California ban on concealed weapons overturned by court According to a report by the Associated Press on Thursday, a divided federal appeals court struck down California’s concealed weapons rules, saying they violate the Second Amendment right to bear arms. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said that California is wrong to require applicants to show good cause to receive a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Hit-and-run victim and amputee to “finish the ride” that almost killed him On Sunday, February 17, 2013, Damian Kevitt was struck by a mini-van while on his bicycle, and dragged close to a quartermile down the Interstate 5 Freeway in Los Angeles. The collision resulted over twenty broken bones and the amputation of Kevitt’s right leg. Now, one year later, Kevitt, working with the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition (LACBC), is returning to his bicycle for a charity ride he organized called Finish the Ride. The event, which will be held on Sunday, April 27, 2014, will raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF) and LACBC. It aims to raise awareness of Los Angeles’ hit-and-run epidemic. Kevitt has been working closely with the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, California State Assemblyman Mike Gatto, and Los Angeles City Councilman Tom LaBonge to organize Finish the Ride, which has grown into a movement to help make the streets of Los Angeles safe and fun for all bicyclists. “The only way I can bring closure to what happened to me is by taking the bad that occurred and turning it into something good – not just for one or

two others but for my city of LA,” said Kevitt. Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles), who authored legislation last year that increases the

statute of limitations on hitand-runs, and whose staff organized a canvassing effort to catch Kevitt’s assailant, has introduced new legislation this year to in-

Mike Gatto comments on fatal hit and run in Silver Lake

Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) issued the following comment regarding a recent hit-and-run accident that killed a man in Silver Lake. “The brutality of this tragedy is felt deeply by our community. The senselessness of this death is compounded by the fact that a second driver struck the victim and also fled the scene. Our community will not stand for the reckless disregard of human life. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family.” According to police, the male victim was crossing Riverside Drive just south of Fletcher Drive around 10 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound on Riverside Drive. Black history parade brings community together

Pasadena’s 32nd annual Black History Parade and Festival was be held Saturday, February 15. One longest-running Black History parades in California,   this year’s theme was “Black History: A Legacy for the Present and Our Future.” One of the most perceptible and positive sides to the parade ( aside from the over 70 entries) was how the Pasadena Police interacted with the crowds and in turn received encouraging feedback. Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez and several high ranking officers walked the parade route, handed out stickers to children and

talked with residents in Northwest Pasadena where there has been considerable acrimony in the past. The newfound confidence in their police force was ‘ remarkable ‘ said one bystander mid-way through the parade . Hugs and cooperation were the hallmarks of this year’s parade. The overwhelming support for Pasadena PD was enormously obvious. One motorcycle officer pulled up to a group of parade watches near Washington and a woman jumped up and gave him a hug which was returned in kind.

Buyer beware-car jacking suspect may try selling stolen car to innocent buyer

A Palmdale man who had offered his vehicle for sale on Craig’s List was carjacked at gunpoint by the male suspect who was posing as a buyer.  The suspect first contacted the victim in response to the Craig’s List ad approximately five days prior. After a test drive, the suspect asked if the victim had the Certificate of Title (pink slip). When the victim said he did not, but could get it, the suspect told the victim he would return when he had the pink slip.  On Tuesday, the suspect showed up at the victim’s home unannounced. The suspect confirmed the victim had the pink slip and asked for another test drive. After a short drive, the suspect stopped the car, pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded the victim’s cell phone and Certificate of Title. Fearing for his life, the victim relinquished the items. The suspect then ordered the victim from the vehicle, telling him he would return and kill him if he notified police.  Since the suspect will not be able to register the vehicle with the Department of Motor Vehicles, it is suspected that he intends to use the Certificate of Title to sell it to an innocent party, unaware of the theft.  The vehicle is described as a gold, 2010 Toyota Corolla with a Los Angeles Lakers license plate frame, 18” black

rims, and California license plate #6SJN245.  The suspect is described as a male Hispanic about 25 years old, 5’08”, 200 pounds, with brown hair and unknown eye color. He was wearing a black shirt, denim pants, and black, white, and red Air Jordan shoes. He was also wearing glasses with yellow frames.  If the vehicle or suspect is seen, call your local police agency.  Citizens are reminded to use extreme caution when buying or selling vehicles through on-line sources. Sellers must be cautious about inviting “buyers” to their home and buyers must be cautious about meeting “sellers” with large sums of money.  Agreeing to only meet the other party in the parking lot of your local police station may help weed out potential criminals. If the other party has any reason to avoid that venue, one should wonder why. However, your local police agency may not be able to guarantee that a vehicle is not stolen. This is because expert car thieves can change the vehicle identification numbers (VIN) in a manner that is nearly undetectable to people, other than specially-trained investigators.  If there is any question, the California Highway Patrol can be contacted for VIN verification services.

