The newly formed Beacon basketball team

Basketball

This year, our boys were overjoyed to learn that The Beacon Basketball Team was to form.

During the try-outs, the standard of basketball was high. After a term of practice, our Year 8 boys took to the court to compete against local rivals Dr Challoner’s Grammar School. The boys maintained a high level of determination and teamwork, which led to them storming to victory in the last two quarters.

Let us hope the Summer Term brings us just as much success!

Cross Country

All our boys certainly had a spring in their step throughout the term, with fantastic efforts all round in cross country.

At the Inter-School Cross Country Competition held at Gayhurst, both Year 3 and Year 4 won their races with James M winning the Year 3 race by miles! A fantastic effort!

Year 5 and Year 6 took part in the Bucks County Schools Cross Country Championships, securing second place in the team competition. In the Junior boys' race, which comprised of runners from Year 8 and Year 9, Ed B and Sammy G ran with power and determination. Ed came home in 17th position and Sammy was 35th having just recovered from COVID. An excellent effort considering there were over 130 runners in the field!

The U11 team successfully completed the St John's School Northwood Cross Country race with a great team performance and again, coming out victorious! Four of the boys finished in the top 10 which was a fantastic effort.

A huge well done to all our boys!

Maths, Maths, Maths!

Maths has been a hot topic over the Spring Term, with the celebration of World Maths Day on Wednesday 23 March plus various competitions taking place. Years 4 and 5 brought home the first-place trophy for the Junior Maths Challenge, and we had a fun-filled week of Maths-related activities, including a visit from a Maths Magician who left the boys chanting, ‘Maths is fun’.

Beacon boy amazed by a Maths Magician multiplying trick

Is it Magic or is it Maths?

A Maths Magician visited our PrePrep boys as a special treat during Maths Week! The Magician started off by asking the boys to call out some 2D shapes, which he drew, then magically made someone's name appear.

Our younger boys learnt about multiplying and were amazed as the magic fluff in his hand kept increasing and increasing!

There was a room full of laughter in addition to Maths tips being taught.

Maths Week

Our boys were thriving on the excitement when Maths Week arrived, enthusiastically getting stuck into the different puzzles and challenges. They were faced with various activities from The Beacon Countdown, which was our version of the gameshow live streamed to whole school, to Palmer's Puzzles sited around the school daily and Maths Millionaire – our take on ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’.

The highlight of the week was pi’ing in the Quad, where the winners got to 'pie' their Teachers!

Herts for Learning Maths Challenge

Eight of our Year 5 boys participated in the Herts for Learning Maths Challenge and excelled by achieving 3rd and 5th position among 66 teams in their heat. The top 20 teams from a total of 270 teams across 6 heats were invited to the final, of which The Beacon were thrilled to be placed 10th and 20th. A huge congratulations, boys!

Intermediate UKMT Maths Challenge

Our Year 7 and 8 boys were excited to take part in the Intermediate UKMT Maths Challenge. We received several awards, which demonstrates how enthusiastic and capable our boys are in Maths. Sean T and George C were gold winners reaching the highest standards of national Maths. Well done to all our boys!

Junior Maths Challenge

Five of our top mathematicians from Years 4 and 5 had an excellent day visiting Shiplake College for their inaugural Junior Maths Challenge. During the competition our boys had various challenges to navigate through, from a relay race testing for accuracy and speed, to a sculpturebuilding task measuring creativity and teamwork. Team Beacon excelled in every round finishing the competition in a superb first place, bringing a trophy back to school which is proudly displayed in The Beacon Maths Hub.

“Pupils have excellent self-knowledge, selfconfidence, and self-belief. Pupils of all ages demonstrate high levels of self-discipline. They confidently justify decisions, choices or explanations, secure that they and their ideas are valued.”

We were delighted to once again welcome parents into the Spinney Theatre to enjoy our Lower School, Middle School and Upper School Beacon Voices perform.

Our Beacon Voices were well prepared for the occasion, which was clear as they sang beautifully and professionally throughout the performance.

It was lovely to see our boys proudly performing in front of a live audience once again. Our Pre-Prep, Lower School and Middle School boys enjoyed participating in Informal Concerts. They practised hard and were thrilled to be able to deliver their musical skills to a live audience.
