-titan, fuelled the historical gap between 'noble' techniques - such as marble sculpture - and others, closer to the minor arts, such as modelling. Thus, the practice of "removing and adding malleables materials" was gradually relegated to the moment of sketching and to anecdotal-popular representation. From a historical-critical point of view, it was G. C. Argan who, in the 1970s, was among the first to praise the expressive power of Canova's sketches and the medium's ability to support the immediacy with which the hand's gesture wants to give form to intuition.

In the 20th century, a century of avant-gardes and world wars, it was Arturo Martini who restored the dignity of sculpture to this technique, attempting to overcome «the combination of the mannerism of terracotta-intellectualism of the Etruscan matrix» in the name of a renewed «attention to the material, in its values of compositional grain and chromatic tonality». With Martini «the use of poor sculptural materials (earth, plaster, wax, cement) is no longer a forced fallback in the face of the costs of noble materials, but a polemical stance against traditional plastic». (Fergonzi, 1987).

As Claudia Casali explains, «Martini's song of matter certainly laid the theoretical and poetic foundations from which all post-World War II experimentation came. [...] He concentrated in an exceptional existence the developments of Italian (and European) sculpture of the twentieth century and brought a modern meaning to an ancient material [...] Nevertheless, a considerable critical difficulty persists in dealing with the 'ceramic sculpture' dimension, for decades bound to obtuse hierarchies of genre linked to a presumed genius devoid of technique.» (Casali, 2014).

Thanks to the research of first Martini and then Lucio Fontana and to the impulse given by Informal Art, the second half of the 20th century could boast illustrious presences and research of enormous interest that led the ceramic language to conquer a prominent place in the complex and accelerated artistic evolution that followed the 1950s.

Alessandro Rocchi nasce nel 1951 e si forma alla fine degli anni Sessanta presso l’ex Istituto d’Arte Silvio d’Amico (ISA) di Roma. La sua identità di modellatore va definendosi tra gli anni Settanta e gli anni Ottanta ed è alimentata dal frequente scambio con l’artista beneventano Nunzio Bibbò - maestro di grande poesia e creatore di una plastica figurativa dal forte impatto corale e drammatico - che dal ‘73 fa di Roma la propria città d’elezione.

L'attività artistica di Rocchi, che diviene sistematica intorno agli anni Novanta, lo porta, in primo luogo, a ripercorrere e reinterpretare alcune fra le più significative esperienze scultoree italiane che affondano le proprie radici nell’antico. Tra i numi tutelari del suo pensiero plastico vi sono Arturo Martini e i maggiori scultori delle generazioni successive - fra cui Francesco Messina, Marino Marini, Giacomo Manzù, Venanzo Crocetti - e dalla loro lezione l’autore ha saputo interiorizzare felicemente «la ricollocazione della massa plastica nello spazio che l’avvolge, con sodezza e ampiezza di carni, con pulizia della superficie che […] ha ascendenze ora greche ora romane» (Quesada, 1989).

La sensazione che si prova osservando i lavori che rientrano sotto il nome di "Nuova figurazione" (2003-2006; 2010-2017) è proprio quella di una spiccata aderenza alla linea figurativa della scultura italiana del Novecento. Rispetto ad altri ottimi artisti della sua generazione che si sono dedicati alla produzione ceramica - si pensi, ad esempio, a Bruno Ceccobelli (1952), a Luigi Mainolfi (1948) o a Giancarlo Montuschi (1952) - Rocchi ha mantenuto intatto il richiamo alla classicità con una sorta di lealtà "seriale" nei confronti dello stile e delle iconografie dei suoi predecessori. Le sue rappresentazioni trattano i temi imperituri dell’umanità che, carichi di storia ma privi della "retorica della statua", pongono l’atto demiurgico alla stregua di una scrittura intima. Sebbene, dal punto di vista formale, non manchi una certa aspirazione monumentale, l’impiego dell’argilla e le dimensioni ridotte delle opere collocano il discorso artistico di Rocchi in una dimensione privata, domestica, quotidiana.

Come più volte affermato dall’autore, la scultura è, per lui, prima di tutto narrazione.

E la narrazione per antonomasia è quella che racconta l’essere umano nei momenti cardine del proprio percorso di vita: la solitudine meditativa, la coppia, la maternità e la

Alessandro Rocchi was born in 1951 and trained in the late 1960s at the former Silvio d'Amico Art Institute (ISA) in Rome. His identity as a modeller was defined between the Seventies and the Eighties and was nurtured by frequent exchanges with the Benevento artist Nunzio Bibbò - a master of great poetry and creator of a figurative plasticity with a strong choral and dramatic impact - who, from 1973, made Rome his city of choice.

Rocchi's artistic activity, which became systematic around the Nineties, led him first of all to retrace and reinterpret some of the most significant Italian sculptural experiences rooted in antiquity. Among the "tutelary deities" of his plastic thought, there are Arturo Martini and the major sculptors of the following generations - including Francesco Messina, Marino Marini, Giacomo Manzù, Venanzo Crocetti - and from their lesson the author has been able to successfully internalise «the relocation of the plastic mass in the space that surrounds it, with firmness and breadth of flesh, with a cleanliness of the surface that [...] has ancestry that is either Greek or Roman» (Quesada, 1989).

The sensation one has when observing the works that fall under the name of "Nuova figurazione" ("New Figuration") (2003-2006; 2010-2017) is precisely that of a marked adherence to the figurative line of 20th-century Italian sculpture. Compared to other excellent artists of his generation who have dedicated themselves to ceramic production - think, for example, of Bruno Ceccobelli (1952), Luigi Mainolfi (1948) or Giancarlo Montuschi (1952) - Rocchi has kept intact the reference to classicism with a sort of "serial" loyalty to the style and iconography of his predecessors. His representations deal with the imperishable themes of humanity which, charged with history but devoid of the 'rhetoric of the statue', place the demiurgic act on a par with an intimate writing.

Although, from a formal point of view, there is a certain monumental aspiration, the use of clay and the small size of the works place Rocchi's artistic discourse in a private, domestic, everyday dimension.

As the artist has often stated, sculpture is, for him, first and foremost a narrative.

And the narration par excellence is that which tells of the human being in the pivotal moments of his life journey: meditative solitude, the couple, motherhood and the family.

These are interdependent themes in which the intimate bond between the characters,

famiglia. Sono temi interdipendenti in cui all'intimo legame tra i personaggi, alla loro analoga condizione esistenziale si accompagna una sensazione di insondabile solitudine dell’individuo. L’opera Abbraccio (fig. a pag. 122) è forse l’unica in cui gli sguardi delle figure si incontrano creando una reciprocità poichè, normalmente, ciascuna di esse è assorta nel proprio orizzonte lontano. Infatti, se un altro momento di rara dolcezza è Conforto filiale (fig. a pag. 127), in gran parte dei lavori di Rocchi la muta vicinanza tra donna e uomo o tra madre e figlio sembra non poter colmare quella profonda solitudine. Non a caso, nel rapporto tra adulto e bambino, i momenti di gioco sono solo apparentemente spensierati e finiscono per inscenare delle perversioni infantili: in opere quali Il gioco nel sogno (fig. a pag. 130) e Viaggio (fig. a pag. 131), il bambino è come un tiranno che obbliga il genitore a rispondere alle proprie leggi senza curarsi della sua condizione psico-fisica. Così, da creatura indifesa nelle braccia della madre, l’infante si fa metafora di un bambino interiore che mette a soqquadro le stanze della nostra psiche. Non si tratta necessariamente di una figura negativa ma di una componente della nostra intricata polivocità con cui dover fare i conti, nel bene e nel male. Interessante notare come la figura materna (l’elemento femminile, lo Yin) sia la sola capace, in qualche modo, di risolvere in sé quell’egoismo infantile, riportando l’armonia.

Nelle rappresentazioni familiari di Rocchi quel che emerge è, d'altro canto, la condizione di fragili creature che abitano la terra, di animali sociali evoluti quanto basta per sviluppare un’autocoscienza che, sebbene non possa redimerli mai fino in fondo, conferisce ai personaggi quella dignità di esseri umani che è forse il significato più profondo di questo ciclo.

Dal punto di vista formale, se si escludono le dimensioni delle opere, tra i rimandi più pertinenti vi sono l’Aviatore di Martini (1931), i Cavalieri di Marini e certa ritrattistica femminile di Manzù. A tali riferimenti, Rocchi infonde una maggiore frontalità e un gusto per il trattamento della superficie in cui la resa disinvolta del modellato è impreziosita da patine che simulano le differenti finiture del bronzo.

their similar existential condition is accompanied by a feeling of unfathomable solitude of the individual. The work Abbraccio (Embrace), (fig. on p. 122) is perhaps the only work in which the gazes of the figures meet, creating a reciprocity, as each of them is normally absorbed in their own distant horizon. In fact, while another moment of rare sweetness is Conforto filiale (Filial Comfort), (fig. on p. 127), in most of Rocchi's works the mute closeness between man and woman or between mother and child seems unable to fill that deep solitude. Not surprisingly, in the relationship between adult and child, the moments of play are only apparently carefree and end up staging childish perversions: in works such as Il gioco nel sogno (The game in the dream), (fig. on p. 130) and Viaggio (Journey), (fig. on p. 131), the child is like a tyrant who forces the parent to respond to his laws without caring about his psycho-physical condition. Thus, from being a defenceless creature in its mother's arms, the infant becomes a metaphor for an inner child that turns the rooms of our psyche upside down. It is not necessarily a negative figure, but a component of our intricate polyvocity with which we must come to terms, for better or for worse. It is interesting to note how the maternal figure (the feminine element, the Yin) is the only one capable, in some way, of resolving that childish egoism within herself, bringing harmony back.

In Rocchi's family portrayals what emerges, on the other hand, is the condition of fragile creatures inhabiting the earth, of social animals evolved enough to develop a selfawareness which, although it can never redeem them completely, gives the characters that dignity as human beings which is perhaps the deepest meaning of this cycle.

From a formal point of view, if we exclude the size of the works, among the most pertinent references are Martini's Aviator (1931), Marini's Cavalieri (Knights) and certain female portraits by Manzù. To these references, Rocchi infuses a greater frontality and a taste for surface treatment in which the casual rendering of the modelling is embellished with patinas that simulate the different finishes of bronze.

