A SPECTACULAR SUMMER TERM FILLED WITH ADVENTURES ABROAD, PRODUCTIONS AND PERFORMANCES, SPORTING SUCCESS, EVENTS, SCHOLARSHIPS, CROSS - CURRICULAR ACHIEVEMENTS AND FOND FAREWELLS AS THE ACADEMIC YEAR CAME TO A CLOSE.

Headmaster’s Welcome
As befits this school, there is so much to be proud of and to celebrate in this final term of the 2023-2024; this really is a school that pushes itself and provides opportunities for every day of the school year. And we do this because of our ever enthusiastic and willing boys, who embrace everything that is presented to them and invest an intellectual curiosity and work ethic on a continued basis. Make no mistake, there is no educational environment for young people like this; it truly is a special place.
My sincere thanks to my colleagues who have worked tirelessly for your boys this year. Their dedication, professionalism, creativity, good
humour and great company make this an inspiring place to work. Not a day goes by without a suggestion of how to make The Beacon even better and add yet more vibrancy and fulfilment to the boys’ experiences.

We were thrilled to welcome our Beacon Community to the Wycombe Swan, once again, to celebrate the achievements of our boys in Years 4-8.
On Wednesday 3 July, our Beacon Community excitedly gathered at the Wycombe Swan Theatre for our annual Speech Day event, celebrating all the achievements of boys in Years 4-8.
The event was a perfect way to honour our boys and to say a fond farewell to our Year 6 and Year 8 leavers.
It was a pleasure to welcome back former Beacon boy, James Harding (OB 1978-77), who was our keynote speaker for the event.

A fond farewell
Best wishes and farewell to our Year 8 leavers. It has been a pleasure watching the boys grow, learn and develop into exceptional young men. We wish you the best of luck in the next chapter of your lives.
Our leavers are always welcome back to the school, so please do come and say hello! Once a Beacon boy, always a Beacon boy.

Be Inspired

Insightful Science
Eruptions and bubbles impressed our boys as they immersed themselves into intriguing Science experiments.

Bubble Play
Our Little Beacons were elated to experiment with bubbles in the garden. With a wide selection of instruments, they were fascinated by the different bubbles that each formed and the shimmering rainbow colours.
Some of the boys impressed the group by making huge bubbles, much to everyone's excitement... including the older Beacon boys who were playing in awe nearby!

Volcanic Eruption
Our boys in Reception were thrilled to take part in a volcano experiment, creating their very own eruption!

Learning about Photosynthesis
Year 7 investigated how light intensity affects the rate of photosynthesis - how plants make glucose by using Elodea. The boys paid close attention to the test tubes to see the bubbles!

Gardening Club
A group of boys from Years 4 to 6 enjoyed a spot of gardening in our Kitchen Garden, led by Mrs Rowland. The boys spent some time in the sun digging away the weeds to ensure that the soil was ready for some new broad beans, tomatoes and courgettes to be planted.

Christopher Edge Author Visit
We were pleased to welcome awardwinning author, Christopher Edge, to talk to boys in Years 4 to 8 about his new book 'Black Hole Cinema Club'.
Christopher talked through his favourite movie genres and how they have been incorporated into a series of puzzles that the heroes of the story have to solve in order to save the world before the credits roll.

Young Reporters
Our Year 8 boys indulged in a thrilling journalist experience. They stepped into the role of roving reporters as part of our Young Reporters' initiative.

Letter to the King
As part of their London topic, Year 1 learned all about King Charles III. In Art, they sketched their own King Charles stamps, working carefully on capturing his features in profile. The boys were so proud of the finished results that they sent them off to King Charles himself!

SCRUMPTIOUS SCONES
To mark VE Day, our Year 2 boys spent some time in the Cooking and Nutrition room making scones! They worked hard with Mrs Rowland in the morning to ensure that by the afternoon they could enjoy their tasty treats!

We were delighted to host an engaging and delicious North Indian and Punjabi Curry event, led by the talented Mrs Sandhu. She expertly demonstrated the cooking of several dishes, including Punjabi Dal Makhani, Paneer along with Aloo Paratha, Roti and Naan bread.

Introducing New Co-Chairs
We are pleased to announce the appointment of our new Beacon Parents' Society Co-Chairs, Jas Birha and Faye Hedges. We are looking forward to working with them to run a host of exciting fundraisers and events.
A huge thank you to Octavia Orchard and Emma Ife who have stepped down after three years. Your support to The Beacon Community and local charities has been invaluable.
Charity at The Beacon
Another term of fantastic fundraising and some great sporting challenges, including a mammouth cycle to Paris as well as individual efforts from our Beacon Community.

