LASD offers tips to prevent holiday auto thefts As we begin our Holiday shopping and may have gifts and other large purchases in our vehicles, we need to think about theft prevention. Thefts from vehicles are routinely reported to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and it remains one of the most frequently occurring crimes in the United States. Vehicles are easy targets and often contain property attractive to thieves. Even the most amateur thief can stroll through residential neighborhoods and parking lots and find plenty of opportunity. Help your sheriff's deputies reduce this crime in our community by taking these simple steps: Never leave your car unlocked, or the windows open. Leaving your car unlocked is an open invitation for a thief to help himself. Even leaving your window Please see page 4

Union Station homeless services feeds 4000 people during annual Thanksgiving dinner-in-the-park Volunteer registration now open for Christmas Dinner-In-The-Park

Threats of rain and stricter Health Department regulations negating prepared food donations could not dampen the spirit of Union Station Homeless Services staff, volunteers and the thousands of people who turned out to enjoy the organization’s 41st annual Thanksgiving Dinner InThe-Park. Under sunny skies, 4000 meals were served to homeless and low-income adults and families, senior citizens and people who may have otherwise spent the holiday alone. “It is always rewarding and inspiring to witness how people come together for important causes and events such as our Dinners-In-ThePark,” said Union Station Homeless Services’ CEO Rabbi Marvin M. Gross. “Generosity and gratitude were abounding at our Thanksgiving gathering and we look forward to serving up more good times during our Christmas Dinner-InThe-Park.” Among the countless memorable moments during the Thanksgiving Day festivities was the presentation of a $200,000 "Neighborhood Builders award" from Bank of America. Two lucky turkeys get spa treatment and love over thanksgiving Meet Anne and Jessica turkey, named for vegan beauties Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. Saved from the Southern California slaughter industry, they arrived at Karen Dawn’s house, were treated to a bath and blowdry (all on film at http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=68qaX3ZoZek ) and plenty of love. They’ll be the guests of honor at the Thanksgiving feast -- at the table rather than on it. The only turkey on the table will be a bottle of Wild Turkey bourbon. Kids, and their parents, in Dawn’s Pacific Palisades (Los Angeles) neighborhood love meeting the turkeys. And folks everywhere enjoy the YouTube videos of their “spa treatment” including bath and blow-dry. “I do this as a fun way to send a serious message.

Most people would be unaware that most animal cruelty laws exempt farm animals and turkeys are not even covered under federal humane slaughter laws -- so their lives and deaths for our holiday celebration are unconscionably painful…. “But the main message is simply that turkey day is a lot more fun when the turkeys are alive and well.” After Thanksgiving, Anne and Jessica will head to Animal Place, in Grass Valley Northern California to live out their lives as turkey ambassadors. Karen would love people to visit her Animal Place fundraising page. Check out the media page with Anne and Jessica’s story, the YouTube video, and thumbnails for available photos at http:// ThankingtheMonkey.com/ turkeyrescue

San Gabriel Valley based Nazee Rofagha, D.C. has her finger on the pulse of neurological rehabilitation

Improving the health and well-being of her patients for more than 18 years, San Gabriel Valley based Dr. Nazee Rofagha, Doctor of Chiropractic, remains at the forefront of her field. In addition to practicing complete traditional chiropractic care, Rofagha incorporates a “no boundaries” mindset in her work

and is one of the few doctors in the area that is trained to perform Neurological Rehabilitation, an emerging new collection of non-invasive techniques designed to evaluate and rehabilitate nerves in the body. Currently, Dr. Rofagha is completing the third of the three Modules of Quantum Neurology® Rehabilitation

Training. Developed by Dr. George Gonzalez, DC, QN, this advanced healing concept uses the patient’s own Nervous System to guide their rehabilitation. Dr. Rofagha’s interest in progressive non-invasive healing techniques was born years ago from her own frustration and desire to help alleviate some of her mother’s life-altering pain. It has since grown into a passion to help as many people as possible. Currently patients throughout the San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley and Greater Los Angeles travel to Rofagha’s Pasadena office for this one-of-akind-treatment. A long-standing national board-certified chiropractor licensed by the State of California Board of Chiropractic Examiners and Neurological Rehabilitation Specialist, Dr. Rofagha and the family Chiropractic Wellness Center is located at 1017 South Fair Oaks Avenue in Pasadena. was arrested in Las Vegas last week. The FBI's Los Angeles office said in a statement Tuesday that 30-year-old David Kaup, who disappeared after failing to appear at his December sentencing last year, was arrested at a Las Vegas home where he'd been living. Kaup operated several Los Angeles-based mortgage and investment companies.

In April 2012, he agreed to plead guilty to two counts of wire fraud. According to his plea agreement, Kaup carried out three separate fraud schemes that defrauded more than 50 mostly working class families who sought his assistance in refinancing their homes. The FBI says the schemes led to losses for the homeowners of more than $11 million.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

LASD offers tips to prevent theft Continued from page 1

open a small amount can be enough for a thief to unlock and open your car. Thefts can occur even in the few moments you might be inside a building and your car is not in your view. Never use a Hidea-Key box on your car. Thieves will look for these. Never leave home or office keys in your car. The keys, along with any identifying paperwork left in the car could lead a thief to your home or business. Never leave valuables in clear view. Do not leave purses, cellular phones, backpacks, laptop computers, gym bags, shopping bags, packages, etc. visible from the outside of your ve-

hicle. A thief may not know what is in a bag, but will be willing to break a window or door lock to find out. If you must keep property in your vehicle, place it in the trunk so it is not visible to the opportunist. Place it there prior to arriving at your destination so you are not seen putting it away when you arrive. Avoid leaving your car in an under-used or unattended lot. A frequently used lot means more witnesses, so a theft is less likely to occur. If you are parking at night, or will be returning to your car after dark, park in a well-lit area. Stay away from areas that are concealed, obscured or remote.

When at your home, park inside of a garage if possible. Lock your vehicle and close/lock your garage door. If parking in a garage is not an option, park in your driveway or on the street in front of your home. Leave outdoor lights on or use motion sensing lights. No matter how safe the neighborhood is or how nice the shopping center appears, thefts can always occur. By following these tips we can reduce the thefts in our community and keep the Holidays a time of cheer. Report crime and suspicious activity to your local sheriff's station or police department.

PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

Interested in learning more? www.classicsleepcare.com

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

If you are not currently screening your patients for sleep apnea and would like to learn more about how we can help you, please call.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Our proprietary systems automate the flow of documentation keeping referring doctors completely informed about their patients’ progress and ensure physicians have the documentation they need for follow-up consultations with their patients.
