A = Milky Teal Seed Beads B = Gold Lined Cream Seed Beads C = 3mm Yellow Opal Bicones Tips: If you find it more comfortable to pass from front to back through the hoop then do so.

It’s important to be consistent and pass though in the same direction throughout. Tension is also very important. Nymo and KO Threads will give a floppy finish unless you keep your tension tight. Firmer threads (Fireline etc) can be used if you prefer to work with less tension.

Base row. 1. Begin by threading your needle with approx half a metre of thread. Tie the thread to the hoop base leaving a good 6 inch tail for tying in when finished.

2. Pick up 2A. Holding these 2 beads outside the hoop, pass the needle (from back to front) through the hoop and back up through the second bead added. *It is important to ensure that you pass the needle back through the bead as if the thread is going back on itself. Push them flat so that they sit side by side with a bridge of thread between them.

3. Pick up 1A. Pass the needle under the hoop (from back to front) and *back up through the bead.

Pull the thread until your newly added bead sits snugly against the first two added.

4. Repeat step 3 until you have 24 beads on this base row. Adjust them along the hoop until you are happy that they are in the centre.

Second row. 5. Pick up 2B. Pass under the thread bridge (from back to front) between the second and third beads of the base row. Pass *back up through the second bead just added.

6. Pick up 1B. Pass the needle under the next thread and* back up through the bead just added.

7. Repeat step 6 to the end of the row.

Third row. 8. Pick up 1C, 1A & 1C. Pass under the thread bridge (from back to front) between the second and third beads on the first row. Pass *back up through the third bead just added.

9. Pick up 1A & 1C. Pass the needle under the next thread bridge and* back up through the second bead just added.

10. Repeat step 9 to the end of the row.

Note: At this point, if your tension is correct, you may notice that your work has creating a curve. This is correct.

Fourth and last row. 11. Pass the thread through the next A bead and pick up 1A, 1B & 1A. Pass through the A bead again to form a small group of 4 (3 new beads and 1 bead on row 3).

12. Pass down through the nearest C bead onto row 3 & the next B bead onto row 2. Pass back up through the next B bead on row 2 and then up thought the next C bead on row 3. This should bring you to the same position you found yourself at the beginning of step 11 but further along the row.

13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 until you get to the end.

14. Finish by weaving through & tying off. Thread your needle onto the tail from the beginning and weave through & tie off.

15. Using 2 jump rings, attach the ear wire to the hoop. Repeat the steps for the second earring.

SUMMER HOLIDAY JEWELLERY SET DESIGN BY ALEX PINHORN

For the beach hut, cut an arm span of thread (you will need to add in further length/s later) and add a stopper bead, pick up 9 beads of green, 4 clear, 2 green, 4 blue, 4 white, 2 blue and 3 grey.

For the first stitch, miss the last bead added (grey) and go into next bead then Peyote weave with beads of the same/corresponding colour as you move up, as you get to the top (grey) you need to decrease to create the roof. You are working from the centre out.

At the edge of the door I added the orange bead for the door knob. Once you have made it as wide as you would like (I did 16 rows), add two rows of the grey roof colour beads. Go back to the middle and do the other half in the same way. If you want to create the 3D effect on the right side after the two rows of grey beads down the edge, start adding the stripes but move up one row from the bottom (missing the first bead) and add the bottom row colour, as you move up you need to go a row higher with the colour each time which creates the perspective with the stripes to make it look 3D, as in picture, do this until it looks right, I did 17 rows. Now go back to fill in the roof, you are still Peyote weaving but going from side to side with the grey beads, following the rows with grey beads until you reach the top. It is quite easy but you may need to weave round to get yourself in the correct place at the end of rows.

For the pendant loop cut an arm span of thread pick up 1 dark grey and 5 cream, 4 times, weave back round these beads to create a circle and come out of the first cream after the first grey, Peyote weave round the circle until you get to the grey where you add two grey beads, this creates the corner.

Step up and go round again, add two grey at the corner again. Work your way to the centre and come out of the first bead after the corner. Weave round the centre which will stand up and work round in the same way.

