Matt Denny’s and Del Sol Salon hair dressing salon co-sponsored the 13th annual event for St. Baldrick’s last Wednesday. With the support of the Arcadia Fire and Police Departments, Holy Angels School and many other clubs and individuals, Matt Denny’s has helped raise over $450,000.00 since 2001. Heads shaved officially according to the website is a little mislead-

ing as many firefighters jumped in and just shaved, so we probably had 160 heads shaved. Total Dollar amount as of this morning was $67,072.00 and there are still checks coming in. On St. Baldrick’s Day, people shave their heads to raise funds for pediatric cancer research. Marrs had a more personal reason than most. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives and jail deputies are still searching for 37-year old suspect Christopher Lee Brown, who escaped from the Inmate Reception Center Release area at approximately 10:00pm Wednesday, March 12, 2014. "As a result of the inmate’s actions, and that it appears that mandated security practices may not have been followed, the inmate was able to escape through the jail Inmate Reception Center release area door,” said Captain Mike Parker, Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. “Identified security concerns were immediately remedied,” he said. NASCAR at California Speedway a ‘knockout’ By Bill Harrington Fontana comes alive with another busy NASCAR weekend at the California Speedway. This was the 5th race of the season and the first time for California race fans to witness the new “knockout” qualifying rules. Matt Kenseth #20 won the Pole Friday and finished fourth on Sunday giving him a top 5 finish. Jeff Gordon sped to his pit during the first caution

and was tagged for a speeding violation. He restarted in 43rd place and worked his way back to the top 10 in only 39 laps. He seemed to have the fastest car of the day but the restarts continued to haunt him. His teammate Jimmie Johnson led the most laps, dominating the race. With six to go, Johnson had a flat that ripped his chances away at his home track. He ended the Please see page 3

Beverly Hills on March 29, 2014 Detained in the Desert parallels two completely different people: Sandi Sanchez, a second-generation dark skinned Latina, and Lou Becker, an inflammatory talk show radio host, whose lives converge in the Sonoran desert in Arizona. An Arizona cop racially profiles Sandi, who refuses to show her identification in protest. Her act of rebellion sets her on an unexpected course toward immigrant detention. Conversely, three siblings who have just suffered the loss of their brother due to a hate crime influenced by Lou’s racist radio talk show, kidnap him in hopes of seek-

ing justice. To get the kids to school and get to work on time, her weekdays begin at 5:45 a.m. and walked an average of 8 miles a day. All the children are involved in extracurricular activities — ballet at the community center, Boy Scouts, cross-country running. The parents either walk them there or take public transportation, which can be embarrassing for the kids. “Having a car here is a basic need, like food, shelter, and water,” says Elena. “It is not a luxury.” Although their current combined income is barely above the National Poverty Level, the family only relies on food from Foothill Unity Center and CalFresh funds to free some money for expenses. Recycled Rides is a nationwide community service project whereby members of the National Auto Body Council (NABC), including Seidner’s, donate vehicles to local families and service organizations in need. This “green” program, focused on vehicle and parts recycling, recruits insurers, paint suppliers, parts vendors and others to contribute to the project. Candidates, solicited from

the local community, must meet five criteria: 1) valid driver’s license; 2) ability to maintain vehicle shown by proof of income; 3) safe driving record, insurable; 4) financially challenged; and 5) doesn’t own good working vehicle. According to statistics by CAL FIRE, the state’s department of forestry and fire protection, the 5-year-average number of fires from January 1 until March 8 is set at 223. The year 2013 only showed a slightly above average fire activity of 223 fires in this this time range even though it is considered a dry year. During the same interval, the triple amount of the average, 665 fires, has been recorded for 2014. While recent dimensions of these fires destroyed 773 acres on average within the 2 months’ time frame, 1,388 acres were burned this year’s. CAL FIRE director, Ken Pimlott, noted: “We can’t recall when we have seen this level of fire activity early in this year. This is usually the time of year when much of the state is greening up. We haven’t even got into the months that histori-

cally are the worst in California – late August, September and October – so that’s a big red flag right there.” John Laird, the secretary for natural resources adds to this premonition: “This is going to be a fire season outside of any normal bounds. Anything could happen at any time.” CAL FIRE announced that it has “hired 125 supplemental firefighters in Northern California and extended seasonal firefighting forces in Southern California due to dry winter conditions.” Since many of the fires are sparked by powered agricultural equipment, residents are asked to only use their machines in the lower temperatures of the early morning and completely refrain from using them when it’s hot, dry and windy, especially on Red Flag Warning days. Instead of burning landscape debris outside, residents are also asked to take them to a green waste facility. Furthermore, CAL FIRE advises residents to clear dead weeds and vegetation, and remove leaves and needles from gutters. For the third year in a row, California has additionally enacted a Fire Prevention fee within the State Responsibility Area. $152.33 per habitable structure will help California prevent and suppress wildfires in areas where the state is financially responsible.

