than ever according to officials. The difficult economy and cuts in the CalFresh food stamp program are swelling the ranks of local people who need help to feed their families, says Center Executive Director Betty McWilliams. “Last year, we served more than 1,336 pre-registered families,” she notes. “As economic conditions remain difficult; the need for our weekly food assistance has grown. The community’s support is more vital than ever.” 77% of the Center’s clients are at or below the National Poverty Level. The Thanksgiving Distribution is just one aspect of the Center’s year-round Family Food Program, which provided over 3.6 million pounds of groceries to food-insecure clients last year. Each month, clients receive a grocery cart of food items, sized by number of people in the family to supplement needs for 7-10 days. They may return to pick up perishable food items once a week, including fresh produce, dairy and baked goods. The Center also Please see page 4

West Covina City Manager salary increase under fire; Assemblyman calls tactics “Distasteful”

Assembly member Roger Hernandez (D-West Covina) released a statement about the recent move by particular members of the West Covina City Council to increase perks to the current city manager. This move comes as a last minute effort before the new elected city council members take office: “Earlier today, I read the Article that appeared in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune regarding the coded language to increase the

salary and other perks to the current City Manager. I find it very appalling and disturbing that members of this council are willing to increase perks and salary to a City Manager that has neither proven himself nor demonstrated the capacity to lead the city into tomorrow. In a time when state and local governments, such as the City of West Covina, have reduced public safety personnel Please see page 5

PETA offers TOR a dramatic design change for SeaWorld float

-Courtesy Photo

Thursday, PETA sent an urgent letter to R. Scott Jenkins, president of the 2014 Pasadena Tournament of Roses, urging him to require a change in the design of SeaWorld's float for the Rose Parade in January. Currently, the display shows majestic orcas living free in the open sea. But at SeaWorld, orcas are restricted to concrete tanks, where they often break their teeth by gnawing on the underwater bars because of stress and boredom—all in the name of performing tricks at SeaWorld. PETA's suggested design shows an orca confined to a fish bowl and

surrounded by chains—a more accurate depiction of how these magnificent animals are deprived of everything that's natural and important to them at SeaWorld. The caption reads, "SeaWorld of Hurt—Where Happiness Tanks." "Require SeaWorld to represent its treatment of orcas more accurately by using [PETA's] design with a slight tweak to the parade's theme—'SeaWorld: Where Dreams Never Come True,'" writes PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange, a Pasadena resident. "[W]e urge you to do the right thing for the orcas who have suffered so much and

embrace this change in the float design." In the wild, orcas share intricate relationships with one another and swim as much as 100 miles every day. Many orcas at SeaWorld—including Tilikum, the subject of the compelling documentary Blackfish who killed three people, including SeaWorld trainer Dawn Brancheau—were rounded up rodeo-style and taken from their family pods in the wild. At least 25 orcas have died in U.S. SeaWorld facilities since 1986—and not one died of old age. Calls to TOR for comment were not immediately returned.

rapher Tavo Olmos, who was contracted by the City of Pasadena to document the 1991-1993 restoration of the Colorado Street Bridge. His recent book, available for purchase and signing, features select views of the deconstruction and reconstruction. Hailed by the Scientific American as “one of the few bridges that can properly be classified as a work of art” upon its opening in 1913, the Bridge survived diminished relevance as a thoroughfare, increasing deterioration, and proposals for demolition to become a prime example of civic preservation. On the occasion of the Bridge’s centennial, this comprehensive exhibition features the work of local artists, photographers, au-

thors, and designers who have portrayed the iconic structure over the past 100 years. The exhibit pays homage to the people who built and preserved a beloved local landmark: the architects, the engineers, the builders, the civic leaders, and the community organizers who worked tirelessly to make it possible. Historic photographs, drawings, and related ephemera from the collections of PMH and the Pasadena Public Library tell the story of the Bridge through the decades. Photographs by Tavo Olmos of the 19911993 bridge reconstruction project detail the complexity and extent of the efforts that were necessary to preserve the structure. The Colorado Street

Bridge Centennial Exhibition is sponsored by the American Society of Civil Engineers, Los Angeles Section and Andrew Machen. Hours and Admission The exhibition is on view from Noon to 5:00 pm Wednesdays through Sundays from November 20, 2013 through April 19, 2014. A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Pasadena Central Library presents “Ecos de España,” a holiday program of Spanish classical, flamenco, and Gypsy Romani music and dance on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Donald R. Wright Auditorium. The family-friendly show includes interactive moments for children while still maintaining the high level of artistic sophistication that adult audiences expect. “Ecos de España” is comprised of three artists joined by a shared love of Spanish classical, flamenco, and Romani Gypsy music and dance. World guitarist and Pasadena resident Almer

Imamovic plays a selection of the timeless compositions created for the Spanish guitar, as well as Gypsy Balkan music. Classical Spanish dancer Albertossy Espinoza performs traditional and original choreographies to ataped and live music. Susana Elena’s varied dance repertoire ranges from Gypsy flamenco to a “Zapateado,” a Spanish theater dance with roots dating to the time of Cervantes. At show’s end children are invited onstage to join in a simple rumba flamenca danced with scarves. Afterward they are offered an introductory castanet class. The theme of this year’s presentation celebrates the

artistic richness and creativity possible when people of diverse cultures and religions join together in a spirit of cooperation. “For almost 800 years, between A.D. 711-1492, Spain experienced a golden age of growth and prosperity due in large part to a spirit of religious and social tolerance,” says flamenco dancer Susana Elena. “It’s a template we still emulate in Los Angeles today.” For additional information about this cost-free event call the library at (626) 7444066. West Covina City Manager under fire

Continued from page 1

(such as police, firefighters, state and municipal employees) we cannot afford to provide unnecessary incentives. How is it possible that our very local government is trying to provide an incentive to anyone who has rightfully NOT earned it. I find it very interesting that our City Manager, who also served as the previous Redevelopment Director, will be receiving an increase to his pay and benefits from the very Councilmember McIntyre who has received a 100% recommendation on all redevelopment projects that came before Mr. Chung. I especially find it distasteful that during the 11th Hour of the last day for

many of these officials present, that they turn their backs on the public’s trusts and decide to reward a friend who has cost the city millions in legal fees and try to prove a point that was baseless. This sounds like a play out of the Bell City Scandal. It is no wonder the residents of West Covina rose up during this last election cycle to dismantle whatever mechanism of deceit was left in the Council. Residents of West Covina can now look towards a healthy brighter new future with the hopes of getting rid of a bitter taste in their mouth that has lasted for a number of years. I will continue to fight for our community’s right to

be heard and prevent any shameful moves, such as the unlawful sale of the civic city hall property for the purpose to construct of new medical offices. Clearly, the memo did not get around disseminating the numerous challenges our community faces and continues to face this very day. This decision should be made and be left to the new city council, which recently won election. The people have spoken and it is time for the new blood to clean up the mess that was left behind, including increasing perks and salary increase to the new city manager,” Hernandez said.”

To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of EDWARD LEON, JR. A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by Wendy Leon in the Superior Court of California, County of LOS ANGELES. THE PETITION FOR PRO-BATE requests that Wendy Leon be appointed as personal repre-sentative to administer the estate of the decedent. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administra-tion of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representa-tive to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important ac-tions, however, the personal repre-sentative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or con-sented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on Dec. 16, 2013 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 9 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the grant-ing of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case TS No. 12-0049691. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco. com, using the file number assigned to this case TS No. 11-0127347. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site.