Tra le possibili suggestioni storico-artistiche di cui la produzione di Rocchi è permeata, vi è anche una componente surrealista ricorrente che emerge nella serie del "Tempo Universale" (2007-2009) e si afferma con decisione proprio nel "Ciclo surrealista" (2009-2010). Tuttavia, se nel primo gruppo di opere queste "iper-visioni" allucinatorie racchiudono una forza catartica che mitiga il dramma, le opere surrealiste possiedono un'ironia a tratti irriverente e priva di pacificazione in cui, accanto a una sensazione di disagio esistenziale, emerge nuovamente il tema del bambino-tiranno del tempo e delle energie dell’adulto. In "Tempo Universale" ci si accorge che, rispetto ai lavori precedenti, l'autore si concentra maggiormente sulla mimesis, sul dettaglio descrittivo e conferisce alla composizione di un ritmo nervoso e nodoso. Tali aspetti denotano una volontà allegorica in cui le radici del passato, l’energia del presente e l’idea del futuro assumono una forma tangibile, come a voler oggettivare, attraverso un sorta di ipertrofia simbolica, le inquietudini profonde che tormentano l'essere umano.

Nel "Ciclo Surrealista", invece, le patine si tingono di una cromia vivace dal gusto pop, aprendo la strada a una serie di sperimentazioni che condurranno, di lì a poco, all’uso della tecnica raku (2010) e, qualche anno più tardi, alla multiforme e variegata serie dei bassorilievi.

Le opere realizzate da Rocchi adottando la tecnica giapponese del raku sono creazioni di grande forza poetica. Sebbene non manchi il riferimento alla figura umana - si vedano gli intensi Volti raku (fig. a pag. 192) – l’artista inizia a meditare sul potenziale evocativo dell’oggetto quotidiano come portatore di memoria. L’oggetto stesso acquista una forte carica espressiva, come se dei lontani vissuti del passato, trattenuti e sedimentati nella materia, avessero generato sulla superficie le concrezioni aspre e irregolari che caratterizzano questi manufatti. Tra le tecniche sperimentate troviamo anche alcuni esempi di raffinate terrecotte invetriate in cui torna il richiamo alla prima metà del Novecento, con interessanti riferimenti ai bassorilievi policromi di Pietro Melandri (si veda, in particolare, Natività del 1939) o ad alcune scene agresti di Aldo Ajò.

L’idea della traccia, del passaggio dell’artista che dà vita alla materia argillosa infondendole la propria energia creatrice è invece protagonista dei due bassorilievi Incontro di mani (2014) e Impronta di mani (2015), (figg. a pag. 193). Il tema delle

Among the possible art-historical suggestions that permeate Rocchi's production, there is also a recurring surrealist component that emerges in the "Tempo universale" ("Universal time") series (2007-2009) and asserts itself decisively in the "Ciclo surrealista" ("Surrealist cycle"), (2009-2010). However, if in the first group of works these hallucinatory "hyper-visions" contain a cathartic force that mitigates the drama, the surrealist works possess an irony that is at times irreverent and devoid of appeasement in which, alongside a feeling of existential unease, the theme of the child-taker of adult time and energy once again emerges. In "Universal Time" one notices that, compared to his previous works, the author concentrates more on mimesis, on descriptive detail and gives the composition a nervous and knotty rhythm. These aspects denote an allegorical will in which the roots of the past, the energy of the present and the idea of the future take on tangible form, as if to objectify, through a sort of symbolic hypertrophy, the profound anxieties that torment the human being.

In the "Surrealist Cycle", on the other hand, the patinas are tinged with a lively colour scheme in pop style, paving the way for a series of experiments that will soon lead to the use of the raku technique (2010) and, a few years later, to the multiform and varied series of bas-reliefs.

Rocchi's works made using the Japanese raku technique are creations of great poetic power. Although there is no lack of reference to the human figure - see the intense Volti raku (Faces in raku) (fig. on p. 192) - the artist began to meditate on the evocative potential of the everyday object as a bearer of memory. The object itself acquires a strong expressive charge, as if distant experiences from the past, retained and sedimented in the material, had generated on its surface the harsh and irregular concretions that characterise these artefacts. Among the techniques experimented, we also find some examples of refined glazed terracotta in which the reference to the first half of the twentieth century returns, with interesting references to Pietro Melandri's polychrome bas-reliefs (see, in particular, Nativity of 1939) or to some rural scenes by Aldo Ajò.

The idea of the trace, of the passage of the artist who gives life to the clayey material by infusing it with his own creative energy, is instead the protagonist of the two bas-reliefs Incontro di mani (Meeting of hands), (2014) and Impronta di mani (Imprint of hands),

mani dell’artista, più volte affrontato nella storia delle arti platiche come esercizio di stile simbolicamente connotato, lo ritroviamo, fra gli altri, in Rodin (Sans titre, 1900), in Agostino Pisani (Senza titolo - Mano, 1973) e in Gigi Bon (Mano d’artista, 1996), (Pluchinotta, 2019).

Nel corso del tempo, la riflessione di Rocchi si orienta verso una poetica più spensierata, incentrata sull’objet trouvé e sul colore, ben evidente nei cicli "Ultime tracce" (2014) e "Mutazioni" (2014-2015). Da notare come, sebbene il primo tenda a rimanere in un interstizio tra la scultura e l’assemblaggio, il secondo elabora con accresciuta consapevolezza un complesso insieme di esperienze derivanti dall'informale, con esiti piuttosto inaspettati. Prelevato dal flusso della vita quotidiana, l'oggetto è prima collocato su una sgargiante base di terracotta - circondato da impronte della sua stessa forma - ("Ultime tracce") e poi "superato", disciolto in una texture di motivi simil-geometrici, di tracce seriali non figurative o di segni-colore che, di volta in volta, bilanciano o assecondano la matrice espressiva del corpo ceramico ("Mutazioni").

Alcuni di questi passaggi fanno venire in mente quei bronzi di Kengiro Azuma dei primi anni Sessanta in cui i pattern di suggestione industriale diventano espedienti formali che insistono su superfici sofferenti. Così, in Rocchi, gli oggetti prima e i segni poi, affrontano l'impresa di acquisire e organizzare lo spazio nella speranza di ottenere il controllo su di esso.

Concepite nell’ambito della stagione scultorea italiana tra il 1960 e il '65, alcune note critiche di Andrea B. Del Guercio offrono interessanti spunti che ben si adattano anche alla serie rocchiana delle "Geometrie" (pag. 78), derivata da "Mutazioni" ma da esse profondamente diversa. Qui, infatti, «l’atto espressivo è assoggettato alla volontà di costruire e di edificare secondo una grammatica formale controllata e quindi attraverso azioni di redazione rispondenti ad una cultura analitica» (Del Guercio, 1977): Rocchi è un costruttore che non può fare a meno di tornare alla concreta realtà, sia essa incarnata dalla figurazione, dall’oggetto di uso quotidiano o dall’adozione di composizioni non figurative ma fortemente organizzate in termini di alternanza delle superfici e costruzione dell’impaginato.

The theme of the artist's hands, which has been addressed several times in the history of the plastic arts as a symbolically connoted exercise of style, can be found, among others, in Rodin (Sans titre, 1900), in Agostino Pisani (Senza titolo - Mano, 1973) and in Gigi Bon (Mano d'artista, 1996), (Pluchinotta, 2019).

In the course of time, Rocchi's thinking is oriented towards a more carefree poetics, centred on objet trouvé and colour, clearly evident in the cycles "Ultime tracce" ("Last traces"), (2014) and "Mutazioni" ("Mutations"), (2014-2015). It should be noted that, although the former tends to remain in an interstice between sculpture and assemblage, the latter elaborates with increased awareness a complex set of experiences deriving from the informal, with rather unexpected results. Taken from the flow of everyday life, the object is first placed on a garish terracotta base - surrounded by imprints of its own form - ("Last traces") and then "surpassed", dissolved in a texture of simil-geometric motifs, of serial traces that are no longer figurative or of signs-colours that, from time to time, balance or support the expressive matrix of the ceramic body ("Mutations").

Some of these passages bring to mind Kengiro Azuma's bronzes from the early 1960s in which the patterns of industrial suggestion become formal expedients that insist on suffering surfaces. Thus, in Rocchi's work, first the objects and then the signs tackle the task of acquiring and organising space in the hope of gaining control over it.

Conceived within the context of the Italian sculptural season between 1960 and '65, some critical notes by Andrea B. Del Guercio's critical notes offer interesting ideas that are also well suited to Rocchi's "Geometrie" ("Geometries"), (p. 78), derived from "Mutations" but profoundly different from them. Here, in fact, «the expressive act is subject to the will to construct and build according to a controlled formal grammar and therefore through editing actions responding to an analytical culture» (Del Guercio, 1977): Rocchi is a builder who cannot help but return to concrete reality, whether it is embodied in figuration, in the object of everyday use or in the adoption of nonfigurative compositions but strongly organised in terms of alternation of surfaces and construction of the layout. Although "Last traces" presents itself «as a rebus: one of those texts where the actual concepts are replaced by images, which exist not for their

Sebbene "Ultime tracce" si presenti «come un rebus: uno di quei testi dove gli effettivi concetti sono sostituiti da immagini, che esistono non per sé stesse, ma per essere interpretate nel contesto generale» (Lucie-Smith, 2007), in questi lavori rimane fin troppo diretto il riferimento al Nouveau Réalisme e, in particolare, alle Accumulations di Arman. Diversamente, in "Mutazioni" Rocchi è riuscito a elaborare un connubio inatteso tra lezione informale, riflessioni proto-concettuali e un colorismo sgargiante, pop e vivacemente decorativo, nell’accezione virtuosa del termine. Negli ultimi lavori, infine, fa ritorno la figura, sia in chiave ironica e favolistica (Mutazioni n. 155) sia in versione caricaturale e “anti-graziosa” (Mutazioni n. 117), (figg. a pag. 186).

Tra il 2016 e il 2017, esauritasi la fervida parabola dei bassorilievi, la narrazione della vicenda umana torna alla ribalta e, con lei, la dimensione tridimensionale della scultura.

Sono anni in cui Rocchi tocca dei momenti apicali del proprio percorso artistico, sia nella resa formale, sia nella scelta dei temi. Oltre ad alcuni esemplari afferenti alla "Nuova figurazione", appartengono a questa fase le due serie "Ancestrali" e "Luoghi della psiche".

"Ancestrali" (2016) è in assoluto tra i cicli più intensi ed evocativi da lui realizzati. Dal punto di vista tecnico il linguaggio è eminentemente fittile e non mancano suggestioni poveriste nell’esclusività di una materia grezza, primitiva e anti-decorativa. Alla resa anatomica più riconoscibile dei primi personaggi – la figura singola, la coppia o il gruppo – segue una lavorazione sempre più scabra e meno individuata, tanto da dare l’impressione che le figure si stiano trasformando in rocce, come a volersi eternare ricongiungendosi alla terra da cui provengono (fig. a pag. 75). La suggestiva ambiguità di queste opere si situa in una sottile linea di confine tra il reperto archeologico (vengono in mente gli impressionanti corpi delle vittime dell’eruzione vesuviana) e l’infusione stessa dell’anelito vitale, come se si trattasse di giovani anime appena venute alla luce.

