Glendale beeline - first to operate entire low floor fleet Glendale Beeline has purchased ten new low floor compressed natural gas (CNG) transit buses. The low floor transit buses provide step free entrance ways, offering improved passenger accessibility and maneuverability. “With the December delivery, Glendale Beeline becomes the first public transit agency in Los Angeles County to operate with an entire fleet of low floor buses,” stated Kathryn Engel, Transit Manager for the City. The low floor entrances make it easier for passengers of all abilities to board the bus. Faster passenger boarding reduces dwell time at the bus stops and improves travel speed. We all know what time of year it is. It’s a month of reflection, compassion, friends and family and celebrating the holidays. What most of us don’t know is what it is like to face the holidays as a family with a critically ill child or parent of young children. Enter Here to Serve, an innovative and emerging nonprofit based in the San Gabriel Valley that helps families year-round, that have loved ones who are experiencing a life-threatening

health crisis, with much needed non-medical assistance. “I am a mother and a wife who has been through life-threatening medical events with both my husband and son,” said Here to Serve Founder/CEO Kathleen Quintas, a long-time resident of Sierra Madre. “I understand the pain, the financial struggle, and feelings of helplessness that afflict these families who are trying to keep their life together as they care for a critically ill loved one.

I saw a gap in coordinating resources and identifying and providing available services for families, and I felt it was my duty, even calling, to assist them.” Such feelings of helplessness are often magnified during the holidays. Through its Adopt-A-Family program, Here To Serve is purchasing Christmas gifts for the families it assists who have a child in medical crisis or, as is often Please see page 3

Local cities attempt to put out e-cigarettes By SHEL SEGAL

As the city of Temple City – along with the city of Los Angeles – is working to curb the sale of ecigarettes, it appears that some of Temple City’s neighbors aren’t following suit. Officials from the west San Gabriel Valley cities of Arcadia, San Gabriel and Sierra Madre said earlier this week that they have no plan in the works to restrict the sale of e-cigarettes to minors. However, Jason Krukeberg, assistant city manager in Arcadia, said the situation could change as is warranted. “(Arcadia) is not currently working on any local ordinances to curb sales of e-cigarettes to minors, but we are tracking this issue regionally and at the state level,” Krukeberg said in an email. “In addition, we do not allow cigarette ‘lounges’ or smoking areas for e-cigarettes as a land use.” Officials in Temple City have been mulling

over passing zoning restrictions in dealing with ecigarettes. In fact, city staff recently made an appeal to the city council to pass a decree to restrict zones for electronic cigarette and smoke shops, according to a published report. But the city is not trying to outlaw e-cigarettes, just restrict where they can be sold, a city official said in that published report. In the proposed restrictions, e-cigarette vendors would be prohibited from selling their products within 1,000 feet from schools, public parks, daycare centers and other businesses related in trading or selling nicotine, which is similar to the other implemented restrictions in other cities for massage parlors or strip joints, according to a published report. In Los Angeles, the City Council there voted recently to go one step further and ban the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, according to a published report.

The council also voted to implement existing tobacco restrictions when dealing with e-cigarettes, the report said. If signed by the mayor, e-cigarettes will no longer be sold from self-serve displays or from moving sources like ice cream trucks, the report said. E-cigarettes are devices that deliver nicotine in vapor form. There is a liquid solution stored in the cartridge inside the device, the report said. This liquid is heated by the atomizer, which gets its power from the battery. Through heating, the liquid is turned to vapor, the report said. While there is no data to support the claim that e-cigarettes are dangerous, said an official from UCLA Health Sciences, city staff in Temple City has alleged that e-cigarettes are a public health dancer, the report said. Disaster awareness course coming to Monterey Park The Monterey Park Fire Department in partnership with the Los Angeles City Fire Department is proud to offer the Disaster Awareness Course. The Disaster Awareness Course (DAC) addresses a critical need before and during disasters - ensuring that individuals and families are prepared and able to preserve their family's safety and protect their property. DAC is an extension of the successful Ready Campaign, which is designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies. The program focuses specifically on business, community, family, and individual preparedness. DAC helps people prepare their loved ones, coworkers, and friends to plan for the inevitable and enact pre-disaster skills and training to serve their loved ones during a disaster. It helps in preparing their families to survive while they are waiting for the assistance from first