Burbank Police offer safety tips following Mountain Lion sighting On January 29, 2014, a mountain lion was spotted near the 3000 block of Wedgewood Lane in Burbank. This bulletin is intended to alert the community of the sighting and to provide precautions to keep residents and their pets safe. The following safety tips have been provided by the California Department of Fish and Game: Do not feed deer; it is illegal in California and it will attract mountain lions. Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.

Do not allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active-dawn, dusk, and at night. Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums, and other potential mountain lion prey. Do not leave small children or pets outside unattended. Install motion-sensitive lighting around the house. Do not hike, bike, or jog alone. Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active-dawn, dusk, and at night.

Do not approach a mountain lion If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects. Pick up small children. If attacked, fight back. If a mountain lion attacks a person, immediately call 911. For more information regarding Mountain Lion sightings or safety tips, contact Sergeant Darin Ryburn at 818-238-3240.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

in Westfield, New Jersey with parents, Aldo and Julia, siblings, Elaine, Peter and Mary. She attended parochial schools there, and Mt. St. Mary College, Newburgh New York. There she met and married Army Staff Sergeant Richard Schmidt. They lived abroad five years; “Korea brought more appreciation of our great country and freedoms most take for granted,” Schmidt told the Commission. After retiring from teaching, Joan felt something was missing. County residents still were unaware of many services and didn’t know what was happening

in the area, so she resumed writing for the Mountain View News. Joan is on the Board of the Friends of Duarte and Live Oak Libraries and resides in Monrovia with husband Bob Clayton and children Karen and Richard.  For the past 28 years, the Commission has recognized women, who have worked to bring about social and economic change, served as outstanding role models for women, worked on behalf of women’s issues or demonstrated outstanding performance within their professions to further advocate women’s rights.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. GWP to expand customer engagement program with CEIVA energy residential customers to access comprehensive energy savings tools Glendale Water & Power (GWP) and CEIVA Energy, a utility-controlled home energy management system (HEMS) provider, today announced they will expand their customer engagement program. Based on the success of the initial deployment, GWP and CEIVA will work together to deliver additional energy savings tools to customers, including smart thermostats. The pilot program expansion will reach more than six times as many Glendale residential customers as in the initial deployment, helping GWP reach its energy efficiency, demand response and customer engagement goals.

“After seeing the impressive customer feedback from our initial deployment with CEIVA, expanding the program to help more Glendale residents reduce their energy costs was an easy decision,” said Steve Zurn, General Manger of GWP. “The next phase of the pilot program gives GWP more ways to engage with a larger customer base, by offering the addition of smart thermostats that gives customers the tools to reduce their energy usage. As a result, we’ll be able to offer the right mix of targeted programs to boost engagement around energy use and help our

customers reduce energy costs even farther.” Customers that are interested in being part of the expanded pilot program should contact Varsenik Avetisian at GWP, vavetisian@ci.glendale.ca.us. “CEIVA’s work with GWP proves that a compelling customer engagement platform is critical to helping utilities more effectively achieve their goals across a range of programs,” said CEIVA Energy CEO Dean Schiller. “GWP’s forwardthinking approach to energy engagement builds on our initial success to provide even more benefits to their customers and the Glendale community.”

Transgender student to play High School softball Continued from page 1 of Southern California, according to the report. The new guidelines deal with gender identity participation and came into effect this past fall. Another move in Cordova-Goff’s favor was the passing of a new state law that took effect the first of year and is designed to “give all students a full range of opportunity.” Cordova-Goff, who stands 5-foot-8, has seen herself as a girl for many

years, according to the report. However, she said she has no current plans to undergo any “medical treatments or procedures” to deal with the issue of being transgender. She added it has taken her some time to get used to using the pronoun “she” when talking about herself, the report said. It has also taken time to get used to using the name “Pat,” the report said. While several local

coaches in the east San Gabriel Valley publicly stated their support for CordovaGoff, saying the fact that she is transgender does not affect how they will play against her, a few have muttered privately, wondering if Cordova-Goff truly made the team on merit, according to the report. gressively attacked the fire by deploying multiple hose lines and coordinating water drops with Los Angeles City Fire Department helicopters. At 11:27 a.m., a second alarm was requested by the incident commander. The blaze was upgraded again at 11:50 a.m. to a third alarm fire and required 110 firefighters to battle the flames. Knock down of the fire was declared at 1:10 p.m., 1 hour and 50 minutes after units were dispatched to the scene. Ten homes were evacuated during the firefight. The evacuation order was

lifted around 1 p.m. and residents were allowed to return to their homes. The cause of the fire is under investigation. The Glendale Fire Department reminds residents that it is critical to conduct brush clearance on their properties. Brush clearance is a crucial defense mechanism to protect homes from complete destruction from a brush fire. The Glendale Fire Department recommends residents to create a “Defensible Space” which is 100’ of space around a structure in which brush and debris have been removed.