Queste sculture esprimono con sorprendente forza iconica il ciclo della vita e della morte e sono in grado di trasmettere quello che possiamo davvero definire un «senso di mistero primordiale» (Poli, cit.).

own sake, but to be interpreted in the general context» (Lucie-Smith, 2007), in these works the reference to Nouveau Réalisme remains all too direct, particulary to Arman's Accumulations. On the other hand, in "Mutations", Rocchi has managed to develop an unexpected combination of informal lesson, proto-conceptual reflections and a flamboyant, pop and brightly decorative colourism, in the virtuous sense of the term.

Finally, in his latest works, the figure makes a comeback, both in an ironic and fablelike key (Mutazioni - Mutations n. 155) and in a caricatured and "anti-graceful" version (Mutazioni - Mutations n. 117), (figs. on p. 186).

Between 2016 and 2017, after the fervid parable of the bas-reliefs had come to an end, the narration of human events returned to the fore and, with it, the three-dimensional dimension of sculpture. These were years in which Rocchi reached the pinnacle of his artistic career, both in his formal rendering and in his choice of themes. In addition to some pieces belonging to the "New figuration", the two series "Ancestrali" ("Ancestral") and "Luoghi della psiche" ("Psyche Places") belong to this phase.

"Ancestral" (2016) is probably one of his most intense and evocative cycles. From a technical point of view, the language is eminently clay-like and there is no lack of poverist suggestions in the exclusivity of a raw, primitive and anti-decorative material.

The more recognisable anatomical rendering of the first figures - the single figure, the couple or the group - is followed by an increasingly rough and less identifiable workmanship, so much so as to give the impression that the figures are turning into rocks, as if to eternalize themselves, reuniting with the earth from which they came (fig. on p. 75). The suggestive ambiguity of these works lies on a fine line between the archaeological find (the impressive bodies of the victims of the Vesuvius eruption come to mind) and the very infusion of vital yearning, as if they were young souls just coming to light. These sculptures express the cycle of life and death with surprising iconic force and are able to convey what we can truly call a «sense of primordial mystery» (Poli, cit.).

If the "Ancestral" series pays homage to Nunzio Bibbò's "Ancestral Landscapes" and "Assemblies" (1980s-1990s), in "Psyche Places" (2017) Rocchi seems to be inspired

(anni ’80-’90), nei "Luoghi della psiche" (2017) Rocchi sembra ispirarsi alle strutture di città del maestro, conferendo loro una maggiore individuazione e un rinnovato sapore metafisico. Lo struggente richiamo a Giacometti dello scultore beneventano assume in Rocchi un’ascendenza a tratti dechirichiana ma meno inquieta e di grande e poesia, in un lento oscillare tra malinconia e tenerezza. Come fossero prosceni, il nostro sguardo si insinua nelle pieghe di quei micro mondi, facendoci percepire il respiro, i bisbigli, le speranze di chi li abita.

Un paio d’anni dopo, nel 2019, l’artista porta avanti due cicli tra loro assai diversi per temi e per stile: si tratta di "Ruggine" e di "Le urne dei ricordi".

In "Ruggine", Rocchi lavora sulla simulazione di leghe metalliche di uso industriale per creare l’illusione di trovarsi innanzi a degli oggetti caratterizzati da superfici e consistenze del tutto diverse da quelle reali. Da questo lavoro "illusionista" derivano due gruppi di opere di cui il primo è fondamentalmente astratto mentre il secondo è puro trompe l’oeil, con momenti ironico-surreali caratterizzati dalla presenza umana. Se le levigate strutture tubolari rimandano a un’estetica di matrice concreto-costruttivista con ascendenze biomorfe di gran gusto ed eleganza, le catene presentano accenti più marcatamente esistenziali. Così, mentre la "ruggine" che le ricopre ci parla dell'indomito passaggio del tempo, nella simulazione di pesantezza e ineluttabile vittoria della forza di gravità vi è un richiamo evidente alle catene della condizione umana. In alcuni lavori, alle "ferraglie" astratte sono associate delle piccole figure che sembrano rendere esplicito il ragionamento precedentemente espresso, connotandolo di sottile ironia.

Nell’opera Ruggine n. 22 (fig. a pag. 178), infine, tali strutture diventano ambientazione architettonica, acquisendo una più speranzosa valenza di abitabilità come luogo di un possibile intreccio di relazioni.

In "Le urne dei ricordi", Rocchi sviluppa più nitidamente il tema della memoria e del passaggio del tempo, con una puntuale citazione dell’antico. L’urna cineraria, che necessariamente si lega alla consapevolezza della morte, esprime la prerogativa umana di dover convivere con essa. Tuttavia, se anche i ricordi possono morire, questa serie esprime con poesia - e con un modellato sapiente e disinvolto – la necessità di

by the master's city structures, giving them greater individuation and a renewed metaphysical flavour. The "beneventano" (from Benevento) sculptor's poignant reference to Giacometti takes on in Rocchi an ascendancy that is at times dechirican but less restless and great and poetic, in a slow oscillation between melancholy and tenderness. As if ther were a prosceniums, our gaze insinuates itself into the folds of those micro-worlds, making us perceive the breath, the whispers, the hopes of those who inhabit them.

A couple of years later, in 2019, the artist continued with two cycles that differed greatly in theme and style: "Ruggine" ("Rust") and "Le Urne dei ricordi" ("The Urns of Memories"). In "Rust", Rocchi works on the simulation of metal alloys for industrial use to create the illusion of objects with surfaces and textures that are completely different from the real ones. This "illusionist" work gives rise to two groups of works, the first of which is fundamentally abstract while the second is pure trompe l'oeil, with ironic-surreal moments characterised by the presence of humans. While the polished tubular structures refer to a concrete-constructivist aesthetic matrix with biomorphic ascendants of great taste and elegance, the chains present more markedly existential accents. Thus, while the "rust" that covers them speaks to us of the indomitable passage of time, in the simulation of heaviness and the ineluctable victory of the force of gravity there is an evident reference to the human condition's chains. In some works, small figures are associated with the abstract "irons", which seem to make the previously expressed reasoning explicit, imbuing it with subtle irony. Finally, in Ruggine - Rust n.

22 (fig. on p. 178), these structures become an architectural setting, acquiring a more hopeful value of habitability as a place of a possible interweaving of relationships.

In "The Urns of Memories", Rocchi develops the theme of memory and the passage of time more clearly, with a ponctual citation of antiquity. The cinerary urn, which is necessarily linked to the awareness of death, expresses the human prerogative of having to live with it. However, even if memories can die, this series expresses with poetry - and with a skilful and nonchalant modelling - the need to nourish the memory of the moments that have shaped our life and our history, because eternity resides in it.

Nel 2020 entriamo, nostro malgrado, in epoca pandemica e nei difficili momenti di preoccupazione e isolamento tra le mura domestiche, Rocchi concepisce un nuovo ciclo scultoreo concettualmente coerente con i temi del tempo e della memoria ma formalmente del tutto singolare. In "Geometrie laviche" l’artista torna a interrogare l’oggetto e l’esplicitazione della materia plastica, ancora una volta nell’ottica del bassorilievo. Ritroviamo l’objet trouvé delle "Ultime tracce" ma, a differenza di quest’ultimo, esso è ora consunto, vetusto e chiede di essere contemplato per come appare prima ancora che per ciò che racconta. Vengono meno la dimensione del rebus e dell’aneddoto in favore di una vera e propria fascinazione nei confronti della struttura dell’oggetto, della sua forma e, in seconda istanza, della storia che lo sottende, rendendolo iconico. Esso affiora da un fondo frastagliato di stucco colorato che, progressivamente, assume una sempre maggiore autonomia pittorica. L’oggetto diventa, così, la materia stessa di cui si l'opera si compone, in un gioco che è ora geometrico-compositivo, ora di morbidi e raffinati passaggi cromatici. Vi è anche una declinazione del tema in cui il medesimo discorso è sviluppato in chiave tridimensionale (Geometrie laviche n. 32) e un'altra in cui l’oggetto diventa “a funzionamento simbolico” (Geometrie laviche n. 26), (figg. a pag. 175), in omaggio alla più immaginifica scultura surrealista (si pensi alla Boule suspendue di Giacometti, 1930-31).

Ancora del 2020 è l’elegante serie "Uomini con animali", che vede un dialogo inedito tra linguaggio figurativo - di nuovo alla ribalta - e un uso del colore anti-mimetico di ascendenza neo-pop, sebbene il riferimento primario rimangano gli anni Trenta del secolo scorso. Ciò si evince dalla resa asciutta e dall’attitudine solenne delle figure, particolarmente evidente in Uomo e bambino a cavallo (fig. a pag. 51), che fa venire in mente alcune ceramiche di Angelo Biancini, allievo di Libero Andreotti (si pensi ad Atteone divorato dai cani, 1939-40). Fatta eccezione per il forte erotismo della Donna con cavallo (fig. a pag. 48), il tema epico dell'uomo che domina l'animale e il riferimento

In 2020 we enter, against our will, the pandemic era and in the difficult moments of worry and isolation within the walls of the home, Rocchi conceives a new sculptural cycle that is conceptually consistent with the themes of time and memory but formally quite singular. In "Geometrie laviche" ("Lava Geometries"), the artist returns to question the object and the explication of the plastic material, once again from the perspective of bas-relief. We find again the objet trouvé of "Ultime tracce" but, unlike the latter, it is now worn, old and asks to be contemplated for what it appears to be rather than for what it tells. The dimension of the rebus and the anecdote have disappeared in favour of a real fascination with the structure of the object, its form and, secondly, the story behind it, making it iconic. It emerges from a jagged background of coloured stucco which gradually takes on greater pictorial autonomy. The object thus becomes the very material of which the work is composed, in a game that is now geometric-compositional, now of soft and refined chromatic passages. There is also a declination of the theme in which the same discourse is developed in a three-dimensional key (Geometrie laviche - Lava Geometries n. 32) and another one in which the object becomes "symbolically functional" (Geometrie laviche - Lava Geometries n. 26), (figs. on p. 175), in homage to the most imaginative surrealist sculpture (think of Giacometti's Boule suspendue, 193031).

The elegant series "Uomini con animali" ("Humans with Animals") dates back to 2020 and features an unprecedented dialogue between the figurative language - once again in the limelight - and an anti-mimetic use of colour with a neo-pop influence, although the primary reference is still the 1930s. This can be seen in the dry rendering and solemn attitude of the figures, particularly evident in Uomo e bambino a cavallo (Man and Child on Horseback), (fig. on p. 51), which brings to mind certain ceramics by Angelo Biancini, a pupil of Libero Andreotti (e.g. Actaeon devoured by dogs, 1939-40).