responders to arrive. When: December 19th, 2013 Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Where: Monterey Park City Hall Council Chambers, 320 W. Newmark Ave., Monterey Park, CA 91754 Who: This course is open to the public and is free of charge The goal of the Disaster Awareness Course is to emphasize the importance of preparing individual and family emergency plans, emergency supply kits, and learning how to access critical information following a disaster. These are all concerns that can be addressed before a catastrophe occurs. Please email Captain Matt Hallock at mhallock@montereypark. ca.gov to confirm attendance and how many will be attending. the case, a family that has a critically-ill parent with small children at home. Even with insurance, medical crises are financially draining, more so for people who are not on any form of government assistance, what Quintas calls the “invisibly underserved, the lower middle and middle class.” Here To Serve is committed to brightening the holidays of its 57 family members. As Christmas is next week, instead of adopting a family or donating gifts, people are encouraged to make a financial contribution at www.heretoserve.org. These tax-deductible donations will be used to replenish some of the organization’s general fund that has already been spent on gifts, holiday checks yet to be written or financial aid for the family. “There are the visibly underserved and the invisibly underserved,” continued Quintas who notes that one in five families this year alone will struggle both emotionally and financially after a family member suffers a life-threatening illness, accident or violent crime that causes severe bodily injury.

“One of our goals at Here To Serve is to help shed light on those people in our community who make $1 more than government assistance allows, the invisibly underserved. This group of people who are the backbone of our society and economy are losing their jobs, homes, financial wellbeing as they care for a critically ill family member without government assistance to help with food, housing, medical and the list goes on. We relieve some of the burden of dayto-day actives from cooking meals to child care to walking dogs to fundraising to help with bills.”

Among its many distinctions, Here to Serve identifies and targets organizations as well as mobilizes friends and community members to provide assistance to its families. It also guides families through the maze of available resources, with associated paper work, as well as responds to ever-changing family needs brought on by the medical crisis. The organization constantly assimilates new information to better assist the individual, family, and caregiver(s). quired from the bus, the suspect is seen boarding at the same time as the victim. The victim later told detectives that, shortly after boarding, the suspect rose from his seat. The victim thought the suspect was going to exit the bus, but instead and without provocation, the suspect stabbed the victim in the throat with a sharp object, possibly a knife, and ran off the bus. The victim’s account of the incident was confirmed by detectives when they reviewed the video. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his throat injury. He has since been released and is expected to make a full recovery. The suspect is described as a male Hispanic, approximately 30 years old, six feet tall, 200 pounds, with short black or brown hair, and a mustache with goatee. In the video footage, the suspect wore a light-colored shirt and dark shorts. Detective Kyle Ynclan stated, “Transit Services Bureau deputies take pride in

maintaining peace of mind for Metro Bus or Train riders. We want citizens to feel comfortable riding and see that we work hard to keep this as a very safe and reputable mode of transportation. This is an unusual occurrence and when a suspect commits a crime like this on a Metro bus, they must be brought to justice.” Transit Services Bureau detectives are asking the public’s assistance in identifying the suspect. If you see the suspect, remember he is considered armed and dangerous. Do not approach him. Call 9-1-1. A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Monterey Park police department special traffic enforcement campaign targeting traffic safety The Monterey Park Police Department will be conducting a special Traffic Safety Enforcement Operation on Thursday, December 19, 2013. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas where officers have responded to frequent collisions cracking down on driving and pedestrian violations that cause collisions, injuries and fatalities. Motorist failing to yield to pedestrians and those walking into traffic are a serious safety concerns that puts everyone on the road at risk. For the most recent release of data of 2010, 578 people have been killed and 11,429 se-