After two rounds like this, on the third round add one grey in the corner (instead of two) in each corner to end. Then zip the two sides together to form a square. Then weave a small tag from one corner, 3 bead Peyote weave for five rows and sew into back of hut.

For the Seagulls: Pick up 1 gold bead and 18 dark grey beads, Peyote weave up but sew through the third bead to form the tail, on the way back go round the gold bead and one grey to create the beak (try and keep the gold one straight –it has a tendency to go edge on) to the tail end you need to create three beads at the end, then two and the third bead is left as a single. The head end is three across, then the next row you have added one black bead on each side for eyes spaced with two grey beads between.

You create this as you weave up and down the body. You will have four beads across on every other row and five on the alternate rows, see picture, then add the cream beads – you can do this as the picture, on either side, or you can add all to one side as you will zip together to form a tube, forming the head end and leaving the tail flat. You can add the wings by forming separately and sewing on, (if you do it this way you will need to pick up four grey beads and Peyote weave for approx. 8 rows as you get to the end decrease to a single bead on the top edge to form wing shape.

Add cream underneath in the same way and sew together and attach to body). As I went on found it easier to weave the wings by adding directly to body – take thread through from zipping together to the grey beads back from eye – Peyote weave two grey beads down the side of the body using the body beads to anchor in one bead at a time and Peyote weave four across the wing and decrease to a single bead at the tip. They are about 8 beads long which is 16 rows, but until they look the right size.

I then did the same underneath in cream beads and sewing through the edge thread to join the top and bottom. I tried to get a bit of a curve on the wings to make them look like they were flying. Each seagull is then threaded onto a small piece of wire, (wiggle the wire in between the beads on the underside and out from the top, it doesn’t matter if not straight through as a little angle is good) loop or wire wrap loops each side. This is then suspended onto a piece of wire strung with five blue beads and wire looped at each end.

(Five beads length in between gulls and three beads for the wire to attach to the ear wire. Then attach the shorter wire to the loop on the top seagull and the other end to the ear wire.

'CRESCENT CUDDLES' PEARL BRACELET

1. Beaded Bead: On 1yd of thread, add three CMC (CzechMate Crescent Bead), and one S15 (Size 15 seed bead). Repeat five more times, making sure that each CMC added is oriented in the same direction. Form a ring and tie a square knot against the tail. Pass through all beads again, pulling snug as you go. After passing through three CMC, jump to the second hole of CMC. Pass through the open holes of the next two CMC. 2. Add S15, then pass through the open holes of the next three CMCs. Repeat five more times.

Drop one RB (Round Pearl Bead) inside the ring of CMC. Pass through all beads in this step again, pulling snug as you go. The RB should be able to rotate freely within the ring. Knot and tie off.

3. Repeat Steps 1–2 to make a total of 3 beaded beads.

4. Stringing: a) On 1ft of wire, add a crimp bead and one half the clasp. Pass back through the crimp bead, and leave 2 inch tail. Crimp the bead. b) Add ten S15, making sure they thread over the 2 inch tail thread exiting the crimp bead. c) Add 1 x RB, 5 x S15, 1 x RB, 5 x S15. Thread through one of your beaded beads, through the hole in the pearl. d) Add 5 x S15, 1 x RB, 5 x S15, 1 x beaded bead and repeat the pattern to mirror the completed side of the bracelet or following the image.

5. Finish your design by repeating the process of adding the other half of the clasp - add a crimp bead and the other half the clasp. Pass back through the crimp bead, and pass the thread back into the beads. Continue through the beads and exit before your second pearl.

Pull this thread tightly to close any loop of thread near the clasp and squash the crimp bead to secure in place. Trim off the excess thread.

Kumihimo isn t just for bracelets

Watch this useful tutorial and learn how to make simple 8 strand kumihimo braids!

There are so many possibilities to explore using different shapes and sizes of seed beads. From simple braids like the examples of kumihimo above, to creating intricate loomed designs with delicate patterns across the surface. These brilliant seed bead shapes can all be used alongside smaller round seed beads and larger glass beads such as faceted round fire polish or bicones.