With the exception of the strong eroticism of Donna con cavallo (Woman with Horse) (fig. on p. 48), the epic theme of the man dominating the animal and the reference to a rural or sporting dimension seem to reinforce the reference to the heroic tone of that season. And yet, on closer inspection, the artist inserts some iconographic details

a una dimensione ora campestre, ora sportiva, sembrano rafforzare il richiamo al tono eroico di quella stagione. Eppure, a ben vedere, l’autore inserisce alcuni dettagli iconografici - come le presenze infantili nella Donna con cavallo e nell’Auriga con carro di buoi (fig. a pag. 49) o l’atteggiamento "umanizzato" del cavallo della Ginnasta (fig. a pag. 50) – che risultano incoerenti e vagamente surreali, ribaltando l’economia della composizione e il suo significato in una chiave decisamente anti-celebrativa. Notiamo, così, il volto assente della ginnasta, l’ironia dell’auriga che guida un carro trainato da buoi e la presenza, anch’essa ironica e disturbante, di un bambino che fa capolino nel momento di profferta della femme fatale. È proprio questo tentativo di ribaltare gli stereotipi e di giungere all’essenza delle forme a condurre Rocchi ai suoi lavori più recenti, realizzati nel corso del 2021. Se già ai tempi degli "Ancestrali" s’intuiva un’esigenza di sintesi plastica in cui le figure sono come riassorbite all'interno del ciclo geologico, nella serie "Pietre silenti" l’artista porta questo discorso alle estreme conseguenze, realizzando composizioni di ciottoli in argilla e patinandoli come sassi levigati. Queste opere riflettono sia sul biomorfismo di Jean Arp e di Henry Moore - in cui le pietre sono forme ambigue e vitali -, sia sui colossi di Stonehenge. Si avverte, in queste strutture allungate, aggregate tra loro come gruppi di persone, un raccordo tra l’artista e la “pura forma” delle pietre in quanto fonte primaria di ispirazione. Per dirla con le parole di Francesco Poli: «il principio archetipico sta alla base di tutte le forme fenomeniche nelle quali si manifesta, come loro arché, cioè come loro origine, come qualcosa di più semplice ed essenziale […] il ritorno all’elemento arcaico va inteso come un ritorno all’essenza della natura stessa.» (Poli, cit.). Tra i possibili messaggi di cui queste opere sono portatrici, vi è anche un appello al "fare comunità", al darsi reciprocamente coraggio, restando uniti nell'affrontare le avversità della vita poiché solo in questo modo potremo sopravvivere ai capricci della storia.

L’atemporale, l’arcaico e il connubio tra natura e civiltà sono gli elementi alla base della serie "Pietre silenti": fin dove si spingerà l’estro creativo di Rocchi? A noi, non resta che aspettare di scoprirlo.

- such as the childish presences of the Woman with Horse and the Auriga con carro di buoi (Charioteer with Oxen Cart), (fig. on p. 49) or the "humanised" attitude of the Gymnast's horse (fig. on p. 50) - that are incoherent and vaguely surreal, overturning the economy of the composition and its meaning in a decidedly anti-celebratory key.

Thus we note the absent face of the gymnast, the irony of the charioteer driving an oxcart and the presence, also ironic and disturbing, of a child who peeps out at the moment when the femme fatale offer herself.

It is precisely this attempt to overturn stereotypes and get to the essence of forms that leads Rocchi to his most recent works, produced during 2021. If already at the time of the "Ancestral" works there was a need for plastic synthesis in which the figures are as if reabsorbed within the geological cycle, in the "Petre silenti" ("Silent Stones") series the artist takes this discourse to its extreme consequences, creating compositions of pebbles in clay and patinating them like polished stones. These works reflect both on the biomorphism of Jean Arp and Henry Moore - in which stones are ambiguous and vital forms - and on the colossi of Stonehenge. One senses, in these elongated structures, joined together like groups of peoples, a connection between the artist and the "pure form" of the stones as a primary source of inspiration. In the words of Francesco Poli: «the archetypal principle lies at the basis of all the phenomenal forms in which it manifests itself, as their arché, that is, as their origin, as something simpler and more essential [...] the return to the archaic element should be understood as a return to the essence of nature itself». (Poli, cit.). Among the possible messages conveyed by these works the is also a call to 'make community', to give courage each other, to remain united in facing the adversities of life because only in this way can we survive the vagaries of history.

The timeless, the archaic and the union between nature and civilisation are the elements underlying the "Silent Stones" series: how far will Rocchi's creative flair go? We just have to wait and see.

Conversazione con Alessandro Rocchi

Maestro Rocchi, ci parli della sua formazione artistica.

Ho conseguito il diploma di Maestro d’Arte Applicata e la maturità artistica, all’Istituto d’Arte Silvio d’Amico di Roma nel 1971, con la specializzazione in architettura e arredamento. Mia madre, Silvana Risuleo, era un’eccellente pittrice di matrice divisionista e mio nonno, Arturo Risuleo, era direttore d’orchestra … insomma, radici creative!

Per vivere ho fatto anche altro ma non potevo disattendere le mie inclinazioni e, con impegno, nel corso del tempo ho sempre continuato a perseguirle.

I primi contatti con la materia li ho avuti proprio all’Istituto d’Arte, nei laboratori di lavorazione del legno e del gesso. Il contesto era molto stimolante e mi ha dato gli strumenti per fare emergere e canalizzare il mio potenziale espressivo.

Ho sempre fatto letture sull’arte e, con il tempo, ho acquisito il mio personale bagaglio visivo e culturale, gettando le basi una ricerca profonda, fatta di solide radici. Tra gli artisti avevo pochi amici sinceri e, attraverso lo scambio di idee e sperimentazioni, ho costruito la mia identità espressiva. In special modo, frequentando assiduamente il caro amico e maestro Nunzio Bibbò, ho imparato ad amare la modellazione e sono entrato in contatto con artisti dell’entourage del pittore Ennio Calabria.

Come è approdato alla scultura e in che modo l'argilla è diventata il suo medium d’elezione?

Inizialmente mi sono dedicato alla pittura e ho realizzato dipinti figurativi legati al realismo ma senza adeguarmi a una corrente in particolare. Sicuramente ho avvertito da subito una forte esigenza narrativa ma non disdegnavo di abbandonarmi a suggestioni surrealiste o geometrico-cubiste.

Conversation with Alessandro Rocchi

Maestro Rocchi, tell us about your artistic training.

I obtained my diploma as Master of Applied Art and my artistic maturity at the Silvio d'Amico Art Institute in Rome in 1971, specialising in architecture and interior design.

My mother, Silvana Risuleo, was an excellent divisionist painter and my grandfather, Arturo Risuleo, was a conductor... in short, creative roots!

I have done other things for a living, but I could not ignore my inclinations and, with commitment, I have always continued to pursue them over time.

I made my first contacts with materials at the Art Institute, in the woodworking and plaster workshops. The context was very stimulating and gave me the tools to bring out and channel my expressive potential.

I have always done reading on art and, over time, I acquired my personal visual and cultural background, laying the foundations for a deep research with solid roots.

Among artists, I had a few sincere friends and, through the exchange of ideas and experimentation, I built my expressive identity. In particular, by assiduously frequenting my dear friend and teacher Nunzio Bibbò, I learned to love modelling and came into contact with artists from the entourage of painter Ennio Calabria.

How did you come to sculpture and how did clay become your “medium of choice”?

Initially, I dedicated myself to painting and made figurative paintings linked to realism but without conforming to any particular current. I certainly felt a strong need for narrative right from the start, but I did not disdain abandoning myself to surrealist or geometric-cubist suggestions.

Successivamente, ho fatto amicizia con il maestro vasaio Lorenzo De Luca, che aveva un laboratorio artigiano a Monterotondo. Fu lui a introdurmi alla modellazione dell’argilla e gliene sarò per sempre grato anche perché, grazie ai suoi insegnamenti, capii che plasmare la materia sarebbe stata la mia strada.

Per Michelangelo, scolpire consisteva nel levare il superfluo dal marmo, perché dentro quel blocco risiedeva già l’opera. Al contrario, usando un materiale malleabile, il procedimento è profondamente diverso. L’ “amica argilla” - così mi piace chiamarla per il lungo tempo in cui mi tiene compagnia e perché asseconda le mie angherie - mi consente un’interazione diretta e totalizzante con la materia: la plasmo, la torco, la modifico… fino a che non arrivo al punto in cui capisco che posso fermarmi perché l’opera è in grado di restituirmi quello che ho voluto infondergli.

Lei ricopre i suoi lavori con una variegata tipologia di patine. Con quale criterio sceglie questo o quel rivestimento cromatico e che ruolo attribuisce al colore?

Nella scultura, la modellazione la fa da padrona. I vuoti e i pieni si avvicendano, che sia astratta o figurativa, essa si appropria prepotentemente dello spazio. Le patine svolgono un ruolo fondamentale e offrono un’enorme ricchezza di possibilità in base al risultato che si vuole ottenere. È facile sminuire un’opera con la patina sbagliata!

Nel caso particolare del ciclo "Mutazioni", estroflessioni, incisioni e lacerazioni conferiscono una valenza fortemente espressiva al modellato ma il colore lo qualifica in maniera unica e irripetibile, trasmettendo al manufatto la giusta energia e personalità.

Ho sperimentato a lungo anche la tecnica ceramica ed è senza dubbio interessante patinare le terrecotte con smalti e cristalline in seconda cottura. Ma nel fare pratica mi sono accorto che queste patine nascondono gli effetti tridimensionali della terracotta e ne soffocano i dettagli. Ho quindi preferito impiegare i colori acrilici che mi permettono un’infinita libertà operativa. Posso così spaziare da effetti di forte contrasto a sfumature leggere, colorando le opere nei modi più disparati.

I later made the friendship of master potter Lorenzo De Luca, who had a workshop in Monterotondo. He was the one who introduced me to clay modelling and I will always be grateful to him, also because, thanks to his teachings, I understood that shaping the material would be my path.

For Michelangelo, sculpting consisted of removing the superfluous from the marble, because the work was already inside that block. On the contrary, using a malleable material, the process is profoundly different. My “friend clay” - this is what I like to call her because of the long time she keeps me company and because she indulges my anxieties - allows me a direct and total interaction with the material itself: I shape it, twist it, modify it... until I reach the point where I understand that I can stop because the work is able to give me back what I wanted to infuse it with.

You cover your works with a variety of patinas. How do you choose this or that colour coating and what role do you attribute to colour?