day with a 24th place finish. With Jimmie’s tire going flat and the race staying green, the 24 car was in the lead. As Gordon wound down a couple laps, cars were dropping fast. Three cars had tire issues and managed to get off the track without causing a caution. Unfortunately for Gordon, his luck would not hold. With only three laps left, yet a fourth flat causes a spin and a caution. The leaders hit the pits in preparation of a green, white, checker race waiting for them. With most cars getting fresh tires, the stage was set

for a wild restart that did not disappoint. Rookie Kyle Larson, who got his first Nationwide win on Saturday, came out of nowhere and tried to make a sweep of the weekend. He finished second behind Kyle Busch. Kurt Busch came in 3rd and Tony Stewart rounded off the top 5 with a 5th place finish. Gordon’s victory slipped away leaving him with a 13th place finish. Denny Hamlin did not race as a result of vision problems associated with a sinus infection. Sam Hornish JR. drove the #11 car and

finished 17th and Danica Patrick finished 14th, giving her a top 15 finish. The big issue on the track was tire wear. NASCAR allowed the crews to add more rear camber. The already low tire pressure coupled with the too much camber in the left-rear tires caused heavier tire wear on the tire’s outer edge which was apparent with 9 cautions during Sunday’s race. All in all, it was a weather perfect day for the sold out crowd to cheer their favorite drivers on to victory!

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Wanted: inmate escapes from jail Continued from page 1

Investigators believe that Brown impersonated another inmate in an effort to escape the jail. The escape was discovered when during the night, one of the many wristband counts that takes place in the jails revealed the inmate was not where he was supposed to be. This led to the search of the jail and ultimately the discovery of jail CCTV video showing the inmate leaving through the release area at 10 pm Wednesday, which confirmed that the inmate had escaped. Suspect Brown had been sentenced Wednesday to a four year jail term for a Burglary and Identity Theft case investigated by the Alhambra Police Department He is now wanted for felony escape from a jail facility. Brown is a transient

with no known address and has multiple prior arrests for theft related charges. Also, in 1997 he was arrested and later convicted for Assault with a Deadly Weapon in the San Luis Obispo area, and arrested for a Cohabitant/Spousal Assault in 2007 in the Santa Barbara area . Other areas where he has been arrested in are El Monte and Newport Beach. Brown is described as a male Black, 6’03”, 200 pounds. His booking photo and photos of him walking out of the jail release area have been made available. If you see Brown, do not approach him. Instead, contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. As part of a through systems review, the Inmate Reception Center, Twin

Towers Correctional Facility, and Men’s Central Jail were placed on lock-down throughout the day. Medical and mental health serves have continued to be provided for inmates. “A comprehensive review of jail systems, especially related to releases are continuing,” said Captain Parker. We are actively following leads in an effort to re-arrest this inmate. We are asking for the public’s assistance to help locate him. If you have any information please contact Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (323) 267-4800. By SHEL SEGAL If for no other reason, go to Island’s Burgers for the French fries. Cooked to a golden brown and well seasoned, these baskets of fries come bottomless and they are plentiful. And don’t be afraid to ask for your very own vat of ranch dressing. But, ah, yes, there is more to Islands than just fried spuds, said Stacie Reader. You should go to Island’s “because it’s fun. It’s a great atmosphere,” Reader said. From burgers to chicken sandwiches and everything else in between, Islands has a lot to offer, Reader said. “It’s great food,” she said. “We have a lot of signature items, like the Toucan. It’s a chicken sandwich with teriyaki sauce and pineapple. It’s an Island’s tradition.” She added there is a lot from the bar to choose from. “We have beach bowls you can’t find anywhere else,” she said. “We have our signature Long Island Ice Tea that you can’t find

