West Nile Virus claims three more victims

Rep. Schiff currently accepting applications for service academy nominations Each year, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) nominates students from the 28th Congressional District for appointment to one of the four United States service academies which require a Congressional nomination. With these appointments, students are provided a free college education at a nationallyrecognized academic institution, while preparing for an officer’s commission in our nation’s armed forces. Nominations are required for all but the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, to which appointments are made on the basis of an annual nationwide competition. All Members of Congress are able to nominate qualified high school students for admission to one of the four service academies: the Military Acad-

Although the government shutdown has come to an end, fiscal constraints created by the Budget Control Act of 2011, combined with the uncertainty created by operations under a limited continuing reso-

In order to be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must meet the eligibility requirements established by law and be nominated by an authorized person, including Members of the House of Representatives, Members of the United States Senate or the Vice President’s Office. “The students that are nominated to a service academy compile outstanding resumes of accomplishment, demonstrating excellence in academics, physical fitness and extracurricular activities,”

financial conditions resulted in a 20% personnel reduction in Glendora PD, however, Chief Castro was able to use the financial crisis as an opportunity to innovate. He implemented Focus-Based Continuous Improvement Policing and District Policing programs which included the use of innovative technologies. His management philosophy is predicated on exceptional customer service, values-based management, and continuous performance improvement. Chief Castro is very active in regional policing efforts in the San Gabriel Valley as a means of delivering quality, cost-efficient service. Through his leadership, Glendora maintains a strong regional profile in diverse areas such as helicopter/air support, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), jailing services, and public safety radio systems. Castro has managed the Office of Traffic Safety Traffic DUI and Traffic Safety Grant for all of Los Angeles County for the past five years. His Focus-Based

Policing program resulted in injury traffic collisions declining 5% each year. He has been very successful in obtaining grant funds to implement many of the programs and technologies used to meet the contemporary challenges of public safety. His community involvement includes being a member of Kiwanis, PTA, Chamber of Commerce, and numerous community committees in the city of Glendora. “Glendale is truly an incredible community which is diverse, proud, and has wonderful involvement and support. I am honored to have the opportunity to bring my experiences and ideas to this dynamic community, organization, and management team.” said Chief Castro. “I believe by working with and listening closely to employees, community members, and city leaders we can improve the quality of life for all who live, work, and visit Glendale. I am very excited to replicate many of the successful processes I have used during my career here in

Glendale.” City Manager Scott Ochoa heralded Castro’s arrival in Glendale by saying, “Chief Rob Castro will capitalize on the significant gains made by Glendale PD over the recent years. Building on the successes and expectations established during Chief Ron De Pompa’s administration, I am very confident that Chief Castro will sustain our positive momentum. He understands and appreciates our organization’s values, he is an innovative leader, and he appreciates and respects the role of community support in maintaining Glendale as a very special – and safe – place.” Chief Castro is expected to take over as the Chief of Police on Monday December 16, 2013. Chief Castro, 48 years, and his wife, Cynthia, an elementary school teacher, have two sons, Nicholas, 16, and Robbie, 18. He and his family enjoy fitness activities, such as running and mountain bike riding.

Boy Scouts, Baca and a Beatle By Terry Miller

B

oy Scouts are in the news again….what a surprise! No, this time it’s not a sex scandal or their reluctance to accept gays in the scouts. This time it is “grown” men ( Scout troop ‘leaders’) acting like complete nincompoops and plainly getting their dimwitted rocks off by destroying a historic Hoodoo formation millions of years old. All captured on their own video… It took either 170 million or 200 million years (depending on who you talk to) for the wind and water to create the hoodoos that are the main attraction in Goblin Valley State Park in Utah. It just took about sixty seconds for these two Boy Scout troop leaders to push one over. Hoodoos are formed when layers of harder rock forms on top of softer sediment. Water, wind and freeze-thaw cycles erode the soft stuff, leaving the mushroom-like top. They have been around for a while and it is unlikely that it is teetering on the edge of collapse. The video shows a big guy doing a lot of work to push it over. It was not loose or wobbling as these pathetic excuses for ‘leaders’ said. The BSofA were not amused by these twits. Baden-Powell must be rolling in his grave. Well done guys, another shining example of teaching younger men how to behave like complete and utter hooligans. Which of course, is what you are! I’m so glad you set such a great example for kids. A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent. Apparently these men never read that Scout Law! aca is back in the news…again. This time the Feds find Baca personally liable in the jail abuse case. According to the Los Angeles Times “A federal jury found Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca personally liable in a case involving abuse of an inmate in the Men’s Central Jail, meaning the sheriff could be

B

required to pay $100,000 out of pocket. It is the first time a jury has held Baca personally at fault in a deputy use-of-force case. Sheriff’s officials called the verdict a “huge mistake” and said they would appeal.” eatle Paul McCartney has been rather industrious lately. The last chance I had to photograph Paul and the other lads from Liverpool was in 1965 at New York’s Shea Stadium. But that didn’t work out very well either. My Dad – who worked for a big Daily newspaper in the UK – was assigned to cover the concert for the paper…he had extra Press credentials and promised to take his sons ( only the biggest Beatle fans in the world) to this historic concert. He gave the press passes away in a pub the night before that celebrated concert. We never forgave him, really! Paul, when you read this… how about it, man. You let Harry Benson shoot you lots of times ( Benson is one of my Dad’s good friends and terrific photojournalist) I want photograph you in concert, anywhere in the world. Just give me a chance. You name the time and place. I’ll be there. I’ve not had much luck with trying to photograph any of the mop tops over the years. In 1969, I thought I’d get a chance to meet George Harrison at The Concert for Bangladesh in Madison Sq. Garden… But, again that didn’t work out either - my ticket was way up “ in the gods…” as they say back home. My measly 50mm Nikon lens couldn’t really quite capture the pot cloud in the Garden that night let alone the stage. If you listen closely to the album however, you will hear my hands clapping after each song - really. More recently, Ringo got his star on the walk of fame in Hollywood…I felt sure I’d get to meet the legend and sole reason I play drums being so close to Pasadena. But this wasn’t to happen either. The PR