In sculpture, modelling is the master. Empties and solids alternate, whether abstract or figurative, it takes over the space. Patinas play a fundamental role and offer an enormous wealth of possibilities depending on the desired result. It is easy to belittle a work with the wrong patina!

In the particular case of the "Mutations" cycle, evertings, incisions and lacerations give a strongly expressive value to the modelling, but the colour qualifies it in a unique and unrepeatable way, giving the work the right energy and personality.

I have also experimented extensively with the ceramic technique and it is undoubtedly interesting to patinate the terracotta with glazes and crystals in the second firing. But as I practised, I realised that these patinas hide the three-dimensional effects of the terracotta and suffocate the details. I therefore preferred to use acrylic colours, which give me infinite freedom of action. I can range from high-contrast effects to subtle nuances, colouring the works in a variety of ways.

Nei suoi lavori vi sono frequenti ed espliciti riferimenti a molti importanti artisti del Novecento, con un forte richiamo alla Metafisica e alla linea figurativa della scultura italiana del secolo scorso. In quale relazione ideale si pone nei confronti di questi “numi tutelari”? Quali sono gli elementi di “rottura” e differenziazione rispetto a questa tradizione, che sente come fondativi del suo personale percorso?

Nel mio lungo percorso creativo ho assimilato e omaggiato le opere di quegli autori che ho sentito più affini alla mia sensibilità, dai quali ho in qualche modo ereditato alcuni accenti espressivi. Mi riferisco soprattutto a Giacomo Manzù, Marino Marini ed Henry Moore. Non sono però mancati assidui studi delle opere di Arturo Martini, Fracesco Messina e Alberto Giacometti. Amo molto anche le compressioni di César, le accumulazioni di Arman e, in generale, l’interpretazione dell’oggetto di uso quotidiano propria del Nouveau Réalisme.

Tuttavia, al di là delle possibili citazioni, nei miei cicli scultorei ho individuato un linguaggio del tutto personale in cui ho voluto esprimere i miei contenuti attraverso scelte stilistiche sempre in divenire. Inoltre, per me la scultura è narrazione. Che si tratti di una riflessione dalla forte connotazione esistenziale (come in "Tempo universale") o di un sentire più brioso e dinamico (come in "Mutazioni") il racconto di una storia, di un vissuto emotivo e psicologico è sempre l’elemento scatenante e il fulcro dell’opera.

A dominare tutto questo è però il senso del tempo. Il tempo che scorre inesorabile e rivela la nostra condizione di finitezza.

La coppia, la maternità, la famiglia e il ruolo stesso della figura umana, nella sua progressiva perdita di fisionomia, sono i temi a cui si è dedicato maggiormente. Cosa può dirci a riguardo?

Probabilmente ci sono dei fattori inconsci che mi riconducono spesso a questo tema, forse esperienze infantili o conflitti interiori ma queste questioni le lascio ai professionisti del settore!

In your works there are frequent and explicit references to many important artists of the 20th century, with a strong reference to Metaphysics and the figurative line of Italian sculpture of the last century. What is your ideal relationship with these “tutelary deities”? What are the elements of “rupture” and differentiation with respect to this tradition that you feel are fundamental to your personal path?

In my long creative path, I have assimilated and paid homage to the works of those artists who I have felt closest to my sensitivity, from whom I have somehow inherited certain expressive accents. I refer above all to Giacomo Manzù, Marino Marini and Henry Moore. However, I also have studied regulary Arturo Martini, Fracesco Messina and Alberto Giacometti's works. Nevertheless, I love César’s compressions, Arman’s accumulations and, in general, Nouveau Réalisme’s interpretation of the everyday object.

However, beyond the possible quotations, in my sculptural cycles I have identified an entirely personal language in which I wanted to express my contents through stylistic choices that are always in flux. Moreover, for me sculpture is narration. Whether it is a reflection with strong existential connotations (as in "Universal time") or a more lively and dynamic feeling (as in "Mutations"), the telling of a story, of an emotional and psychological experience, is always the trigger and the focus of the work. What dominates all this, however, is the sense of time. Time that flows inexorably and reveals our condition of finiteness.

The couple, motherhood, the family and the role of the human figure, in its progressive loss of physiognomy, are the themes to which you have dedicated most of your time. What can you tell us about this?

There are probably unconscious factors that often lead me back to this theme, perhaps childhood experiences or inner conflicts, but but I leave these matters to the professionals!

Madre e figlio sono la rappresentazione per antonomasia della vita stessa! Sono il simbolo della continuità del genere umano, l’essenza della creazione. D’altra parte, tra madre e figlio non c’è solo amore, possono esservi conflitti e incomprensioni perfino insanabili. Spesso i protagonisti delle mie opere hanno i volti smarriti o lo sguardo perso in un altrove. Così, anche quando celebro la vita, esprimo il senso d’incertezza e la caducità delle cose umane.

Che ruolo assume, invece, l’astrazione?

L’astrazione in sé è un’espressione che mi allontana dal contatto con le cose reali perciò non la amo particolarmente. Il mio lavoro è frutto di una ricerca costante e in continua evoluzione e l’aspetto estetico non è che una conseguenza del mio sentire. Il ciclo delle "Mutazioni", come pure le "Geometrie laviche", sono lavori in cui la lezione dell’informale, con la furia creativa che ha introdotto nel modo di fare arte, assume un ruolo centrale. Giunto alla realizzazione dell’opera mi sento esausto e la materia trattiene le cicatrici di questa lotta, quando non finisce a terra sotto i colpi degli utensili.

Eppure, rispetto agli anni in cui esplose la corrente informale, non è un senso di rabbia e di orrore a guidarmi, bensì un’energia generatrice, un desiderio di vita. Nel mio ultimo ciclo, "Pietre silenti", l’apparente natura astratta delle opere nasconde, a ben vedere, un intento fortemente narrativo e umanizzato.

Devo però confessare che provo una certa attrazione per il potenziale estetico del colore materico e della superfice scabra. E chissà che in futuro non mi lascerò tentare nuovamente da questo linguaggio!

Vi sono dei cicli o dei lavori ai quali è più legato e altri con i quali è maggiormente in conflitto?

Ciascun ciclo che ho realizzato è figlio del proprio tempo. Sono periodi che durano, generalmente, due o tre anni. Ci sono dei lavori che considero, più che altro, esercizi di tecnica e di stile e ci sono le opere a cui ho affidato molto della mia poetica come,

Mother and child are the quintessential representation of life itself! They are the symbol of the continuity of the human race, the essence of creation. On the other hand, there is not only love between mother and child, there can be conflicts and misunderstandings that are even irremediable. Often the protagonists of my works have lost faces or look lost elsewhere. So, even when I celebrate life, I express the sense of uncertainty and the transience of human things.

What role does abstraction play?

Abstraction is an expression that distances me from contact with real things, so I don’t particularly like it. My work is the result of constant and constantly evolving research, and the aesthetic aspect is merely a consequence of my feelings. The "Mutations" cycle, as well as the "Lava Geometries", are works in which the lesson of Informal Art, with the creative fury it introduced into the way of making art, takes on a central role.

When the work is finished, I feel exhausted and the material retains the scars of this struggle, when it does not end up on the ground under the blows of the tools. And yet, compared to the years when the Informal movement exploded, it is not a sense of anger and horror that drives me, but a generating energy, a desire for life. In my latest cycle, "Silent Stones", the apparent abstract nature of the works conceals, on closer inspection, a strongly narrative and humanised intent.

However, I must confess that I feel a certain attraction for the aesthetic potential of the material colour and the rough surface. And who knows, maybe in the future I won’t be tempted by this language again!

Are there cycles or works to which you are most attached and others with which you are most in conflict?

Each cycle I have made is a child of its time. They are periods that generally last two or three years. There are works that I consider, more than anything else, exercises in technique and style, and there are works to which I have entrusted much of my poetics,

ad esempio, il ciclo "Tempo universale", nel quale ho ragionato sulla compresenza di passato, presente e futuro in un’unica dimensione.

Nella serie "Ancestrali" le sembianze delle figure, arse e corrose da lacerazioni di un tempo lontano, appaiono come fossili superstiti di un’epoca arcaica, fissati nella loro postura, come immobilizzati. Nelle "Geometrie laviche" inserisco alcuni oggetti del passato in una materia magmatica, capace di donare loro una nuova vita di natura contemplativa.

La serie più recente, "Pietre silenti", nasce nel momento in cui, dopo lunghi mesi di emergenza sanitaria da pandemia, si iniziava a percepire un barlume di speranza. Ho provato la sensazione di vedere le cose rianimarsi, come una luce che illuminasse tutto di nuova vita. Anche i ciottoli, materia eterna e inanimata, sembravano risvegliarsi da un lungo sonno. Accompagnato dall’amica argilla, ho iniziato a plasmare forme levigate e astratte che, via via, acquisivano una sempre maggiore energia espressiva al punto da entrare in dialogo tra di loro, somigliando sempre più a esseri umani. Volendo portare questa intuizione alle estreme conseguenze, ho persino aggiunto ad alcune di queste “pietre” alcuni piccoli segni di umanità, come un accenno di capelli, i seni e i connotati.

Non so dove mi porterà questo percorso ma, per adesso, me ne lascio inebriare con entusiasmo.

Come si pone rispetto agli artisti italiani della sua generazione?

Tra gli artisti Italiani della mia generazione vi sono senza dubbio degli ottimi creativi che sono riusciti ad affermarsi ma ce ne sono anche molti altri che, nonostante il loro valore, fanno fatica a essere riconosciuti dal grande pubblico. Tuttavia penso che, in un modo o nell’altro, siamo tutti figli delle intuizioni formali della prima metà del Novecento, da Boccioni, Balla, Modigliani e Picasso fino al grande Lucio Fontana. Tra le figure a cui sono maggiormente affezionato, per la loro maestria ma anche per la loro umanità, vi sono Igor Mitoraj, con le sue opere maestose, e il caro amico e maestro Nunzio Bibbò, con cui ho sempre alimentato un vivace scambio di idee ed esperienze.

In the "Ancestral" series, the features of the figures, burnt and corroded by the lacerations of a distant time, appear like surviving fossils of an archaic era, fixed in their posture, immobilised. In "Lava geometries" I insert some objects from the past into a magmatic material, capable of giving them a new life of a contemplative nature.

The most recent series, "Silent Stones" was created at a time when, after months of pandemic health emergencies, there was a glimmer of hope. I felt the sensation of seeing things come back to life, like a light illuminating everything with new life.

Even the pebbles, eternal and inanimate matter, seemed to awaken from a long sleep.

Accompanied by my friend clay, I began to shape smooth and abstract forms which gradually acquired more and more expressive energy to the point of entering into dialogue with each other, looking more and more like human beings. Wanting to take this intuition to the extreme, I even added some small signs of humanity to some of these ‘stones’, such as a hint of hair, breasts and features. I don’t know where this path will take me but, for now, I am letting myself be inebriated with enthusiasm.