the scene of any accident involving another person, even if the victim’s injuries are minor. As part of the Finish the Ride movement, Damian Kevitt has created a petition in support of Gatto’s legislation. At the city level, Councilman LaBonge offered a $25,000 reward from the city of Los Angeles for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person who hit Damian Kevitt. Despite the reward, Kevitt’s assailant remains at large. However, with an unbreakable spirit, the support of friends and family, and the help of the Challenged Athletes Foundation, Damian slowly regained his mobility and discovered a whole community of athletes who had overcome their own physical challenges. The mission of the Challenged Athletes Foun-

dation is to provide opportunities and support to people with physical disabilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. Their innovative programs provide grant funding to anyone with a physical disability for adaptive sports equipment like racing wheelchairs, handcycles, and running prosthetics as well as training and competition expenses. In addition, CAF’s Operation Rebound Program helps permanently injured veterans and first responders get from the frontline to the finish line. Wicked Pictures contract star, sexual wellness authority, and sex educator jessica drake, and Reign Productions owner/producer and adult star Tasha Reign, are scheduled to be featured guest speakers at UCLA. The panel, “Porn, Prostitution, and Censorship: The Politics of Empowerment,” will be held in Moore 100 hall, on Tuesday, February 18, from 7pm – 10pm. drake and Reign were invited to be discussants on an academic panel presented by the Social Awareness Network for Activism through Art (SANAA) in honor of Eve Ensler’s V-Day Organization. Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” is an annual presentation on the UCLA campus, and includes additional dialogue between students, educators, and media luminaries to discuss women’s issues. For more information, visit the event’s Facebook page: https:// www.facebook.com/ events/637459086290655/. Media interested in attending the panel discussion may contact pr@fineassmarketing.com for more information. Tasha Reign is one of UCLA’s most renowned students, as documented by her school paper, The Daily Bruin. “I’m extremely thrilled SANAA has invited me to speak on this panel,” says Tasha. “As a UCLA women’s studies major, and a performer, producer, and director in the adult industry, I feel I can

provide a unique view for students curious about how current media views of strong female sexuality can empower women. I’m looking forward to speaking with everyone attending the discussion and hearing all sides about this very important topic.” “jessica will also add great insight through her experiences as an adult actress, philanthropist, and sex educator,” continues Moore.  “I’m honored to be invited to speak with students on UCLA’s campus,” says jessica drake. “I absolutely love when I can speak with people, especially students, about the adult industry, its relationship with media and the general public, and how it can empower women in the new millennium. I am looking forward to meeting everyone at UCLA and discussing how we can all grow into strong, self-aware women.” jessica drake is a highly sought-after sexual health and wellness speaker who lectures at universities, teaches seminars, and runs workshops globally. Through her series of workshops and seminars, and her line of instructional DVDs, jessica drake’s Guide to Wicked Sex, jessica teaches people to explore their sexuality in a fun, safe, and responsible way. She teaches how to set boundaries, emphasize consent, and still have wonderful sex while communicating effectively with partners. Joining Reign and

drake will be Jennifer Moorman and Dr. Christopher Mott. Moorman is a Ph.D. candidate in Cinema and Media Studies at UCLA and a lecturer at Otis College of Art and Design. Her dissertation, Women on Top: The Work of Female Pornographers and (S)experimental Filmmakers, examines the gender politics of the adult video industry and associated marginal and experimental film production cultures, with a focus on the contributions and experiences of women filmmakers. Dr. Mott is a Distinguished Lecturer at UCLA, currently teaching a seminar entitled, “Pornography and the Politics of Sexual Representation.”  “The discussion surrounding the power dynamics of prostitution, the accommodation of sex, and the objectification and censorship of the female body have long divided feminist theorists and activists,” continues Mohammed. “Through this panel, we hope to foster a dialogue about feminism and the porn industry, and are eagerly anticipating Tasha and jessica’s participation on February 18.” “(The porn panel) brings a more academic flavor to V-Day because we get to engage UCLA faculty in the movement with discussions like this,” adds Moore, who is a third-year art history and gender studies student and producer of SANAA’s “The Vagina Monologues,” in a Daily Bruin article. “Sex work is such a poignant and vilified facet of feminist theory, and it divides a lot of theorists as to who it empowers.” Many events held during the SANAA V-Day campaign, including the “Porn, Prostitution, and Censorship: The Politics of Empowerment” panel, are free to attend, while admission to the production of “The Vagina Monologues” later in the week is on a donation-only basis. The proceeds will be given to two beneficiaries this year. Both organizations, A Window between Worlds and Peace over Violence, advocate for survivors of domestic violence. New screening test found antidepressant Paxil promotes estrogen, breast cancer City of Hope researchers develop test to assess effect of more than 1,500 chemicals on estrogen

