Schiff, colleagues urging executive order prohibiting discrimination against LGBT Americans Wednesday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and 195 House and Senate colleagues sent a letter to President Barack Obama urging him to sign an executive order banning contractors from receiving federal contracts unless they have a policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Eighth Annual Norooz a shining example of peace and harmony

Norooz in Pasadena, a project of Narooz, Inc., a non-secular celebration of the Persian New Year and beginning of Spring, has become more than an annual tradition in the San Gabriel Valley. And now, for the eighth year in a row, under the caring hands of Norooz in Pasadena founder Dr. Nazee Rofagha, DC, who maintains both Family Chiropractic Wellness Center and a resi-

dence here, celebrated and promoted Iranian arts and its rich culture along with the non-Iranian community last week. This year’s festivities included live entertainment including a traditional Iranian percussion performance by Erfan Nazemzadeh with Flamenco guitarist Amir Mafakher. The evening highlights also included a dance performance by Djanbazian Dance Academy and

very likely that you heard this at least once Monday after Southern California was struck by a moderate earthquake which rocked many of us out of golden slumber. Although this most recent ‘quake was comparatively small, it serves as a prompt and was early morning wake-up call if you will, to be prepared. The 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred 4.97mi NW of Westwood Monday morning around 6:30 AM. Several local news reporters were on the air when

Although many people on social media made light of their actions, they did exactly what they should have done. When an earthquake hits police and firefighters advise you to… Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Parks Department will host the Pacific Park Artificial Turf Grand Re-Opening on Saturday, March 29 at 12:00 pm! The ribbon cutting ceremony will showcase exhibition games and reintroduce the community to a great local resource, adding another gem to Glendale’s 45 park facilities. The celebration will take place at 501 South Pacific Avenue. The 10.5-acre campus, including a park, library, community center, and elementary school, was the first joint-use develop-

School District in 2003. The park includes a little league ball-field, picnic area, multi-purpose sports field, multi-purpose court, children’s play area, and an outdoor pool. The Pacific Park Branch Library is operated jointly by the City and GUSD and serves the Edison Elementary School as well as the neighboring community. The Pacific Pool (although not a joint use facility) was completed in May 2011, providing yet another much needed

Purse snatching while gassing up latest crime There is a new crime trend taking place nationwide called "Sliders." These thieves are evasively sliding into victim's cars and snatching valuables through open windows and unlocked doors, in what police are calling "sliding." Thieves often operate at gas stations while customers are causally pumping gasoline. When the opportunity arises, thieves snatch purses and other valuables before fleeing the scene. A vehicle is not a secure location for your property. Criminals are targeting all parts of town while watching for women who leave their purses unattended, leave the vehicle doors unlocked and are distracted. While the woman focuses on the gas pump, the criminal crouches down, opens the passenger's side door and grabs her purse. The entire crime takes only a few seconds. That's a "slider" at work. Schiff, colleagues urging executive order prohibiting discrimination against LGBT Americans Continued from page 1

LGBT status to millions of additional Americans. As a Vice-Chair of the LGBT Equality Caucus, Rep. Schiff joined with the Caucus leadership to gather support for the letter. Schiff led a similar letter to the President in 2013 and is an original co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). Schiff stated: “While the House leadership continues to drag its feet by refusing to bring the Employment Non-Discrimination Act -- which passed with strong bipartisan support in the Senate, -- to the floor for a vote, it’s time for the President to act. Last year, I led a letter to the President asking him to issue an Executive Order prohibiting federal contractors from discriminating based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This letter renews our efforts and sends a strong signal that it’s time to use all avenues to fight discrimination against LGBT Americans, with or without Congress.” Dear Mr. President, We are writing to urge you to fulfill the promise in your State of the Union address to make this a “year of action” and build upon the momentum of 2013 by signing an executive order banning federal contractors from engaging in employment discrimination against lesbian, gay,

bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans. As you have said before, “now is the time to end this kind of discrimination, not enable it.” As we continue to work towards final passage of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) with strong bipartisan support, we urge you to take action now to protection millions of workers across the country from the threat of discrimination simply because of who they are or who they love. We are committed to doing all that we can in Congress to get ENDA to your desk this year; however, there is no reason you cannot immediately act by taking this important step. This executive order would provide LGBT people with another avenue in the federal government they could turn to if they were the victim of employment discrimination by a federal contractor. When combined with ENDA, these non-discrimination protections would parallel those that have been in place for decades on the basis of race, sex and religion. An executive order covering LGBT employees would be in line with a bipartisan, decades-long commitment to eradicating taxpayer-funded discrimination in the workplace. In 1941, President Roosevelt prohibited discrimination

in defense contracts on the bases of race, creed, color, or national origin. In subsequent executive orders, Presidents Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson expanded these protections to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to discriminate. In addition, most of the largest government contractors – companies like Boeing, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin – have LGBT non-discrimination policies in place. They adopted them because business leaders recognize that discrimination is bad for the bottom line. Finally, time is of the essence. Even with an executive order in place, full implementation of these protections will require regulations to be developed and finalized, a process that will take many months, if not longer, to fully put in place. Issuing an executive order prohibiting discrimination against LGBT workers in federal contracts would build on the significant progress for LGBT rights made during your time as President and would further your legacy as a champion for LGBT equality. We urge you to act now to prevent irrational, taxpayer-funded workplace discrimination against LGBT Americans. Sincerely, Adam Schiff

All Souls School is offering an Open House to show off its dual language immersion program on Sunday, March 23rd from 10 am to 2 pm. Students and their families will begin the morning at 9:00 am celebrating Mass at All Souls Church then proceeding over to the school to help visitors tour the school and answer questions. Special events will highlight the Spanish language and culture. Students will be reading poems in Spanish and English. A flamenco dancer will perform in traditional costume. And there will be tours of the three different languages classrooms. "Everyone is invited to join us for an exciting time, whether you are interested in learning how our language immersion program works for children, or just to enjoy our special guests," welcomes Ms. Carrie Fuller, school principal. Parents are invited to bring children ages 4 to 7 years old (transitional kindergarten through second grade) to come visit the classrooms and playground. All Souls School is

the first school in the Los Angeles Archdiocese, and one of only twenty Catholic schools in the U.S. offering dual language immersion. It is also unique because it is the only Catholic school in the nation offering two separate tracks: SpanishEnglish, and MandarinEnglish. Parents select which language track their child will follow. Students are challenged with a rigorous curriculum in a nurturing environment. All Souls prepares today's children to become tomorrow's leaders and offers a Christ-centered education. Credentialed teachers focus on the education of the whole child with the goal of leading students to become individuals who are ready for the challenges of the 21st century with the ability to read, write, think, and communicate in two languages. All Souls School is located at 29 So. Electric Avenue in Alhambra, California 91801. For more information, call (626) 2825695; email: principal.allsouls@gmail.com ; or visit the school's new website: www. allsouls.la.

In the last three years Dr. Robin Holmes has received numerous requests to help pet owners say goodbye using her in home pet euthanasia services. In home pet euthanasia is rising in popularity as more people become aware of the options available to them. “I believe that if more

families knew about it they would choose in home pet euthanasia, but making that choice is always a very personal decision.” According to Dr. Holmes, the relationship between people and their pets has evolved in the last couple of decades. Most people now consider pets to

be family members and constant companions sharing in our adventures and our challenges. She offers guidance and support while educating the families about the medical issues their pet is facing. Dr. Holmes opens the door to allow the family to use their intuition and go the route of pet euthanasia when it makes the most sense for the pet and family. Dr. Holmes graduated from North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1991. From the beginning she often offered to travel to client’s homes for that final day when an owner had decided to say goodbye to a beloved family pet. Dr. Holmes goes beyond the euthanasia process by offering resources for adults and children such as literature, grief loss counselors and hotlines, as well as a candle lighting memorial on her website. More information can be found at the http://giftsofpeacehomepeteuthanasia. com/ Web site. Appointments are flexible, including evening and weekend hours.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

New columnist graces Beacon Media pages Dear Readers, Recently I had the honor of joining the paper as a regular contributor. I’m excited about this opportunity and hope to serve you and the community well through my columns. As an executive coach and leadership consultant, the nature of my columns will center on leadership and teams. The purpose is to give you, the reader, tools, information, approaches and resources for leading

effectively and for working well in a team. I’m excited to let you know that the columns will appear on the first and third week of every month. The column running during the first week will focus on the leader him/herself, while the one running during the third week will center on the team. My background includes experience as an executive coach, leadership consultant, workshop facilita-

tor and speaker. I also have a doctorate in organizational leadership from Pepperdine University. I’m an alumna of Leadership Pasadena and a volunteer with the Tournament of Roses Association. I hope that whether you’re a leader or on a team (or both!) that you’ll find value in the information and perspectives that I share. Best, Heather Serving leaders, serving teams.