How do you compare to the Italian artists of your generation?

Among the Italian artists of my generation, there are undoubtedly some excellent creatives who have succeeded in establishing themselves, but there are also many others who, despite their value, struggle to be recognised by the general public.

However, I think that, in one way or another, we are all children of the formal intuitions of the first half of the 20th century, from Boccioni, Balla, Modigliani and Picasso to the great Lucio Fontana. Among the figures I am most fond of, for their mastery but also for their humanity, are Igor Mitoraj, with his majestic works, and my dear friend and master Nunzio Bibbò, with whom I have always nurtured a lively exchange of ideas and experiences.

A che punto è la scultura oggi?

Da molti anni è ormai venuta meno quella coralità di esperienze artistiche che un tempo faceva da collante tra i creativi, generando accordi e disaccordi, dibattiti e scambi di ogni tipo. Oggi come oggi, ognuno ragiona per sé e questo ha causato un forte inaridimento della vita artistica e culturale sia nelle città, sia nei piccoli centri. Un tempo l’artista era spesso militante o comunque politicamente coinvolto e, con i suoi lavori, contribuiva a una causa dal valore sociale e collettivo. Questo meccanismo si è ridotto a pochi interventi individuali o a strategici accordi di mercato in cui lo status symbol conta spesso più della qualità delle opere e della ricerca degli artisti. Molti scultori delle nuove generazioni, pur di emergere e acquisire consenso, realizzano opere di forte impatto scenografico ma mi viene il sospetto che, al di là dello stupore momentaneo, del loro passaggio non rimarrà traccia. Eppure, la scultura è sempre viva!

Where does sculpture stand today?

For many years now, the chorus of artistic experiences that used to bind creative people together, generating agreements and disagreements, debates and exchanges of all kinds, has disappeared. Nowadays, everyone thinks for themselves and this has caused a strong drying up of artistic and cultural life both in the cities and in small towns.

Once upon a time, the artist was often militant or at least politically involved and, with his work, contributed to a cause of social and collective value. This mechanism has been reduced to a few individual interventions or strategic market agreements in which status symbols often count more than the quality of the works and the artists’ research.

Many sculptors of the new generations, in order to emerge and gain consensus, create works of great scenic impact but I suspect that, beyond the momentary astonishment, no trace will remain of their passage. And yet, sculpture is always alive!

Senza dubbio Giorgio Bertozzi

Alessandro Rocchi non si mette mai in evidenza, anzi se può tende a nascondersi, ma fortunatamente l’uomo e l’artista non sfuggono all’attenzione di chi apprezza la spontaneità e la genuinità. È comunque bene precisare subito che genuino e spontaneo, nel caso di Alessandro, Uomo e Artista, sottintendono, neanche tanto velatamente, la predisposizione a comunicare in modo essenziale, onesto, senza fraintendimento, senza mediazione, senza dubbio. Le sculture di Alessandro si mostrano con lo stesso vigore con cui un giovane affronta la vita, le guardi una ad una e ti sembra di assistere alla presentazione di una immensa collezione delle opere degli scultori di ogni tempo, dagli anonimi del periodo classico ai grandi del cinque/settecento fino ai moderni per arrivare ai contemporanei. Personalmente la presentazione a cui ho “assistito” é andata a ritroso nel tempo partendo da un’opera molto evocativa della produzione di Igor Mitoraj procedendo con forme in stile Rodin, intrecci alla Cellini, complessità alla Bernini, volumi michelangioleschi, drappeggi e trasparenze della scuola di Fidia.

Insomma anche per Alessandro Rocchi, come per ogni artista contemporaneo, si può parlare di una produzione figlia di altri padri, anzi per dirla tutta figlia di molti padri.

Con altrettanta chiarezza va detto che un’unica madre ha generato queste forme: la capacità plastica e creativa di Alessandro e del suo genuino e spontaneo modo di essere e di creare. Già, creare, questa è la grande magia dello scultore che con i suoi gesti, la sua sapienza, mille e mille volte ripete quanto descritto nel più antico dei Libri, dove, il Creatore, modella l’Uomo trasferendogli vita ed anima con il proprio fiato.

L’umanità ha conservato memoria del prodigio creativo. Già nell’antica Grecia si era arrivati alla considerazione che se l’Uomo era l’immagine del Divino non si poteva che tendere alla perfezione nel rappresentare con la scultura, regina delle arti, la figura umana, il ragionamento, la caparbietà e i tanti fattori che la storia ben ci descrive, hanno contribuito alla realizzazione di capolavori assoluti, per tutti: i Bronzi di Riace e la Venere di Milo. Con la scultura l’omaggio al divino è proseguito ininterrotto nel tempo e negli stili e tanto più “l’omaggio” è spontaneo, genuino, tanto più ha valore. Diventa istintivo desiderare le genuine sculture di Alessandro Rocchi, pensarle nel proprio luogo di lavoro, nella propria abitazione, la loro presenza ci ricorda tutto questo... in silenzio.

Alessandro Rocchi never puts himself in the limelight; if he can, he tends to hide, but fortunately the man and the artist do not escape the attention of those who appreciate spontaneity and genuineness. However, it should be made clear that genuine and spontaneous, in Alessandro’s case, Man and Artist, imply, not even so subtly, the predisposition to communicate in an essential, honest way, without misunderstanding, without mediation, without doubt.

Alessandro’s sculptures are shown with the same vigour with which a young man faces life; you look at them one by one and it seems as if you are witnessing the presentation of an immense collection of works by sculptors of all ages, from the anonymous ones of the classical period to the great ones of the sixteenth/eighteenth century to the modern ones and on to the contemporaries. Personally, the presentation I “witnessed” went back in time, starting with a very evocative work by Igor Mitoraj and proceeding with Rodin-style forms, Cellini-style intertwining, Bernini-style complexity, Michelangelo-style volumes, drapery and transparencies from the school of Phidias. In short, for Alessandro Rocchi too, as for every contemporary artist, we can speak of a production that is the daughter of other fathers, or rather the daughter of many fathers. It must be said just as clearly that a single mother has generated these forms: Alessandro’s plastic and creative capacity and his genuine and spontaneous way of being and creating. Yes, creating, this is the great magic of the sculptor who, with his gestures, his knowledge, a thousand and a thousand times repeats what is described in the most ancient of Books, where the Creator models Man, transferring life and soul to him with his own breath. Mankind has preserved the memory of the creative prodigy.

Already in ancient Greece, people had come to the conclusion that if Man was the image of the Divine, they could only strive for perfection in representing the human figure through sculpture, the queen of the arts. Reasoning, stubbornness and the many factors that history has described so well have contributed to the creation of absolute masterpieces, for all of them: the Riace Bronzes and the Venus of Milo. With sculpture, homage to the divine has continued uninterrupted through time and styles, and the more spontaneous and genuine the ‘homage’, the more valuable it is. It becomes instinctive to desire Alessandro Rocchi’s genuine sculptures, to think of them in one’s place of work, in one’s home, their presence reminds us of all this... in silence.

Il Fare - La scultura come necessità di vita Plasmare, è per questo scultore romano, un’insopprimibile necessità di vita. Nell’osservare il suo “fare” artistico vediamo l’artista e l’artigiano alternarsi nell’operare. Alessandro Rocchi, non delega ad altri la finitura delle opere, come fanno molti, ma, dall’inizio alla fine, segue e domina le sue produzioni che raggiungono a risultati di plastica eleganza.

Rocchi non prescinde dalla tradizione antica e mette a frutto tutta la sua ventennale esperienza. Le sue creazioni, solide e compiute, ma nello stesso tempo delicate e leggere, ricordano per alcuni tratti la tradizione antica; in particolare le testimonianze delle sculture etrusche del Lazio e non solo. La sua vita artistica si articola in un susseguirsi di momenti creativi nei quali il “fare”, pur mantenendo una coerenza rappresentativa, si sviluppa in diverse direzioni. Dalle prime opere naturalistiche ed espressioniste, si passa ad altri momenti estetici ai quali l’artista ha dato dei nomi specifici che ne contengono, in nuce, le istanze. Ma quello che conta è comunque il fare. Alessandro non è un artista pigro, anzi la sua creatività lo porta a sperimentare forme e momenti altri. Le sue mani viaggiano nell’operare come in una sorta di trance nella quale realizza le sue figure.

Il “fare” è dunque in lui dominante; solo dopo l’artista arriva a ricercare significati e concetti che spesso prescindono dalla sua stessa insopprimibile esigenza di creatore.

Rocchi sottolinea la fatica del fare. La sua scelta, infatti, è quella di non abbandonarsi soltanto alla mera espressione del bozzetto iniziale, ma di ricercare soluzioni ultime che soddisfino la sua anima. Nell’operare artistico, quello che lega l’uomo e l’artista al divino e al trascendente, è sicuramente la creazione pura come funzione dell’essere. Questa operazione non è scevra di lotte per il raggiungimento dello scopo. Questa battaglia, che ha in se esperienze a volte anche mistiche, non può prescindere dall’impegno e dal sacrificio. L’artista è ben cosciente che non basta la cosiddetta “ispirazione” per realizzare delle opere d’arte. L’opera non si crea da sola, c’è bisogno dell’esperienza e della volontà, della capacità costante di perseguire uno scopo; è necessario operare con

To Make - Sculpture as a necessity of life For this Roman sculptor, shaping is an irrepressible necessity of life. Observing his artistic “making” we see the artist and the craftsman alternating in their work.

Alessandro Rocchi does not delegate the finishing of his works to others, as many do, but follows and dominates his productions from start to finish, achieving results of plastic elegance. Rocchi does not disregard the ancient tradition and uses all his twenty years of experience. His creations, which are solid and complete, but at the same time delicate and light, are reminiscent of ancient tradition in some respects; in particular, the evidence of Etruscan sculpture in Lazio and elsewhere. His artistic life is articulated in a succession of creative moments in which the “doing”, while maintaining a representative coherence, develops in different directions. From the first naturalistic and expressionist works, he moved on to other aesthetic moments to which the artist gave specific names that contain, in nuce, the instances. But what counts is still the doing. Alessandro is not a lazy artist; on the contrary, his creativity leads him to experiment with other forms and moments. His hands travel as if in a sort of trance in which he creates his figures. The “doing” is therefore dominant in him; only later does the artist come to seek meanings and concepts that often go beyond his own irrepressible need to create. Rocchi emphasises the effort of doing. His choice, in fact, is not to abandon himself to the mere expression of the initial sketch, but to seek ultimate solutions that satisfy his soul. In artistic work, what links man and the artist to the divine and the transcendent is certainly pure creation as a function of being.