anywhere else. It’ll get to you. It’s got the sweet taste, but it’s got the alcohol in there.” And if you’re looking for a drink, Reader said try Island’s for happy hour. “We actually have one of the best happy hours around,” she said. “We’re not really known for our happy hours, so that’s something we really want to get out there.” But the bar at Island’s does have one unique feature, Reader said. “Our bar is kid friendly,” Reader said. “You can go to the bar and sit with your children. There aren’t many bars where you can.” And where there are many desserts from which to try, Reader has one in mind she really recommends. “We have the best Kona pie,” she said. “The chocolate lava is really good, too, but I’d recommend the Kona pie. It’s got a mocha flavor to it.” But back to the fries. Reader said preparing a

day’s order of French fries is a major undertaking. “Nobody realizes what goes into our fries,” she said. “We literally have 50-pound sacks of potatoes come in. We rinse them three times or more. We cut them by hand daily. We blanch them. There’s a whole process to make sure they stay fresh during the day.” She added try the cheddar fries with ranch dressing or the chili fries with sour cream. And if you’ve never been to Island’s, Reader wants you to know this: “Try it. You’ll come back for sure. Our service is hands down the best.” There are two Island’s Burgers locations in Pasadena, one at Paseo Colorado and one in Hastings Ranch. Entrees and salads range between $7 and $15. PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

Interested in learning more? www.classicsleepcare.com

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. USC’s Trojan affiliates host successful ‘Get Crafty’ event at hillsides A little girl put the finishing touches on her brightly decorated picture frame and smiled broadly. A University of Southern California alumna dropped off construction paper and paints and then had her picture taken in a life-sized frame adorned with the Trojan “Fight On” slogan and the Trojan mascot. Children ate cupcakes decorated in USC colors of cardinal and gold. It was all part of the “Let’s Get Crafty with Hillsides” event held Saturday, March 22, at Hillsides’ main campus at 940 Avenue 64 in Pasadena for the children living in Hillsides’ residential treatment program. More than 20 volunteers of a San Gabriel Valley USC alumnae organization, the Trojan Affiliates, donated their

Saturday afternoon to making picture frames with the children and running an art supply drive. Community members had been asked to drop off art supplies such as paints, chalk, pastels, and drawing pads, throughout the afternoon. By the end of the day, some 30 children decorated picture frames and two large barrels were stacked with art supplies. “The event was a wonderful success,” said Laura Kelso, Hillsides director of community resources. “Art is a huge release for the children of Hillsides, and we are very thankful to the Trojan Affiliates for creating a day of fun for the children and for gathering art supplies that the children can use throughout the rest of the year.” The Trojan Affiliates

is a women’s alumni organization based in the San Gabriel Valley dedicated to developing fundraising projects to provide scholarships for deserving USC students and contributing to the advancement of education. The “Let’s Get Crafty” event was part of USC’s third annual Alumni Day of SCervice, an international effort that gives the University’s alumni and friends opportunities to participate in local service projects within their respective communities. Hillsides, headquartered in Pasadena, is a premier provider dedicated to improving the overall wellbeing and functioning of vulnerable children, youth, and families living in Los Angeles. Hazel was declared cancer free at the beginning of this month and is in the long process of working her way back to health. Being cancer-free is just the first step back to full health. Chemo leaves lasting side effects. Her hair has begun to regrow. When she first started to lose her hair, her older sister Audrey had herself given a crew cut in solidarity. How many 11 years old sixth grade girls are willing to do make their little sister feel better? And now her grandfather, “Pop”, has shaved his head. It is a family of high and tight hair cuts now. Started about 12 years ago by some New York insurance executives, the St. Baldrick’s annual fundraising event has grown exponentially in popularity. Each year 160,000 children are diagnosed with cancer. Cancer is the number one disease killer of children in the U.S. and Canada.

On a national level, the St Baldrick’s foundation has thus far raised $13,756,213 this year alone according to a check on their website. Locally, at Matt McSweeny’s popular speakeasy, Matt Denny’s Ale House, the 11th annual event to shave heads in solidarity with children suffering from cancer being treated at City of Hope, will attract a lot more people than in years past. The St. Baldrick’s Foundation and Matt Denny’s host the head-shaving event annually to raise funds and awareness for life-saving childhood cancer research. Last year, customers at Matt Denny raised over $53,000 for the fundraiser when all the pennies were counted. It could easily be another record year for Matt Denny’s and St Baldrick’s. Why all the shaved heads? St. Baldrick’s is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for childhood cancer research by hosting worldwide head-shaving events where volunteers collect pledges to shave their heads in solidarity with kids with cancer, raising money to fund childhood cancer research. Members of the Arcadia Fire and Police Department will be shaving