Make note of the brand of seed beads you're choosing as you plan out your designs. The different shaped beads made by Par Puca will slot together perfectly, as will different Preciosa beads such as pip beads, twin hole beads and farfalle beads.

FESTIVAL GLAMOUR LOOM BRACELET DESIGN BY KATRINA

This design was made using the Little Ricky Beading Loom, but you can adapt the pattern and instructions to suit any other beading loom. This pattern makes a design that is 5.5inches long (6� including the ends). If you want to make yours the same size insert your Little Ricky Beading Loom bridge into the 9th hole from the top. Feel free to lengthen this design by simply repeating the pattern.

Thread on your first row of 5 seed beads starting from the bottom of your diagram. Weave your needle under the warp threads. This next bit can be tricky, but once your have your first row it becomes much easier! Use your finger to lift the beads in place to sit between each of the warp threads. Pass the needle through the first row of beads from the left to right, raising the beads, to make sure the needle passes over the warp threads. To complete this row, pass your needle back through the beads (right to left) but this time press the beads down so that you pass under the warp threads. If you ever miss a bead, just repeat the previous steps. Continue adding rows until you reach the top of your loom. Make your pattern as long as you need, once you reach the top of the diagram, start again at the bottom.

The final row can be tricky as it will be a tight fit. You might find it easier to pass through a couple of beads at a time. Once you have finished beading and have reached the other side of your loom, secure your working thread back into your design, knotting over your warp and weft threads along the way. If you feel you have too large a gap between your last beads and the end of your loom, add another row of beads. You may wish to do the same at the beginning of the piece so that both ends match (if you have enough space).

Remove your bracelet from the loom. Place the piece on a flat surface and gently run your fingers from the middle, outwards to evenly distribute the beads and spread them slightly to fill the small gaps of thread where the bar was. Weave your two warp threads through the ends of the piece to secure.

Take a new length of cord and weave it into the end of the piece, about 5 rows away from the end. You may wish to secure it to a warp thread with a knot or two for security. Weave the thread passing it through each row until you reach the end row. Pass the needle through three beads, string on 10 ivory seed beads and bring the needle back through the beads to form a loop.

Bring the needle through the remaining 2 beads and out of the end row.

Weave the cord back into the design and tie a couple of knots to secure it.

Trim away the ends and repeat this step for the opposite side.

Attach a jumpring and a lobster clasp to one loop, and just a jumpring to the other. You may wish to also add an extension chain.

HOW TO USE YOUR BRACELET KIT Try mixing and matching your colourful kit to make colour themed jewellery.

For our berry inspired bracelet set we mixed our favourite pink, purple and some golden tones and finished it with the sparkling flower charm! Learn how to make your simple elastic bracelets using the instructions below.

How to make a simple beaded elastic bracelet Step 1. Take a length of elastic measuring approximately 12 inches. Thread on around 30 beads in your chosen order or until your bracelet has enough beads to fit around your wrist.

You may want to add less or more depending on your wrist size. Make sure to test this against your wrist before knotting and securing your design.

Step 2. Hold the two sides of your elastic cords together, make a loop with the double cord and pull the ends through the loop to make a knot. The two cords will exit through the top of the knot.

Step 3. Stretch the knot away from any beads and add a drop of glue or clear nail polish to the knot. Wait a few seconds for this to dry completely before letting your knot move back to sit next to the beads. Trim off the ends of the cord leaving half a centimetre on each cord.

Make sure your bracelet doesnt have to stretch too tightly to move over your hand, it is better to have it slightly looser so that your elastic won't snap and the knot will hold.

How to make a double strand bracelet with your flower charm Step 1. Take a length of elastic measuring approximately 18 inches. Thread on enough beads you need to fit around your wrist. Thread through one loop on your flower charm.

Step 2. Thread on another section of beads, the same amount as you did for the first beads on the other side of the flower charm.

Step 3. Take the two ends of the cord and bring them around either side of the flower charm.

Thread each end in opposite directions through the second hole on the flower charm. Knot the cords here a couple of times and position the knot under the loop. Add a drop of glue or clear nail polish to hold the knot securely. Trim off the ends of the cords.