This operation is not without its struggles to achieve the goal. This struggle, which at times has mystical experiences within it, cannot do without commitment and sacrifice.

The artist is well aware that so-called ‘inspiration’ is not enough to create works of art. A work of art does not create itself, it needs experience and will, the constant ability to pursue a goal; it is necessary to work with daily humility to achieve the final

umiltà giornaliera per arrivare al risultato finale. Queste istanze, formano il fulcro e il portato di un “fare” che, nel caso di Alessandro Rocchi, dopo tanta fatica, si rivela solo alla fine in tutta la sua ineguagliabile poesia.

La Materia Alessandro Rocchi e la terracotta, un binomio che non si può scindere Le scelte del “fare” si configurano spesso come esperienze totali nelle quali l’artista, di volta in volta, si mette a disposizione della “materia”. E’ spesso lei che comanda e che detta le sue regole; l’artista è volutamente sottoposto alle sue necessità, anche espressive e linguistiche. La scelta dell’uso di un materiale piuttosto che un altro ha un significato profondo, che mette in luce l’”animus” del creatore. La creta è un materiale duttile, che però ha bisogno di sequenze precise di realizzazione. La freschezza del tocco, la possibilità di un modellato veloce e sostanziale sono solo una parte del lavoro, che successivamente si estrinseca in passaggi tecnici precisi e obbligatori. La creta non concede sconti. Se la realizzazione non è perfetta si crepa e si rompe. La scelta di questo materiale è dunque una scelta difficile, come quella dell’acquerello in pittura, che una volta realizzato non permette ripensamenti, cosa che avviene in altre tecniche come la tempera o l’olio. Le opere in creta sono quindi non modificabili.

Dopo la formatura del pezzo avviene l’asciugatura e quando la materia è sufficientemente solida, ma non asciutta, avviene lo svuotamento e infine la cottura. Rocchi, nel suo studio di Mentana, utilizza un forno personale, che gli permette completa libertà. La leggerezza e la resistenza dell’opera finita dipende da queste antichissime regole. Le fasi dell’azione sono tutte rigorosamente rispettate e consentono risultati ottimali.

Successivamente si procede alla patinatura semplice, che consente dipreservare la creta dalla sua stessa fragilità. Nel caso di Alessandro, questo è un momento importante che gli consente un’ulteriore modificazione della materia usata. Egli, infatti, sperimenta a volte diverse e originali patinature che permettono di trasformare la creta nella mimesi di altri materiali, come bronzo, pietra o ceramica. Una tecnica antica, che produce risultati affascinanti. La scelta di questo artista di operare con la creta è dunque sintomo di una sua volontà d’immediatezza e freschezza della figurazione, ma anche di una volontà personale di confrontarsi con una materia difficile che solo la tenace volontà dell’uomo riesce a dominare.

The Matter Alessandro Rocchi and terracotta, a combination that cannot be separated The choices of “making” are often configured as total experiences in which the artist, from time to time, puts himself at the disposal of “matter”. It is often the material that commands and dictates its rules; the artist is deliberately subjected to its needs, including expressive and linguistic needs. The choice of the use of one material rather than another has a profound meaning, which highlights the “animus” of the creator.

Clay is a ductile material, but it needs precise sequences of realisation. The freshness of the touch, the possibility of a quick and substantial modelling are only a part of the work, which is then expressed in precise and obligatory technical steps. Clay does not grant discounts. If the work is not perfect, it cracks and breaks. The choice of this material is therefore a difficult one, like that of watercolour in painting, which once made does not allow for second thoughts, as is the case with other techniques such as tempera or oil. The works in clay are therefore not modifiable.

After the piece is formed, it is dried and when the material is sufficiently solid, but not dry, it is emptied and finally fired. Rocchi uses his own kiln in his studio in Mentana, which allows him complete freedom. The lightness and strength of the finished work depends on these ancient rules. The stages of the action are all rigorously respected and allow optimum results. The next step is simple patination, which preserves the clay from its own fragility. In Alessandro’s case, this is an important moment that allows him to further modify the material used. In fact, he sometimes experiments with different and original patinas that allow him to transform clay into the mimesis of other materials, such as bronze, stone or ceramic. An ancient technique that produces fascinating results. The choice of this artist to work with clay is therefore a symptom of his desire for immediacy and freshness of figuration, but also of a personal desire to deal with a difficult material which only the tenacious will of man can master.

Lo stile e la struttura delle immagini Le raffinate sculture di Alessandro Rocchi si caratterizzano per le linee rigorose e i volumi fortemente plastici. Le posture variate e originali, propongono visioni di quieta serenità che rappresentano il principale attributo del linguaggio dell’artista. La dinamica relazionale tra donne e uomini racconta un mondo di atmosfere rarefatte, dove la drammaticità dell’essere è sempre ricondotta alle leggi di una serena armonia; dove il sottile erotismo che permea i corpi si riconduce alle esperienze e alle radici antiche della nostra cultura. L’intreccio di linee compositive non è mai fine a se stesso e la torsione, talvolta estrema, o l’allungamento delle membra alla maniera di Giacometti, si contrappunta a momenti di contenuta semplicità e ritorno al realismo. Liriche e commoventi alcune sculture di donne assise che, come per le immagini arcaiche e solenni della Mater Matuta, comunicano con il mondo arcano che è in ognuno di noi. Il peso corporale suggerito dai grandi arti ben modellati ci ricorda la scultura romanica di Wiligelmo o di Benedetto Antelami. Rocchi ci consegna una produzione scultorea ricca d’interesse, in quanto originale e personalissima, ma legata e supportata dalle memorie della tradizione.

I contenuti e le tematiche Le scelte intellettuali portano l’artista verso tematiche di tipo umano e sociale che ha scelto come struttura del suo fare: dalle creazioni naturalistiche, alle esperienze surrealiste; da quella che egli ha definito Nuova Figurazione, al Ritorno alla Natura e al Tempo Universale, delle ultime opere. Quello che si nota è la sua effettiva coerenza rappresentativa che supera restrizioni e schemi concettuali. Dominante è in quest’artista la necessità di rappresentare la figura umana, la coppia, la mamma col bambino, che divengono di volta in volta emblema del mondo, dell’amore, della tenerezza, del distacco e dell’incomunicabilità dell’essere. Figure fluide e dinamiche, ma anche solide e corpose come una scultura altomedievale. L’allungamento dei volti alla Modigliani, che trovavamo in un gruppo di opere appartenenti alla serie “ Nuova Figurazione”, diventa nelle recenti opere del “Tempo Universale”, meno estremizzato. Il corpo si fa più solido, i volti esprimono delicati sentimenti e simboliche, semplici emozioni. Ma la necessità di creare

The style and structure of the images Alessandro Rocchi’s refined sculptures are characterised by rigorous lines and strongly plastic volumes. The varied and original postures propose visions of quiet serenity that represent the main attribute of the artist’s language. The relational dynamics between men and women tell of a world of rarefied atmospheres, where the drama of being is always brought back to the laws of a serene harmony; where the subtle eroticism that permeates the bodies goes back to the experiences and ancient roots of our culture. The interweaving of compositional lines is never an end in itself, and the sometimes extreme twisting or elongation of the limbs in the manner of Giacometti is contrasted with moments of restrained simplicity and a return to realism. Some of the sculptures of seated women are lyrical and moving and, like the archaic and solemn images of Mater Matuta, communicate with the arcane world within each of us. The bodily weight suggested by the large, well-modelled limbs reminds us of the Romanesque sculpture of Wiligelmo or Benedetto Antelami. Rocchi gives us a sculptural production that is rich in interest, as it is original and highly personal, but linked and supported by the memories of tradition.

Contents and themes The intellectual choices lead the artist towards human and social themes that he has chosen as the structure of his work: from naturalistic creations to surrealist experiences; from what he has defined New Figuration to the Return to Nature and Universal Time of his latest works. What is noticeable is his effective representational coherence that overcomes restrictions and conceptual schemes. Dominant in this artist is the need to represent the human figure, the couple, the mother and child, who become from time to time the emblem of the world, of love, tenderness, detachment and the incommunicability of being. Figures that are fluid and dynamic, but also solid and full-bodied like an early medieval sculpture. The Modigliani-like elongation of the faces, which we found in a group of works belonging to the “Nuova Figurazione” series, becomes less extreme in the recent works of “Tempo Universale”.

The body becomes more solid, the faces express delicate feelings and symbolic, simple emotions. But the artist’s need to create does not stop, and he intervenes

Vediamo le grate che formano nelle membra, spazi altri dai quali s’intravedono figure. L’uso di materiali esterni ma naturali, come rami e piante, rendono particolarmente originali queste creazioni. Interessante soffermarsi su un elemento che attraversa tutta la produzione di Alessandro Rocchi a diversi livelli. Si tratta delle “mani”.

Le sue incredibili mani, che sembrano spuntare dal nulla e diventano carezza o monito al di fuori del tempo e dello spazio reali. Esse sono uno dei loghi importanti e fondamentali di quest’artista.

L’emozione e il messaggio Raccontare il mondo per mezzo di un uomo, una donna o di un bambino, è un espediente per meditare sulla storia. Alessandro si sforza di rappresentare un mondo universale e contemporaneo che è però inserito nel tempo e che di esso coniuga tutti gli aspetti. L’Infante, dall’aspetto ineffabile di certe divinità antiche, è spesso presente nelle ultime produzioni e rivela una scelta precisa. Il bambino che guarda il presente, ma che nella sua stessa natura si proietta nel futuro, è un simbolo del nostro tempo, a volte disincantato e apparentemente senza speranza. Non è questa la posizione del nostro autore, che nel futuro crede. E’ proprio questo il messaggio di Alessandro Rocchi. Mediante la testimonianza delle sue opere positive e maternamente ricche di emozione, si configura un quadro nuovo per questo nostro difficile mondo.

L’artista ci consegna un bene da far fruttare in futuro, ci consegna un bimbo da crescere, da plasmare verso realtà semplici e buone legate agli affetti familiari. L’opera di Rocchi è dunque un monito e un auspicio che evidenzia la volontà di trasmettere un messaggio di speranza universale.

We see the grids that form in the limbs, other spaces from which figures can be glimpsed. The use of external but natural materials, such as branches and plants, make these creations particularly original. It is interesting to dwell on an element that runs through all of Alessandro Rocchi’s production at different levels. It is the “hands”. His incredible hands, which seem to come out of nowhere and become a caress or a warning outside real time and space. They are one of the important and fundamental logos of this artist.