their heads to honor the more than 160,000 kids diagnosed each year worldwide. Children from the City of Hope, who will arrive in style on fire engines thanks to the support of the local fire department, are the event’s special guests of the night and will be helping take swipes of hair off the local firefighters and police officers’ heads. Hair Stylists from Del Sol Salon & Spa will be serving as volunteer barbers. The event will also include live music, an ice cream sundae station and food throughout the evening. Raffle prizes will be drawn throughout the event as well. For more information, check out the event page on the St. Baldrick’s website. Matt McSweeny has been a consistent partner with St Baldrick’s having the event at his restaurant/ pub every year without fail. Mc Sweeny said it is a real “community builder” giving people in all walks of life a chance to get to know one another in a fun, friendly environment and at the same time raising a tremendous amount of cash for research. Over 78% of monies raised at St. Baldrick’s goes directly into research. 19% goes back into fundraising and only 3% for administrative expenses.

Montebello beats Keppel 7-1 in CIF league game Friday By SHEL SEGAL Starting pitcher Nick Marquez was shelled for seven runs on six hits through five innings as the Mark Keppel High baseball team lost to host Montebello High, 7-1 on Friday in a CIF Southern Section Almont League game. Marquez gave up two runs in the first inning, three runs in the third and two runs in the fifth en route to the loss. He also gave up four doubles on the afternoon as his record fell to 0-1. Picking up the win for the Oilers and improving his record to 2-2 was righty Jonathan Romero. Romero pitched a complete game, scattering seven hits while striking out eight and walking just one batter. Romero said everything pretty much came together for him on the mound. “I mostly changed my speeds and hit my spots,” he said. “That’s really it. The defense did its work and that’s pretty much it.”

Keppel coach Ryan Nunez praised the Oilers for beating the Aztecs. “Montebello’s the story,” Nunez said. “They brought it. All the kudos goes to them. They were ready to play and we weren’t. We’ll fix it. I promise you that. We’ll fix it.” Nunez added the team was stymied by Romero. “We weren’t ready for a standard fastball pitcher with a bender with two strikes,” he said. “That’s my fault. I got to get them ready better.” Montebello coach Manny Arana was happy with Romero’s performance. “He threw a lot of strikes early in the count,” Arana said. “He challenged them and made them put it in play. They put it in play and let our defense work. That way he didn’t throw to many pitches.” Arana added his team was able to hit off of Mar-

quez pretty well. “He had trouble throwing that second pitch for a strike so we just honed in on the fastball,” Arana said. “When a pitcher just throws a fastball it’s hard to keep someone under wraps for seven innings.” Despite having trouble on the mound, Marquez had a good day with the bat. He went 3-for-3 with two doubles and scored the Aztecs’ lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Montebello took the early 2-0 in the first inning. After second baseman Rich Santoscoy singled to left and shortstop Andrew Jimenez reached base on an error by Keppel second baseman Ivan Berumen, Oilers third baseman Adam Rubio knocked them both in with a double to left field. Mike Gatto’s bill to force hit-and-run offenders off california roadways passes transportation committee Assemblyman Mike Gatto’s (D-Los Angeles) legislation to increase penalties for those who flee the scene of an accident cleared another legislative hurdle today, passing the Assembly Transportation Committee by a vote of 13-1. Gatto's bill, AB 1532, would expand hit-andrun penalties to include automatic license suspension for motorists who flee the scene of any accident involving another person. “The only way to know if you hurt someone is to stop. The only way to get someone medical help is to stop,” said Assemblyman Gatto. “Allowing drivers who don’t stop to keep their license, adds insult to their

victim’s injuries.” Right now, there are few consequences for hitand-run offenders whose victims are lucky enough to walk away with only minor injuries. The problem with current law is that it sets the penalty based on how bad the victim’s injuries end up being, and there is no way to know that at the moment of impact. The Committee passed the legislation as publicsafety organizations and hitand-run victims like Damian Kevitt announced renewed efforts to call attention to Los Angeles’ hit-and-run epidemic. Kevitt survived a brutal hit-and-run in Gatto’s district last year, which re-

sulted in dozens of broken bones and the amputation of one of Kevitt’s legs. He recently announced that he would return to his bicycle on April 27, 2014 for a charity event called “Finish the Ride,” which he organized with the help of Gatto’s office, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, and the office of Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge. “Victims deserve to know that cowards who drive recklessly, and purposefully avoid responsibility, can no longer drive the streets,” said Gatto. “AB 1532 is a sensible fix to the law that will lead people to think twice before leaving the scene of an accident.”