person at Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said she couldn’t let me in the “photo pen” due to the overwhelming requests. Rubbish! She could easily let me in. However, this PR pariah was just part of the colossal conspiracy aimed at preventing me from making any Beatle image with my trusty Nikon. Actually, I think Ringo was worried I’d want to play his drums. Even when John Lennon moved to New York, I had just moved to California. Man, I was not lucky at all. Sadly, nor was Lennon.. However, years later, I was invited to meet Yoko Ono at Santa Barbara Museum of and it was astonishing, of course, and I was asked to submit photos of her to her foundation, which I was delighted to do. Sitting and drinking cocktails with Yoko Ono. Twenty years later, I managed to photograph her again, this time with Quincy Jones at the NAMM show in Anaheim. She kindly waved when she saw me again. Yoko is very gracious and not pretentious. One can see why John was in so love with her. On the other hand, Paul still maintains that Yoko should never have been in the studio with (The Beatles) them…it caused a lot of animosity which has been well publicized.

Like millions of Americans, firefighters and their families are affected by cancer every year. For the next week, CAL FIRE is joining fire and police departments across the nation to show their support for the battle against cancer by wearing special CAL FIRE shirts with pink ribbons on them. Raising awareness and money for cancer research, CAL FIRE’s 2013 “Cares Enough to Wear Pink" campaign runs October 20 - 26 and is part of October’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when wearing pink signifies support for breast cancer research. “For the past several years CAL FIRE firefighters have proudly helped raise awareness for such an important cause,” said Chief

Ken Pimlott, CAL FIRE director. “The shirts we are wearing are just a small sign of support for an important battle.” Proceeds from the Tshirt sales generated by CAL FIRE employee's voluntary participation are donated to cancer research related nonprofit organizations. CAL FIRE is one of the largest fire departments in the nation and the over 7,000 men and women of the department have an opportunity to make a significant contribution to this worthwhile effort by voluntarily joining in on the "Cares Enough to Wear Pink" campaign. CAL FIRE is proud to help raise funds to find a cure and send a strong message of hope to those suffering from this disease.

said Schiff. “It has been an honor to see exceptionally qualified students from our community excel as cadets and midshipmen and then go on to serve our country honorably in one of the branches of our armed services. Each year, I nominate students who I know will excel and contribute at these academies and in our nation’s military, and I would encourage interested students to apply for one of these prestigious nominations to the service academies.” An applicant for nomination must meet the following eligibility requirements as of July 1 of

the year of admission to a service academy: he or she must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 23rd birthday, must be a United States citizen and must be unmarried, not pregnant and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents. The deadline for students interested in applying for nomination to a service academy from Cong. Schiff’s office for the Class of 2018 is November 1, 2013. By Terry Miller Word quickly spread faster than a school of catfish swimming down-stream in the Lacombe Bayou in the Louisiana towns of Springhill and Mansfield - that a food stamp glitch was giving recipients an early Christmas present of unlimited balances on their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, causing two local Wal-Marts to be completely ransacked last Saturday night according to numerous reports. Beacon first heard about the story from a Tennessee native businessman Heath Strasser who works in the financial field here in Pasadena. “I couldn’t believe it,” Strasser said with a giant gasp in his breath… “these guys were just loading up

their carts with big-screen TV’s, electronics such as cell phones…anything they could get their hands on and they knew they were stealing but didn’t care.” “I can’t believe no one is talking about it,” Stasser declared unequivocally. When a few alert WalMart employees noticed that EBT cards weren’t showing any limits, they called the corporate office and were advised to allow shoppers to use the cards regardless. “We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards during the outage so that they could get food for their families,” Wal-Mart representatives told local media. However, food was the

last very thing in most peoples’ carts Saturday according to eyewitnesses. “They were grabbing everything off the shelves… they were looting… it was that crazy” said one eyewitness who refused to be identified. Local police officers were called in for crowd control, however no one was arrested according to reports. “It was definitely worse than Black Friday. It was worse than anything we had ever seen in this town.” There was no food left on any of the shelves, and no meat left. The grocery part of Wal-Mart was totally decimated said Springhill Police Chief Will Lyn.

A new California Appellate case just published August 8, 2013, “Glaski v. Bank of America”, holds that a homeowner can challenge his lender’s right to foreclose by showing that the Deed of Trust never made it into the securitized trust until after the trust’s closing date. This is the case in most loans made in the last 12 years. If the bank foreclosed we should be able to get the homeowner money damages and/or the house back. Or a lawsuit could be filed and a court ruling obtained preventing the court from foreclosing. Recently enacted Sections 2924(a)(6) and 2924.19 of California Civil Code provide the same relief to homeowners. It is highly suggested that homeowners take this window of opportunity to get relief before the banks get Congress to close this door with national legislation. Contact us so we can help you.

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. THE PETITION requests the decedent's will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representa-tive will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authori-ty will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on Nov. 13, 2013 at 8:30AM in Dept. No. 11 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representa-tive, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the Califor-nia Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowl-edgeable in California law. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available

to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale.