Emotion and message Telling the world through a man, a woman or a child is a way of meditating on history. Alessandro endeavours to represent a universal and contemporary world that is nevertheless embedded in time and combines all its aspects. The infant, with the ineffable appearance of certain ancient divinities, is often present in the latest productions and reveals a precise choice. The child who looks at the present, but who in his very nature projects himself into the future, is a symbol of our time, at times disenchanted and apparently hopeless. This is not the position of our author, who believes in the future. This is precisely Alessandro Rocchi’s message. Through the testimony of his positive and maternal works, full of emotion, a new picture is configured for this difficult world of ours. The artist gives us an asset to be put to good use in the future, he gives us a child to grow up, to be moulded towards simple and good realities linked to family affection. Rocchi’s work is therefore a warning and an omen, underlining his desire to convey a message of universal hope.

Bassorilievi e concrezioni della memoria Alessandra Cesselon

La sezione dei bassorilievi suddivisi in due distinte tipologie denominate “Le Mutazioni” e “Le Tracce” presenta elementi del tutto originali nella panoramica delle opere di Rocchi.

Concrezioni e memorie; redy made e fluide onde sonore marine e terrestri, oggetti d’uso e non solo. Opere squisitamente moderne e nel contempo saporosamente arcaiche nella materia e nei colori. Un ritrovamento che sembra consono al contemporaneo dell’artista, sono infatti queste, in assoluto, le sue opere più recenti. I piccoli bassorilievi appartengono nel contempo a un vissuto personale e pubblico. Memorie che si fondono in una volontà di stampo pop, di matrice collettiva. Rocchi non disdegna collegamenti esterni e mistici.Aquesto proposito ci dice: Nel mio pensiero, l’uso che faccio dell’oggetto non è quello del “riutilizzare e decontestualizzare” come hanno fatto gli artisti del Nouveau Réalisme, (le accumulazioni di Arman, le compressioni di César o di Hoberten) o il semplice uso di materiali di scarto (arte povera), appunto detti poveri, (ferro, legno stracci, plastica ecc.) ma voglio più che altro, consacrare l’esistenza in vita dell’oggetto, evocando tramite le sue tracce sul bassorilievo un ultimo suo tragitto, una testimonianza della sua esistenza, quindi voglio renderlo, per quanto possibile, sacro.

Consacrare l’esistenza, è evocare e dare testimonianza del tempo vissuto. The section of bas-reliefs divided into two distinct typologies called “Mutazioni” and “Tracce” presents completely original elements in the overview of Rocchi’s works.

Concretions and memories; redy made and fluid marine and terrestrial sound waves, objects of use and more. Exquisitely modern works and at the same time exquisitely archaic in their materials and colours. A discovery that seems to be in keeping with the artist’s contemporaneity; these are in fact his most recent works. The small basreliefs belong at the same time to a personal and public experience. Memories that merge into a pop-style, collective matrix. Rocchi does not disdain external and mystical connections. In this regard he tells us: In my thinking, the use I make of the object is not that of “reusing and decontextualising” as the artists of Nouveau Réalisme did, (Arman’s accumulations, César or Hoberten’s compressions) or the simple use of discarded materials (arte povera), known as poor (iron, wood, rags, plastic, etc.). I want more than anything else to consecrate the object’s existence in life, evoking through its traces on the bas-relief a last journey, a testimony of its existence, so I want to make it, as far as possible, sacred. To consecrate existence is to evoke and bear witness to time lived. To celebrate this last and unique reality realised through its last use, tracing indelible imprints”. The artist’s thoughts take us back to ancient art and the artists of historical realism. Looking at each object, from keys to scissors, everything connects us to a lyrical and serenely popular everyday life. Today’s traces have no need for mimesis, only obvious emotional suggestions. The authentic inspiration is simple, without superstructures: Alessandro Rocchi lays bare his research without forgetting the enjoyable pleasure of the classical yet modern language.

La nuova figurazione (2003-2006) Andrea Romoli

Con il titolo "La Nuova Figurazione", Alessandro Rocchi espone gli esiti ultimi della propria ricerca plastica compresa in un arco di tempo che spazia dalla fine del 2001 alla metà del 2004. Già il titolo- dietro cui, è bene precisarlo., non c’è nessuna intenzionalità di raccordo con le esperienze neofigurali degli anni sessanta -Tradisce una doppia volontà : quella di uscire allo scoperto, di mostrare l’ultima frontiera raggiunta dalla propria indagine, ma anche e soprattutto quella di annunciare, senza remore e pentimenti, l’inizio di un percorso nuovo basato non già dalla negazione delle esperienze passate, ma sul maturo e sofferto superamento di quelle. La nuova figurazione ha il sapore della nota autocritica che tradisce la consapevolezza degli obbiettivi raggiunti, dei passi mossi nel cammino che porta alla maturità artistica, ma anche dell’impegno, preso ora non soltanto con se stesso, di proseguire nella direzione, dura e spesso scoraggiante, della sperimentazione. Si, perché Alessandro Rocchi, come dimostrano le opere di seguito esposte, ha deliberatamente deciso di sgomberare il campo da ogni leziosità e da quei vincoli della resa fedele del visibile, duri a cadere, che in passato lo hanno tenuto lontano da ogni ipotesi di superamento della banalità del reale. In altri termini l’elemento prezioso che Rocchi sta progressivamente conquistando sta proprio in quella capacità di trasfigurare le cose, di estremizzare la soggettività delle sue interpretazioni e resistere alla tentazione del troppo finito. Basta confrontare questo ultimo ciclo di bronzi e terrecotte con i lavori realizzati ancora nel 2001 per rilevare una nuova e più matura attenzione rivolta non soltanto hai temi affrontati, sempre più lontani dalla quotidianità più ovvia e logora, ma anche hai giochi chiaroscurali delle masse e dei volumi che, a seconda del caso, si presentano con superfici ravvivate da un colorismo che sa sfruttare al meglio tutte le proprietà della materia. Per questa via le superfici si presentano ora levigate, per accentuare la morbida fluidità della luce, ora taglienti, tormentate e discontinue, per meglio evidenziare i contrasti e giocare sapientemente con le contrapposizioni più nette. Per l’appassionato d’arte che non rinuncia alle certezze del metodo comparativo sarà sufficiente uno sguardo per cogliere in questi

Under the title La nuova Figurazione, Alessandro Rocchi presents the latest results of his plastic research over a period of time ranging from the end of 2001 to mid-2004.

The title itself - behind which, it should be pointed out, there is no intention of linking up with the neo-figurative experiences of the 1960s - conveys a twofold desire: to come out into the open, to show the latest frontier reached by his own research, but also and above all to announce, without hesitation or repentance, the start of a new path based not on the negation of past experiences, but on the mature and painful overcoming of them. The new figuration has the flavour of a self-critical note that betrays an awareness of the goals achieved, of the steps taken on the path that leads to artistic maturity, but also of the commitment, now made not only to himself, to continue in the hard and often discouraging direction of experimentation. Yes, because Alessandro Rocchi, as the works exhibited here show, has deliberately decided to clear the field of any affectation and of those hard-to-fail constraints of the faithful rendering of the visible, which in the past have kept him far from any hypothesis of overcoming the banality of reality. In other words, the precious element that Rocchi is progressively acquiring lies precisely in his ability to transfigure things, to take the subjectivity of his interpretations to extremes and resist the temptation of the too finite. It is enough to compare this latest cycle of bronzes and terracottas with the works made in 2001 to note a new and more mature attention not only to the themes addressed, which are increasingly distant from the most obvious and worn-out everyday life, but also to the chiaroscuro effects of the masses and volumes which, depending on the case, are presented with surfaces enlivened by a colourism that knows how to make the most of all the properties of the material. In this way, the surfaces are sometimes smooth, to accentuate the soft fluidity of the light, and sometimes sharp, tormented and discontinuous, to better highlight the contrasts and play skilfully with the sharpest contrasts. For the art lover who does not renounce the certainties of the comparative method, one glance will be enough to perceive in these works the echo of the great

lavori l’eco della grande tradizione plastica antica mediata dai maestri del recente passato: di Moore si ritrovano certe morbidezze formali, di Marini il simbolismo, di Manzù la sensibilità delle superfici. Per non dire dello scultore Nunzio Bibbò, intimo del Nostro, che pure ha fornito un contributo importante per le più recenti variazioni stilistiche di Rocchi. Dati questi modelli, non è quindi un caso se nella trattazione dei piani, della “pelle” dell’opera, l’artista inserisce in uno stesso saggio plastico soluzioni diverse e solo apparentemente distanti. A volte un viso trasognato dal profilo spigoloso e tagliente come una lama può combinarsi con un corpo slanciato e polito su cui la luce si spande morbidamente. Ma ben oltre la varietà delle possibilità chiaroscurali, Rocchi ha compreso la forza dirompente dell’evocazione indefinita delle forme. Ha preso atto che il mistero, ciò che non viene palesato, cattura e seduce lo sguardo per la sua capacità di chiamare in causa e stimolare l’intelligenza di chi osserva, di impegnare al massimo grado le facoltà interpretative, imponendo quella fitta rete di domande e risposte su cui si basa il tessuto delle ipotesi di significato. È per questo, per accentuare il mistero, che le figure dell’ultimo ciclo, risolte con una virtuosa sommarietà che dice senza raccontare e accenna senza definire, si presentano talvolta addirittura mutile e incomplete, prive del benché minimo elemento che ne contraddistingua la storia. E se si cerca qualche indizio nei titoli, sostituiti dalla progressione cronologica delle opere, quasi dei numeri d’ordine, il mistero sarà ancora più fitto.

ancient plastic tradition mediated by the masters of the recent past: certain formal softnesses can be found in Moore’s work, Marini’s symbolism, Manzù’s sensitivity to surfaces. Not to mention the sculptor Nunzio Bibbò, a close friend of ours, who also made an important contribution to Rocchi’s more recent stylistic variations. Given these models, it is therefore no coincidence that in the treatment of the planes, of the “skin” of the work, the artist inserts different and only apparently distant solutions in the same plastic essay. Sometimes a dreamy face with an angular profile as sharp as a blade can be combined with a slender, polished body on which the light softly spreads. But far beyond the variety of chiaroscuro possibilities, Rocchi has understood the disruptive force of the indefinite evocation of forms. He has realised that mystery, that which is not revealed, captures and seduces the gaze because of its ability to call into question and stimulate the intelligence of the observer, to engage the interpretative faculties to the highest degree, imposing that dense network of questions and answers on which the fabric of the hypotheses of meaning is based. It is for this reason, to accentuate the mystery, that the figures of the last cycle, resolved with a virtuoso summary that tells without telling and hints without defining, are sometimes even dull and incomplete, lacking the slightest element that distinguishes their story. And if we look for some clue in the titles, replaced by the chronological progression of the works, almost like order numbers, the mystery will be even thicker.