Officers remind motorist to slow down and obey posted speed limits, signs and signals; stay alert and always give pedestrians the right-of-way. Those on foot should always use crosswalks, use sidewalks, walk facing traffic where there are no sidewalks, and never walk into traffic. If you are walking in crosswalks, always watch for motorist who may not see you. In short, expect the unexpected while crossing

This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Rep. Schiff on Newtown shooting: we must keep pushing for gun safety Friday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank), a former federal prosecutor and advocate for gun safety legislation, released the following statement to mark the one year anniversary on Saturday of the shootings at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school, urging Congress to take up commonsense gun violence reform legislation: “One year after the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary that took the lives of twenty children and six teachers, Congress has compounded the tragedy by failing to take up any commonsense gun measures. Congressional failure to respond to the wave of gun violence and mass shootings that have continued unabated since that terrible day last De-

cember is a sad indictment of our system. Close to two hundred more children have been shot to death since Newtown – how many more will it take? “The American people want commonsense reforms passed now, like universal background checks for all gun purchases, an assault weapons ban, and legislation to give all victims of gun violence their day in court." Background: Rep. Schiff is a member of the Congressional Gun Violence Taskforce, has sponsored the Equal Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act, and is a co-sponsor of bipartisan legislation to institute universal background checks sponsored by Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Peter King (R-NY).

Assemblyman Mike Gatto Continued from page 1 ment. "This is a great way for people to have a voice in their government," said Gatto. "Too often, special-interest groups draft legislation. In contrast, 'crowdsourcing' a bill on the Wiki platform will allow for a fully transparent brainstorming, drafting, and editing process that will incorporate ideas from a large group of people. The collective wisdom of the public will choose the final product." The effort is designed to perfect other citizen-participation mechanisms that are flawed. For example, the Petitions.WhiteHouse. Gov site allows citizens to propose broad concepts, but has no teeth, in that the public cannot directly draft legislative text, and there is no commitment by the government to act. On the other side of the spectrum, many reformers (including Assemblyman Gatto) believe that California's Ballot Initiative process is too strong, because inflexible initiatives can tie the hands of elected officials in perpetuity. In contrast, Gatto's Wiki process takes advantage of the ubiquity of the Internet to allow vast numbers of people to participate in their government from the comfort of their homes, and allows other members of the public to see exactly how the process unfolds. Thus, it is a way to effect real change, but the ideas will also get fully vetted through the normal legislative committee process after Gatto introduces the bill.

To narrow down the submissions in this first trial of the process, Gatto is asking bill drafters to focus their proposals on changes to the California probate code. This subject matter was selected because it is one where large numbers of specialists exist with an interest in participating (lawyers, CPAs, etc.), but also, since almost everyone has had some experience in handling the death of a loved one, large numbers of the public are also likely to have an opinion on how California's relevant laws could be improved. Those interested in participating should visit www.MikeGatto.wikispaces. com. Once there, users can see what other people have proposed, propose bill text themselves, edit what others have proposed, and view the history of the entire process -- just like a Wikipedia entry. Assemblyman Gatto will introduce whatever consensus emerges by the State Legislature's bill-introduction deadline, which is in early February 2014. Mike Gatto is the Chairman of the Appropriations Committee in the California State Assembly. He represents Burbank, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Montrose, and the Los Angeles neighborhoods of Atwater Village, East Hollywood, Franklin Hills, Hollywood Hills, Los Feliz, and Silver Lake. www.asm. ca.gov/gatto

You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (714) 730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site WWW.LPSASAP. COM, using the file number assigned to this case 00977-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-730-2727 or visit this Internet Web site www.ndscorp. com/sales, using the file number assigned to this case 13-31307-JP-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale.