In June we held a fancy dress day at The Beacon in aid of Street Kids Direct, a charity helping vulnerable children and youth living on the streets or at very high-risk of street life.
Our Beacon boys were replaced by minions, dinosaurs and many other interesting characters! Much to the boy's amusement, various Beacon staff members dressed as Beacon boys!
Thank you to everyone who donated. A fantastic £1,022 was raised.
A huge congratulations to our staff and parents, who embarked on a mammoth cycle from The Beacon to Paris in just two days. What an achievement!
We were overwhelmed by the support and donations for The Headmaster's Bursary Fund and towards the development of our Cooking & Nutrition Room.
Our Beacon Community raised a wonderful £3,550!

Over the next 12 months, Mrs McDonald and her husband (Kieran) will be completing 6 ultra marathon challenges ranging from 40 - 100 miles. All the money raised will go towards the charity called 'The Noah Jordan Foundation' to raise awareness for genetic diseases, support research and provide financial aid for parents who are in a similar situation.
Good luck to Mr and Mrs McDonald, we wish you the best of luck with your challenge! So far, a staggering £1,485 has been raised!

Lower School MasterCook
Several Year 4 boys were also busy over the Summer Term, taking part in the Lower School MasterCook Competition. The competition was tough as the standard was so high. Congratulations to all the boys who took part, especially with only one year of lessons in the Cooking and Nutrition room!

A truly unforgettable experience! Well done to our Beacon restaurateurs covering front of house as well as kitchen prep and service. The budding chefs worked hard to create the most delectable cuisine, impressing our guests of parents and staff members who thoroughly enjoyed their dining experience.

Our Little Beacons took to the kitchen and made bread with our Head Chef, Dino. They learnt to knead the dough and shaped it into their own individual rolls. Fantastic work, our floury Beacon bakers!
Beacon Life Be Creative
A Roarsome Term
Throughout the Summer Term our Early Years’ boys learned about Dinosaurs. As well as learning many facts, the topic allowed them to get creative and make their very own dinosaurs.
They also had a session outdoors looking at a range of textures to help them imagine what the skins of dinosaurs might have been like. They had fun doing bark rubbings and putting these all together to create a class dinosaur.
A highlight of the term was Dinosaur Day where the Nursery and Reception boys came to school dressed as dinosaurs! They loved expressing themselves, stomping and roaring throughout the day!

We were thrilled to invite our Beacon Community to an outstanding whole school Art Exhibition, hosted in the Spinney Theatre at The Beacon. Every boy in the school, from Nursery to Year 8, had at least one piece of artwork displayed, with each year group focusing on a variety of themes.
The event was impressive, attended by Beacon boys proudly viewing their own pieces showcased among their peers, in addition to parents, governors, staff and members of the local community coming along.

Learning About Money
Year 4 learned all about money and applying it to real life situations. As a fun activity, they set up a class shop where the boys had to guess the prices of different grocery items before going ‘shopping’ with their money. They were tasked with certain budgets, requiring them to calculate the total cost of the shop and the change required. It gave them a good understanding of receipts, budgeting and financial transactions.

DISCO TIME
Our Year 6 boys were delighted to welcome girls from Heatherton and RMS to join them at their end of year Disco The big event was held in the Sports Hall at The Beacon. All the pupils devoured the complimentary popcorn and danced the night away!

Collaborative Work
Over the Summer Term, our Year 4 boys wrote stories for Year 3. They started by interviewing a boy they were partnered up with to get an idea for settings, characters and plots. They then returned to class to plan and write a short story which they published and illustrated. Once completed, Year 3 and Year 4 walked over to Willsfield to sit in their pairs and read their stories to each other in the sun. A lovely activity, well done!
Alumni News
1940s and 1950s Reunion
We were delighted to welcome a group of our 1940s and 1950s alumni back to The Beacon in June for a special reunion. Some of our guests travelled from as far as Canada and Hong Kong to join us for the occasion. For others, it was their first time back to The Beacon in over 60 years! Our visitors very much enjoyed being shown round by our superb Year 5 tour guides and lunch in the ‘new’ dining room was also a vastly more enjoyable experience than many remembered! It was fascinating to hear stories and recollections from their time at The Beacon and a reminder to us all as to how much the school has grown and changed.

Class of 2005 - 2010
We were also thrilled to welcome back some of our more recent leavers and their teachers at our Class of 2005-2010 Reunion in June. It was fascinating to hear what our alumni had been up to since leaving The Beacon and the careers they’ve been pursuing. Despite the unseasonably wet weather, our alumni also enjoyed looking around the school and were amazed by some of the developments that had occurred in the intervening years. Huge thanks to everyone who joined us on the evening – it was wonderful to see you back at The Beacon again!