Is your team running on empty? by Heather Backstrom, Ed.D. Are you leading a team that isn’t fully charged up? Does it seem that your team just goes through the day, gets the work done and gets the heck out of there? As a leader you want a skilled team that’s engaged, committed and running on a full tank of enthusiasm. That is, you want an optimally performing team. Optimal team performance just doesn’t happen. First, it takes a wise leader to step back and take a moment to realize that something just isn’t right. Perhaps you’ve noticed that not only isn’t your team using their skills to their full potential, but they don’t seem enthusiastic. Mayve they are getting the basic job done but they’re not going the extra mile and putting all of their skills to use. Their passion also seems absent. It seems their heart just isn’t in it. And that shows in the work. Every leader wants optimal employee performance and engagement. Employees who like their work, enjoy their team members, and have the opportunity to regularly use their talents and skills are generally happy, engaged employees who perform well. Let’s look at some strategies to achieve this. Begin with an individual approach by honing in on the natural skills and talents of your employees. Aim to uncover the kind of work that generates meaning and

fulfillment for each employee and then strive to give them assignments that foster that. For instance, if you know that Katherine enjoys writing, then find ways give her more assignments involving writing. Include her in creating the company’s annual report or in developing policies or editing marketing materials. In addition, it’s always a good idea to simply ask employees what kind of work they find meaningful. Once you’ve asked, then collaborate together on a plan to incorporate that work in their every day job. Relinquish decision making. Effective teams not only perform important work they are also trusted to make weighty decisions. When teams are not empowered to make decisions they feel handcuffed and untrusted. As a leader, you can reverse this by giving over certain decisions to them. This will show that you trust them and have faith in their abilities. Handing over the reins though, doesn’t have to mean you let go completely. You may want to give them some guidelines, have them provide you with periodic updates and keep you apprised of outcomes. Infuse innovation into your team. Employees thrive in creative and innovative environments. Encourage employees to challenge the status quo, come up with seemingly outrageous ideas and pose

“what if” scenarios at every turn. The next time you and your team are trying to solve a problem, don’t just jump on the first plausible answer. Instead, challenge your team to come with the multiple “right” answers - - times 10! Use different techniques to generate creativity like holding a meeting outside, posing the problem as a benefit or doing a visioning exercise. Say “thank you.” Say it every day. Make it a point to go up to an employee to thank them for something they did. Be specific about their contribution and the impact it made. Advancing Justice - LA releases report on Asian Americans, diversity, and higher education As part of a coalition of Asian American and Pacific Islander civil rights and higher education organizations, Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Los Angeles has released a brief report entitled Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in California: How Higher Education Diversity Benefits Our Communities. A one-page summary of the report was also released, including translations of the one-page summary into Chinese and Korean. Citing extensive data and other research, the report provides information on: Proposition 209, standardized tests such as the SAT, the underrepresentation of many Asian American and Pacific Islander ethnic groups in higher education, the benefits of diversity in education, and the need to look at larger is-

sues affecting public higher education. “The issue of higher education is a very complex one for California’s diverse communities,” said Stewart Kwoh, executive director of Advancing Justice - LA. “The facts and data in this report paint a more accurate picture of the issues Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders face in accessing higher education. It also sheds light on other important questions that we as Californians must address together, such as the longterm disinvestment in our state’s public higher education system.” This report is one in a series of educational materials and proposals that Advancing Justice - LA is releasing in coming days and weeks dealing with expanding college oppor-

tunity as well as addressing the role of affirmative action in higher education. All materials, including the report, summary, and translated summaries in Chinese and Korean are available from the Advancing JusticeLA website. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the

public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call, (714)730-2727 for information regarding the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site, https://www.lpsasap. com/, for information regarding the sale of this property, using the file number assigned to this case, T.S.# 9985-8657. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse.