A team of researchers at City of Hope has developed a screening assay that can quickly assess up to 1,536 compounds’ effect on estrogen activity in the body. The test can also evaluate whether chemicals act as inhibitors of aromatase, an enzyme linked to breast cancer that converts androgen to estrogen. The results verifying this novel screening method— called AroER tri-screen— are published ahead of print online in Toxicological Sciences. The test can screen for more than 1,500 compounds with each run, enabling scientists to rapidly assess and identify the estrogen-disrupting impact of common chemicals. Even everyday chemicals have the potential to increase, or potentially decrease, the risk of breast cancer, researchers say.  “Approximately 70 percent of breast cancers are sensitive to estrogen, and exposure to estrogendisrupting compounds — especially during the critical periods of pregnancy, childhood and adolescence — can have an irreversible impact on still-developing bodies,” said Shiuan Chen,

Ph.D., professor and chair of City of Hope’s Department of Cancer Biology and lead author of the study. “Thus, it makes sense to develop this test, which can assess many chemicals at once, to help us quickly identify which environmental compounds are disrupting estrogen functions.” The screening method uses a microplate, a special plate containing miniature test tubes known as wells. In the wells are specially cultured estrogen-sensitive breast cancer cells treated to detect either estrogenpromoting or estrogensuppressing properties of chemicals. The researchers collaborated with the Tox21 program (a national effort to develop methods to screen for hazardous chemicals) to amplify the number of wells in the microplate — from the original 96 to 1,536 — greatly increasing the number of assessments each test can process.  In addition to confirming AroER tri-screen’s effectiveness, the researchers found that antifungal medications oxiconazol (Oxistat) and bifonazole (Canespor) exhibited aromatase-inhib-

iting properties, while the antidepressant paroxetine (Paxil) acted as an estrogen promoter. “The paroxetine finding helps explain previous studies showing that it reduces tamoxifen therapy’s effectiveness,” Chen said. “And it has implications for patients with estrogensensitive breast cancer who are on other medications.” Meanwhile, the oxiconazol and bifonazole findings mean that these drugs may have potential in treating estrogen-sensitive breast cancers by inhibiting aromatase and thus levels of estrogen in the body. Given these promising findings, Chen said that he hopes the AroER tri-screen assay will be be used to assess the estrogen-disrupting properties of more compounds, including medications, environmental pollutants and common household chemicals.  The project was supported by the California Breast Cancer Research Program (17UB-8701) with the goal to develop such a screening system to identify environmental chemicals with impact on breast cancer development.

DA Lacey unveils program to help Victims of sex trafficking Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey announced today an innovative new diversion program aimed at getting young victims of sex trafficking off the streets and out of harm’s way.  Until now, minors between the ages of 12 to 17 who were arrested for sex-related crimes were deemed juvenile delinquents. Between 2000 and 2010, the Juvenile Division of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed 2,188 petitions against minors caught soliciting or loitering for solicitation.  “We believe that minors who engage in sex for pay are victims not criminals,” District Attorney Lacey said during a news conference. “We believe that we should help these children, not detain them.  First Step is a diversion program aimed at providing

victims of sex trafficking a chance to rebuild their lives before they are charged, appear in court and are placed on probation.  Lacey said the District Attorney’s Office is joining forces with the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Los Angeles County Probation Department and the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. First Step will be rolled out in two Juvenile Division Branch Offices – Sylmar and Compton. These juvenile offices were selected due to the volume of arrests and because those girls arrested actually reside in that community.  For a period of one year, minors who agree to enter the First Step program will receive referral services, such as crisis intervention,

sexual assault and mental health counseling, substance abuse treatment, education and other appropriate social services.  The District Attorney’s Office has partnered with four nonprofit, communitybased organizations to provide a wide array of social services. Lacey thanked the YWCA Greater Los Angeles, Saving Innocence, the Valley Trauma Center in Van Nuys and the Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking for their generous support and willingness to offer programs to help rescue and redirect victims of sex trafficking.  “I especially want to thank Faye Washington, president and CEO of the YWCA Greater Los Angeles for its $25,000 contribution,” Lacey said. “This money will be used to provide services to First Step participants.”
